When the Subaru XV crossover arrives onto our shores sometime next year, it will come with a different name. During a presentation at the LA Auto Show this week, Subaru of America's Executive Vice President, Thomas J. Doll confirmed the Impreza-based crossover will be named the Subaru XV Crosstrek, not the Impreza Outback Sport. Why the name change? Well there could be two reasons. The first is the Impreza is known as the inexpensive compact car in Subaru's lineup. By separating all the different variants of the Impreza (XV Crosstrek, WRX, and STi), they can charge more for them. Secondly, Subaru has seen good sales results from separating the Legacy and Outback …

When Subaru launched their new modular global platform in the Impreza, they said the platform was designed to accept different powertrains such as hybrid and electric. According to a report from Autocar, Subaru's first electric model is just around the corner. Subaru's chief designer, Mamoru Ishii told the outlet that the electric vehicle would be a variant of one of their current models and will launch in 2020. “Subaru cars are designed to support people’s lifestyles, so it should not be a case of designing the car for the powertrain. If customers want change we’ll respond - our cars are about customers loving using them how they are designed - but we are not g…

Subaru's booth at the Tokyo Motor Show has two concepts that will give us an idea of what the brand has in store for the future. First up is the Impreza 5-Door concept. Subaru is keeping quiet for the most part on this concept by only releasing some stylish renders and saying this will be the first model to debut a new modular platform for the company. Second is the Viziv Future Concept which gives a preview into what could be coming down the line in terms of powertrain and safety. The vehicle boasts a hybrid powertrain with turbocharged four-cylinder and an electric motor on the rear axle provides all-wheel drive. Also, the Viziv has an intelligent traffic commu…

Some recent comments made by Subaru UK's managing director, Chris Graham has some wondering if manual transmissions will become an endangered species for the company. According to Auto Express, Subaru has been putting more focus on their EyeSight driver-assist technology - comprised of stereo cameras on the windshield to provide adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and lane keep assist. Subaru doesn't offer this on any model equipped with manual transmission and there doesn't appear to be any plans to engineer EyeSight for manuals. ”I’m not sure if it’s compatible at all with a manual gearbox. There are certainly no rumours we’ve heard that manu…

Toyota is in plans to purchase additional shares of Subaru to raise its stake to over 20% from around 17% today. Subaru in kind will also invest back in Toyota via a similar stock purchase of Toyota. If the deal is approved by Toyota's board, it is a step towards making Subaru a whole owned subsidiary that would create a 'Mega Toyota'. Toyota recently announced a similar purchase of Suzuki shares to form a new alliance for the Indian market. Toyota and Subaru have worked together before on projects such as the Subaru BRZ / Toyota 86 and Subaru for a time built Toyota Camrys at its plant in Indiana. Toyota sees Subaru as being strong in sport utility vehicles a…

Subaru tried to get into the crossover game in 2006 with the B9 Tribeca, but odd styling, poor fuel economy for a crossover, and an ill-fated partnership with Saab via GM to build a 9-6x version for them doomed the Tribeca to obscurity. By 2013, Subaru was selling just 120 Tribecas per month on average, and in 2014 Subaru finally pulled the plug. Now, Subaru is announcing it is getting back into the larger crossover game with a new 3-row crossover, larger than the Tribeca, due out in 2018. The as yet unnamed vehicle will be built at Subaru's plant in Lafayette, Indiana. As for what it may look like, we can get some hints on the styling direction Subaru might take …

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com November 22, 2013 If you ever wanted to see a case of mixed messages in the automotive world, let us introduce you to the mess with Toyota and Subaru over the GT86 Convertible. Automotive News spoke with Subaru brand chief Yasuyuki Yoshinaga and asked about GT86/BRZ Convertible. Yoshinaga dismissed the notion of convertible, citing the vehicles would need a redesign of the structure for that to happen. "We make the car, so if we don't make it, it can't happen. Our engineering department told me that losing the entire roof requires a complete redesign of the structure. It would need a big change." This kind of plays into…

Subaru Reveals The BRZ Concept STI William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com November 1, 2011 You have to wonder if Subaru was getting a bit jealous with Toyota since the spotlight for the past week or so has been on FT-86. Now, Subaru is taking back the spotlight by releasing a picture of the BRZ Concept STI. The coupe seems to share a lot of design cues from the FT-86 except for the unique fender vents, hexagonal front grill, hawk eye headlights, and hard to miss rear spoiler. Under the hood lies a 2.0L naturally aspirated Boxer four, not a tubrocharged version of the same engine that has been rumored (though that could change when…

Subaru Spells Out The Name Of Their Version Of Toyota's FT-86 Coupe William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com August 23, 2011 Subaru is behind Toyota with the number of concept vehicles previewing a RWD coupe the two companies are working on together. Subaru STI Convertible = Profit? William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com February 25, 2011 If you have been torn between choosing a convertible or a Subaru Impreza STI, a Subaru dealer in New Hampshire has an answer for you. They have in their showroom a Subaru Impreza STI convertible. Yeah, a Impreza STI convertible. The vehicle besides losing its roof is much of the same with a 305 HP turbocharged four cylinder, six speed manual, and all wheel drive. The Subaru dealer says there will be five convertibles in total. Pricing for the STI convertible is a jaw dropping $89,999. The only question is this, Why? Source: Manchester Subaru Source: NA…

Next Tuesday at the LA Auto Show, Subaru will unveil their three-row Ascent crossover. Before then, Subaru has released a teaser photo of the Ascent. The photo gives us a good look at the roofline and greenhouse which scream Forester to us. There also appears to be flared fenders up front that were on the Ascent Concept that debuted earlier this year at the New York auto show. We know that the Ascent will be underpinned by Subaru's modular Global Platform that underpins the Impreza and Crosstrek. Source: Subaru View full article

By Yuzo Yamaguchi Automotive News / August 29, 2005 http://www.autonews.com/article.cms?articleId=54306 TOKYO -- Subaru plans to add a minivan to its U.S. lineup in late 2007 or in 2008. Based on the Subaru Legacy platform, the seven-seat vehicle with a 2.5-liter engine would be smaller and more affordable than the B9 Tribeca, says a source at Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., which makes Subarus. Another Fuji source confirmed the company's plans for the minivan. The B9 Tribeca sport wagon, which went on sale in May, has a base price of $31,320, including destination. 2006 Subaru Outback XT Wagon Turbo power enlivens a squareback stalwart. by Eric Peters (2006-03-24) Out here in the boonies of rural southwestVirginia, where winters can be long and harsh and snowplows few and far between, Subarus are everywhere. The locals love them because they're unbelievably tenacious, capable of scrabbling up and down snow-covered back roads as well as most 4x4 pickups and SUVs. There's also the well-deserved reputation for being tough little muthas that just go and go and go; ancient but still operable '80s-era Brats are a common sight and 200,000-plus miles on the clock is par for the course. These traditional Subie selling points are what m…

Subaru Pitches Performance Future vehicles no longer positioned as premium vehicles By DIANA T. KURYLKO | Link to Original Article @ AutoWeek Now that all-wheel drive is common, Subaru of America tries to lure new buyers by adding performance variants based on its rally cars. But it is also refining its styling, aiming for a clean and more upscale look, and has abandoned the effort to remake Subaru into a premium brand. It is all part of the effort to increase sales to 250,000 units by 2010 - a target Subaru originally had set for 2006. ****** Forester: Like other recent Subaru revamps, this SUV will get bigger and more conventional looking when it is redesigned for…

Yes, There Will Be An Impreza WRX & STI... In Due Time William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com October 1, 2011 With the next generation Subaru Impreza coming to dealers next month, questions have been raised about whether there will be next generation version of the WRX and STI. Well, the good news is there will be a WRX and STI versions. The semi bad news is no one knows when the cars will be brought out. Car & Driver says no one is saying a date because Subaru wants to give the new Impreza time to gain some foothold in the market and allow time for important internal decisions to be made. If you do have the craving for a WRX or an…
