"I'm already convinced Chevy has pulled ahead [of the Mustang]. True, the 2016 Mustang GT350R just won our Road & Track Performance Car of the Year testing, so we'll have to wait and see how the Z28 stands up when it arrives. But in terms of the overall package, there's more to consider than just performance." "Not too long ago, I had a new Mustang for another lengthy road trip. At one point, outside of Pittsburgh, a last-gen Camaro SS pulled up next to me and the driver revved his engine. I looked over and just smiled. I didn't take the bait... but as he sped off, I took solace in the fact that I was in the better overall car. Not anymore." Read more at the link…

Art St. Antoine dissects the hype behind the new Camaro to explain how it's no longer vintage thrills and same-old thinking for Chevy in the ponycar segment: "It’s hard to overstate just what a leap this 2016 Chevrolet Camaro represents. The new edition isn’t simply the latest upgrade in a long line of Camaros. It’s a shape-shifter. It feels different at its very core, as if its genes had mutated to produce an entirely new specimen, one barely recognizable as belonging to the family lineage." _ Looking Way Up: Ford posts 33% sales gain in 2009, 15% market share While automotive sales have been almost universally down in 2009 compared to 2008, Ford has a legitimate reason to crow about its December figures, which are up a third over December of '08 and an impressive 50 percent over November. Ford boasts that its market share is up to 15 percent - one full percentage point higher than in 2008 and the first time since 1995 that the Blue Oval has gained on its competitors. Ford, Lincoln and even Mercury sales were improved in December. Looking Way Up: Ford posts 33% sales gain in 2009, 15% market share

Voltgate: Manufactured Outrage Yesterday the automotive press' world exploded over a small, inconsequential, technical detail in the Chevrolet Volt's powertrain that increases energy and fuel efficiency by about 15%. This detail caused the likes of Edmunds, Jalopnik, and Popular Mechanics to go so far as to accuse GM of lying about the Volt not being a hybrid. I've already explained the technical reasons behind why those publications are wrong in yesterday's article Volt: Still a not Hybrid... no lie! What bothered me most about these accusations is how quickly they started. Follow the jump to read more: Voltgate: Manufactured Outrage

If there is anything the Volkswagen diesel emission scandal has shown us, it has shown the various regulations used around the world are tricky to enforce and that automakers will take advantage of loopholes. General Motors' powertrain chief wants to change that by unifying emission standards around the world. Dan Nicholson, GM's powertrain chief tells Automotive News that he plans to use his upcoming presidency of the International Federation of Automotive Engineering Societies (Fisita) to push for the unification of emission standards around the world. “We want all our engineering resources focused on improving air quality and reducing CO2. ....may be the future. http://www.popsci.com/scitech/...nergyThe Department of Energy just gave $100,000 to upstart company Solar Roadways, to develop 12-by-12-foot solar panels, dubbed "Solar Roads," that can be embedded into roads, pumping power into the grid. The panels may also feature LED road warnings and built-in heating elements that could prevent roads from freezing. Each Solar Road panel can develop around 7.6 kwh of power each day, and each costs around $7,000. If widely adopted, they could realistically wean the US off fossil fuels: a mile-long stretch of four-lane highway could take 500 homes off the grid. If the entire US Interstate system made use of the …

National mile-driven tax pilot program tucked into $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill By Haris Alic - The Washington Times Thursday, August 5, 2021 The White House's $1.2 trillion infrastructure package includes a pilot program for a national mile-driven tax, contradicting President Biden's previous dismissal of the policy. Tucked within the 2,702-page infrastructure bill is obscure language requiring the Department of Transportation to test the feasibility of taxing drivers for the number of miles they travel. The tax would be broad enough to target any “passenger motor vehicles,” including light…

Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) and Mazda Motor Corp (7261.T) plan to build a $1.6 billion U.S. assembly plant, the two said on Friday, as part of an alliance that will also see the Japanese automakers jointly develop electric vehicle technologies. The two will take small stakes in each other as part of the tie-up: Toyota, the world's second-largest automaker by vehicle sales last year, will take a 5 percent share of Mazda, extending its dominance in Japan's auto sector. Mazda will take a 0.25 percent share of its larger rival. The plant, something of a surprise at a time of overcapacity in the U.S. market, will be a boost to U.S. President Donald Trump, who campaign…

For 2016, the Chevy SS and Holden Commodore get a last hurrah before ending production after the 2017 MY. The refresh includes a revised front clip, allegedly functional hood vents, a retuned LS3 with tweaked power figures, the quad-tipped dual mode exhaust that was so popular on the Camaro, new wheels, and a new color you can see above. IMO, the tweaks are welcome. The new bumper integrates the lower grille design much better and the new wheels are leaps and bounds more attractive than the out-of-place chromes that sold with the car thus far. It makes the car look about 5 years newer to my eyes. http://gmauthority.com/blog/2015/09/2016-chevrolet-ss-revealed-with-…

*brochure from 1974 Cadillac with Air Restraint System. GM was the first to offer airbags* With all the negative press that has circulated about General Motors before and during its bankruptcy proceedings, customers should be aware that although financially troubled, GM is a recognized leader in car safety advances. The company pioneered the development of the now ubiquitous concrete barriers on national highways and was the first car maker to install rear turn signals as standard equipment. Some of GM's safety innovations are obvious, while others are more subtle. Established GM Reputation for Safety Standards

Italy to China in driverless vehicles PARMA, Italy — It's a modern-day version of Marco Polo's journey halfway around the world — but is anyone at the controls? A team of Italian engineers on Tuesday launched what has been billed as the longest-ever test drive of driverless vehicles: a 13,000-kilometer (8,000-mile), three-month road trip from Italy to China, not in search of silk, but to test the limits of future automotive technology. Two bright orange vehicles, equipped with laser scanners and cameras that work in concert to detect and help avoid obstacles, are to brave the traffic of Moscow, the summer heat of Siberia and the bitter cold of the Gobi desert before th…

Cummins Inc., the manufacturer of diesel engines, has reached an agreement with the United States and the State of California. The $1.675 billion settlement would be the largest penalty for Clean Air Act Violations. Hundreds of thousands of engines were found with an emission-cheating defeat device. There were 630,000 defeat devices from 2013 to 2019 RAM 2500 and 3500 trucks. The Clean Air Act requires automakers and engine manufacturers to comply with emission limits. Defeat devices can be hardware or software, which can modify emission tests. Attorney General Merrick B. Garland from The Justice Department issued the following statement: “The Justice Departmen…

...and it turns out to be pretty effective, especially at lower revs. Less surprising but also interesting: VW's claimed hp and torque numbers are with the defeat device inactive. This would go a long way to explaining why the engines always felt relavively torquey, which in turn would help boost observed FE to well above the EPA's numbers. Seems we have about 3 million EV auto batteries coming up to be retired from their 10 year run. Where will they go? What will happen to them, in the ground, laying around like old tires, where? According to Bloomberg, seems countries around the world are holding the auto companies responsible for dealing with the batteries and making sure they do not get put into landfills. According to the story, it seems all auto companies are recapturing money by selling these perfectly good batteries for use as storage system from home to commercial applications around the world. Only then after they truly wear out in 20-30 years will the rare earth elements be recaptured to be …

The Economist HAVING soared on the promise of carbon-free motoring, the idea of the “hydrogen economy” crashed and burned when it collided with reality. Hundreds of experimental hydrogen-powered cars—once hailed as the best solution for reducing America’s dependence on foreign oil for over half its consumption—are now gathering dust in manufacturers’ parking lots. Hydrogen’s main attraction is that when it is “burned” in a fuel-cell or an internal-combustion engine, the only emissions are heat and a wisp of water vapour. Using hydrogen as a fuel—actually, it is mo…

"We have significantly more work to do, but today's results provide evidence of the solid foundation we're building for the new GM," CEO Fritz Henderson said in a statement. The "managerial net loss" was for the period of July 10, the day GM exited 39 days of court protection, through Sept. 30. For the full quarter a year earlier, GM had an operating loss of $4.2 billion and a net loss of $2.5 billion. Discussion -…

Factorial loves to quote Thomas Edison who in 1883 said the following: "The storage battery is, in my opinion, a catchpenny, a sensation, a mechanism for swindling the public by stock companies." Factorial states that this sentiment is true and has been held over the last 138 years till now. Investing in solid-state battery R&D over the last 6 years has allowed Factorial to create their proprietary FEST (Factorial Electrolyte System Technology). Factorial held their grand opening ceremony at their state-of-the-art solid-state battery production facility in Methuen, Mass. Siyu Huang, CEO of Factorial stated the following: “We are thr…

Reporting through December 20th, 2023, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has data about manufacturer recalls for the year. Ford has issued 54 recalls affecting 5,692,135 vehicles. Not only is this the highest of any automaker, but it marks the third year in a row that Ford is at the top spot for recalls. Ford had almost twice as many Kia vehicles at 3 million. This was related to leaking brake fluid which is a fire risk. Stellantis came second with 45 recalls and 2.7 million affected cars. Third to fifth place goes to BMW with 29 recalls, Mercedes-Benz with 27 recalls, and Nissan with 22 recalls. Ford had the highest number of recalls bu…

Just how slippery is the Lightyear 0 EV? Try a confirmed 0.175 coefficient of drag (Cd) for this solar assisted electric car with testing having been done by FKFS wind tunnels in Stuttgart, Germany, under WLTP protocols. I know, I know, how much more aerodynamic is this than others and here is the top 3 cars till today. Lucid Air, Tesla Model S and Mercedes-Benz EQS have all come in at 0.20 to 0.21 meaning the Lightyear 0 is slippery. Even GMs EV1 which only had 1,117 leased to customers in California had a Cd of 0.195. Initial first year run is 946 EVs with a reserve cost of $250,000 euros. What does one get for the Euro $250,000 dollars? …

Flogging these pickup trucks off-road wasn't our only consideration when picking the 2017 Monster Factory Off-Road Challenge winner. Each truck racked up points through rigorous evaluations in a number of subjective categories that included judges' scores in interior quality, versatility, value and more. Points also were awarded for measured testing of acceleration and braking and various truck-centric capabilities, including payload and gross vehicle weight ratings. The winner was perhaps a bit lopsided in off-road chops and leaned so far in that direction that its shortcomings in other areas weren't serious enough to keep it off the top of the podium. Here's how th…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com February 17, 2012 Distracted Driving is a topic that’s on everybody's minds, and with good reason. Newer vehicles are packed with more technology; ranging from touchscreen infotainment systems options to voice-controlled applications to smartphone integration. It comes as no surprise that the U.S. DOT Secretary Ray LaHood, the man who is leading the Distracted Driving cause has announced a new set of proposed guidelines for automakers to limit the use of in-car tech solutions that are "not directly relevant to safely operating the vehicle, or cause undue distraction by engaging the driver's eyes or hands for more than…

"When we heard Cadillac Alpha-platform chief Tony Roma talking about some of his team moonlighting behind the wheels of their own race cars, we thought it might be fun to meet a few of them. Wary of the flack-favorite 'our-guys-are-car-guys-because-they-own-cars' stunt... we asked Cadillac if we might be able to set up a track day. When that Friday afternoon came, enough racers had RSVP’d that we could have filled a grid. "The 15 [that showed up]—more wanted to attend but were needed elsewhere—have all helped make the latest generation of the Cadillac CTS the best yet, the sports sedan that has finally put GM on par with its German rivals. Each of them races, and it’s t…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com May 17, 2012 Fisker has a lot of problems: money, delays, and an investigation into a Karma fire are just some of them. And it doesn't look like the problems are going to end soon. Inside EVs got their hands on some leaked documents that were dated "a few weeks ago" dealing with the new Atlantic sedan. First the bad news. Originally, Fisker said that production would begin in late 2012 before hitting the market in early 2013. The leaked document states “negotiations with the DoE have become more complicated and are expected to take longer than originally expected”, delaying the Atlantic’s 2013 launch by several months…

GM - Saturn - Penske deal is DEAD! Today we learned that Penske Automotive Group (PAG) has decided to terminate discussions with General Motors to acquire Saturn. This is very disappointing news and comes after months of hard work by hundreds of dedicated employees and Saturn retailers who tried to make the new Saturn a reality. PAG's announcement explained that their decision was not based on interactions with GM or Saturn retailers; rather it was because of the inability to source new products beyond what it had asked GM to build on contract. As a result of PAG's decision, we will be winding down the Saturn brand and dealership network, in accordance with the wind-d…

UPDATE: Cash for Clunkers ends Monday One month and 500k sales later, program dries up If you're planning on cashing in on your clunker, you'd better get to a dealer soon. Exactly one month after it began, the government's CARS program will end Monday at 8 PM. U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood blames conservative sales estimates for the pushed-up deadline, which was initially to come on Labor Day. Since July 24th, close to a half million sales worth billions in rebates have been recorded. Funding issues, dealers angry over rebate checks and controversy over the trashing of old "clunkers" have regularly made headlines since Cash for Clunkers began. N…

Feb 2017 Automotive Safety Recalls These start as of last month and go backwards, 198 current active recalls. Suprising is that Mazda has multiple recalls on every single product they make and some even on products no longer made. Crazy. Also latest Mercedes-benze sure seems to have a bunch of recalls too. Seems that Ford and GM has a bunch of airbag recalls now, same issue that has hit Honda and the rest of the asian OEMS. How is this still not resolved and still an issue even on 2016/2017 models? Auto NXT published the current list, nice job. http://autonxt.net/latest-automotive-safety-recalls/

C4C filing time extended, again Dealers unable to process requests; Tuesday set as new deadline Bimmer325 | Tuesday @ 01:56 AM One more lap to go. Thousands of dealers complained of trouble filing clunker requests Monday, with the finish line looming just hours away. As a result, the Obama administration has extended the deadline for dealers to process transactions to noon Tuesday. It's too late for any deals, though, as sales under the incentive winded down Monday at 8 PM. Why the paperwork trouble? Increased traffic as last-minute shoppers rushed to cash in caused the government website to crash Monday afternoon. As dealers rushed to submit vouchers on t…

Ford Motor Co. says it is dropping its plan to build a $1.6-billion US plant in Mexico, a plan criticized by Donald Trump during last year's presidential primary campaign. Ford also announced it plans to invest about $700 million in a Michigan factory that will build high-tech autonomous and electric vehicles. The company said it will add 700 direct new jobs at its Flat Rock (Michigan) Assembly Plant, which will build a small sport utility vehicle with extended battery range, a fully autonomous vehicle for ride-hailing or ride-sharing, and the Ford Mustang and Lincoln Continental.\ Link

" The world of carbon emissions uses some unusual units of measure. Take, for example, 8.2 million megagrams. Who needs to know how much that is? Someone at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, that's who. FCA had to buy that many greenhouse-gas emissions credits from greener automakers, Reuters says, citing a report from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Because its vehicles' collective fuel economy continues to trail the industry average, FCA purchased the emissions credits at of the end of 2014 in order to meet US emissions regulations. About two-thirds of those credits were acquired from Toyota, while the rest were purchased from Tesla and Honda. Daimler and Ferrar…
