C&D Places ATS-V Last in Comparo... for interior??

Car & Driver has posted the first ATS-V comparison up against the M3 and AMG C63.

 

Frankly, if you look at the performance, this car has 100% delivered. If you look at the price, this car has 100% delivered. Somehow in the final tally after scoring an incredible 58 out of 60 points in the chassis chart, and topping fun to drive, and taking top honors for 1/4 mile acceleration and lateral grip--all the tests one would expect to be the most important in this class of car--you'll find the ATS relegated to last place after losing 10+ points for the interior and backseat.

 

As tested, it was ten grand cheaper than the BMW and almost twenty less than the Mercedes.

 

Final scoring:

 

1st: BMW M3 - 207 pts

2nd: AMG C63 S - 205 pts

3rd: ATS-V - 201 pts

I've been in multiple ATS's since they came out, I've NEVER been underwhelmed by anything other than the gauge cluster. This past year, I also sat in an S4, an A5, and a handful of Acuras including a $60k RLX. None of them made the ATS-V interior seem like a deal breaker by comparison. Could the V-series interior be more special? Yes. Does it look like a Chevrolet next to other luxury cars? Hell no.

 

Hopefully GM swaps out the gauge cluster and CUE console for 2017 so journalists can stop with the eye-rolling hyperbole and concentrate on how well it performs.

The ATS-V beat the M3 in chassis by 7 points.  Powertrain let them down a bit, and the interior and vehicle really killed them, even with getting points for being lowest priced.  The sad thing is they got the hard part right in the chassis, but couldn't execute on the interior of the car.

 

Interestingly enough MotorTrend likes the Jaguar XE more than the 335i, and said it was better in every way.  So I'd imagine the V8 XE is going to be pretty good too.

It may be, but no one buys Jags so the point is moot; no one cares except magazines.

The auto rags are invested in an editorial slant; they know for the most part where their readers' preferences lie and - especially in a time where print is slowly sinking - they need to cater to that expectation or set themselves up for reader satisfaction risk.

 

Didn't read the article, but if they for a half sentence dinged the ATS because of the supposed rear seat room issue, they risked & lost the critical thinker right there- these are the highest performance compact luxury cars; rear seat room is about as important as the knurling on the valve stem cap.

 

The incredible take-away is that the ATS-V is SO GOOD on the road they could NOT deny it the #1 ranking against the holy grail of such, the M3. This is a red letter day for Cadillac comparison testing. Let's look at that again; the ATS-V is a better performer than the holy BMW M3. BAM.

ATS-V gripes were "acres of glossy black plastic, looks cheap and worse, highlights fingerprints, dust and dandruff."  "gauges reek of Chevy thrift.  Don't even get us started on CUE."  And of course "ATS-V also suffers from the most squeezed back seat of the bunch"  They said the engineers did their work, the designers let them down.

 

If you just go on performance, all three were within 0.1 seconds of each other in 0-60 and 1/4 mile acceleration.   C63 had the best braking, ATS-V had best skidpad, M3 had the best slalom.  M3 had the best observed fuel economy, C63 was most quiet.  The performance data was extremely close on all 3 cars, so that puts the decision on the details.  The C63 lost 2 points on price, 1 point for no incentives, it would have won if it was 3-series money.  Which is a complaint I have about the C63, there shouldn't even be a C63 and C63 S, the standard C63 should be the 503 hp engine.  I think whatever they do on the AMG "S" models should just be standard, they already charge a lot.

Its according who U ask. The ATS's only interior issue stems from its gauge cluster.. and only during the day. It looks like something that should have been in a Camaro.. ironically the new Camaro cluster looks like it should have been in a Cadillac ATS. Outside of that.. IMO,the ATS beats the 3Series in luxurious feel internally.

 

The XE.. from what I saw was boring as $h!, inside and out. I kno what Lieberman said at MT.. but anyone calling the ATS design as bland and then this Jag special is Special themselves.. in a Short Bus kinda way.

U are one of those people who probably read the ATS performance triumph and went straight in looking for demerits on the interior. That's lame. The Piano Black is slick.. Fingerprints?? Really??? And we are back on this back-seat thing. THEY ALL SUCK IN THE BACKSEAT.. because they are ALL compacts.

"ATS-V steers better than the M3, has better brake feel than the M3, digests a road with more verve than the M3…" ~ Munich is not only sitting up, they are likely tearing out their hair.

 

ATS-V has 0.1 sec on the MB in the 1/4, but a huge 6 MPH- that's pulling a bunch harder than the C63.

MB is still putting a governor on their cars, but at least they upped it from the long-standing 155 MPH.

Heavy weight in the C63 is showing in the slalom time- car needs a diet. They also charge you $8000 for 34 HP - LOL.

I actually think there's a typo somewhere in the 1/4 mile specs because the ATS-V is ahead .4 seconds to 100 mph, and a massive 3.5 seconds ahead to 150 mph. The engine is showing significant power over the two competitors once you reach triple digits.

 

It's not necessarily what they say about the interior, it's how they go into the final scoring and somehow a bland gauge cluster and cramped back seat steal the win in a top tier performance comparo. That's RIDICULOUS. They say right in the pages that the ATS-V is the best driver's car, but they fudge the subjective scores to keep the ATS-V on the bottom.

 

I mean if there was a single demerit in their notebook, they found a way to subtract for it twice.

 

Seriously, look at the points:

-The ATS-V loses 4 points for the back seat ALONE for two separate catagories.

-1 to 2 more points lost for "features/amenities", not sure how that's even calculated.

-Fit and finish loses 2 pts to the BMW and 3 pts to the AMG, really? Glossy plastic means that much? Apparently, because...

-ANOTHER 4 points are lost to the AMG and 3 pts to the Bimmer for interior design.

 

We're talking 10 total points lost to the M3 and 13 lost to the AMG just on the interior nitpicks.

Terrible allocation of points in regards to interior sub-categories. However, I think they do price scores as a ratio of how much worse as a percentage is the higher and highest MSRP competitor.

 

However; I'm not much of a fan of the ATS interior. I much prefer the CTS and Escalade. Those interiors are done exceptionally well; much in part due to the better gauges. But again; enthusiasts can look past the nuances of gauges - as long as they are clear, legible and accurate.

There is an innate need for American magazines to show bias in the direction of the foreign competitor especially when the competitor is BMW, Benz, or... Honda. Car and Driver even once created a bullcrap category called Gotta Have just to normally give the more "exotic " vehicle an edge. I expect negativity when the first CTSv tests arrive.

The interior is a pretty big part of the car, I mean that is where the driver and occupants sit. A normal driver on a normal road will never get close to finding the difference between 1.02 g and .97 g. So I think the interior execution and design does matter a lot.

I don't like piano black on any car, it looks like shiny plastic that should be in a Scion, even if it is expensive, they should find something else. Use carbon fiber or wood.

The $8,000 up charge for 34 horsepower on the C63 is nuts. They already have margins built in there, just make the base C63 503 HP to make it stand out, and forget these S models on all trims. I am fine with a more hardcore black series that is more track geared.

These aren't coupes, correct?

 

So 8cubic feet less in the rear and 2cubic feet less in the trunk (than the smallest competitor) is a fair amount and reason to gripe. If these were coupes, clearly they would be even more driver oriented but if the buyer is buying one of these in sedan guise then they intend to use the rear seats and trunk and the lack of space for a vehicle within an inch or two in all exterior measurments of the BMW and Merc isn't acceptable and it should be knocked for those qualities, or lack of qualities, in my opinion.

 

I absolutely love this class of car. It is right up my ally and hopefully one day I will be deciding on one of these three. The one thing that I think would sway me from the ATS-V is the V8 in the Merc. The ATS looks freakin' awesome in its V Series costume but if there is a 500+hp V8 as a competitor..It'd be hard to pass up one of the few V8s left around..

If C/D wants to score the comparo that way for those reasons then by all means let them. If the beefs are legit they will be addressed.

No no no 464 is plenty. It was the v8 part that I'm more partial to.. Strictly for its noises. All of these cars perform so close to each other it's awesome for us car guys.

They will. Again.. the ATS is a product of the OLD GM. The actual car was designed in 2006 and was set for release in '09 before $h! hit fan.

 

I actually am starting to think that due to the impending changeover of names.. and the fact that the model is ready for a full makeover, in what will be now, the next model year, 2017.. GM is not investing to much more money in the the ATS because the CT2(?) is already in the design booth. I think what they are gonna show up with is a car that is literally all the great points of the current ATS in its award winning chassis and dynamics.. but a slight bump up in size, probably the same size of the ATS-L over in China or a a split right down the middle to give it the same extra 1.3 inch bump of the 3series in WB to shut up the sudden jump in buyers who chauffeur their friends in this segment :rolleyes:

No that's not what I'm saying. I'm sayin that the dimensions, or rather a partial uptick of those dimensions, will likely make there way here. In other words the ATS-L is 3.3 inches longer than the ATS. I could see the next ATS getting a 1.7 inch bump in size kinda the way the new Malibu is larger than the last to shut people up about the interior space... unless GM keeps the same packaging and figured a way to still get more interior room out as the 3series has.

They'll keep a hold on the size, I think. The way I see it the only segment where they'll be sized between segments is at the upper range where Cadillac seems to have favoured a 2-car approach: CT6 versus SWB flagships and CT7 or CT8 against the LWB variants (and the S-Class specifically).

No they shouldn't. What they should do is simply leave the size alone.. but scallop the insides in a way to accommodate more room in the rear so that people who seem to be buying in this segment suddenly will have room for their sudden new found chauffeuring duties.  :glare:

 

In the area of sales.. the ATS will be vastly helped when Cadillac gets on the ball and starts offering more variations of the car. Of course THAT.. has to apply to the entire line-up.. a convertible, a diesel, all the niches they can get into simply to cover all the bases possible. Having the Camaro convertible proves that the Alpha platform is capable of convertible.. despite the fact that U.. U SMK.. said that Alpha was not able to accommodate a convertible a few months back.

      It has been about five years since a Cadillac V series model has graced either one the Cheers & Gears’ garages (if you’re wondering, that would be the 2011 CTS-V Coupe that our Managing Editor drove). It isn’t for our lack of trying. I can give you a stack of emails to the person who handles General Motors’ fleet in Detroit that list the ATS-V and CTS-V as a possible test vehicle. But if you keep bugging someone over time, something is bound to change. That is what happened this summer as a Cadillac ATS-V coupe rolled into the Cheers and Gears’ Detroit garage. Was it worth the wait? 
      The standard Cadillac ATS coupe is already a model that stands out in crowd thanks to an aggressive look. The V turns that aggressiveness up to eleven. The front features a dual mesh grille setup (a small one on top and a larger one below), a narrow slot between the grille and hood; and a new bulging hood with an air extractor. A set of optional eighteen-inch alloy wheels fill in the wheel wells nicely and show off the massive Brembo brakes. The back comes with a rear wing and diffuser with quad exhaust tips.
      Our ATS-V tester featured the optional Carbon Fiber package that adds an exposed carbon fiber weave for the front splitter, hood extractor, and rear diffuser. It also comes with a larger rear wing and extensions for the rocker panels. I’ll admit I found the carbon fiber package to be a bit much with our tester’s red paint at first. It’s like going into an important meeting wearing a zoot suit and alligator shoes. You’ll make an impression, but is it the one you want to put out into the world? I did grow to like this combination as the week went on. That said, I would skip the carbon fiber package. For one, you have to very careful not cause any damage to lower parts when driving over speed bumps and other road imperfections. For example, the low ride height makes it easy for the front splitter to be cracked. Second, this optional package is $5,000. There are better ways you can use that $5,000 such as getting a new set of tires or a plane ticket to get you over to Cadillac’s V driving school.
      Inside, the ATS-V is a bit of a disappointment. For the nearly $80,000 price tag of our tester, you would think that it would look and feel the part. In certain areas, the ATS-V does. Cadillac has appointed parts of the interior with carbon fiber and suede to give it a sporty feel. Our tester featured the optional Recaro seats which are the first set I actually liked sitting in. A lot of this is due to how you could adjust seat bolstering to make yourself actually fit into the seat, not sitting on top of it. 
      But this where the good points end with the ATS-V’s interior. Despite all of the premium touches Cadillac has added, it doesn’t feel like it is worth the price. Take for example the center stack with CUE. It is just a sheet of piano black trim and makes the interior feel somewhat cheap. You’ll find more piano black trim throughout the interior which reinforces this. The instrument cluster is the same that you’ll find in the standard ATS only with a different font. It would have been nice if Cadillac could have pulled the 12.3-inch screen setup they use on the CTS-V as it looks nicer and would provide the key details needed for a driver. CUE still hasn’t gotten any better in terms of performance and overall usability. Yes, Cadillac has added Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration to CUE. But we had issues with CarPlay with the system not recognizing our phone and apps crashing. The back seat? Just use it for storage. Trying to fit someone back there could cause you to be accused of cruel and unusual punishment.
      Power for the ATS-V comes from a twin-turbo 3.6L V6 with 464 horsepower and 445 pound-feet of torque. This can be paired with either a six-speed manual or our tester’s eight-speed automatic. Start up the engine and it delivers a meaty, if somewhat muted growl. Don’t let that fool you, this engine will throw you in the back of your seat with no issue. Yes, the turbos do mean you’ll have a moment or two for that rush of power to arrive. But once the turbos spool, hold on. Power comes on at a linear rate and never lets up. The eight-speed automatic delivers crisp upshifts, but it does take a second or so for it to downshift. If you’re wondering about fuel economy, the EPA rates the ATS-V automatic at 16 City/24 Highway/19 Combined. Our average for the week landed around 18 mpg.
      Where the ATS-V truly shines is in the handling. The first time I took the ATS-V down a curvy road, I was gobsmacked at how well it hustled around the corners with no issues. Enter into a corner and ATS-V hunkers down thanks to sticky Michelin Pilot Sport. There is little body roll and the steering provides quick and precise turn-in. The ATS was already a pretty decent handling car, but Cadillac knew that it could be better. The stiffness of the chassis has been increased by 25 percent and there is the newest version of GM’s Magnetic Ride Control system that is faster when it comes adjusting the damping characteristics of the shocks. Three modes (Touring, Sport, and Track) can vary the stiffness of the shocks along with the behavior of the engine and steering. 
      When you decided that you had enough fun and it is time to go back to the daily grind, the ATS-V turns into a comfortable cruiser. With the vehicle in Touring mode, the ride is compliant with some bumps making their way inside. Road and wind noise is kept to very acceptable levels.
      One item that we were disappointed not to have on our test ATS-V was blind spot monitoring. This is part of a $1,500 Safety and Security package that also adds lane keep assist, forward collision alert, rear-cross traffic alert, and more. For a vehicle that begins that begins just a hair over $62,000, you think blind spot monitor would be standard. It should.
      Cadillac has been making great strides since the first-generation CTS-V and the ATS-V is the beneficiary of it. The powertrains will nail you to your seats and the handling can match or surpass the class leaders. But Cadillac is still stumbling over some simple things such as the interior materials and the infotainment system. It is an amazing driving vehicle, but it is let down by the interior.
      At the end of the week, I couldn’t deny this is an impressive vehicle even with the interior issues. It was very much worth the long wait.

      More and more automakers are beginning to roll out high-performance driving schools to those who purchase one of their performance vehicles. Cadillac is the latest one.
      Starting with the 2017 Cadillac ATS-V and CTS-V, buyers will be eligible for a two-day course at Cadillac's V-Performance Academy. The Academy is based at Spring Mountain Motor Resort and Country Club near Las Vegas, Nevada. The course "is designed for drivers of all experience levels and includes dynamic car control exercises, visual skill development, and proper cornering techniques." There will also be time in the classroom to explain various things.
      We'll admit Cadillac's V-Performance Academy is quite the steal as the brand will cover a two-night stay in one of the Spring Mountain on-site condos, along with breakfast and lunch. All you need to do is buy the plane ticket to get to Las Vegas.

      Two-day driver training included with every 2017 V-Series Cadillac today announced the Cadillac V-Performance Academy driving experience at Spring Mountain Motor Resort and Country Club near Las Vegas, Nevada. The two-day driver training program will be included in the purchase of any of Cadillac’s high-performance V-Series models: 2017 Cadillac ATS-V Sedan, 2017 ATS-V Coupe and 2017 Cadillac CTS-V sedan.
      Cadillac is the only luxury automotive brand offering a two-day driver training with the purchase of a high-performance vehicle. Customers will register online for the experience after taking delivery of a 2017 V-Series model. The V-Performance Academy program may also be purchased as a stand-alone experience.

For 2017, Cadillac will be offering Carbon Black appearance packages for the ATS, ATS-V, CTS, and CTS-V.       Cadillac Introduces Carbon Black Sport Package
      Design Highlights Thoroughbred Performance

      Cadillac today introduced the Carbon Black sport package for the 2017 model year editions of the Cadillac ATS and CTS product lines, including the ATS-V and CTS-V super sedan.
       
      The Carbon Black sport package — which includes the first-ever Black Chrome grille for V-Series models and RECARO® front seats for Cadillac ATS Sedan and Coupe models — further enhances the engaging performance and striking design of Cadillac’s driver’s cars.
       
      Cadillac’s ATS and CTS product lines received additional key refinements for 2017, including new, more streamlined trim levels. Production for the 2017 model year begins later this summer, and dealers can now accept orders. Carbon Black sport package content for each model is listed below.

      Are you interested in getting your hands on a Cadillac ATS-V sedan or coupe? We'll you be happy to learn that Cadillac has open the order books at dealers. The hot Cadillac comes with a twin-turbo 3.6L V6 with 455 horsepower and 445 pound-feet of torque. 0-60 MPH takes 3.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 189 MPH. A six-speed manual is standard, while an eight-speed automatic is an option.
      Pricing for the 2016 ATS-V starts at $61,640 for the sedan and $63,660 for the coupe. Both prices include a destination charge - though we don't know how much. This puts it right in line with BMW M3 and M4 pricing with $62,950 (M3) and $65,150 (M4).
      ATS-Vs begin arriving at dealers later this summer.

      Cadillac Opens Ordering for 2016 ATS-V
      Dual-purpose performance luxury compact designed for the track, touring

      DETROIT – Cadillac dealers have begun accepting orders for the 2016 ATS-V – the brand’s inaugural luxury compact performance car starting production this spring.
      Available in sedan and coupe forms, the twin-turbocharged ATS-V offers a dual-purpose luxury performance experience: a car with true track capability straight from the factory with sophisticated road manners.
      Powered by the segment’s highest-output six-cylinder engine – the Cadillac Twin Turbo rated at 455 horsepower (339 kW) and 445 lb-ft of torque (603 Nm) – the ATS-V achieves 0-60 performance in 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 189 mph. The Cadillac Twin Turbo engine is backed by a six-speed manual – with Active Rev Match, no-lift shifting and launch control – or a paddle-shift eight-speed automatic transmission featuring launch control and Performance Algorithm Shift.
      “The V-Series is the ultimate expression of Cadillac’s re-ignited product substance and the passion at the core of our brand,” said Johan de Nysschen, Cadillac president.
      “The ATS-V expands the V-Series lineup, bringing a new kind of performance character to Cadillac. Lightweight, agile and potent, the ATS-V will make an ideal pairing with the larger and even more powerful all-new 2016 CTS-V midsize sedan, which arrives later this summer,” he said.
      In the U.S., the 2016 ATS-V sedan carries a starting price of $61,460 and the ATS-V coupe is priced from $63,660. Consumers can order ATS-Vs now through dealers and begin specifying their own ATS-V online at www.cadillac.com in April.

      Cadillac's V-Series was a three model affair at the start with the CTS-V, STS-V, and XLR-V. Then it became one model affair with the next-generation CTS-V. But the CTS-V was available in a sedan, coupe, and wagon. As the third chapter begins for the Cadillac V lineup, it kicks off with the smallest model in the lineup. Introducing the 2016 Cadillac ATS-V.
      Offered in either a sedan or coupe, the Cadillac ATS-V is a mean looker. The front end gets larger grille openings feed cool air to engine, a mesh grille insert, and a carbon fiber hood with a heat extractor to keep the engine cool. Wider fenders are needed for the 18-inch wheels that wrapped in Michelln Pilot Sport that measure out to 9 inches wide in front and 9.5 inches in back. The rear end features a lip spoiler and quad exhausts.
      Needing a bit more agression? Cadillac will offer a 'Carbon Fiber' and 'Track' packages. The Carbon Fiber package gets a more aggressive front splitter, hood vent trim, rear diffuser, composite rocker extensions, and a taller, body-color rear spoiler. The track package takes elements of carbon fiber package and adds the Performance Data Recorder and a low-mass battery.
      The ATS-V's interior comes with seats with suede inserts, a unique version of the instrument cluster for the V, and Cadillac CUE infotainment system. Optional will be sixteen-way Recaro bucket seats.
      As was leaked last week, power will come from the Twin-Turbo 3.6L producing 455 horsepower and 445 pound-feet of torque. Transmissions include a six-speed manual with rev matching or an eight-speed automatic. Both transmissions come with launch control. Cadillac says the ATS-V hits 60 MPH in 3.9 second and can hit a top speed of 185 MPH.
      Suspension-wise, the ATS-V uses the latest version of Magnetic Ride Control that are reportedly 40 percent faster than the last generation version. The chassis has been stiffen an additional 25 percent. Bringing it to a stop will be a set of Brembo brakes with six-pistons up front and four pistons in the rear. The Performance Traction Management system will keep everything in order with a choice of five different settings for a driver to choose from.
      No word on pricing, but the ATS-V sedan and coupe will be arriving at dealers next spring.

      Available in sedan and coupe forms, the first-ever ATS-V will introduce class-leading twin-turbocharged power and a comprehensive suite of design and performance systems when production begins in spring 2015.
      Since its inception in 2004, Cadillac’s V-Series has driven remarkable power and performance capability into the brand’s growing luxury car range. Building on the strengths of the award-winning ATS product line, the V-Series adds impressive track capability to what was already the lightest and most agile-driving car in the luxury compact class. The result is a dual-purpose luxury performer – a car with true track capability right from the factory that is also a sophisticated luxury car on the road.
      “Cadillac’s V-Series is the best example of Cadillac’s emerging product substance – and the purest expression of the passion at the core of the brand,” said Johan de Nysschen, Cadillac President.
      The ATS-V arrives next spring, powered by the first-ever twin-turbocharged engine in a V-Series.       First twin-turbocharged V-Series
      With a more powerful iteration of Cadillac’s Twin Turbo 3.6L V-6, the ATS-V represents the first twin-turbo powertrain in the history of the V-Series lineup. Exclusive features for the ATS-V version of the Twin Turbo are designed to make power faster and sustain it longer. Highlights include:
      Turbochargers with low-inertia titanium-aluminide turbines and vacuum-actuated wastegates for more responsive torque production
      Compressors matched for peak efficiency at peak power levels, for optimal track performance
      Patent-pending low-volume charge-cooling system that optimizes packaging efficiency and maximizes boost pressure
      Lightweight titanium connecting rods that reduce inertia of the rotating assembly, complementing the quick-spooling turbochargers.

      The Cadillac Twin Turbo also features a high-performance lubrication system designed to maintain optimal oil pressure and ventilation during high-lateral driving maneuvers typically encountered on a track.
      Stronger foundation and track-honed driving experience
      The underlying ATS structure is highly mass optimized and designed to meet higher performance requirements, with enhancements to the V-Series developed to respond to cornering and torque loads that go significantly beyond the levels experienced by the non-V models.
      The new elements include:
      Unique shock tower-to-plenum brace
      Strengthened rocker bulkhead
      Stronger rear cradle-to-rocker braces
      A unique aluminum shear panel at the front of the chassis
      V-braces for the engine compartment.

      The result is 25-percent greater structural stiffness than non-V models, which contributes to more precise handling and more direct steering responsiveness.
      “The ATS-V feels like it was machined from billet steel,” said Tony Roma, chief engineer. “Along with supporting the higher performance capability of the car, the enhanced structure conveys confidence to the driver through a greater feeling of solidity and sharper, more precise responsiveness.”
      With the stronger body structure – and more than a decade of V-Series production models and the CTS-V racing program experience under their belts – engineers tuned the ATS-V to deliver greater body motion control for a more agile feel, while maintaining excellent ride quality.
      “The result is class-leading capability on the highway or track, balanced with luxury and refinement,” said Roma. “In fact, the car is ready for the track right off the showroom floor, with no special modifications required.”
      A key component of the car’s dual-purpose performance are Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires developed specifically for the ATS-V. They feature a tri-compound tread that delivers excellent grip in performance driving situations, but delivers excellent ride quality characteristics and extended tread wear.
      Also, the V-Series models share the same 109.3-inch (2,775 mm) wheelbase as other ATS coupe and sedan models, but feature wider front and rear footprints that enhance grip, reduce body motion in turns and contribute to more direct-feeling steering.
      Additional contributors to the ATS-V’s dual-mode driving experience include:
      A revised multi-link double-pivot MacPherson-strut front suspension delivers a quicker response and increased lateral control, incorporating new ride and handling links, where traditional elastomeric bushings are replaced with zero-compliance cross-axis ball joints, higher-rate springs and a stiffer stabilizer bar – for 50 percent greater roll stiffness
      The ZF Steering Systems Servotronic II variable-ratio electric power steering gear, with increased system stiffness offering an improved feeling of precision and greater driver feedback
      Cadillac’s five-link rear suspension features reduced roll center migration, stronger lateral control and effective anti-squat geometry, complementing the front suspension with greater body motion control. Contributing components include stiffer bushings, new cradle mounts, higher-rate springs and a stiffer stabilizer bar
      A standard electronic limited-slip differential supports optimal traction and enables maximum corner exit acceleration
      Larger prop shafts and greater half-shaft asymmetry (stiffer driver’s side shaft) mitigate power hop during acceleration
      A Brembo high-performance brake system provides durability, consistency and the capability for track-day performance. The system includes 14.5-inch-diameter (370 mm) front rotors with staggered six-piston calipers and 13.3-inch-diamter (339 mm) rear rotors with four-piston calipers.

      The ATS-V also features third-generation Magnetic Ride Control and Performance Traction Management. Five driver-selectable settings include the segment’s only competition-level settings for stability and traction control.
      Magnetic Ride Control “reads” the road a thousand times per second, sending data to magneto-rheological fluid-filled dampers that can independently control the damping characteristics of all four dampers. Third-generation improvements enable 40-percent faster damping response. In fact, at 60 mph, the third-generation magnetic ride control system calculates the optimal damping force for every inch of the road.
      Functional design
      Almost every exterior panel on the ATS-V is unique, from the fascias and fenders, to the hood, rear spoiler and rocker moldings – and every one was designed to support the car’s capability.
      “All of the design elements have a purpose,” said Andrew Smith, executive director, Cadillac Global Design. “They contribute to lift reduction, enhanced cooling, reduced mass or all of the above.”
      The unique elements include:
      A lightweight carbon fiber hood features an air-extracting vent that not only pulls hot air out of the engine compartment, but helps reduce lift at speed by channeling air pulled through the radiator out and over the top of car rather than allowing trapped air to exit under the car
      Unique front and rear fascias provide optimal aero performance, with larger grille openings in the front fascia to feed more air to the new twin-turbocharged engine. Even the mesh pattern of the signature grille openings is enlarged to allow more air into the radiator and multiple heat exchangers
      A front splitter enhances handling by forcing air to push down on the front of the car rather than flow under it, where it can cause lift
      Wider fenders to accommodate 18 x 9-inch front wheels and 18 x 9.5-inch rear wheels that are wrapped with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires
      The aluminum wheels, unique to the V-Series, are constructed of a low-mass forging that helps reduce un-sprung weight for greater agility and a more direct feel to steering inputs
      The rocker moldings and rear spoiler are aero-optimized.

      Available Carbon Fiber and Track packages take aero performance and mass optimization to higher levels. The Carbon Fiber package includes a more aggressive front splitter, hood vent trim and rear diffuser, along with composite rocker extensions and a taller, body-color rear spoiler. The Track package includes the components of the Carbon Fiber package, plus the Performance Data Recorder and a low-mass battery. It also deletes the standard floor mats and tire inflator kit to save weight.
      “V-Series is the emotive core of the Cadillac brand and the apex of the Art and Science design philosophy,” said Smith. “A car offering a bold sense of arrival, serious performance, seamless integration of technology, and precision craftsmanship. The exposed carbon fiber components, for example, are book-matched on the centerline for a more precise, tailored appearance.”
      Also, the lightweight forged aluminum wheels and brake calipers are offered in three finishes, allowing owners to personalize the presence of the ATS-V.
      Performance-focused cabin
      The aura of track-inspired precision carries over to the interior, where the design and relationship of key components are aimed squarely at performance-driving ergonomics.
      “With the performance the new ATS-V is capable of delivering, the interior needs to be as functional as the other vehicles systems,” said Smith. “All of the contact points – the steering wheel, seats, shifter and pedals – are designed to make performance driving experiences direct and intuitive.”
      New, available 16-way-adjustable RECARO performance front seats are the lynchpins for the driving experience, with aggressive, adjustable bolsters that help hold the driver and front passenger in place during high-load cornering. They’ve also got a luxury-performance feel, trimmed in Mulan leather with sueded microfiber inserts and seatbacks.
      The rest of the interior features Cadillac’s handcrafted cut-and-sew elements, with decorative stitching and authentic materials, including carbon fiber. Three interior color combinations are offered: Jet Black, Jet Black with Saffron accents and Light Platinum with Jet Black accents.
      The ATS-V also features a unique version of the 5.7-inch, three-window instrument panel cluster display, with V-Series graphics and distinctive gauge readouts. It is also equipped with the latest connectivity technologies from Cadillac, including:
      CUE with Bluetooth connectivity with natural voice recognition
      Text-to-voice that converts incoming text messages to speech and reads them over the audio system speakers
      USB, auxiliary and SD memory card ports
      OnStar 4G LTE connectivity with built-in Wi-Fi hotspot.

      The Performance Data Recorder is controlled via CUE’s color touch screen and recordings can be reviewed on the screen when the vehicle is parked.
