It sounds labored because it is 237 bhp trying to lug 4,000 lbs around. It short shifts because it is smart! The new 2.0T (LSY) engine hits its torque peak of 258 lb-ft at 1,500 rpm. It hits its 237 hp power peak at 5,000 rpm and spend every bit of the last 2000 rpm running out of breathe. By 6000 rpm it is making less than 200 lb-ft. By 7000 rpm it is making closer to 150 lb-ft. You really don't want to rev that thing. The LSY is very quiet, refined and responsive from 1000 rpm through about 5000 rpm where it does its best work. In many ways it feels like the old Supercharged 3800 which -- despite popular slander -- is actually a very refined engine when not hustled. Most of the fuel economy gains come from shutting off the two middle cylinders in cruise and from the low lift economy cams also having a long intake duration which can then be phased to eat into the compression stroke and reduce the effective displacement as well has create an asymmetrically long power stroke. It's a part time "mild Atkinson" cam if you will.3 points

To harp on power in these cars is to completely miss the point. These are handling and agility cars. They are extremely satisfying drives without having to break the speed laws to get satisfaction.3 points

That's exactly the type of car they are... a Miata competitor but with a hardtop and slightly more room in the cabin.2 points

Yep, I’ll take a hellcat for power, and and 86 for a joyride.... #loveallfuncars2 points

Not when there are 4 additional engine choices above that. 3.6, 3.0TT, 4.2TT, 4.2TT-V 7 seconds to 60 is fine for most people anyway. Someone buying a base base base CT6 isn't going to be concerned with 0-60, they're going to be concerned with heated seats.2 points

The 86/BRZ sounds like it would be a really fun backroad car for Ohio's twisty backroads. Though I'd probably enjoy a Miata more w/ the top down. But would have to deal w/ 60-90 min of freeway to get to my favorite back roads.1 point

I saw one of the last Pontiac Grand Prix GT coupes turning in front of me yesterday to get on the freeway. It was probably a 2002 or 2003. It was in a metallic dark bronze color and was in near perfect condition. God, I miss good old fashioned mid size GM coupes. About a week ago, I saw a late 90s (97,98,99?) base Grand Prix sedan in what I call the Schwinn bicycle metallic blue in the library parking lot. It was beat to hell. The badge indicated it had a 3800 V6. I was surprised to see a beehive lady get in it and drive off.1 point

BMW car sales have been dropping for what- 2 years now? Surprised they keep throwing more slightly-different sized versions at the wall when their numbers have come down so far and they're in trouble financially.1 point

Guys, the 2.0t hardly sold here anyway. The base engine is effectively the 3.6. This is a Chinese market move for a chauffeur driven car.1 point

It's like early 80s Benz month here in Pittsburgh. I don't know where they all came from all of the sudden.1 point

$10,000 over a base Wrangler, but they won't sell the hybrid as a base model. It will be a premium optioned model and then get the hybrid powertrain on top of it.1 point

The EPA ratings went from 22/25/30 to 24/28/34 MPG (US) with the new 2.0 and 10-speed automatic, which is more useful in the real world (along with improved NVH characteristics) than ~6 vs ~7 seconds 0-60 MPH.1 point

I always liked your analysis of things changing and technical options @dwightlooi.1 point

At one time the Spark, Sonic, Trax, and Cruise were sold in Europe as Chevys...back before GM quit Europe. Not sure if the Spark and Sonic are staying in NA, don't recall hearing anything about them.1 point

Sad but true...end of the road is nearing for affordable V8 RWD cars...alas, it's the era of CUVs and SUVs, and an EV future is on the way.... at least the Charger and Challenger haven't devolved into FWD 4cyl generics.1 point
