  2. Here are some classics don't fit into the monthly spotting threads ... all of them seen in California. Here's a Chevy wagon of some sort (year and model unknown) in a rest area along US 101 in the vicinity of Hearst Castle. Here's a real treat. I don't recall if and when I've seen one before. I kept looking at it in this shopping center parking lot, trying to figure out what is was, and it was an EDSEL! (rear light panel looks "slightly" old Impala like)

  3. OK, here's the hacksaw murderer, with the blood of a thousand PVC pipes still in its teeth. The new faucet. Scattered remains of PVC, money wasted. New drains with nothing but stubs. And my front landing, showing signs of wham, bam, thank you ma'am construction (circa 1986). Featuring a (moveable, but heavy) ball of junk concrete.

  4. The '59 Edsel rear kind of reminds me of the '60 Chevy rear end, but more blobular.

  5. '57 Chevbo is either a mid-series 210, or a Bel Air. '59 Edsel indeed has some similarities with the rear of the '58 Chevbo. Ford was arguably top shelf in design in the '30s- Bob Gregorie was head of styling and he just KNEW how a line should go on a body. Perfect radiuses, too. And Ford still created the High Art that the first gen T-Bird is... but by '57-58, I feel Ford started to stumble. The Edsel above's rear bumper, for example, has little flow with the rear of the body- it's just kind of hanging there. Look what General Motors / Pontiac was doing the same year; bumper flows with the rear quarter, including the fender spear, and beautifully with the rear cove. General Motors was swiftly moving into the premier design house in the industry in this period.

  7. Krispy Kreme is awful, a mouth full of Lard spilled all over. Had one when it was hot and off the production line, thought it was good, went back to have another out of the box a couple hours later as the family was traveling. Tasted and felt like I would imagine when you try to take a bite out of a pile of cisco lard. Hard pass on donuts. Just do not get the appeal, I imagine for the french they would rather have a croissant than a doughnut.

  8. Seems like a neat opening to go on record by stating; every vehicle I've owned (23) has been designed & built in the U.S by a U.S. manufacturer. Silverado 2500HD was built in Flint MI. Yeah; the motor floozies dig that.

  12. The new Elantra is just around the bend and it stylistically follows in the footsteps of the new Sonata. That's a thumbs down. It looks like they're trying to reinvent their design vocabulary and niche. The exterior views are consistent but the interior views are not. I've seen two renditions of their interiors and dashboards. One is better than the other. I see the Accent going away. Too bad. The Accent is being discontinued for the Canadian market. I'm not sure if we (the U.S.A.) are included in this. There are very few of them on the lots, while Elantras, the current one, are plentiful. I surprisingly enjoyed how nicely two rentals drove and sipped fuel. The only heartburn I have is that it went from a 6-speed automatic to a CVT. Yep, CVTs and "laptop left open" infotainment centers give me heartburn.

  13. IKR, he posts a word that is associated with one posted 2 or 3 posts prior instead of the most recent. Many examples extant. LOL fermented

  14. ^ They shared chassis', not bodies. In '58, Edsel's junior series cars used an overbored version of Ford's 352 V8, measuring 361 CI. But the senior Edsels used a proprietary 410 CI V8. It was '59 that the Edsel got 'corporatized', including offering a I6 from Ford.

  15. Edsel used Ford (lower series) and Mercury bodies (upper series) in '58, and Ford-based bodies for '59 and '60. As far as engines, they were FoMoCo V8s of the era. IIRC, the 'E' in the Ford FE series engine stood for 'Edsel'.. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edsel

  16. If it's that trashed outside, it's probably fairly scruffy inside. That looks like a '79. Probably a beautiful car in its day. I think I spot the little square emblem on the landau roof indicating it's a Brougham.

  17. ^ We literally weren't talking about that, tho. -sigh- : CTS is still here, it's called the CT5. Same exact size & configuration. How are you so confoozled on this point? Were you likewise confoozed when the MB 430S was cancelled and a S430 took it's place?

  18. Agree, over all I think it looks good, I kinda wonder if they felt the upper half of the rear is what would be tweaked based on consumer feedback and could end up being more upright SUV like. Honestly, like Rivian, I think Cadillac could easily have a more upright 1990's like Suburban rear back and dump the stupid Coupe type rear end. Something like this: Agreed, The Hummer by GMC should have been shown before this as it is supposed to be on the dealer lots next summer.

  19. You guys were on this like flies on sh*t. I had edited it out quickly. My God. Next Monday, August 17, is National Vanilla Custard Day. If you have a Culver's near you, things with vanilla custard are half off. Check. And, raise your custard treat as a "cheers" to Robert DeNiro's birthday. I think it's on the 17th. I have a friend, a "paesano," with a b-day on the 18th who told me that.

  22. Hi Drew, I know most of the smart head units now have theme that allows you to choose the background image. Reading the owners guide for my head unit which I have never changed the default theme, it would seem that you can do this. I will test it it on my system this week and let ya know. My habit is to remote start the auto, unlock, get in and plug in my phone and the first thing I see is the Android screen, so I honestly have not looked to see what it does when you manually start the auto. I will test this and let you know.

  23. Not at this time. In unrelated news, after over a decade with Android (I was on the original G1 phone), I jumped ship to Apple and bought an iPhone 11 Pro in June. My Pixel XL battery could no longer hold a charge. The current Pixel 4XL got terrible reviews, particularly around battery life and I couldn't wait any longer for the 5 to come out in October. So my iPhone 11 should work with the inbuilt system for playing music. I pretty much only use Apple Music now and that works well in my Buick's system. So in light of the fact that I need to do all the fluids, undercoating, and possibly tires, a sound system is pretty low on the priority list. The other reason I'm not going to do it soon is that I don't like any of the head units that are out there. Nearly all of them light up like you're throwing some sort of disco party. I don't like that. I want something that looks as close to the stock system as possible.

  24. ^ it’s bizarre that one of those descriptors is tires, the other is rims, yet we’re all communicating here.

  25. @ocnblu Got it. 3G is the first two digits of the VIN. 3 is country code Mexico and G is for GM. So it was a Mexican built GM and there were only two of those on the list, the Avalanche and the EXT. While I wouldn't have said no to an EXT, an Avalanche popped up that I couldn't NOT buy. So, I have bought what is likely the lowest mileage 2013 Avalanche in the country. All the paperwork and loan has been finalized, I just have to pick it up on Wednesday. It's a Blue Topaz 2013 LTZ Black Diamond with only 12,800 miles on the clock. I paid $32,990 and Carvana gave me $8,100 for the Cruze. It checks all my boxes for heated/cooled seats, heated steering wheel, remote start. The only thing is doesn't have that I would have liked is a sunroof, but for such a museum piece, I will survive without it.

  27. when GM goes under, Hyundai can buy their scraps and continue to sell those new Cadillac EV's without changing the name rather than what Mary's GM wants to do with Cadillac, starve them of new excellent ICE product....develop a couple expensive low volume electric vehicles with "IQ" names and see if that will keep the brand from going under.
