I dunno about dumping Hummer, to me that sounds far too much like a bad idea waiting to happen, however doing something to saab would probably be a good idea, they're kinda a quirky brand of car that you really don't see a whole heck of a lot of over here, other than in certain areas where the cars are really well known (which means not here in Alabama), but at the same time, I don't believe selling it off to the highest bidder would be the best course of action, but then again, that's just me.

EPA to Lower Fuel Economy Ratings for 2008
76ChevyTrucker replied to BrewSwillis's topic in The Lounge
Well, here goes my two cents on the issue of fuel mileage. I know that there are flaws in the system of getting fuel mileage results which is why there are gaps in what the sticker says and what me, or you, or joe blow down the street gets. But one thing I have to say is that if you take two cars, equally loaded, such as my 2001 Impala LS with the 3.8, and my next door neighbor's 2003 Camry LE with the V6 (forgive me for not remembering the displacement) and we both drive back and forth to work and other errands, equaling up to about a 50/50, maybe 60/40 highway city driving ethic, and doing the mileage the old fashioned way....you know, looking at the trip odometer, looking at how much fuel you filled up with, and dividing it, his Camry always ponies up about 25-27, meanwhile my Impala ponies up regularly 28-32. Now I know this might be attributed to my better knowledge of how to draft semi-trucks, but the fact is that his car is newer, only has 50,000-ish miles on it and still gets worse mileage than my car with 105,000-ish miles on it. Go figure, eh? -
I like the interior...even with flashbulbs going off all over the place, I still like it. I like it so much if I were given the chance, I'd go and put a deposit on one right now (of course it would have to be one hell of a small deposit, but that's beside the point). I know that certain people want a car to fit them, and believe me, even with the negativity seen here (I'm not going to call names because I know that there are cars that everyone wants to see and there are cars that everyone doesn't, its your opinion and you're more than entitled to it), its still a beautiful car, inside and out, I like the gauges, it reminds me of the 1st generation F-bodys, and I've always liked the twin round combi-gauges like that. But I give the whole car a big, fat, "BUILD IT RIGHT NOW OR WE'RE ALL PITCHING A FIT!"

I ain't too sure about this one y'all. I'd have to agree with what youse guys said about a Durango and Town and Country mating. The front end just doesn't strike me, although the durango doesn't either, but tha'ts just me.

*has multiple joygasms* Holy balls! I need to know when the deposit can be put down because I'll trade in all my other cars for this one! I want one.... And the roofline is definintely 1st gen, which imho looked the best of all the years.

Well being someone who owns a previous generation Impala '01 Impala LS 9C1 package, 3.8L V-6, 120,000 miles and absolutely no problems, just normal maintenance, I have to say that I love my car, its ergonomically sound and mechanically sound, still gets better mileage than the sticker said and I drive the holy hell out of it. Then again, I have a friend with an '05 Accordian...and well.....I dislike it. I'm a big guy and I like a big car, and the Accord just don't strike my fancy like my Impy does. Does Honda deserve a nod for keeping the Accord design around and keeping it relatively fresh for its run, yes, I'd have to say so. Does Chevy need to be slapped for not keeping the Impala based on a Caprice-type body, but moving it to the W-body architecture, Yes, I'd more than say so. But hands down, I like my '01 a whole heck of a lot more than an Accordian...oh yeah, by the way, last night I raced an '06 SS Impala down I85 here in Alabama, I whipped my tail, but I stayed with it initially. Then we slowed down and talked, then I drove it. Gotta say 300 horses in that car is outstanding, I used to think that my 200 in my Impala was great, but the '06 SS is a helluva car.

I have to admit, compared to the current Aveo, this thing looks damn good. The mpg ratings can be understood since the car is a bit underpowered, but otherwise makes up for those shortcomings with the style and options it has. BTW, drum brakes aren't a bad thing, they still stop you and remember not too long ago, almost everything had drum brakes on the tail of it.

I dunno what it is about the Caliber, but it looks a little TOO much like a Vibe/Matrix for my tastes, the only other question would be, are they going to axe the PT Cruiser and replace it with a similar Caliber for Chrysler, or is the PT going to stay around?
-
the other kickers to your mileage is of course things that are mechanical. Like are the tires at proper pressure, is the car loaded properly, and well, there's also issues like tune ups and such that can have a great bearing on how well the car performs

I would honestly like an idea like this, but being in the parts business it would seriously piss off the shops who get paid the money by people to fix cars. Now I certainly know that I can go under the hood of my wife's Cobalt, my mom's S10, my dad's C1500, my granddad's S10 Blazer, or the C20 or C10 and tinker with everything imaginable, but that type of software should only be offered to those people who want it as an option. I say make something like than an option for those who want it, I know that I would choose it and I would know exactly what happened if the 'check engine' light came on because I read diagnostic codes all the time while I was at AutoZone and made plenty of good side money replacing oxygen sensors and the like instead of having the person take it to a shop for a fifteen minute job that's going to cost them 45-80.....which I only charge 20 for.

I do agree that we should have a very expensive and extensive driver's ed course in the US. Hell, if I had to have it when I became a liscensed Private Pilot, I should have gotten the same thing when I became a liscensed Private Driver, although I already knew how to drive and how to tear down the engine of my car, but that's beside the point. There should always be a place for some chivalry between people. I normally try to let people merge into traffic and I definitely try to maintain spacing between cars namely because on top of my main job as a parts guy with CarQuest Auto Parts, I'm also a back-up delivery driver, so I know the importance of maintaining a professional image on the road, although I will admit that I don't always show it when I'm driving my personal ride. No one can be a perfect driver, but there could damn sure be a lot more better drivers out there than there are.

To me its simple, General Motors is the #1 car and truck company in the world. Even if the whole world says Toyota or someone else is, I will still firmly believe that GM is #1 only because I know that no matter what I can always depend on my Chevys, and when I had it, my Pontiac to get me from point a to point be as fast as I want, in as much style as I want and when it does eventually break, I CAN FIX IT, and save the money as compared to the Toyotas and Lexuses that my friends own because they're constantly in the shop, for days at a time.

I'll stick with my 30mpg Impala and for shits and giggles, my 8 mpg Chevy pickup, yes, I said 8 mpg.....although that's because its 30 years old, has a 350 bored .040 over with a Holley 675cfm double pumper strapped to it with my lead foot flooring it on a regular basis and the power transferring through a performance modified Turbo-Hydramatic 350 tranny to a GM/Dana 10-bolt 3.73 gear-ratio rear end. Nice ain't it?
-
what in the hell is that yellow thing? And I have been behind a LR before and it is a little hard to tell when its braking since well, you have the two low, very low mounted brake lights that don't cast a big shadow at all, and if the third light is out, you might as well just stare at the bumper.
-
The grill looks fine to me and the second picture does look more refined and thought out, hell I might buy one if it comes to the US to replace my Impala and give me something else to buy whilst I rebuild my main driver ('76 Chevy C-10 long-bed, fleetside)

There's really only one downside to the turbo, well two if you're going to be really nit-picky, the one being that it takes so much away from the engine oil supply by making so much doggoned heat that it really breaks down oil. And another thing is like rkm said, its considered expendable, just like an oil filter, meanwhile a supercharger isn't as susceptible to the impact that a turbo has, and well, there's no lag.

2008 Durango Hybrid - It's "official" (video!)
76ChevyTrucker replied to BrewSwillis's topic in Chrysler
From the way I undestand it, the Toyota and Honda hybrid systems really don't use the gasoline engine at all and mostly run on the electric motors, using the gas engine as essentially a big damn generator. Meanwhile the two-mode system still uses the gas engine as a driving engine when needed, meanwhile reverting back to the electric engine at speed to conserve fuel. And of course, if I'm wrong, then it won't be the first time. -
Fleet COTY isn't exactly the top of the mountain when it comes to awards, but you have to think of all the crap that fleet vehicles go through. Especially if the new Impalas are turned into 9C1 spec police vehicles....long hours of idling with a few throttle hard and balls to the wall take offs and brakings....not exactly grandma driving to the church house on sunday morning. so I wouldn't say that the new Impala getting Fleet COTY is a bad thing, I mean I have a '01 that is a 9C1 car and it drives every day, matter of fact, its lived through 110,000 miles of me driving the piss out of it, so bad-mouthing the car isn't a good idea, especially given that the Impala has always been a reliable, good car, hands down.
-
You know, I don't honestly mind the bland-ish styling, considering that damn near everything is really bland looking, and if someone makes something different, they get yelled at for it being Retro, so I'd have to say, V8, RWD, bring it on, I'll buy one.
-
Good question....how many vehicles does this affect, although it probably won't show up over here, due to the fact that it only effects truly Japanese Toyotas....shame shame
-
I wouldn't say that the 4.3L 262cid V-6 is a crude engine, you have to remember what the engine essentially is....a 5.7L 350cid V-8 with a few parts missing, and I don't hear many people calling them crude.

Nor have I, but a replacement for the tried and true Northstar engine is about time coming...considering.

Sketch Competition 2 - RWD Pontiac sedan!
76ChevyTrucker replied to Northstar's topic in Sketch Competitions
Well y'all....I'll be dropping out of the competition. I've got a great idea, but I can't get it down to paper, and when I start to, I end up with something that looks like a crack addict drew it, so I must respectifully remove myself. -
Sketch Competition 2 - RWD Pontiac sedan!
76ChevyTrucker replied to Northstar's topic in Sketch Competitions
Even though I'm not entirely Pontiac-loving, I have to admit that I absolutely adored my '99 Ponch GA SE2 coupe, until it got t-boned...but that's another story, I'll see if I can actually come up with a V8 powered, RWD Pontiac sedan for this one....maybe a new Bonneville-type but with something increadibly wild. -
You know, scarily enough, this does look good. I like the Jetta little more than the Passat and I definitely agree that the Touraeg was a BAD idea, but if that's what VW wants to do, more power to 'em
