Alfa Romeo will soon be joining the crossover craze with the launch of the Stelvio this summer. It will begin at $42,990 (includes a $995 destination charge) for the base model and $44,990 for the Ti.

What do you get for the money? The Stelvio comes with 18-inch aluminum wheels, leather, rear parking sensors, backup camera, power liftgate, and push-button start. Opt for the Ti to get 19-inch wheels, heated front seats and steering wheel; larger infotainment display, and wood trim. An optional Sport package brings larger wheels (19-inch for the Stelvio, 20- for Ti), retuned suspension, and other sporty touches. Ti models can also get a Lusso package that brings higher-quality leather, power seats, and a different design for the 19-inch wheels.

Both models feature the same 2.0L turbo-four offering up 280 horsepower and 306 pound-feet of torque. Power is routed to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic. 0-60 mph takes only 5.4 seconds.

One model that will not be available at launch is the fire-breathing Stelvio Quadrifoglio with its 505 horsepower twin-turbo V6. Pricing and a release timeframe will be announced at a later date.

Pretty competitive pricing for the performance that you get.   It will probably win every comparison test also.  Question is will anyone buy it?  Most crossover buyers will have no idea what it is and think a Lexus RX is sporty.    I can't wait for the 500 hp compact SUV showdown between the Quadrifoglio and GLC 63 and Macan Turbo S.

Edit: never mind on the Macan Turbo, even with the performance package it is only 440 hp, weak!

An RX fighter that can lay waste to a Lexus GS F.  I think the Stelvio Quadrifoglio is faster than a Corvette, which is crazy for an SUV.

I personally doubt that ANY crossover can be faster than a Corvette.  Just on weight alone, any Vette can outrun any Stevio.  Then again, I do hope that Alfa Romeo is crazy enough to challenge a Corvette in a race with their Stelvio.

Just because a car carries the Corvette name, doesn't automatically mean it will kill this and that.  In fact, a Stingray would pretty well get whipped by an X5M o X6M in the quickness category.  Never mind the Cayenne Turbo and Turbo S and upcoming Hellcat Grand Cherokee. 


Anyway, this will easily become Alfa's volume seller.

The slowest Vette has a 0-60 time of 3.8 while the fastest X5M and X6M is 3.8, while weighing almost a ton less than both. No way in hell those two are "quicker". Sorry.

The GC Trackhawk supposedly does 0-60 in 3.5 sec, but it's kind of pointless comparing a performance CUV/SUV with a sports car...different vehicles for different use cases.

And he only brought up the BMWs which are both six figure cars. Bring in the six figure Z06 and it's not even worth debating.

The Porsche Cayenne Turbo S is probably in the same range as the BMWs...3.5/3.8 sec is pretty impressive for 5000-5500lb SUVs/CUVs, though... 

(it is amusing how 0-60 times in general have changed since I was a teenager in the 80s, thought my 5.0 Mustang w/ 6.2 sec 0-60 was fast then...)

To me, that market is beyond pointless when they are nothing more than overdressed mommy mobiles. Just my opinion though.

I don't really get the high performance CUV/SUV niche...I'd rather have a Trailhawk over a Trackhawk.   I like luxury SUVs with some off road capability...practical, rugged, yet comfortable.

SUVs are designed for utility (although there is nothing wrong with some luxury and comfort while you do it), not wannabe drag racing. If you want to drag race, get a damn sports car.

Or a muscle car....sports cars are more about the whole driving experience, not just simple straight line performance (which is such a one-dimensional measurement of performance).

In a big way the Stelvio is competition for the E-class, CTS, A6 and 5-series.  Buyers have been trading out of mid size sedans into small SUVs for years, now comes along an SUV that will set The Nurburgring lap time record for an SUV if it hasn't already and he capable of sub 4 second 0-60 times. You are getting SUV practicality and space with E43 or ATS-V performance.  

Sedans are hurting now sadly, I imagine they will more so as more performance crossovers come along.  And I prefer a sedan, luckily the one I like isn't going away but I bet the RLX and GS go away.

It's a tall hatchback... it's barely even a crossover.

There are performance SUVs that are 3.5s, Isn't the Model X also like in the high 2s?  I am also sure the 3.5 for the Trackhawk is conservative.  And price wasn't brought up, just a statement that no CUV could beat any Vette which is wrong, and that isn't even including alder Vettes which could be MUCH slower.  How about an 82 model?  A year was not mentioned either btw.  QUit being bitchy because someone said something you take as negative about a precious GM product.

Off topic, but that  5.0 mustang 0-60 is basically dead even with my 2012 Turbo Bug.  Just neat I think.

Stop moving the bar. You only mentioned the BMWs. I merely offered the counter. Oh and there are Vettes that are quicker than the X as well (Z06) so...

You get way way too uptight about the GM thing so just give that a rest already because I honestly couldn't care less about any brand as a whole. You're the one that gets hung up on any criticism of your favorite brand and any chance to slam GM or Ford.

Exactly with a terrible history of garbage built autos out of Italy, questionable style, and Meh 4 banger performance. I see nothing to compel people to buy. Wasted billions on Alfa that should have just been left in the history books.
