  1. • Cadillac had no big block until it had a small block, but even then it’s 350 (‘76) was forged at Olds... so still only 1 block at that point. • Yes; there were 3 co-existing 455s, tho Olds got theirs out in ‘68 and Pontiac & Buick in ‘70. Nothing interchanges. • Each Division had their own proprietary engine programs & foundries to produce them. This went back to the independent roots of each Division; Cadillac’s engine building began in 1890.

  3. @oldshurst442 A lot of good info there! As for video 1, someone needs to inform the person or party who uploaded it that they've misspelled the title. It should be "C'e' La Luna Mezzo Mare" - apostrophe and accent over the e; no h. They way it's spelled, with Che, means the person was thinking it would be pronounced like it is in Spanish. It's not. Instead, "che" would be pronounced as "keh" in Italian.

  4. Stand alone option? What is this; 1995?? There's a dipshit at every corporation 'forcing' this. In order to get a 2.0T in a sonata, you jump -guess what- $10K to the top-tier Limited (over the base sedan). I would love for GM to do ala carte options, but that industry ship sailed 2 decades ago, so it makes no sense to me to get outraged about it.

  5. we don't need to settle for the choices being offered if the choices being offered are market reasons. Some dipshit at Buick an in interview said they were dropping the higher power 1.4 in the Encore because it wasn't selling (no demand). No, it wasn't selling because you didn't package it correctly. you made someone upgrade packages to get it, and most likely that drove a huge price increase. And, you simply didn't make it available. So, had they made it a standalone and offered it on all trims or even simply made the higher power motor the base motor, they acted like typical GM. but maybe they saved a tenth of mpg on CAFE by doing it.......why? not because of demand but because of regulations. I'll use that Malibu as an example again. the price of the larger motor (which is just simply a larger version of the same thing....4 pistons, same number of valves, etc. just physically a bit bigger. package it up so you cannot find one without buying a fully loaded version thats 10k more or so than the base. Purposely youre doing that as GM to discourage anyone from buying the larger motor because what you really want to do is cave to the feds and keep your CAFE low. You figure 10 grand or so is enough of a penalty to the consumer for wanting power and the smart consumer knows there is a tradeoff between power and FE, you should let them make the choice. I'm assuming the powertrain cost different is not much so offer the choice to the market and let them decide apples to apples.

  6. Many Italians live in Corfu. Not far away from Brindisi, hence a ferry route between Brindisi and Corfu. My mom came from the island just below, the biggest in the Ionian. Kephalonia. I had a friend that came from Corfu, (his parents) and he often visited Italy when he went to Greece. Ive only been to Greece. Many times. But Im dying to visit Italy. My daughter has a Eurotrip in a couple of years, and guess what? Her trip for her graduating year is...Switzerland and...ITALY!!! She is sooooo happy. And I for her!!! If you havent seen the movie Captain Correlli's Mandolin, I suggest you see it. My mom's parents knew of the family (see it and you'll understand) and I have a friend or two that were extras in the movie. Thanks to the Romans, the Greek world survived. Rome conquered Greece, but because Rome wanted to model their empire along Greek culture, art, architecture, politics, language in trade routes, etc, the cradle of Western civilization has been credited to the Greeks, but 'twas the Romans that spread and KEPT Hellenism around more than the Greeks themselves could have ever imagined. So who conquered who??? LOL I guess both cultures realize this and both of our cultures greatly respect one another. This is what I adore. 1000s of years later and Italy tries to conquer Greece again, this time they lose, but because Germany had other plans, Greece fell to the Axis. When when the Italians became enemies of Germany, Greece and the Greeks protected the Italian soldiers from the Germans towards the end of the war. Una Faccia, una razza...1000s of years in the making... Sicily...if Im not mistaken, Poseidon's son Polyphemus, from the island of the Cyclops, from Homer's Odyssey, is said to be, Sicily.

  14. Well the inevitable finally happened, Buick has confirmed that the Regal will not be returning to the U.S. after the 2020 model year. After that, Buick will be an all-SUV brand. The move comes as light-truck sales take 70% of the U.S. market and 90% of all Buick sales. While the Regal retreats from these shores, it will still continue to be sold in China where demand remains strong. As of the end of Q3 this year, Buick moved only 8,849 units of Regal year to date. That's down 19.6% from the year prior. Regal's demise was hinted at during the Los Angeles Auto Show where no Regals were on display. The Buick Lacrosse sedan and Buick Cascada convertible were canceled earlier this year. Starting next year, the Buick Encore GX will join the lineup, a slightly larger iteration of the Buick Encore, but on a new platform and using a new 3-cylinder engine. View full article

  16. I knew this would happen at least a year ago. All one needed to do is go into the Buick showroom when their car is being serviced and see the now lone LaCrosse and Regal over in a corner, or maybe just one of them. When the LaCrosse was on the chopping block, I knew the Regal would be, too. It's weird because, from the dim days where even Buicks had marginal build quality, the brand had come a long ways. At this point, ALL of General Motors will be offering only ONE passenger car that is mid- to full-sized and mid-priced, and that's the Malibu. Would I have thought this was possible as a teen or in my 20s? No. This is just sad. I am now wondering if GM will recant along the way and start expanding their sedan or coupe line in the future because some customers will want them, even though the Asians and the Europeans seem to be content to address North America's demand for sedans.

  18. I know that Cadillac used the 350 V8 in the first Seville but I kept it to four divisions because, in that case, they were very forthcoming that Oldsmobile had produced the engine specifically for them, but with (then rudimentary) fuel injection instead of a carburetor. It still looked like a carbureted engine when you lifted up the hood of a Seville with a 350 V8. Good move on Cadillac's part. That's probably why you sometimes still see first-gen Sevilles on the road today. What a success story for Cadillac.

  20. For me the choice is based on past auto's from those vendors so I would put the V8's in this Order: Olds Chevy Pontiac Buick Curiosity Question to the Yoda of all things old. So the big blocks in the Cadillac, Buick, Olds and Chevy all came from the same department in GM?

  21. @trinacriabob I looked through the thread in the Forum Frogger posted and while cool that you can do an update yourself, even with Shielded wire there was low engine noise. I would save up and you can get some nice 300 to 400 Android / Apple head units for your auto that would get you modern current. Work great and I honestly cannot believe I waited so long to do it in my SS. Worth the money. I went to Car Toys. You can also get the head unit, wiring harness, etc. all online and do the install yourself.

  22. Note that those were slightly fudged numbers for marketing purposes; the Pontiac 350 was actually a 355. Other ‘350’s might also be a bit off (nothing like daimler calling a 4.0L engine a ‘560’ tho! ? ) I have no preferences here, as I’m a big block guy and not much interchanges. I can tell you that the Buick 350 -like it’s big brother- has a really great torque plot.

  24. Haha. There's a lot of truth to that. Greeks have left an indelible (still standing!) mark on Sicily and the southern provinces of Italy, at places like Paestum. I haven't been to Greece as many times as I should have! I've been to Athens and 3 islands. I'd like to go to Athens and then to Corfu (Kerkyra) and get back to Italy from there ... on an overnight ferry ... that way, the passage is just a little bit more in $ than a hotel room and that includes a cabin. It would nice to get up early and see the ferry approach the Italian coast at Bari or Brindisi ... both on the heel of the peninsula. There's no place like the Med!

  32. 100 pages of music discussions ... fine with me ... Have always liked these ... over the years, I finally came to know the name of the artist and the songs. I don't care how much you like "Stairway to Heaven" or "The Immigrant Song," the craftsmanship in these compositions is still way up there. Vince Guaraldi, the jazz musician who composed them, died at a fairly young age and is interred in the same cemetery as Joe DiMaggio. Colma, CA is the "cemetery suburb" used mostly by Catholics and Italians immediately south of San Francisco.

  35. Been seeing more of the new style Altimas lately. They all seem to have 'AWD" badges on them. Nissan's not gonna get rich on Altima sales though. TIme for a new Rogue though, those sell like hot cakes around here. Had Nissan turned their lineups over more quickly I don't think they would have these issues. Infiniti's behind the curve. The new crossover of theirs is a bit of a styling dud and thats the one that has to hit the meat of the luxury crossover market for them. I don't think its been doing that. I think we underestimate still how much over the decades the car buying public has been drinking the 'Honda and Toyota are best, most reliable' kool aid. Why people buy Toyotas, I truly do not understand, but they can poop on a plate and make straight cash homey doing so, no questions asked. I do admit to liking the current RAV4, but everything else Toyota is 'why would you buy that over ______?" to me...... Until Nissan gains back that swagger like when they introduced the game changing Altima style in the early 00's (or whenever that was).. and breathes a hint of performance image back into their products, it may be tough. Right now they have to sell themselves on easy credit and cheap payments like many other manufacturers do but it becomes a problem when you have to have easier credit and cheaper payments then Hyundai to move metal.

  36. Dozens of unique vehicles sell less than 30K per year. Volume is immaterial, profit is the prime consideration. But even then: Luckily, Cadillac, and in turn; General Motors, produces dozen & dozens & dozens of other models. Tesla only builds like 11K Model S per year. Course; they don't make a profit... but they're still building the thing. We've read some wags claim that 'Chevy doesn't make any money; too many low margin models' and 'Buick sales are slowing every year; it can't be making a profit' and 'Cadillac doesn't sell 2 million units/year; therefore they can't be making a profit'. Solid, disconnected thinking there, that. Gee, I don't think GMC is making $11 billion in profit all by itself.

  37. Chassis, platform, architecture, whatever you want to call the mechanical running gear. That is the expensive part, you need to spread that around and CT6 doesn’t have that luxury. Lamborghini is over 50% SUV at this point, it is ridiculous it that is the way it is now. That is why Cadillac should have been building Omega platform SUVs rather than a full size sedan with a turbo 4 engine CT6 that was doomed to fail from the start.
    1 point
  38. Except none of those are SUVs. Something like 70% of the market is SUV/truck and probably more for American car companies. Camaro sales are tanking, Impala and all the other large sedans are tanking. Cadillac should be building blacking V8 SUVs, that would outsell any V8 powered sedan they could come up with.
    1 point
  39. But the cost is higher on CT6. GM could be losing money on every one they build because there is no economies of scale. The A8 isn’t adding any major development cost when a dozen cars are on that platform and those engines and transmissions are all shared.
    1 point
  40. All companies are in the business to make money but what sets some of them apart is the non-stop bean counting yet still wasting money and R&D (see the money spent on developing the CT6). Furthermore, RWD or FWD, at least the Aviator has real engine options with power to boot. Lincoln has somehow done what Cadillac should have already been doing (and no I am not a fan of Lincoln or the Aviator). What’s the XT6 rocking bedsides being sat upon the wrong platform (again the bean counting by forgoing the Omega platform)? That 3.6L that’s in just about everything else GM makes? The point here is that you can make money and still act like you give a damn about the little things. GM has a mixed record with that, at best.

  41. Audi has sold anywhere from 15,000 to 40,000 A8s per year world wide over the past 10 years, lets call it like 25k per year average. Probably comparable with CT6 in USA and China combined numbers. But the big difference is the A8 is build on the Volkswagen MLB chassis which is also used for: A4, A5, A6, A7, Q5, Q7, Q8, E-Tron, Bentley Flying Spur, Bentley Continental, Bentley Bentayga, VW Toureg, Porsche Cayenne, Porsche Macan and Lamborghini Urus. So what do all those sell in volume? Has to be over 1 million units a year worldwide.

  43. MB has some sort of 'under the table' set-up where half the incentive is factory and the other half goes thru the dealer. At one point the factory was giving like 6K off, but the actual purchase price ended up being like 13K off (s-class).

  44. no she is the problem if all that is being offered to the market is 1.3 litre subcompact crossovers. i have no problem with the market switch from sedans to crossovers, my beef is the regulations and side agendas that force the auto industry to offer smaller and smaller vehicles with tiny buzz bomb engines as the norm, and if you don't buy that, you get killed with a huge upcharge, just if you want a v6, good acceleration, and some elbow room. cadillac is a great example. absolutely cadillac took a sales hit on their sedans because of their size. I can't tell you how many times i heard people at auto shows looking at cadillacs say (regarding the CTS and ATS) too small, not big enough, uncomfortable. etc. Part of luxury is ample accommodations. Of course you are going to pick an XT5 if you are dropping 50-60k when the ATS is unlivable for a lot of people and the CTS is even cramped for many. One reason I love our Pacifica van is there is no shortage of space, and it was not overpriced as such with all the room and a v6. I also did have a Malibu, 2016 nice car. Saw a new Altima AWD on the road today. A relative just got a Sonata. Some folks will still buy sedans but they need to have better powertrain options at a reasonable cost than just the EPA compliance special. I would have looked at another Malibu but you can only get the 2.0 with the Premier, which ends up being 10 grand more for a turbo four. That turbo four should be an alacarte 1500 dollar option. Let me decide if i want the fuel economy of the base motor.

You're not going to be able to override your local NPR broadcast for example. 2. Depends entirely on the app you are using to play music. If you are playing music that is stored on your phone, no data usage. If you are using Pandora or Spotify, you'll have data usage. 3. The FM transmitter devices will not control your phone playlist. All they do is transmit the music. Unfortunately, you'll have to control all the music playback from your phone's app.
