  1. ^ Quite true; that’s really not much different. I’d prefer a different name there. Ford has a heavy-handed history of repurposing names. As an EV, the Mustang Mach-E is likely to be near the top performance level of the line, in keeping with the original. With the Buick concept, it just comes off as a quick ‘electric’ grab that appeals to folk that need to be spoon-fed their marketing pablum, rather than being remotely in the same place the original Electra was.

  9. Hard to remember the last time a brand new vehicle was discounted BEFORE it hits the lots. Most manufacturers can take advantage of goodwill and a rush of customers at this stage of a vehicle's life.

  10. Astro also didn't stay in the same segment--went from a GMC semi tractor to a Chevy van. And Calais went from being a full size Cadillac sedan to a compact Olds... As for the Electra concept--who says it will be cramped? It may be luxurious and spacious...

  12. Just read about these big Ford recalls on the morning News feed. Especially concerning are the "brake" lines that break Backup camera issue sounds like it's more of an electrical voltage drop issue than just the cameras' too.

  13. @Drew Dowdell You got the 300C you've been wanting! Shhh...nobody tell Albert I like the two tone interior when the lighter colors aren't overdone and the dash isn't a light color. A light colored dash reflects up on the windshield when it's sunny creating a distraction, and once you notice it it will drive you crazy, so a black or dark colored dash is the way to go. Congrats!

  14. ^ All those aforementioned names stayed in the same segment (even Safari > Safari stays in the wagon/ tall wagon cargo segment). Going from a line of various bodystyles, top tier luxury cars, to a cramped CUV feels a lot different. And too gratuitous.

  15. Keep in mind this is in China, so it's a new nameplate there...and it's a nameplate that has been dormant for 30 years in the US. It's a perfect name for an EV---Electra-> Electric... GM has a history of repurposing names also, even moving them across brands...Astro, Blazer, Calais, Safari, Trailblazer, etc... and since Electra has been dormant for 30 years, it makes sense to use it again for the future, esp. since the name is so evocative of Electric.

  16. While the original Electra was a sedan of road going enjoyment. It was the past though and I still believe it was the right move to repurpose the name for the 21st century of EVs. Yes the Concept needs major work, but this does at least keep the name alive and sets the expectation that some thing better is to come IMHO.

  18. @David My comment was in response to @balthazar critic that they used old nameplate for a new EV. It is no different of Ford using Mach nameplate for EV crossover.

  19. Not just trucks, Chevy has discounts on SUVs as well. $2.5k on Traverse for example. So what is the big deal with Ford lowering price on Mache E to stay competitive.
    1 point
  20. Yeah, its a good thing Ford doesn’t offer massive discounts on their best selling models like the F-Series. Oh wait. It should be noted that they did not change the price of the GT model and most trims only dropped $1000. I’m sure those little facts don’t help your narrative that all EVs suck but there you have it.

  21. Not in that form, but a toned-down for production version would be plausible. This is as in they said in the olden days a 'dream car' or concept.

  22. I will have to TOTALLY DISAGREE, Electra is the Perfect Name Plate for a Buick EV. This is not about sticking to the past history but taking the name plate and auto badge into the future. EV's are the future, Buick has a Future for sure in China and EV's are the future. No better name plate for a Buick EV. The all-electric crossover offers a sneak peek at Buick’s vision for a new intelligent electric future. “Today, Buick’s innovative thinking and imagination of future intelligent mobility have reached the next level with the Electra,” said Sam Basile, executive vice president of SAIC-GM. “I am confident that the aesthetics and technology innovations reflected on the Electra will ultimately help reset consumers’ expectations, just as all previous Buick concepts have done.” Adopting the new “potential energy” design language, the Electra emphasizes clean and bold styling with seamless integrated technology. It comes with a new-generation electric propulsion system and the advanced Ultium battery, along with a variety of connected and intelligent driving technologies, demonstrating Buick’s ongoing evolution toward the future of personal mobility. “Building on Buick’s proven leadership in electrification, the Electra represents the brand’s ambition to bring together beautiful styling and intelligent connectivity in the new era of zero emissions,” said Molly Peck, executive director of Buick Sales and Marketing at SAIC-GM. “The advanced Ultium battery unlocks the exciting new possibilities for what future EVs will look like. The Electra fully leverages state-of-the-art technology to set a new standard for future EV design and personal mobility.” The Electra is the latest global concept vehicle developed by GM’s Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC) automotive engineering and design joint venture in Shanghai, backed by GM’s global resources. It is named after an iconic Buick flagship model that originally represented one of the three shields in the brand’s logo. Forward-looking design inspired by a space capsule Combining the athletic look of a four-seat crossover with Gran Turismo aesthetics, the Electra previews Buick’s next-generation design language for electric vehicles. Adopting a pure design philosophy, the Electra has clean and minimalist styling inspired by a space capsule. The evolving sculptural beauty is distinguished by a spacious glass interior pod situated in an aerodynamic wing-form bodyshell. The glass canopy extends from near the front of the hood to the rear. The Electra’s innovative “potential energy” design language is characterized by sculptural surfaces in front, along the sides, and in its wheels and lamps. It reinforces the elegant overall shape while emphasizing the dynamic stance like an arrow being released. This “moving tension” is also reflected through its gradient light silver exterior tone in the front end that progressively transitions to dark silver in back. The illuminated Buick badge integrates a flow-through design. Along with 23-inch wheels featuring an optimal design, it helps enhance aerodynamics while contributing to the Electra’s futuristic look. Its “breathing” front and rear Matrix LED lamps feature parametrical mathematic lighting strings with a three-dimensional effect. They are complemented by a full LED-illuminated grille and rear screen nameplate to provide dramatic digital lighting interaction. The Electra’s butterfly wing doors support facial recognition and provide a robust opening for convenient access. There is also a hidden floating skateboard integrated with the stoplight under the rear bumper to expand users’ personal mobility options. Zero-gravity environment with seamless technology integration The Electra’s four-seat interior takes full advantage of the all-new electric vehicle architecture developed by GM, with an optimized battery layout. Together with the lack of traditional A/B pillars, the result is a maximum extension of the cabin with a longer wheelbase, a more efficient package and a more spacious, open interior. The Electra interior has a sculptural spaceship-like cradle, without a traditional instrument panel. The large curved display is a central feature. A retractable steering wheel and suspended seats, supported by an all-new light-weighted armature structure, creates a visual effect of zero gravity inside the cabin. The Electra’s color palette, including copper gold trim surrounding the cabin and dark trim on the exterior frame, replicates the atmosphere of outer space. The interior seamlessly integrates technologies such as a concealed air-conditioning system, ambient lighting and an electronic rearview mirror. The Electra provides functionality and convenience with features available when the user needs them. Intuitive and immersive user experience The Electra offers an intuitive and immersive user experience that rewards all the senses. Buick’s next-generation eConnect connectivity system runs on the distinctively large retina display with industry-leading freeform curved screen technology, expanding the viewing area for the driver with an immersive visual experience. The advanced eConnect system supports remote over-the-air (OTA) updates and enables a connected experience by providing on-demand driving information, advanced driver assistant system details and infotainment control. The introduction of a large augmented reality-enhanced head-up display with advanced live-view navigation adds to the Electra’s intuitive multi-screen interactive user interface. The Electra is also equipped with the next generation of Buick’s intelligent AI Voice Assistant. Users can fully manage the vehicle’s functions with smooth and precise human-machine voice interaction, such as controlling the air-conditioning, accessing home devices and adjusting the driving mode. Advanced electrification technology and smart mobility Leveraging GM’s global EV expertise, the Electra is supported by its new-generation high-performance modular electric propulsion system. Utilizing the advanced Ultium battery, the Electra has a range of more than 660 kilometers on a single charge, making it ideal for daily commutes as well as family trips. Thanks to the industry-leading wireless battery management system, the Ultium battery reduces wires within the battery by 90%. It also helps balance chemistry within the individual battery cell groups and conduct real-time battery pack checks to safeguard battery health. The Electra’s Ultium drive unit has high-performance motors in both the front and the rear to ensure optimized power output. It has maximum power of 435 kW, enabling 0-100 kilometer per hour acceleration of just 4.3 seconds. Additional vehicle highlights for future mobility include GM’s next-generation intelligent driving technology with door to-door smart mobility solutions, as well as V2X technologies, to offer a safe and intelligent ride with peace of mind. Buick has found success offering premium SUVs and cars with sculptural designs, refined performance, modern interiors and thoughtful personal technologies. Buick’s award-winning customer service and sales experience, along with the Avenir trim, the highest expression of Buick luxury, are attracting new buyers to experience Buick’s unique approach to attainable luxury in North America and China. Buick has sold over 10 million vehicles in China since its introduction by SAIC-GM in 1998. More information about Buick vehicles in China, its largest market, is available at www.Buick.com.cn.

  23. As such every Pickup Truck out there ICE and EV are over priced especially with the crazy $7,500 to $12,000 discounts being thrown on the hoods now.

  24. Most all EVs are overpriced for what you get. Some are going to say there's a strict difference between incentives and MSRP cuts, but ultimately both are discounts to entice buyers.

  26. Apparently my '40 has procedures to adjust the valves, tho I've not poked inside the motor and I don't hear any clattering. - - - - - I BESEECH anyone to tell me the benefit of this ("semi-autonomous driving"). It's FAR easier and more comfortable to actually grip something (the wheel) than hold your hands, flaoting, in mid-air. :

  29. As we discussed recently...GREATTTTT choice. Love it. AWD and the 3.6L/8-speed in these is a pleasure, and feels even balsier, with the changes in gearing. All all the extra options and a great color combo, and check, check, check. Awesome. Even I approve?

  35. Trades have to pay to get listed, I think it was $750 for the first year, about $450 after that. This was about 5 or 6 years ago, when they tried to recruit me (called 6 or 8 times). The Better Business Bureau is another 'pay to play' association; if you aren't in the 'club' the consumer complaints go nowhere. The BBB has no idea my business even exists. I don't care to bid against others, which is the de facto set-up thru HomeAdvisor. I mean; I will bid against others if I walk into that scenario, but I have a staunch policy of not altering my bid because of that, or if the homeowner pressures me to ("Is your price negotiable?" or "Contractor B underbid you by X"). No; it's not negotiable and, I don't give a shit what someone else bids. Go ahead- take the job. I feel like HA puts price before anything else (in the mind of the consumer), leading to 1. downward price pressure, 2. a LOT of wasted time running around doing estimates, 3. higher chances for someone like me who does NOT put lowest possible price first to not get the job bid. Which equals even more wasted time. I get about 90% of the jobs I bid. 14 years, not a single ad placed, no truck lettering, no lawn signs, no networking, no HomeAdvisor, no internet. All word of mouth- the best possible method. Personalized recommendation, not anonymous 'cyber reviews'. Work all the time- have more than I can handle. In one tiny town near me (pop. around 700), I've worked in 5 different houses there, plus just talked to a 6th earlier this month. Just got a glowing report from a tenant to the landlord on a list of things I did on a house, and I barely dealt with the tenant. Maintained communications (it took about 5 visits), arrived when I said I would within 10 mins, cleaned up afterward. Common sense/courtesy. Comment was 'you can tell when someone really cares about their work and is doing a really good job'. "Meticulous" is probably the most common compliment. That right there is worth more money. Does HomeAdvisor have a formula to compensate the contractor who performs above & beyond? Nope, not feasible for them. I disremember the details, but prior to the renaming as HomeAdvisor, there was some sort of major legal issues the company had to distance themselves from. Shady practices/lawsuit sort of thing. I don't know if the same parties are still involved or not, but like I've illustrated above- I think these anonymous "services" are overhyped and under-performing. You asked.

  36. I've said it here a good dozen times; I think this is a terrible mis-appropriation of the storied nameplate. Sure, the crowd that has come to lean on the overly-simplistic 'A-B-C, 1-2-3' naming mindset will applaud, but it's still a travesty. None-the-less, here it is, threatening to return. Hopefully, it'll be another scenario like the '08 Invicta concept, and it'll remain peacefully dormant.
