  1. Or Roger Smith... the horrible, cheap look-alike FWD mediocrity--X-, J-, A-, N-, L- body generics hurt GM immeasurably in the 80s...bland, soulless, styleless appliances. Anyway, that is best put in the past and forgotten--a sad chapter in GM's history. Anyway, back on topic, sharing components across brands shouldn't be a problem for VW, nothing new--Porsches have used Audi engines and products in the past, Audis have used VW engines, etc. They have been sharing platforms and some engines across the brands for a while, yet keep distinct styling (and presumably driving characteristics). Keep in mind it's been less than a decade since the full Porsche acquisition by VW AG, Audi's current V8 and Porsche's current V8 were developed before that...long time lines in the car biz...
  2. Heh-heh, yeah...I'm just being a cold-hearted cynical realist. I used to care about such things also...
  3. Given the mess FCA is in and the way the market is shifting, I do wonder if there will be a next gen Charger or 300..
  4. I like the 2014 CTS grille better w/ the older emblem with wreath than the newer grille with horizontal badge.
  5. I like the interior design...looks more upscale than a typical appliance....the white and black looks good, but it would require a lot of upkeep to stay clean and look good..at least they are going with some color choices beyond the usual boring gray.
  6. You are overthinking this...bringing this back to reality, I really doubt if many customers of Audis actually care...it's just a black and silver component under the hood that they never look at...it just doesn't matter. Remember, these are typically leased luxury cars, people drive them 2-3 years, trade on another.... Lamborghini has used Audi-based V8s for years now...they still catch fire and crash regardless of the source of the engine.
  7. Yeah, I guess internal fighting and differing timelines kept this from happening sooner....since VW AGs overall goal is to a have few shared platform/component sets, it doesn't make sense for brands to not share engines, at least the basic engine w/ individual brand tuning and output levels..
  8. Given the popularity of CUVs, I also think a CUV rear will be coming to more cars...more cars shaped like the Malibu Maxx (without the horrific blandness, hopefully) or the Opel Signum....the return of the non-fastback 5dr hatchback or a small sloped/vertical trunklid...
  9. Where do you think it's going to go? It's mostly for aerodynamics, I think..
  10. It's got some of the new Civic styling cues like the taillights combined with the 6-light fastback greenhouse that has become pretty common in recent years (Fusion, Malibu, Sonata, etc).
  11. Whilst out and about this afternoon, I saw a clean white w/ blue stripes '69 Trans Am, and an odd tow truck... red early 00s Silverado HD with stock longbed, with a long beam at an angle mounted in the bed with a large rusty metal cross shaped graboid at the end of the beam... name of the business was something Recovery (the UK English term for a wrecker service). No roof lights like on the cab like a normal wrecker, makes me think it was used for low-profile work like reposessions...
  12. The early 90s Accord was one of the better styled Accord generations, IMO...they were crisp and clean, with a low beltline and big windows, great outward visibility..
  13. The two tone interiors definitely are a big improvement over basic despair gray or black.
  14. Interesting..first time Honda has gone with a 6 window greenhouse for the Accord (and likewise for the current Civic, I believe). The dash style reminds me a lot of current BMWs...
  15. You never know..it's happened with other consumer products.
  16. J-Pace is a cool idea... yeah, the 'e-' prefix would seem appropriate for a pure electric...the 'i' prefix makes me think of Apple products.
  17. Nah, I was being facetious...pointing out the incongruity relative to the competition..though I do wonder if some prospective customers are confused when they discover the XE, XF, etc aren't crossovers...
  18. The thing that I realized about Jag is they have their naming scheme out of whack..everyone else uses X to signify crossover---X3, X5, QX, etc but because of historic naming like XJ and XK their cars have the X prefix...
  19. I'm not sure which of their US-market appliances the i30 is related to...Accent or Elantra? There is an Elantra hatch in the US (GT) but this doesn't look quite the same... Edit: the i30 is the Elantra GT, but this car is the next generation, US hasn't gotten it yet..
  20. Used to work with a guy that drove a 2010 Mazdaspeed 3...rode in a few times, seemed like a nice little car.
  21. Don't compact luxury sedans always outsell the midsize ones? Compact ones are cheaper....3-series vs 5-series, C-class vs E-class, etc.
  22. Off road: Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk (US) Daily: Citroen DS3 (France) Street fun: Mazda Miata (Japan) Track fun: Ariel Atom (UK) family: Maserati Levante (Italy) cruiser: Mercedes-Benz CLS (Germany)
  23. The way I understood it was to think of each category as your only DD...so you favorite choice in each category.
  24. Aren't all full size sedan sales down, even luxury sedans? CUVs/SUVs are killing the sedan market..
  25. Evolutionary styling...why mess with success..they have a formula that works. Clean, serious cars for adults. It's the stuff for kids like Civics that have to go wildly different each generation.. or look at Lexus--how silly and derivative the new LS looks.
