I enjoyed my trip to Downtown Phoenix and Scottsdale last November 29 through December 2 mainly because of the vehicles I got to see still as daily drivers (the car show in Scottsdale was fantastic). There were so many "classic" cars and trucks being driven around as daily's that I never see here in the Northeast except for car shows. Truly a wonderful addition to my work trip. The owner of a local boutique furniture store that I've bought a couple pieces from drives a '59 Chrysler Imperial 2dt ht, a Saab Sonnet hatchback, and a '70s Saab 99 Turbo, all in similar faded red colors...saw the Imperial in traffic twice this week going home....it's a hoot to see that giant beast next to a Prius at a traffic light.
  2. Boy racer hooligans...Fast and Furious fans...got them here too. Most the Neons I see are of the worn out, faded paint but still on the road variety..
  3. Yeah, rust isn't a problem here...we get paint fade/oxidation from the sun and cracked interior plastics from the heat, but there are still lots of 10-25 yr old cars on the road out here... I see some rather obscure older cars pretty frequently out and about in my neighborhood....'70s Lancia Beta coupe, '90s Alfa Romeo 164, Merkur Scorpio, and an '80-81 Chrysler Newport (a car that I've only seen one of in probably the last 25 years).
  4. I still see those fairly frequently, but w/ a large student population, VWs are popular in and around Tempe where I work.... one of my coworkers has a Mk3 Jetta, around a '97 in good shape. I saw 2 MK2 Jettas in the last week, one a faded orange-red and one a dark gold that was popular back in the day IIRC..

  6. Needs more/better sound deadening materials in/around the engine compartment, I would think. I drove a rental '12 Impala last year w/ the 3.6, didn't really notice much difference from previous Impalas I'd rented other than it seemed quicker...but I had the AC on and stereo up..
  7. The Lancer is the only car they have now in the US, besides the low-volume i-MiEV.

  9. RWD would be a nice market differentiator, and a smaller RWD platform has been rumored for the SRT Cuda if that happens.
  10. Fuelly looks interesting..going to give it a try---though I've never been bored enough to track my fuel economy. My own experience w/ diesels also seems that they were underrated as far as the EPA estimates.
  11. It is going to be interesting to see if BMW & MB will still have V8s in the next generation of their midsize sedans in non-performance branded (e.g. M or AMG) versions. Audi doesn't have one, nor does Lexus. (though w/ Audi, this output level is comparable to their current S6).
  12. Actually, with >400 HP and >400 lb-ft, this new engine is aimed squarely at the 550i (400, 450, 15/22-23 mpg), the E550 (402, 443, 16/26 mpg), and the S6 (420, 406, 17/27). Biggest difference is that the Germans have forced-induction V8s, and the CTS will have a V6TT that pretty much matches everyone in power and FE. The LLT is still the 535i/E350/A6 3.0T competitor. I suppose you could look at it that way...and GM went w/ the TT V6 because they don't have a DOHC V8 available.
  13. consumer reports is not neutral. More neutral than anything the automakers put out in their advertising.
  14. Automakers have always gamed the system wrt to gas mileage ratings. I guess if one were comparing cars they would need to consult a neutral source like Consumer Reports.
  15. This seems more of a regular rich person car...the uber rich will go for a Bentley and the mega rich will go for a Roller.. I like your thinking! Lots of different price points in the premium segment.. The S-class, A8, 7 series, XJ seem rather down to earth compared to the Bentley and Roller..
  16. As well as elsewhere. Yes..MB already has a diesel E class here, I would assume a diesel A6 and 5-series will be here eventually...

  20. That's true, of course. If a bit beside the point I'm making here. The point you are making has no point. The only point is how this engine competes w/ equivalent engines from the market competitors.
  21. What is ultimately going to count is how will the new CTS w/ this engine compare in real-world tests with the equivalent models from the German trio--all of which will be TT 6 cylinders? No V8 in that comparison.
  22. This is clearly targeting the BMW 535i. The V-series will target the M5. Same w/ the equivalent E-class/AMG models, and Audi A6/S6.

This combination runs to 60 MPH in 4.6 seconds, a top speed of 170 MPH The fuel econ numbers will likely be class competitive w/ similar models from the German trio... this isn't an engine for a Malibu...premium market buyers aren't as hung up on fuel economy numbers as economy car buyers are. Please stop asking if I read it. I gave it its due on power - the engine has it in spades. What it doesn't have is a justification for its lousy MPG numbers in a new , lighter architecture and with all of its tech. The gas mileage numbers seem more than adequate. it's not a diesel.
