  1. Fiat's performance arm, Abarth, looks to be working their magic on the Fiat 500X. Motor Trend got their hands on some new spy shots of a 500X mule sporting some interesting hardware. First off, the 500X is riding on some very unique wheels. If you're wondering why they look familiar, this same wheel design has been used on various Alfa Romeo models. Behind the wheels are a set of red-painted calipers and larger discs. The big giveaway is around back where there are two exhaust tips. As we reported last summer, the 500X could get the turbocharged 1.7L four-cylinder from the Alfa Romeo 4C. It is unclear if it will retain the 237 horsepower rating found in the 4C or be slightly detuned. All-wheel drive is expected to be standard. Abarth will also make tweaks to the chassis and suspension. No word as to when Fiat will revealed the 500X Abarth. Source: Motor Trend
  2. Last month, we reported that Ford is currently testing a diesel engine for the F-150. Pictures at the time showed a unique exhaust tip (a Venturi exhaust tip that serves a cooler for after treatment systems) and the photographer mentioned hearing the distinctive clatter of a diesel engine. But pictures can only tell so much. Wouldn't it be nice if we had audio or video evidence? Guess what? AutoGuide got a video from a spy photographer who was following an F-150 mule out on the public. The video provides audible evidence that a diesel engine is under the hood. As we reported last month, the engine in question is a turbocharged 3.0L V6 that is under the hood of the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport Td6. Power is rated at 254 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque. AutoGuide speculates that the diesel could be paired with a new ten-speed automatic. The diesel engine is expected to join the F-150 sometime next year. Source: AutoGuide.com
  3. Mazda has another crossover waiting in the wings as two sets of spy shots from China show us. This new crossover's name is currently being debated by various websites as to call it the CX-4, CX-6, or CX-7. What we can tell you is this CX crossover looks to be a production version of the Mazda Koeru concept shown in Frankfurt last year. Comparing the various spy shots to pictures of the Koeru concept reveal Mazda has kept a lot of the concept's design for the production model. Such details as the front end that is similar to the CX-3 and CX-5 to the sharply raked rear end are present. Inside looks like every other Mazda with the same center stack design and control knob behind the transmission lever. CarNewsChina reports the Chinese-market version will get the choice of either a 2.0L or 2.5L four-cylinder. Expect similar options if this new CX comes to the U.S. As for when we'll see it, reports say either the Geneva Motor Show in March or the Beijing Auto Show in April. 4. We're sure Ford would like to have kept their 2017 Fusion refresh a secret till next Monday where it debut at the Detroit Auto Show. But two different spy photographers have caught the 2017 Fusion with no camouflage. The front gets a new oval-ish grille shape with a mesh insert and reshaped headlights. There is also a more aggressive air intake in the center of the bumper. Around back is are a set of reshaped taillights. Sadly, we don't have any shots of what the interior will look like, but we expect Ford's SYNC 3 to play a big role. One item that is still up the air is whether or not there will be a performance oriented Fusion ST that we first saw back in September. We'll learn more about the 2017 Fusion when it debuts on January 11th. In the meantime, you can follow all 2016 Detroit Auto Show news here. Source: Autoblog, Motor Trend
  5. Hyundai has given us a teaser sketch of their upcoming Ioniq - the hybrid/plug-in hybrid/electric model. But Autoblog got their hands on some new spy shots that give us our best look at the final product. The Ioniq's front end follows the same design as seen on the Tucson with a hexgonal grille and slim headlights. The side features a roofline that is similar to the Chevrolet Volt and Toyota Prius. Around back is a high decklid. Hyundai will show the Ioniq in South Korea next month. From there, it will hit Geneva and the New York auto shows. Source: Autoblog
  6. Ford is looking to cover a number of bases when it comes to F-150. They have their EcoBoost engines and we know a hybrid is coming in 2020. But there could be a diesel engine as well. New spy shots show a mostly standard F-150 with a camouflaged bed and an interesting exhaust tip. The spy photographer also noticed the distinct sound of a diesel engine, thus leading to the conclusion that Ford is considering a diesel option. But what engine? Your first guess might be the 3.2 PowerStoke five-cylinder diesel engine, but according Left Lane News, it's a 3.0L turbodiesel V6 codenamed Lion. This engine is actually the same one you'll find under the hood of the upcoming Range Rover and Range Rover Sport Td6. Power for those models is rated at 254 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque. Now Left Lane says we could see this introduced in the second half of 2016. We'll be watching. Source: Left Lane News
  7. Another vehicle has been revealed earlier than expected. This time, it is the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt which was caught during a photo shoot. The styling for the production model retains the basic shape of the concept. Up front is the clip from Volt and the rear end reminds us of the BMW i3. As we reported in a previous Bolt spying piece, the interior will look similar to the Volt's. But we think the Bolt will have a larger touchscreen. Now the Bolt will make its official debut next month at the Consumers Electronic Show in Las Vegas. Production will begin sometime late in 2016 at GM's Lake Orion plant. 8. It seems just a few weeks ago that we brought you spy shots of the upcoming Infiniti Q60 Coupe fully camouflaged and somehow being able to pull some key items. Well today, a fresh set of Q60 Coupe spy shots have come in and there's no camouflage to hide it. Judging from the pictures, it seems Infiniti was doing a promotional photo and/or video shoot out in the desert for the new model. The production model retains a number of items seen on the concept such as the large Infiniti grille, long front end, sculpted side profile, and similar rear end styling. As we surmised in our previous report, the F1 inspired front bumper on the concept is nowhere on the production Q60. We can also confirm the existence of a turbocharged 3.0L V6 via an emblem on the front fender. It is expected that the V6 will produce 400 horsepower. There will also be a turbocharged 2.0L four from Mercedes-Benz as the base engine. It's expected that Infiniti will unveil the Q60 Coupe at Detroit Auto Show in January. Source: Autoblog, Left Lane News
  9. Next at the LA Auto Show, Honda will unveil the coupe version of the Civic. But thanks to an eagle-eye spy photographer, we have our first peek at what the production coupe will look like. While the Civic coupe in the photo has the same bright green color as the concept shown at the New York Auto Show earlier this year, the production model is toned down a bit with no rear wing or distinctive front bumper. But the basic shape is all there. It's expected the Civic coupe will feature the same 2.0L four-cylinder engine with 158 horsepower and turbocharged 1.5L four-cylinder engine with 174 horsepower as found in the sedan. We'll have full details of the coupe when it is shown at the LA Auto Show next week. Source: Motor Authority
  10. When we first laid eyes on the Infiniti Q60 Coupe concept at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this year, we had to admit it was a very stylish coupe. Infiniti said a production version would be arriving sometime next year, Since then, we haven't heard much about the new coupe. But a new set of spy shots gives us an idea of what Infiniti has in store for the production model. Comparing the spy shots with pictures of the Q60 concept show that Infiniti will be keeping some elements from the concept for the production model. The front end will retain the headlights and large grille while the F1 inspired bumper is out. Around back, the short decklid with an upswept lid and taillights will make it into production. Powertrains are still unknown at this time. Rumor has it that a turbocharged 2.0L four from Mercedes-Benz will be the volume engine, while a twin-turbo 3.0L V6 will be available. Source: Autoblog
  11. It might look the same, but there are big changes coming for the next-generation GMC Acadia Car and Driver got their hands on a set of spy shots showing off the next-generation GMC Acadia crossover. This is an important model for GMC as it currently is the third best-selling model in the lineup with more than 80,000 Acadias sold in the past couple of years. So what do the pictures reveal? It seems GMC isn't changing the basic design of the Acadia's exterior. But the interior shows some drastic changes. The dashboard looks similar to the one used on the Canyon with a compressed centerstack and a large screen with GMC's Intellilink. The new Acadia along with its sister models, the Buick Enclave and Chevrolet Traverse, will use a new GM platform called C1XX or “Chi” platform. This platform will incorporate a number of weight-saving features, hopefully solving one of the biggest problems with GM's large crossovers; being a bit too heavy. Power will come from a newer version of the 3.6L V6 with over 300 horsepower. There is also talk of a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder. Transmissions will include a six and an eight-speed automatic. 12. The next-generation Chrysler Town and Country has been kept under wraps for most part. That was until earlier this week when The Windsor Star was somehow able to get shots of the next-generation van as it was being loaded into a transport truck at the Windsor Assembly line. From the couple of shots published, we can tell that the next-generation van will be using design from the 700C shown at the Detroit Auto Show in 2012. The front looks to have a similar shape the 200 sedan, while parts of the side match up to the 700C concept. Its expected that we'll be seeing the production version of the Town and Country at the Detroit Auto Show. Source: The Windsor Star
  13. Chevrolet is hard at work on getting the Bolt EV from the concept we first saw at the Detroit Auto Show to go into production for 2017. Yesterday saw the first spy shots of the Bolt's interior come into focus. The most noticeable feature is a large LCD screen which appears to be running a new version of Chevrolet's MyLink infotainment system. Controls for audio and HVAC are right underneath the screen. There's also another LCD in the gauge cluster which appears to have a similar layout as the Volt. Source: Autoblog
  14. The times we have seen the upcoming Fiat 124 Spider in spy photos, they have been under many layers of camouflage. But a new set of shots have come in, showing off the new spider completely uncovered. Now as we have previously reported, the Fiat 124 Spider is based on the new Mazda Miata and you can see some it in the 124 Spider's overall profile. Fiat has made some changes to make it their own with longer and squarer front end. The back is also square-ish and slightly taller than the Miata. The interior is mostly Miata, aside from the Fiat steering wheel. Powertrains for the 124 Spider are expected to a be a turbocharged 1.4L four-cylinder with 180 horsepower and a 1.75L turbo four-cylinder with 240 horsepower for the Abarth. We're expecting to see the Fiat 124 Spider at the LA Auto Show in November, with sales beginning sometime next year. Source: Auto Guide
  15. Whenever spy photos of the upcoming Maserati Levante are shown, they tend to be of a high-riding Ghibli mule. This week, a new set of spy shots of the Levante has been released and gives a glimpse of what's in store. Now we can't tell much in terms of design since Maserati has put about seven layers of camouflage on this mule. But the overall profile seems somewhat familiar to the Kubang concept from a few years back. Powertrains are expected to the twin-turbocharged V6 and V8 engines from the Ghibli and Quattroporte. The Levante is expected to debut next year at the Geneva Motor Show. Source: Autoblog, Motor Authority
  16. It appears Ford's performance arm is taking a crack at building a high-performance Fusion. A fresh set of spy shots show off a Fusion mule with some interesting hardware. There is are larger brake discs, bigger wheels and tires, quad exhaust pipes, and some body changes hidden in camo. Automobile reports that the sportier Fusion will pack the 2.7L EcoBoost four-cylinder with 300 horsepower. A six-speed automatic will route all the power to all four wheels. These pictures come at an interesting time for Ford. As we've reported, the fate of the Ford Taurus is unknown for the U.S. By building a sporty Fusion, it gives Ford a sporty sedan to take the place of the Taurus SHO. Automobile does go on say that it's unknown whether this is an engineering exercise or a precursor to a production model. If it's the latter, we could see it as 2017 - the year where Ford will give the Fusion a refresh. Source: Automobile Pic Credit: William Maley
  17. While the spotlight at Volvo has been on the new XC90, the Swedish automaker is readying an encore with the replacement for the S80 flagship, the S90. A spy photographer caught a heavily camouflaged S90 mule undergoing some testing this week. While we can't make out all of the styling cues that the S90 will feature, there are a couple of key items we can. First, Volvo looks to giving the S90 a broad grille that first debuted on the XC90. Also, the front headlights appear to have a set of LEDs running across the middle. Rumors have the S90 taking some design ideas from the recent Concept Estate. Volvo will be using their Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform for the S90. Power will likely include the turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder with 316 horsepower (T6) and the plug-in hybrid T8. The S90 is expected to debut sometime later this year. Source: Carscoops
  18. With all the news surrounding Tesla fighters, it seems we have forgotten about the competitors to the Toyota Prius. But luckily Hyundai has been working on such a vehicle to take on the Prius. A fresh set of spy shots have come in of their Prius fighter this week. Now the shots show Hyundai taking some design ideas from the current Prius in terms of exterior styling. We also have the first shots of the interior which boasts a different gauge cluster complete with Eco/Power gauge. Autoblog says recent rumors have Hyundai's new hybrid being based on the next-generation Elantra and use a medium-sized lithium-polymer battery pack that could offer 38 miles of electric power. The gas engine will possibly be a 1.6L four-cylinder. But there is another twist to this story. A source tells Green Car Reports that Hyundai will offer a electric-only version of their Prius fighter sometime after the regular model is launched. A Hyundai spokesman declined to comment on the rumor. Source: Autoblog, Green Car Reports
  19. The next-generation Opel Insignia has been caught for the first time as it ventures out into the real world. We only tell so much from the spy shots since Opel has done a decent job of fitting a fair amount of camouflage to the vehicle. But there is one element we can pull out of the shots. It seems Opel has taken a liking to the Audi A7's styling that they are copying the distinctive roofline for the Insignia. Along with the A7 inspired roofline, Opel is adding around four inches to the overall length to better compete with the Skoda Superb - a Volkswagen Passat sized model. Now this brings up an interesting question for the U.S. market. Buick sells the Insignia as the Regal. As Autoblog reports, the next Opel Insignia will only be sold as a five-door and wagon in Europe. Now will this mean Buick will get the five-door or is Opel working a sedan variant? We can't say. Source: Autoblog
  20. The fourth-generation Toyota Prius has made an early debut thanks to spy photographer who caught the vehicle uncovered at a photo shoot. There's a lot of the Mirai hydrogen vehicle in the new Prius' design. Such details include very busy front-end with split opening grille and forked headlights, to a similar side profile and blacked-out C-Pillar. The Prius will be keeping the liftback shape that it has been using since the seconf-generation model. We don't know any details on the next-generation Prius hybrid powertrain, but Green Car Reports says the next Prius will use Toyota's new global modular platform and possibly have all-wheel drive as an option. We'll get our first look at the next-generation Prius next month. Source: Green Car Reports
  21. It seems not a day goes by without someone saying that 'crossovers are the hot thing'. Yes, we are part of this group. Just consider the automakers who are currently selling a subcompact; Chevrolet Trax, Honda HR-V, Jeep Renegade, Mazda CX-3, and Nissan Juke. There is one automaker missing from this list, Toyota. However, the Japanese automaker could be joining in the near future. A spy photographer caught a fully camouflaged Toyota subcompact crossover testing in the deserts of the American southwest. The overall shape seems to inspired from the C-HR concept shown at the Paris Motor show last year. Comparing the two, we can see some similarities such as a long hood and sloping roofline. The subcompact crossover will use a new modular platform and come with a turbocharged four-cylinder with a CVT. No word if a manual transmission will be on offer. One item still up in the air is whether or not this subcompact crossover will be sold as a Toyota or Scion in the U.S. Some believe it could be destined for Scion as some of the photos show a xB following the test mule. Another item that is not known at this time, when we will see the subcompact in production form. Source: Autoblog
  22. The oldest model in Mazda's lineup is the seven-seat CX-9 crossover, but that will be changing in the near future. The first spy shots of the next-generation CX-9 have been caught while undergoing some testing. The photos show the CX-9 looking like a Mazda3 hatch that has been enlarged by 300 percent. Such details as the five-point grille, sculpted body, and flowing rear end are present. If the recent trend of Mazda's interiors is any indication, expect an impressive looking interior with seating up for seven people. In terms of power, rumor has it that the CX-9 will use a turbocharged SkyActiv four-cylinder. We could be seeing the next Mazda CX-9 debut later this year at the LA Auto Show. Source: Automobile, Autoblog
  23. Honda has a big product offensive coming soon and one of those key products is the new Ridgeline. Unlike the old model which had some clever ideas, but never made it on the sales chart, Honda is making more of an effort to make the next Ridgeline more 'truck'. A new set of spy shots show us how more 'truck' the Ridgeline will become. The Ridgeline looks be adapting conventionally shaped crew cab rather than the oddly shaped one from the previous model. The front end looks to have same front end styling as the new Pilot. The Pilot will share its underpinnings with the Ridgeline as well, meaning it will get the 3.5L V6 and all-wheel drive system. A six-speed automatic will be standard transmission, but a nine-speed automatic is in the cards. The Ridgeline is expected to be shown sometime this year, with sales beginning sometime next year. Source: Left Lane News
  24. Car and Driver got their hands on new spy shots showing off an updated Ford Escape that is likely be introduced next year. The Escape looks to getting a new front end that is similar to Edge with a much larger grille and slimmer headlights. The back looks to be also getting some major changes, though Ford has it so well camouflaged we can't tell you much. Car and Driver goes onto say that the Escape will get the Sync3 infotainment system, and no major changes are expected for the powertrain. Source: Car and Driver
  25. The Mazda CX-5 is now the oldest crossover in their lineup. But Mazda has some big plans for the next-generation model. A spy photographer caught a CX-5 mule filling up at a California gas station. The mule was heavily camouflaged, but we're able to pull some key details about the design. The first is that the CX-5 will be taking some design ideas from the larger CX-9. For example, the front end features narrower headlights and a more pronounced grille surround. The back of the roof also appears to have a sharper slant. We wouldn't be surprised if Mazda brings some premium materials and design to the CX-5's interior, along with more advanced driver assistance systems. One item up in the air is what will power the CX-5? Will they carry over the 2.0 and 2.5L four-cylinder engines? We would expect front-wheel and all-wheel drive to be on offer. Mazda could show the next-generation CX-5 later this year at the LA Auto Show/ Source: Left Lane News, Motor1.com
