William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com February 21, 2012 The Hyundai Elantra has been seeing its sales go up and up; 40% to be exact. But that isn't the only thing to go up. USA Today asked Edmunds.com to analyze transaction prices of compact cars. Their analysis brought forth a surprise. The average transaction price for Elantra in 2011 was $19,711. That's about $1,500 more than for a Toyota Corolla and $300 above a Honda Civic. The same holds true for the mid-size Sonata; average transaction price in 2011 was $23,259. That's about $860 below the Honda Accord and $500 below the Toyota Camry. The previous Sonata was $2,000 below the average price of the A…

Since being exposed on a regular basis to Hyundai cars, something has come to light. The bumper covers are very thin plastic. Where the bumper cover attaches to the car there is a flange with holes that snap into a plastic bracket that is bolted to the fenders and quarter panels. The bumper cover comes to a point in that area... and an automatic car wash tends to grab hold of that point and break the bumper cover away from the car at the thin flange. It is a very common problem, I'm finding... including my cousin's Accent. I saw her over Xmas, and hers is broken. She thought she was responsible for hitting something, but I knew right away what happened. And they ca…

Collaborations between automakers and tech companies are becoming commonplace as self-driving vehicles and a sharing economy are starting to enter the limelight. Doing either one of these alone is difficult and it appears one automaker is realizing this. Bloomberg reports that Hyundai is in talks with Google about a possible partnership. Hyundai Motor President Jeong Jin Haeng said in an interview the two companies share some "common areas that may require cooperation". One of those common areas is autonomous technologies. Both Hyundai and Kia are lagging far behind when it comes to this. It doesn't hurt that former Hyundai USA CEO, John Krafcik heads up Google's auto…

TCC Test: 2007 Hyundai Accent We can recall the days when cheap cars felt all of their description. This opinion is now obsolete thanks to the thoroughly modern and competitive offerings like the Accent SE, Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit, and others. Hyundai takes it a step further: to quell concerns about quality and reliability, it backs the Accent with a five-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty plus a ten-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. Hyundai wants you to compare their Accent to the Yaris, Scion xA, Fit, and Chevrolet Aveo. After researching competitors, add the Chevrolet Cobalt and Ford Focus to that list. All of these cars offer solid transportation valu…

Later this summer, Hyundai will be revealing a new subcompact crossover called the Kona. To prepare us, the company has released some teasers. But thanks to some magic from Photoshop, we have a good idea of what it will look like. The front end comes with Hyundai's new grille that made its debut on the Sonata and a similar headlight arrangement like the Jeep Cherokee. There is also a little slit above the grille. Other design details on the Kona include black body cladding, significant sculpting on the doors, and a partly blacked-out rear pillar. We don't any mechanical details, but we're assuming it will be based on the redesigned Accent. Source: Hyundai Pr…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com January 26, 2012 Hyundai hasn't applied their magic to all of their crossover lineup; Santa Fe and Veracruz, but that will be changing. Two images of what is belived to be the new Santa Fe have hit the web before it's offical unveiling at April's New York Auto Show. The pictures show the new Santa Fe gets a new trapezoidal grille and tapered-back headlight design across its lineup, giving the vehicle a more recognizable look. The back end of the new Santa Fe gives the impression of the Audi Q7. Powertrains for the new Santa Fe are unknown, but a V6 and Turbo-4 are being rumored. Source: Hyundai-Blog.com View f…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com February 20, 2012 Earlier this month we reported that Hyundai was considering doing a sub-brand for their upscale models. Dave Zuchowski, executive vice president of sales for Hyundai Motor America told Automotive News the brand was talking about it. “There's a conversation going on within the company that says, Does having the Hyundai badge on the premium vehicles sell more vehicles, or does it restrict us from selling more vehicles?” said Zuchowski. However, Hyundai Motor America’s CEO John Krafcik they are no plans in place to do a Genesis sub-brand. “We have no plan to change our Equus and Genesis retail approac…

Hyundai is looking towards more turbocharging for their engines. Speaking at Hyundai’s product preview and engineering tech session, powertrain boss John Juriga said a turbocharged version of the company’s 3.8-liter V6 (offered in both the Genesis coupe and sedan) is a possibility for the future. “The 3.8 is a contender for turbocharging for some high-output applications.” Juriga went on to say that such an engine already exists and is undergoing testing. However, speaking with AutoGuide, Jurega said that the Hyundai engineering team is constantly exploring new engine options and that the existence of a prototype is no guarantee that such an engine will make it into pro…

Troubled Seoul: Probe Could Crimp Hyundai and Kia Expansion Plans Date posted: 04-25-2006 SEOUL — An investigation into an alleged slush fund in Korea could curtail ambitious expansion plans by the country's top automaker, Hyundai Motor, and its Kia subsidiary. Government prosecutors were scheduled on Monday to interview Hyundai Chairman Chung Mong-Koo in connection with the investigation. Prosecutors last week interviewed Chung's son, Chung Eui-sun, president of Kia Motors. As part of Chung Mong-Koo's vision for Hyundai to become one of the world's top five automakers by 2010, the company is in the midst of an aggressive global expansion, with major new plant constr…

Hyundai has scored a big marketing win with its incentive program that allows owners to return a new Hyundai within a year if they lose their job. Called the Hyundai Assurance program, the South Korean automaker sweetened the deal later by offering to pay up to three months of car payments before taking the car back so that owners would have time to look for a new job. While the rest of the auto industry has been hit with slumping sales in 2009, Hyundai sales were up in January and about even in February compared with 2008. Some of that certainly has to do with the peace of mind provided by the Hyundai Assurance program. But an incentive program isn't successful just be…

Automotive News is reporting that internal sources have indicated that Hyundai will not develop a new generation of the Sonata once the current model run has complete. Similar reports regarding the fate of the Kia K5, the replacement for the Kia Optima, seem to confirm this as both vehicle share a common platform. The current Sonata went on sale in 2019 as a 2020 model while the K5 started production in 2019 in overseas markets and went on sale in the U.S. as a 2021 model. Sales of both sedans has dropped dramatically with the Sonata reaching a peak of around 230,000 U.S, sales in 2012 and the K5/Optima reaching almost 160,000 U.S. sales in 2015. Sales were around 93,…

SEOUL, South Korea — Underscoring that it plans to field one of the most fuel-efficient fleets in the business, Hyundai on Wednesday confirmed that it expects to reach America's new fuel economy standard of 35 miles per gallon by 2015. That means the Korean automaker would hit the goal five years before compliance is required. "We believe we have the engineering resources and the confidence to reach our target by 2015," said Hyun-Soon Lee, president of the Hyundai-Kia corporate research and development division, in a statement released on Wednesday. Electric cars have great acceleration, but they can seem dull to drive. Hyundai didn't get that memo when creating the 640-horsepower Ioniq 5 N. They tout that the Ioniq 5 N is truly fun and a "corner rascal". Piloting the Ioniq 5 N at the Nürburgring was Sport Auto's test driver, Christian Gebhardt. Gebhardt has driven both the Ioniq 5 N and last-generation BMW M2 CS. The Ioniq 5 N completed a time of 7 minutes and 49.59 seconds, only 2.6 seconds slower than the BMW. Back in 2020, Gebhardt completed a time of the Nordschleife in 7 minutes and 42.99 seconds. Hyundai used Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires, while the last-generation M2 CS had Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2s. Wi…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com January 31, 2012 The Hyundai Elantra has been a success for the Korean brand, seeing a 41% sales increase this past year. The Elantra also picked up the North American Car of the Year in January, and the icing on the cake will be a new coupe and five-door joing the Elantra. However, all isn’t well for the Elantra according to a report to Bloomberg. Hyundai says they’ve hit their production capacity at the the company's Montgomery, Alabama plant. Last year, the plant churned out 338,000 vehicles, 10% above the plant’s capacity. About 55% of those vehicles built were new Elantras. “The growth will be capped only becaus…

During the 2021 Los Angeles Auto Show, Hyundai displayed their SEVEN concept, a highly futuristic three-row EV roughly the size of the company's Palisade. It was assumed at the time that when this vehicle came to market in production form, it would wear the Ioniq 7 nameplate. A recent report to Automotive News (subscription required) has said that the name will now change to Ioniq 9 to better align with Kia's EV9 SUV and also give space below for additional Ioniq models to come. Hyundai is busy making Ioniq into its own brand, with several vehicles planned in the coming years, including some Hyundai Ioniq trucks. The Ioniq 9 is expected to break cover in June this …

New York - "Bigger, Better, Further" is the tagline for the 2026 Hyundai Palisade, released this morning at the New York International Auto Show. Hyundai's biggest SUV boasts a longer wheelbase, shorter overhangs, a new engine lineup, and more ambitious off-road trim. The 2026 Palisade's bold new design take the prior model's premium look even further upmarket. Standing up tall and proud up front is a grille and fascia that would be at home on luxury brands significantly more expensive. The same upscale look is continued in a handsome side profile that is reminiscent of luxury competitors with two words in their name. In spite of this upright and boxy look, Hyundai…

First a bit of history for those that might not know much about the art of Drifting. This is a motor sport that was born in Japan by Keiichi Tsuchiya, the man known as Drift King. The movie Fast n Furious Tokyo Drift covers this if you're wanting to see some amazing drifting caught on film. Hyundai Motors has given us an amazing performance EV in the IONIQ 5 N edition and Hyundai choose to take this to the next level by bringing in the DK himself. At the 2026 New York International Auto Show, Hyundai made an appearance nobody had on their bingo card: the Boulder Concept, a body-on-frame SUV design study confirming the brand's intent to enter the midsize pickup truck segment. Hyundai CEO José Muñoz stated at the reveal that a production midsize pickup is targeted for delivery by 2030, representing just one of 36 new Hyundai vehicles planned for North America by that date. The move into body-on-frame is a significant step for Hyundai. The midsize truck segment, dominated by the Ford Ranger, Toyota Tacoma, and Chevrolet Colorado, has been one of the few areas where the brand had no competitive answer. The Boulder…
