Worth The Investment?

51 posts in this topic

This is the '76 Monte Carlo my dad is considering to buy. The car is totally rust-free and only needs some mild interior work. The cost is four grand, but my dad says the owner seems to be flexible on the price up to one grand.

Well, I think my dad would like the challenge. And I know I'm most certainly up to it. There is no challenge too great for the likes of myself. :AH-HA_wink:

They do have strong family ties (unlike that bastard two-door W-Body of the same name).

DAMN LUMINA/IMPALA COUPE! *shakes fist*

Speaking of the second-generation Impalumina coupe, has anyone ever noticed that the headlights are in the shape of bloated, jellybean bowties?

looks good, hope you can make a deal for it

I'm going to see if dad will go back tomorrow and take it for another test drive. I think that could persuade him to start some negotiations. :AH-HA_wink:

it took me until that model stopped rolling off the lines.. like 2 years ago my old neighbor had one, and i was looking at and said... "hmmph... that headlight looks like a melted bowtie!"

You are welcome!

If your Dad does purchase that '76 MC, I can give you a few links to groups, too ;).

Yes, indeed. In fact ... the '81 and '76 MCs are "opposites", in a way.

The '76 headlights are verticle; the '81 headlights are horizontal.

The reflectors in the '76 taillights is horizontal; the reflectors in the '81 taillights are verticle.

Interesting, eh?

And, yes, I had noticed that about those headlights....

*sighs*

Looks worth it to me, the exterior is super clean...which is really the most important part. Cloth/vinyl/leather are much easier to replace than rust holes.

Hmmm! I had never notice that before. That is quite interesting. 8)

You know, I have always found the styling of the second-generation Montes the most graceful. The fenders are bold and suggest power but are elegant and flowing at the same time.

And, yes, I had noticed that about those headlights....

I think it's even more apparent on the concept version.

It is a shame that GM didn't build that concept as is, rear-drive and all.

that's the easiest thing to set it apart from all other cars at night. can tell it's a MC coming up behind/ infront of you.

Indeed. I only noticed it because Mom and Dad had a '76 and an '81 for a while; now, I have their '81 and my own '76 :).

Indeedy. THEN it would've been a Monte Carlo ;).

My Dad used to have an Impala that exact same color, so I'm going to have to say go for it, as long as there are no underlying issues like bondo, collision damage or drivability problems.

As far as he could tell, there is no bondo or collision damage done to the car. As for drivabilty, he tells me that it does have one problem concerning that: it hauls way too much ass. :smilewide: :AH-HA_wink:

I expect it!

And I will promise to deliver. :AH-HA_wink:

And they are very sharp rides. I wish the MC dad is thinking about was black like your '76. That would only push me to make him buy it that much more. :P

I'll happily take it off your hands for a package of chewed Juicy Fruit.

Edit: And as for the Monte, I'd say go for it! It's definitely a looker.

Update: We have had a busy evening today, so our father-son test drive had to be postponed until tomorrow afternoon. I think that another look at the car will convince him to negotiate with the seller a bit and take it from there.

This pic worries me a bit:

SANY0588.jpg

That looks to be some rust near the lower corner on the door. It's probably only surface rust given the condition of the rest of the car, but really look it over. Check the underside of the doors, inside the trunk, all behind the back glass - all the typcal water drainage points. I'm not saying don't get it, but anythig you find, you can use as ammo to get him to knock the price down

The interior is, well, quite a piece of work. The dash is the worst part as it looks like he went a little crazy with the green paint, and it has the typical cracks. If you get the car, I'd love to know how you end up fixing the dash.

I don't know Z, that looks like a factory dash color to me.

The exterior makes it worth the price, or close to it.

I wouldn't be surprised about the dash pad, but what about the plastic piece surrounding the auxiliary gages? I thought that was black, like in my fathers/grandfather's '73 MC

Actually, it should be. But, that green is a factory color - maybe out of a Chevelle?

Or an assembly line error?

Something odd there. :scratchchin:

Those a/c vents are chrome too - should be black in an M/C panel.

And the woodgraining looks like the Chevelle version too.
