I'm going to be working from home more and relying on our parents a lot (we are lucky that they are available and willing), our schools are closed for the next three weeks (one was planned March Break, the rest tacked on). Funny my son's class got an "assignment" last week regarding them documenting the fun things they got up to during March Break, going to be a heck of a lot of "stayed home and played with lego" etc instead of "Went to Europe/Hawaii/The Rockies" etc3 points

I know he is still around, he commented on my work anniversary for Cheers & Gears about a month ago, along with commenting on something on my Facebook around the same time. Need to reach out to him soon to find out if he'll be coming to Detroit for the autoshow during the summer.3 points

It kind of is. GM has withdrawn from many markets, cut most of their sedan models and continues to lose market share. Other than NA trucks and full size SUVs, they have no market leadership or dominant products. It’s time to go big for the future or go home.2 points

YAWN, just stating some obvious facts with nothing of substance to discuss or cover why the changes and why it could not make a profit. Fair points are brought up in this story and yet why post it here rather than the Random Thread where it is probably more inline with random discussion. They briefly mention GM was developing EVs before Musk was born, but the focus of the story was on their down sizing. Fair question to ask is can Mary as she makes GM a very profitable company turn it around and into a growth company with their upcoming EV platform auto's? That would then be fair game for here to discuss. I honestly think Mary is looking at the long game of changing GM from a Global ICE company to a Global EV company and has sold off the parts that would drag the company down as they move to re-invent themselves. Thank you for posting Blu, appreciate the read.2 points

I can see this as pushing more companies to move away from the desktop and into laptops with docking stations. Dell Tech internally only issues laptops with docking stations to all employees. Only under special circumstance with mgmt. approval can you get a desktop.2 points

wiki says the MBAMGGTS63 is 4340-4500 lbs. But I agree : mercedees are all too fat. Of course- Nurburgring is 'water cooler talk' - akin to fantasy football. But I'd certainly wait to see what the higher-up C8s bring if it's important to you. You don't seriously think the Corvette team is done at 495 HP, do you??1 point

There are those resto jobs that truly are a labor of love. I am thinking of auto's that have been in a family for generations and are not special enough to have a ton of value but they restore it as a connection to great grandpa X or Great Grandma Y. I have seen those projects and while the auto is amazing, one knows that the money spent on restoring it will never be recovered, just the memories and connection to the past for the family.1 point
-
^ Of course that's not true ("never"). Plenty of collector cars out there that were restored to factory correct and were worth more than was put into them. The 2 biggest ticket items are rot repair, and missing a LOT of extremely rare parts. So a mostly complete, western car with little rot is not much more expensive to restore than a commonplace one of the same era. But some of them are worth a LOT. Think Chevelle 300 vs. Chevelle SS- along the same lines of resto costs, but enormous value for the right SS.1 point
-
Most of the time, any car that needs restoration, a PROPER frame-up restoration repairing ALL rust and holes and doing the project right without any cutting of corners and all that is NEVER a financial prudent decision. BUT... One should do it NOT for the money, but for the love of the automobile.1 point

A fender is something that fends things off. In this case, splash. In the case of that Cadillac, I would bet the quarter panels are more than one quarter of the lemf of the car.1 point

For someone creative, it could be the basis of an interesting resto mod. Mount the body shell on an Escalade chassis, keep the Escalade drivetrain and front clip...1 point

Uh this is a GM thread and it is pertinent to the conversation. Some have called this EV boondoggle a "HAIL MARY" in an attempt to regain lost relevance. Idiom: “To throw a Hail Mary” ... A Hail Mary pass or Hail Mary route in American football refers to any very long forward pass made in desperation with only a small chance of success, especially at or near the end of a half.1 point

The time for the 2018 MBAMGGTS63 was 7.25.41. It has 630 HP - it's the very top powertrain in the model line. The time for the 2020 Corvette (base) was 7.29.90. It has 495 HP - it's the very bottom powertrain in the model line. For contrast, the C7 Z06 did the 'Ring in 7.13.90.1 point

^ You mean the front fenders? Sure- you can find them. It certainly doesn't look to far gone to restore, the question is; is it financially prudent to do so?1 point

Close: GM should sell an Equinox EV Premier at a price close to the LT (or better still an LS trim level).1 point

Not much better here: both Sam's and Costco have no TP or paper towels. Wal-Mart had some but it is limited. NO rubbing alcohol at all though. Disinfecting wipes are hard to find too. Same with gels to a lesser degree.1 point

This is the real issue for GM. Toyota did not have the 70s and 80s and 90s be a total cluster***k like GM did. Tesla never went through BK like GM did. GM needs to convince everyone born after 1980 that they have the best vehicles (especially EVs) bar none. Now there will be a struggle (CR dislikes most things GM going back about 50 years or so), but it must be done where it matters: The Equinox EV and its smaller and larger brethren must be better than Toyota and Tesla (and a better value!), otherwise GM is woefully screwed for the next generation or two.1 point

Here school districts are planning meals still to insure kids get breakfast and lunch. Those that can walk to the school to pick up a sack meal can and they said some will be delivered. Interesting to see how this all plays out.1 point

While it is going to be a problem for many people I think closing schools and public places is a good thing. It is the best way to prevent spreading of the virus. Sometimes the right decision is the tough one. Actually, I think they should have started closings earlier.1 point

It's going to be a lot of not good for a lot of people, I'm afraid.. it seems like a lot of quick, panicky decisions, not well thought out.1 point

Under the cargo floor? That's in a ton of vehicles. Maybe GM did the first but it certainly isn't exclusive to them.1 point

It's a good listen, right? It's good to hear the information stated in a conversation back and forth rather than some news outlet speaking TO us. It just feels more genuine and like I can believe it more. I know it shouldn't make a difference, but it makes it all feel more real as news outlets purposefully go for "clicks" or "views" with dramatic statements or headlines.1 point

I tend to believe and trust the top doctors in the U.S.A. myself and they're saying wash your hands with soap for 20+ secs. is one of the best way to fight it. Creepy as it sounds, the little invisible bugs get in your mucus membranes if you touch your eyes, nose or mouth when your hands are dirty with bacteria and viruses. That's one Fugly Ford! ?1 point

Wash hands in hot soapy water for 20 secs or more several times a day, cover cough with inside of elbow and don't touch your eyes, nose or mouth before you wash up. Common sense and good daily hygiene goes a long ways, something I've always followed. Same way to greatly help in preventing the spread of the common cold or seasonal flu. Biggest one is Stay Home when sick.1 point

Show Diesel Brothers just got nailed with an $851,451 dollar fine due to removing or tampering with emissions controls on the Diesel auto's they modified. Plus must pay the doctors group that sued them their $1.2 million legal fees. The Doctors attorneys say this is a step in the right direction to get the Rolling Coal auto's off the road as Utah clamps down on people who polute. Seems this could be another reason the Diesel Brothers show is moving to building EV Trucks. https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1127408_truck-modifiers-behind-diesel-brothers-hit-with-850-000-fine-for-pollution Seems the Cummins Diesel motor recall is even bigger than the VW recall due to polution.1 point

Fastest modified Model S ludicrious mode + Upgrade quarter mile (after waiting an hour to warm the batteries and making sure it was charged to 99%) is 10.4 secs- it barely beat out the C7. When the top engine C8 Corvette debuts, it'll demolish that time. Or would you like to compare the current base C8 to the long range 100 kw trim without ludicrious mode, without Upgrade and without warming the batteries for an hour?? But I welcome your link to the Cadillac's Celestiq performance claims - I hadn't seen that that was released. BTW- at the price tier, the 'premium-class' Model S is many tiers below the future Cadillac flagship (finally we have a new Cadillac flagship!). Model S doesn't compare. Hell, it doesn't compare to a S-Class.1 point

Model S sales in the US peaked some years ago, and have dropped since. Tesla is acutely aware of this, proven by the company otherwise-inexplicably combining model s & X sales number together. Hides the slump. Model S is old-old-old at this point, and the Model X's curfuffle with making the REAR doors 'wing' up was a flop. Daimler is 10 years behind Tesla and still has nothing to offer. Despite them claiming they are hard and work turning over a new leaf, the company is in high investment retreat- the EQS was delayed before it was even unveiled. Firing engineers & designers not a way to combat Tesla. General Motors on the other hand has shown just how serious they are. Right or wrong, agree or disagree, the Corporation is dedicated. Reg is a the-glass-is-half-full, maybe-less, and-I-can-see-it-evaporating-from-here type, ain't he?1 point

Yeah I remember the Tesla 3 having similar preorder numbers yet has not sold near that. It also did not eat into its alleged competition. The Cyber Truck will not sway any serious RAM/Ford/GM owner just because it ugly as hell. Simply the ugliest damn thing on wheels I have ever seen released to the masses and that’s saying something. Your second paragraph doesn’t even merit a response because you choose to focus only on the domestics like Daimler won’t take the same kind of hit.1 point

I've been by the now-closed business this is parked behind for years, never noticed it there until yesterday. Perhaps there was a section of masking fence, now gone. Car appears pretty solid, and I have a weakness for Step-Down Hudsons. The fact that it's a top-line 2-dr hardtop makes it that much more dreamy, and with the business out of there (about a year now), I worry the car will get scraped. Can I, in good conscious & stewardship, allow that?1 point

Cybertruck has over 500,000 orders, where are those coming from? There are only X number of full size truck buyers in the market. People that never bought a truck or never thought of buying a pickup are not all of a sudden going to buy a Cybertruck. I suspect F150, Ram 1500 and Silverado all see a 10-15% drop in sales the year Cybertruck goes on sale. Taycan is faster than a C8 Corvette and it says Porsche on it. The Cadillac won't be faster than a Corvette, because the Corvette has to be the fastest car at GM, so the Celestique won't be faster than a Model S either, since the C8 is slower than a Model S. And interiors have never been a Cadillac strong suit, they haven't had a best in class interior since like 1960 so I can't imagine all of a sudden they come up with a Bentley level interior for this car.-1 points
