I pretty much only like standards, not cruisers and not overdone sports bikes. So that pretty much rules out Harleys. One thing I dislike is the feel and performance of any V-Twin. It hasn't mattered if it's a Harley, Indian, or Kawasaki. They're rough, unrefined, have mediocre performance for their size, and loud. Engines I've liked are the Honda inline-4, the Kawasaki inline twin, and of course the boxer twin. My second choice was the Kawasaki Vulcan S which is sort of a modern take on a sporty cruiser... it's in a weird category in that it looks cruiser-ish, but it also is modern and streamlined. It's also powered by a modified version of the Ninja inline twin. But as I was telling @A Horse With No Name in chat, I decided to aim for exactly what I wanted rather than going for my second choice. The Vulcan S is generally 50% of what the R nine T cost me. I do like R nine T Scrambler the way it is, but I may add a few protective accessories like engine guards and an oil cooler guard. The oil cooler tends to get banged up with road debris. It's supposed to be a sacrificial part, but I'd like to delay the inevitable as long as possible. It is coming with an extra set of mirrors and a small luggage kit, so I could use it to commute to work without having to have a backback on my back the whole way. I may get pricing on what it might cost to have the tank vinyl wrapped.... just because I'm Extra, I might try and get it in a scheme that would match my truck. I already have all the riding gear I need for now, but I might also start looking for a pair of riding sneakers to supplement my riding boots I already own. I have the U-haul reserved, but I'm debating if I will go buy ramps instead and put it in the bed for the trip back.4 points

Reality is complex, if the UK market is remotely like the US, the general public is deeply ignorant of anything technical about their consumer products....probably typical generic 'muppets' that buy a Porsche for the bling factor with no comprehension of it's usability.3 points
-
I just find it funny that the couples basic ignorance and refusal to do just a little research before acquiring a Taycan is not the bigger issue here. Yes, UKs infrastructure needs some work but to be fair, the country wasn’t exactly a bastion for liberal gas consumption (higher costs to fuel there than here for example). After searching through several articles regarding the couple and their car, it seems that they did buy it and understood that they could have charged it at home yet didn’t. Now their blatant ignoring of such a things leads to a nice fodder article for the non-convinced folks but it is pure fodder knowing these simple facts. The slant here is pretty obvious.3 points
-
And that illustrates the problem with the article in general as it doesn’t seem to bring that up at all if indeed that is the case. The whole thing is sensationalized as it stands so I’m just taking that with a grain of salt while wondering why certain facts were omitted from the article.3 points

We shouldnt take away what that couple had to deal with. Which is the CORE problem. A charger network that seems to be wonky. IF the charger network had been decent, then there is NO news to talk about REGARDLESS if the couple charged at home or not. IF the charger system had worked, then the ONLY thing that is stupid here is the stupidness of the couple NOT using the ONE perk of owing an EV properly. Which is the CONVENIENCE of charging an EV vehicle AT home and leaving for your destination with a FULL CHARGE making a destination that much easier without the need to charge up and wait longish times to do so. They didnt. But...it SHOULDNT have MATTERED... HOWEVER... We SHOUDLNT also forget that we SHOULD know what the phoque it is we are BUYING and getting ourselves into when we are buying techno and/or mechanical shyte. We SHOULD know how an automobile works. Even more so an electrical one since its new technology that has been introduced to us.2 points

Yeah. The Parthenon. I just love that building. I found that pic worthy of me to have it displayed. I see where your inspiration to listen to that album came from. The sun beaming through the clouds. Inspiration comes from all kinds of sources and cues. ?2 points

So... before setting out on their trip, they should've plotted their route and gone online to done as much of a 'real-time' analysis of charger outlets along the way being inoperable and the wait times projected at the time they would be there, then continually altered their route to all other possible ones that allowed operable chargers with reasonable wait times, then recorded/taken said optimum route, with the hope that in the interim; said charger scenarios don't change. You're right; they were incompetent.2 points

ElectraMeccanica News Seems this little startup that has been clinging to life support over the past few years has now choosen Mesa Arizona for their new US based assembly facility. According to the story, this little single occupant 3 wheel EV after a year plus long search choose Arizona over it's home HQ base of Canada. They also have opened up 8 current retail locations with plans for a total of 20 direct to consumer locations of which 16 will be in North America for people to look at and pre-order their auto across the US. With a price point of $18,500, 100 mile range and a top speed of 80mph, this could be the perfect Uber Eats or any other service delivery auto. Three things... (1) Hydrogen as a fuel is RETARDED. Hydrogen is not an energy source -- you cannot mine it or grow it. You have to make it from electricity or through cracking hydrocarbons -- the latter being the dominant means of making industrial hydrogen today because it is much cheaper and more energy efficient than electrolysis. Hydrogen is at best an energy storage medium and it sucks at that -- it is either the lowest density gas in the universe or the coldest liquid in the universe. If what you want is to burn it, you should burn something else that is easier and less bulky to carry. If what you want is electricity through a fuel cell, just use batteries and spare yourself the hyper insulated tanks, 6000 psi bomb canisters and/or the bulky PEM fuel cell stack altogether. (2) Hybrids never made economic sense and with electrics of adequate range on the market they won't draw the Green Dollars from Global Warming Coolaid drinkers -- not anymore. From day one through present day, the extra cost of a Hybrid drive train will NEVER pay itself back through fuel savings over the life of the vehicle or the battery system or both. It takes an average of 13.5 years to recoup the marginal cost of a Prius drivetrain over that of a Corolla (@ $4/gallon which is more than most Americans currently pay). This is beyond the ownership period of 95% of Prius buyers and beyond the expected longevity of the NiCAD battery. (3) There is nothing wrong with developing or selling Electric Vehicles. We can all appreciate the NVH refinement of a vibration free propulsion system regardless of whether we believe the Climate Change rubbish. However, Toyota is right. Artificially accelerating Electric Vehicles or trying to move to an all electric fleet when consumers are not demanding, or ready for, it will indeed hurt consumers. If and when Electric vehicles become cheap enough and practical enough, people will naturally buy them. Trying to force it on the People when it is not will absolutely hurt consumers the same way forcing Plasma TVs on everyone when they were $20,000 and lasts 4 years before becoming half as bright will hurt consumers. The same can be said of lofty CAFE standards forcing very expensive and often unreliable implements to save a tiny bit of extra gas when the consumer has other priorities and/or preferences. ......(removed).....2 points

@oldshurst442 as a random aside, I kept looking at the photo in your post footer and thinking it looked familar--appears to be of Athens, but the color and lighting kind of remind me of an album cover of a favorite album of mine, 'Forth' by the Verve. Not really that similar, but it was reminding me I need to listen to that album again...been a while.2 points

As 1 of the top 4 auto corporations by sales, I think toyoter is actually being the most realistic about the near future market. No mass market OEM is going to be 100% electric by 2030, sales are still catastrophically low overall, and toyoter's pace (WRT the reported 2025 BE models) is fine, time-wise, to enter the so-called "party".2 points

Reminds me of how people buy wireless charging pads for their phones and yet cannot seem to understand the basics of EV ownership. If your so lazy about plugging in, then buy one of the wireless charging pads for auto's for home use. Clear slant by a bias ICE person and ignorance about the fact that they should have charged up to full before doing their road trip.2 points

I am not denying that. Probably true. And come to think of it, I kinda know this. What I should have said instead, is user error rather than go on a long, useless tirade. But my opinion stays the same. 1. Not an electric car problem 2. A charging network problem because owner/operators are dumb. Because a non-working charger is not generating revenue... The purpose of a business is to generate...revenue. 3. A non-working charging system is but a small hiccup on the grand scale of things2 points

The more I see what is going on, the more likely I will end up keeping my Equinox. I think I’d have a much better chance buying it, rather than wondering if there will be something, or if I would overpay. I also expect used car prices to jump again too. At least I have a buyout quote at the end- will be much cheaper than buying something else used.. Of course maybe a tiny amount of the stimulus might go toward the down payment as well.. ? Analysts are saying that VW group will be the top EV seller in about 5-10 years from now. Im glad they see a need for them to replicate what Tesla is doing. Its gonna help their image and VW EV ownership that much better for their customers. A way to build brand identity and hence brand loyalty?1 point

So how long will be to pay off price difference between ICE Escape and Mach E? EVs don't make financial sense at the moment either.1 point

I don't think your comparison is relevant. You said Hybrids vs EV and than you compared Corolla to Prius. Here is another comparison: Base Ford Mach E - 230mi range, 255hp, RWD $44k Toyota RAV4 Prime - 42mi EV range, almost 600 mi hybrid range, AWD, 302hp, $39k I know which one I will choose at this point1 point

@Robert Hall @surreal1272 @oldshurst442 Seems Porsche has gotten the message as with a new battery design for all EV's going forward, they have also taken a page from Book of Tesla and have committed the money to build out their own high speed 800V charging network on all major roads across Europe. Oddly it seems UK is not on that list which makes me wonder if Brexit took it's toll here. High-performance batteries with silicon anodes and Porsche fast-charging stations Seems even more in support of this is that VW has committed to 18,000 800V high speed chargers across Europe by 2025 on top of new batteries for VW and Audi and expanded new VW gigafactories. Here are the biggest announcements from Volkswagen’s battery event - The Verge Not the couple, I am talking about the person who wrote the story.1 point

You'd certainly be 1 of 1. Nobody else in the world is wrapping their BMW motorcycle tank to match their 2013 Chevrolet Avalanche. ?1 point

2 problems with that, though the idea sounds amazing. 1. Its a 10+ hour trip non-stop. I haven’t ridden regularly in 20+ years, and only once or twice a year since I got my motorcycle license 4 years ago. I think tackling a trip that long on my first road bike wouldn’t be wise. 2. I won’t have a plate for it until I get it back to PA. I did find the Mototote I wanted at a very good price last night, so I’ll be getting that and canceling the U-Haul. I didn’t want ramps really, I was just looking for an alternative to the U-Haul.1 point

I didnt bother reading all the details. LOL Im glad that you were able to sniff out that detail: I just read the sensationalist title: Why did it take 9 hours to go 130 miles? (a slightly shorter trip that is Quebec City to Montreal, a trip that Ive done countless of times...a trip that should take 2.5-3 hours) and I laughed. So I sped read what could have been the problem and it was a charging issue. I laughed even more. So I just tackled the issue that way. But yeah...a Taycan, like the article states one paragragh in (that I just took the time to actually read it) has a range of 250 miles. Half the distance required. Technically, on a full charge, they should have had enough juice to go and come back... I say technically because we all know there are range losses... But... what is even MORE ridiculous about their "ordeal" is that going to Quebec City and back to Montreal should only be about 5 hours. Their trip is slighty shorty by about 40-50 miles. They took 9 hours. About 4 hours more. About 90-100% more time... The thing is...like you said, if they charged at home...(dont give me no bullshyte that they dont have a charger at home...anywhere on the planet, you have money to buy a brand NEW PORSCHE, ANY brand NEW PORSCHE, and you gots money to own a house with a garage and buying a NEW ELECTRIC PORSCHE, then THAT means you got the money to have a charger installed at your house...you got no money or house and you got NO BUSINESS OWNING such a vehicle...) if they charged at home, then they get to go to their destination NO problem. They WILL eat at their destination, they could find a restaurant with a charger or independent charger whilst driving around as they could actually do that as the Taycan has enough range to do such a thing... they could top off and have more than enough range to get back home no sweat... After typing this, Im starting to think the story is bupkis. Rubbish. A fairytale of King Arthur proportions. PS: My other two posts before this one, I stand by them even more!1 point

Effin' awesome bike! Love the colour combo. The grey tank with the tan leather seat. I was never into speed bikes. Maybe a Hayabusa in the early 2000s. I was not really into Harleys either but the V-Rod (and later Night Rod with any other variant) got my interest. I was always fascinated with that Triumph I mentioned earlier. But Im really not a bike guy. To continue my life story on my interest in bikes anecdotes, a good client of mine at the restaurant (he has since moved on, to a different province...British Columbia) had a Yamaha V Max, hence why I know about it, and I started falling in love with these types of bikes. Half cruisers, half speed bikes , I guess is what they are?! And Im assuming your motorcycle also falls into that category? Anyway, If Im ever to buy a motorcycle, (which is probably never) Id buy something like you have right now. Or a V-Rod/Night Rod, or a Triumph Bonneville or one of those new retro TR6 Trophys) Enjoy it this summer, hopefully we will all be vaccinated by then and you could take a trip up here in Quebec... PS: If you hadnt figured it out yet about me, I would have NEVER guessed what motorcycle you bought.1 point

Update today- have an order # finally, plus a scheduled build week of 3/29-4/4. It’s supposedly a lock to get built. Current restrains are running boards (mine doesn’t have ‘em), and the molded floor liners- but they’ll built it without those. Dealer manager says probably be here last week of April.1 point

True, but then I already have my GMC Suburban for hauling 4x8 sheets or up to 10ft long stuff inside safely. So the Rivian and Hummer still more than meet our needs for a truck for the wife with passenger hauling capabilities. Course another benefits with the EV trucks is the Frunk, that allows such a nice way to store smaller stuff while maximizing the bed for other bigger stuff.1 point
-
I am sure the heavy truck hauling members here will bitch about this mini-truck only having a 5'4" bed since it is 4" longer than the Hummer. ? Course it also does not match up to the Chevrolet Luv truck's bed lengths they had in the 70's. For all the bitching about bed length, I see a ton of empty beds on the road as they have become the new Station wagon of the 21st century. I remember before the pandemic hit, one of the sales guys came into the office and he was talking about how awesome his Raptor is and how much he has enjoyed driving it the last year plus. We went down to check it out and I commented that his bed was so clean and shinny and I remember he said he would never haul anything, but drove it for how high it sat and how it drove and the look. Another truck not being used as a truck. Like you posted and a few others, lots of people are buying trucks but not using them anywhere for what they were originally designed for.1 point
