  1. You know he would never do something so sensible. Moreover, a lot of foreign-made cars sell here because people want to buy them. Not all domestic-branded cars are made in North America (e.g. Buick Envision). Not all foreign-branded cars are made overseas (e.g. BMW X3 and X5) Somebody needs to tell POTUS that this is not 1970 anymore. A lot has changed and baby boomer buying habits did that over the last 45 years.
  2. Those self-driving cars will be ready for primetime soon enough. It may be 2030 but we can all wait for them to be fully ready for the road. Once all the bugs are fully purged and are proven safer than cars under human control, self-driving cars will slowly take over sales and the public imagination.
  3. AWD is NOT fuel efficient at all compared to FWD. Since Subaru has an all-AWD lineup, they will need a cheaper FWD sedan or two sooner rather than later.
  4. EVs comprise 1% of all new car sales, and that is optimistic. Somebody in some lab will probably find a new way to create a battery without cobalt unless multiple new discoveries of cobalt ore are found and mined soon.
  5. A Warning to Jaguar: Buick tried to bring back the Riviera at the end of the 1990s after a two-year hiatus. None have been made since 1999. Let the XK RIP.
  6. Elon Musk overpromised and underdelivered again. Maybe everyone who reserved their Tesla Model 3 should get their money back and simply buy an already available Chevy Bolt. And I mean ALL OF THEM.
  7. Actually, I am surprised that he did not make this decision a lot sooner. Italy is not known for its work ethic, but Central Europe is a better place for FIAT to build ALL of its cars anyway.
  8. If I were the 4300 V6, I would watch out because its replacement has arrived. Now if only such an engine would upgrade/replace all the extant 4cyl engines in all the GM cars and crossovers with a 4cyl (Envision possibly excluded). Yes I know that it has to be made for a FWD setup, but one can dream.
  9. When did Nissan and Mitsubishi form their alliance? As for the midsize truck, it had better be significantly different from whatever Nissan is selling these days.
  10. It is well past time to break up FCA into two parts: the Italians and the Americans. Sergio can then take FIAT and go home and then Chrysler can get some real leadership.
  11. Then what should those responsible for NAIAS do to address this for 2019 and 2020 and beyond? I have no idea what they should do either.
  12. It does put the Ford culling of sedans in greater context. As for the Germans (and Japanese) I doubt they will do the same since each has been winning ever since the 1980s. Mercedes may be forced to, but BMW and Audi will probably simply cut production rather than cancel entire car lines.
  13. I agree with both. Keep your head on a swivel at all times.
  14. Why have a hybrid powertrain on a car costing north of $250K when you can go full electric instead? Asking for a friend (who can afford one).
  15. Poor auto industry. Scott Pruitt refuses to take a simpler approach to this: get Congress to repeal CAFE standards in the first place. That would be ideal. So Pruitt pursues a rollback to 37 MPG eight years from now instead of the 46.8 MPG as proposed by the last administration. He might have gotten away with it if he left CA authority alone and focused on the rollback instead. His plan will probably fail because he got too greedy and wants to abolish higher state standards. Choose your battles wisely and you might actually win.
  16. Good thing they did not name this trim level SS. That belongs on high-performance cars (e.g. Camaro and Corvette) --- not a BOF SUV. Ever. NO. Just NO. Bad idea period. It is a rebodied truck, not a street-legal race car.
  17. All forms of innovation start at the high end and work their way down. Expect subscription services to replace car buying in at least 15 years or so.
  18. Maybe instead of an Ecosport, seek superior alternatives. As for California vs. Pruitt's EPA, expect CA to win in court. The only way Pruitt wins is if ALL emissions regulations and CAFE standards are repealed by Congress, and apparently there is no appetite for doing either one.
  19. Given current regulations, a cheap car (around $10K) and a cheap CUV (around $12K) would sell like hotcakes and cripple the used car market. Only problem is is that I suspect that automakers will pocket the profits by charging $3K more on top.
  20. Probably more since the current Explorer is a CUV rather than a sedan.
  21. So the new RAM has production issues for FCA. I wonder if it will lead to lost sales a few months from now. Or they get lucky and RAM buyers do not switch to Chevy/GMC or Ford during the interregnum.
  22. It matters that VW is doing this because of Europe, not the United States. If their primary market was the US, then they might make that consideration. Remember, Ford has the F-series and VW does not.
  23. I suspect that sooner or later all of Lincoln will be toast because Cadillac is outselling Lincoln everywhere in every segment.
  24. A unibody Land Rover Defender pickup? Have they not seen the lack of sales of the Honda Ridgeline? And Hondas have historically been better built than anything Land Rover has done over the years.
