1. QUOTE(Pontiac Custom-S @ Aug 24 2008, 07:10 PM) The SUV will only live as long as there is 2 dollar a gallon gasoline. I don't see gas in the US going back to $2 anytime soon. $4 is the new $2.
2. They certainly were in the Midwest...rust killed them even if the engines went on longer. People drive a lot more miles today per year, so the miles rack up faster. Anyway, neither here nor there, the past is gone. Today's cars are better, safer, more efficient, more reliable than those from the past. What is going to be interesting is how cars are going to evolve in the next decade.
3. I've seen it several times this evening...arrgh.
4. The thing is about longevity, cars today tend to go longer than the did in the past...30-40 years ago a car was usually worn out at 100k miles...today's cars are generally much more reliable over the long run...
5. And you think the Republicans will do any better? Look at the disaster of the last 8 years...the economy in a tailspin, massive increase in the deficit, run away spending, etc...the Republican party couldn't care less about the 'common man'..they are only interested in serving their corporate masters.
6. What is interesting is that GM and Chrysler are the only automakers in the world, AFAIK, that still do pushrod engines. The LS and Hemi are the last pushrod engines, I think. Even Ford moved away from them. (unless there are some obscure pushrod 4s still built in RIC countries). I'm afraid the reality is that pushrod engines are by and large, like carburators, BOF construction, etc artifacts of the past...
7. From the 'cars that don't seem to exist anymore and you haven't seen in decades' file, I saw what I think was a '79-80 Chrysler Newport or '80-81 Plymouth Gran Fury. I haven't seen a R-body up close in decades.... I was out front of my house and saw it zip by the end of the street, 5 houses away...just a quick glimpse of a big old seemingly extinct car...
8. I'm surprised Jaguar never brought back a V12 for the top-of-the line XJ sedan....no money, I guess.. I hadn't heard anything about BMW dropping their V12..they still have the 760Li (and the next gen F01/F02 is supposed to get a 760Li in '10, with an 8-speed auto).
9. I love that name...and Seville, and esp. Fleetwood for the big luxo boats..... deVille is certainly nicer than 'DTS', IMHO. DTS sounds like some software code to me..(since I work in the biz known for having zillions of TLAs).
10. I was -1 then. But my brother was 20 then and was on his 3rd car at Ohio State....he had previously had a '58 Biscayne, then a '66 Mustang GT convertible that my folks bought him, then a '65 Mustang 289 'hi-po' coupe...and a couple motorcycles.
11. Cool...so how do you synch the portable hard drive with the car---is there a USB or other connector on the head unit? Sounds great...
12. Yeah..and a few are advertised as having '8-track stereo with tapes'....and on some, 'air conditioned' merits all caps. Radical. I wonder what $4000 40 years ago is equivalent to today, with inflation.
13. By the way, whatever happened to the Cutlass? Sell it? Junk it? Drive it off a cliff?
14. I think he's sold out to try and attract the party faithful....the Republican party has shifted to the right strongly in the last decade...IIRC, a few years ago he called the disgusting evangelical scum like Pat Robertson and James Dobson 'agents of intolerance' but in the past year he's been cozying up them...
15. Yes...and some have really cool taste in cars...my last ex-gf had an '02 BMW 328Ci convertible and a '98 Jeep Wrangler, both manuals.
16. Yes..my buddy Steve bought his '91 in '98 for about $35k..it had 30k on it then...not sure how much it's worth now, but has 45k and is still very clean..black on black. It's my favorite Japanese car, probably..have driven it a few times--I love the feel...manual steering, manual transmission, great engine sounds, very reliable. There are a couple guys in the Colorado NSX Group that have over 100k on their cars--one guy has a '91 with almost 200k, has driven it cross country several times.
17. One thing I've noticed...10 years ago, even 5 years ago, all the major automakers had 3.0L V6s..there don't seem to be any now...everything tends toward 3.5 or larger...I wonder if we will the return of smaller V6s in the US...
18. McCain is just plain old, though. Same old right wing BS, even though he has the 'maverick' label. I'm sick of the conservatives, 'values voters', the 'God and Guns' crowd and all their BS....
19. As seen on Autoblog. It's funny, without the article, you really can't make out what brand it is...this just as easily could be some GM Epsilon II or a Toyota.. In the article it was thought to be a Hyundai Equus replacement, but they thought it was an Azera-based Kia generic.
20. Couldn't be any worse than the neocon's 'cut taxes, dramatically increase spending approach' of the last 8 years... I thought conservatives were supposed to be fiscally conservative? What BS...
21. Here's a related article that appeared today in Seeking Alpha about Bankruptcy and the Big 3. Bankruptcy and the Big 3
22. I think they changed the dash somewhere in it's run also...from squarish nasty plastics to rounded nasty plastics...
23. Actually, Obama has said he would institute a middle class tax cut....increase 'CEO' taxes... said no tax increase for people under $200k.. sounds like a good deal to me... Taxes article
24. "Well now I built that Challenger by myself But I needed money and so I sold it"
25. Haha...funky keyboard move to get the tilde, eh?
