    BMW, we need to have a talk.

    Whenever one German automaker does something new, others will follow. For example, the BMW X6 caused Mercedes-Benz to launch the GLE-Coupe. Now with the launch of the Mercedes-Benz X-Class in certain markets, BMW's Australian office is pushing the main office for a pickup truck.
    “We cannot close our eyes and neglect it, we cannot neglect market trends,” said Marc Werner, head of BMW Australia.
    "We have been very pushy regarding utes or pick-ups, and we believe that this is something the company should be looking into. We have raised that with headquarters and certainly investigations are happening as we speak, but it’s too early to speak about the results of that analysis, but if there was a ute we would certainly take it.”
    In Australia, pickups or utes as they are known is one fastest-growing segments in the country.
    “If you look at the market, more than 150,000 Utes [were sold last year], out of 1.1 m cars overall and I think that that segment grew last year by 17 percent,” said Werner.
    BMW building a ute really doesn't fit the image of the brand. But Werner disagrees, saying the similar arguments were given with the launch of the X5 in 1999. Now the X family of crossovers are some of BMWs most popular models.
    “At the end of the day, we need to cater for what the customer and consumer want – and then the question is does it fit with the BMW DNA and BMW brand promise or are we over-stretching the brand, that is the core question that needs to be answered. But from a pure engineering perspective, everything is possible. The question is what does the brand stand for and how far you want to stretch it.”
    If BMW decides to go forward with this idea, they could reach out to their alliance partner Toyota to use the Hilux truck as a base. Mercedes did the same as the X-Class is a reworked version of the Nissan Navara pickup.

    2019 BMW X4 Continues Forth

    Still confounding a number of people

    Whether or not you care for the BMW X4 'sport activity coupe', it is a big hit around the world. To keep its popularity up, the German automaker revealed the second-generation X4 this morning.
    Like the X3 on which it is based, the 2019 X4 sees an increase in overall length (3 inches) and width (2 inches). Most important for those sitting in the back is the extra 2 inches between the wheels, which should help improve rear legroom. The front end is similar to the redesigned X3 with larger kidney grilles, larger air intakes, and a new design for the foglights. The back features a tailgate design similar to the Mercedes-Benz GLC and GLE-Coupes.
    The interior is cleaned up with a new center stack design featuring a standard 10.25-inch touchscreen for BMW's iDrive system. Cargo space is still quite small with 19 cubic feet on offer behind the rear seats.
    BMW will offer the X4 with two engines,
    xDrive30i: Turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder - 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.
    X4 M40i: Turbocharged 3.0L inline-six - 355 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque
    Both engines will come paired with an eight-speed automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive.
    There will be a long list of options including adaptive cruise control, heads-up display, blind spot monitoring, and forward collision warning.
    The 2019 BMW X4 arrives at dealers in July with pricing of $50,450 for xDrive30, and $60,450 for M40i - doesn't include a destination charge.

    Vehicle concept and design.
    Its predecessor – the first ever Sports Activity Coupe at the premium end of the mid-size segment– broke new ground. Today, the all-new BMW X4 is writing the next chapter in this story of success. More than 200,000 units of the first-generation X4 have been sold worldwide and 19,712 in the US alone since the original model was launched in 2014. The all-new BMW X4 underscores its individual character with significantly enhanced driving dynamics, standout exterior design accentuating the car’s sporting instincts, a refined premium ambience in the interior, state-of-the-art driver assistance systems and leading-edge connectivity technologies. Additionally, the dynamic and extravagant aura of the Sports Activity Coupe is highlighted by the BMW M Performance model: the all-new BMW X4 M40i.

    The exterior design of the all-new BMW X4 features clean surfacing and high-class, modern accents. The BMW X4 assumes the role of eye-catching athlete in the BMW X model family. “The second-generation BMW X4 brings together a distinctive, dynamic silhouette with a clear, pared-back use of forms,” says Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design.

    Dynamically stretched proportions, powerful styling.
    An increase of approximately 3 inches in exterior length to 187.5 inches, 2.1 inches added to the wheelbase (now 112.7 inches), an extra 1.4 inches of width (75 inches) and an approximately 0.1 inch drop in height (to 63.8 inches) give to the all-new BMW X4’s dynamically stretched proportions. Short overhangs and powerfully formed, subtly hexagonal wheel arches emphasize the nearly perfectly balanced 50:50 distribution of weight between the front and rear axle.

    In the center of the striking front end stands a large BMW kidney grille in a new three-dimensional look. Twin headlight units with dynamic contours and horizontal fog lamps integrated into the outer air intakes form a new interpretation of the familiar six-eyed face embraced by BMW X models.

    All of the light functions feature LED technology as standard. The shoulder line – following the door handles to the rear lights – and the character line between the wheel arches break up the surfaces of the car’s flanks. This creates clearly defined lines which are additionally emphasized by the drawn-in glasshouse at the rear. The coupe style roofline slides into the rear window with an elegant flourish before dipping down more steeply to the rear. The window design also underline the dynamic proportions of the all-new BMW X4, thanks to a smoothly rising sill line and an elongated take on the Hofmeister kink “counter-swing” at the base of the C-pillars. Clearly structured surfaces and horizontal lines shape the car’s tail. The LED rear lights, with their three-dimensional shaping, are slim in design and positioned at the extreme edges of the rear. Combined with the twin exhaust tailpipes (shared by all engine variants), they magnify the width of the rear end.
    Standard xLine and the M Performance model.
    Two optional model variants allow drivers to tailor the appearance of the all-new BMW X4 to reflect their personal preference. Each variant comes with standalone design features as well as model-specific standard 19-inch light-alloy wheels. The robust nature of the Sports Activity Coupe is clearly expressed by the standard xLine design which combines bespoke front and rear underguard elements and side skirts in Glacier Silver metallic with side window surrounds and styling accents in a satin Aluminum finish. The M Performance model has an undeniably dynamic look, clearly stating its eagerness to deliver intense sportiness on the open road with its aerodynamically optimized front/rear aprons and side skirts, and accents in High-gloss Black. The all-new BMW X4 M40i can now also be specified with options from the BMW Individual portfolio. Extras designed to give the exterior an exceptionally exclusive feel include the BMW Individual paint finish Sunstone metallic.

    Interior and equipment. Sporting character with a modern, premium feel.
    The interior cabin of the all-new BMW X4 is roomier with a premium feel. All controls are clearly arranged and set within trim finishers featuring a distinctly pared-down design. The low instrument panel and the slightly raised seating position typical of BMW X models afford drivers a superb view of the road ahead. The driver-focused layout of the cockpit helps to create a wonderfully sporty driving experience at all times. Redesigned sports seats with boldly contoured side bolsters provide outstanding lateral support even in extreme handling situations. Top-class materials, precise build quality and a host of meticulously crafted details set the tone for the modern and individual premium character of the all-new BMW X4. The surfaces of the instrument panel and door paneling merge smoothly into one another, while the X logos embossed into the electroplated surfaces of the front and rear doors are eye-catching details. The ambient lighting, adding extra light sources around the center console and instrument panel, in the door paneling and in the foot wells, enhances the sense of wellbeing in the interior of the all-new BMW X4. The lighting mood can be adjusted as the driver pleases thanks to a choice of six colors. Large storage trays, roomy door pockets, cup holders and various compartments are all testimony to the functional qualities of the all-new BMW X4.

    Effective differentiation in the interior, too.
    The BMW X4 xDrive30i comes standard with xLine and exclusive design features are available for the BMW X4 M40i M Performance model. Standard sports seats and interior trim strips in Dark Oak Wood with accent strips in Pearl-effect Chrome give the cabin of the BMW X4 xDrive30i an air of elegance. The audio and air conditioning control panels sport a Pearl-effect Chrome surround and Highgloss Black highlights. The BMW X4 M40i also comes with M specific sports seats, a sport leather steering wheel and the standard anthracite-colored BMW Individual headliner, complemented by interior trim strips in Aluminum Rhombicle with accent strips in Pearl-effect Chrome. Standard on the BMW X4 xDrive30i model is a Sensatec instrument panel and door shoulder.There is also the option of the new Vernasca leather upholstery, which is exclusively available for the all-new BMW X4 in the color Tacora Red, as well as in Black with a choice of blue or red contrast stitching for both the 30i with M Sport package and the M40i. Additionally, the BMW X4 M40i can be specified with options from the BMW Individual portfolio. Options include BMW Individual extended Merino leather upholstery (in the color combinations Ivory White/Black, Fiona Red/Black and Tartufo/Black),

    Comfort and functionality.
    A far wider array of options, offers greater scope for customers to increase both the comfort and functionality of the all-new BMW X4. The range includes electrically adjustable and heated seats, active seat ventilation and three-zone automatic climate control with separately adjustable temperature control in the rear. A standard panoramic glass moon roof with much larger dimensions than the predecessor offers passengers additional comfort. The two-section glass surface with an overall length of 36.4 inches and a width of 35 inches allows the amount of light in the interior and the supply of fresh air to be varied as required and creates space. The sun blind is electrically operated, as is the front section of the glass roof.

    Three full-size seats are fitted in the rear compartment of the all-new BMW X4, providing the passengers there with an additional 1 inch of legroom over the predecessor model. The trunk features a capacity of 18.5 ft³ and the load space can be expanded to a maximum of 50.5 ft³ as required by folding down the sections of the rear backrest, with its standard 40:20:40 split. For added ease, the backrest sections can be released remotely from the trunk, while their angle to be individually adjusted, too. The standard storage package adds additional compartments, USB ports and 12V sockets, as well as multifunctional hooks and lashing rails in the trunk.
    Powertrain and driving experience.
    The all-new BMW X4 will be launched with a choice of latest-generation power units. The four-cylinder unit in the all-new BMW X4 xDrive30i generates 248 hp and peak torque of 258 lb-ft, which is on tap between 1,450 and 4,800 rpm. This enables the car to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 6 seconds. The BMW TwinPower Turbo technology for the gasoline engines comprises a twin-scroll turbocharger, High Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC fully variable valve timing and Double-VANOS variable camshaft control.

    The BMW M Performance model comes with an inline six-cylinder engine. Both model variants direct their engine’s power to the road via an eight-speed Steptronic transmission and BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive as standard, resulting in effortless progress over smooth roads and rough terrain alike. Gear selections can be selected manually using the shift paddles on the steering wheel. The standard eight-speed Sport transmission offers exceptionally fast gear changes as well as a Launch Control function. The standard-fit Driving Experience Control switch lets drivers choose from SPORT, COMFORT and ECO PRO set-ups, while the BMW X4 M40i, and BMW X4 xDrive30i models also add a SPORT+ mode.

    The engines under the hood of BMW M Performance Automobiles stand out with their instantaneous response and tireless power delivery. With its trademark free-revving performance, maximum output of 355 hp and peak torque of 365 lb-ft, the power unit in the all-new BMW X4 M40i enables it to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds.

    Reduced weight, enhanced aerodynamic properties.
    An intelligent material mix has made it possible to bring about a substantial weight saving, not just in the chassis design but also in the body’s construction. BMW EfficientLightweight measures led to the increase in the proportion of aluminum as well as high-strength and ultra-high-strength grades of steel. This has made the body structure more solid than ever, serving up benefits for both vehicle agility and occupant protection. Additionally, the car has a significantly lower center of gravity which enhances the Sports Activity Coupe’s cornering dynamics.

    Another factor in the dynamism and efficiency of the all-new BMW X4 is a reduction in aerodynamic drag of around 10 percent. This advance has been achieved by streamlining the body at the same time as incorporating a raft of additional measures, including active air flap control, the Air Curtains in the front apron and additional underbody cladding. The all-new BMW X4 sets a new benchmark in its segment with a drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.30.

    BMW xDrive: precise distribution of power with optimized efficiency.
    The latest version of the system is lighter and more efficient. Plus, the wonderfully precise electronic control of the intelligent all-wheel drive also splits drive power to the sporting effect for which the brand is renowned; the rear-biased set-up produces a highly rewarding driving experience, especially when powering through corners. Besides offering BMW handling stability, BMW xDrive also enhances traction over loose terrain, providing the all-new BMW X4 with tremendous off-road capabilities. With a ground clearance of 8 inches a fording depth of 19.6 inches, break over angle of 19.4° and angles of approach and departure of 25.7° and 22.6° respectively, the Sports Activity Coupe takes everything in its stride, from crests and bumps in the road to gravel tracks, icy roads and steep slopes.

    First-class chassis technology with bespoke set-up.
    The all-new BMW X4 boasts a marked increase in agility combined with a high degree of ride comfort, courtesy of chassis technology that has been systematically refined and honed for the specific requirements of the Sports Activity Coupe. The design principle of a double-joint spring strut axle at the front and five-link rear axle forms the ideal basis for a harmonious blend of dynamism and comfort. Fitting aluminum swivel bearings, lightweight tubular anti roll bars and new wheel location components at the front axle has brought about a considerable reduction in unsprung masses. Standard specification for the all-new BMW X4 xDrive30i includes not only M Sport suspension but also variable sport steering. Specially tuned to deliver extra-dynamic handling qualities, this version of the Electric Power Steering system ensures slick precision through keenly taken corners and straight-line stability. The speed-sensitive Servotronic power assistance, meanwhile, makes light work of maneuvering.

    The car’s impressively sporty and well footed handling characteristics are enhanced by the powerful lightweight braking system and the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system, whose wealth of features includes the Antilock Braking System (ABS), Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), Automatic Differential Brake (ADB-X), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), Start-Off Assistant and Hill Descent Control (HDC). The Performance Control function also included as standard gives the all-new BMW X4 even sharper handling by varying the distribution of drive torque to the rear wheels according to the situation at hand. 19-inch light-alloy wheels also form part of standard specification, while wheel options offered include 19 inch, 20 inch and 21 inch wheel offerings.

    The BMW M Performance model.
    Featuring model specific design and equipment features, the inline six cylinder engine is supported by chassis technology that has been precisely tuned to handle the high drive power. In the US, the BMW X4 M40i variant comes standard with M Sport brakes, which allow drivers to enjoy exceptionally dynamic handling with phenomenal stopping power. The system includes extra-large brake discs and blue painted calipers. Also standard is the Adaptive M Suspension featuring electronically controlled dampers whose responses adjust to the nature of the road and driving style. Drivers can choose between a sportier or more comfortable basic setting by activating the relevant performance maps using the Driving Experience Control switch.

    The standard M sports exhaust system produces unmistakable sound while the M Sport differential serves up wonderfully dynamic cornering. The flap-controlled M sports exhaust system on the BMW M Performance models doesn’t just make a great impression acoustically, though – its trapezoidal tailpipes in black chrome form a stunning visual highlight. Power is relayed to the wheels via an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission including Launch Control function as standard. The sporty nature of the BMW M Performance model is enhanced by the rear biased set-up of the BMW xDrive all-wheel drive and the Performance Control function. The standard M Sport differential generates a precise locking effect at the rear wheels, priming the car perfectly to power out of corners with dynamic drive.

    The BMW X4 M40i comes equipped as standard with M Sport brakes and 19-inch light-alloy wheels; variable sport steering and M Sport suspension with firmer spring and damper tuning. The M Sport brakes are specially designed with an extra-large master cylinder to help optimize braking feel. Customers can also opt for the Adaptive M suspension, which is exclusively available for the two BMW M Performance models and further broadens the range of adjustment between sporty handling and well-balanced ride comfort. Two 19-inch wheels with either performance run-flat tires or all-season run-flat tires are available. Sporting a Double-spoke M twinspoke design in bi-color Orbit Grey polished finish, they add a striking visual touch. The options list also includes two 20-inch light-alloy wheels, and one 21-inch M Double-spoke Cerium Gray wheel.

    Aerodynamically refined exterior with M appeal.
    Aerodynamically optimized body elements combined with model-specific exterior design features add to the sporty and exclusive looks of the BMW M Performance. The Cerium Grey finish for the exterior mirror caps and front air intake trim inserts is just one example. A Sensatec covering for the instrument panel and door shoulders, sports seats, model badging for the door sill strips, instrument panel and instrument display, plus additional details such as the sport leather steering wheel, M pedals and M driver’s footrest, all help to inject the cabin with unmistakable M flair.

    Controls and driver assistance systems. Innovations for comfortable, safe driving.
    The latest version of the iDrive operating system fitted in the all-new BMW X4 is designed to offer even more flexible and ergonomic control of vehicle, navigation, communication and infotainment functions. Its Control Display now takes the form of a freestanding monitor with a screen diagonal of 10.25-inch as standard. The high-resolution display that comes with the standard Navigation system Professional includes touchscreen functionality. The intuitive touch control also offers a tile-style menu layout with live content. The voice control system is the latest from BMW and can follow freely formulated instructions to find a point of interest such as, “Find a coffee shop near the Empire State Building” or simply, “I’m hungry”. There is also the option of using BMW gesture control in the all-new BMW X4, allowing certain functions to be operated with simple movements of the hand or fingers, which are registered by a 3D sensor in the center console and translated into the relevant commands. Another option is the new-generation BMW Head-Up Display, whose projection area has been expanded by 75 percent. This system reflects driving-related information onto the windscreen in full color and with a resolution of 400 x 800 pixels, so that it appears directly in the driver’s field of vision. The optionally available Dynamic Digital Instrument Cluster, meanwhile, visualizes the driving-related cockpit information in a style that reflects the selected driving mode.

    Cutting-edge assistance systems enhance comfort and safety.
    When it comes to driver assistance and semi-automated driving, all the systems currently offered by BMW are available, such as the latest generation of Active Cruise Control (ACC) with Stop & Go, whose capabilities include braking the car to a halt in stop-and-go traffic and automatically restarting to drive. The Driving Assistance Package includes Blind Spot Detection, Lane Departure Warning, Daytime Pedestrian Protection, Frontal Collision Warning with City Collison Mitigation, Cross Traffic Alert rear, and Speed Limit Information. The Driving Assistant Plus Package builds upon that with: Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Active Lane Keeping Assistant with Side Collision Avoidance, Traffic Jam Assistant, Evasion Aid & Cross Traffic alert front and rear

    Parking with ease: ParkNow and On-Street Parking Information.
    The ParkNow service, available in iDrive, allows parking spaces at the roadside and in parking garages to be easily located, booked and paid for without the need for cash. This cash-less, ticket-less, and hassle-free service can greatly shorten the time taken to find and pay for parking. In-car integration of ParkNow is initially available in select cities nationwide.     First launched with the BMW 5 Series, the new On-Street Parking Information (OSPI) service now available in 20 cities helps alleviate the problem of vehicles searching for available on-street parking spaces – which accounts for a large part of traffic congestion in city centers. OSPI works in a similar way to the Advanced Real Time Traffic Information System, using historical and current data as well as complex algorithms to draw conclusions regarding the potential availability of on-street parking spaces in specific zones or in a particular part of the city. The probability of on street parking availability is shown on the Navigation map as colored indicators along the street, allowing the driver to minimize the need to circle the block in search of a spot by targeting streets with a higher probability of available parking spaces.

    The options list likewise includes a WiFi hotspot offering a high-speed internet connection (LTE) for up to ten mobile devices. Apple CarPlay Compatibility is included with a one-year trial. The industry’s first implementation of a wireless Apple CarPlay solution is now augmented with a flexible way for customers to continue the feature after their trial period. After the inclusive one-year trial, customers can elect to buy the feature from the ConnectedDrive Store within the My BMW ConnectedDrive portal or right from the driver’s seat from within the iDrive menu system of the vehicle.

    This system also comprises the Top View, Panorama View and 3D View functions, which combine to depict a 360º image of the vehicle and the surrounding area on the Control Display. The Remote 3D View function additionally gives drivers the ability to call up a three-dimensional live image of their vehicle and its immediate vicinity on their smartphone via BMW Connected.

    Linked up to the driver’s digital world thanks to BMW Connected.
    The digital services from the BMW Connected app, available on both iOS and Android, bring intelligent connectivity to the all-new BMW X4 and unparalleled convenience for the driver. With the help of the Open Mobility Cloud platform, the digital services connect to the BMW X4 via devices such as smartphones or smartwatches, resulting in seamless connectivity.

    The selection of devices that can connect to the new BMW X4 by means of BMW Connected go beyond the smartphone by supporting devices such the Apple Watch, Amazon Echo, and Google Assistant. Customers can speak to the Amazon Echo or Google Assistant to check the fuel level, lock the vehicle or activate the ventilation function, all from the comfort of their home.

    With BMW Connected, being on-time has never been simpler. Machine learning made possible by the Open Mobility Cloud allows BMW Connected to learn your routines and suggest the optimal time to leave for an appointment. Location based services and real time traffic information help optimize your journey even before entering the vehicle. Once on your route, the Advanced Real-Time Traffic Information can continue to optimize your journey. Crowd-sourced vehicle to vehicle communication is now employed within the inter-connected BMW fleet to provide advance warning of hazardous traffic situations. Information on detected hazards presented by an accident, a broken-down vehicle, dense fog, heavy rain or black ice, for example, is relayed to the BMW backend from where it is sent into the navigation system of both the driver’s car and other BMWs in the vicinity.

    Connectivity enhances safety, comfort and infotainment.
    The standard built-in SIM card also allows drivers of the all-new BMW X4 to use Intelligent Emergency Call with automatic locating and accident severity detection. With the new BMW Teleservice Accident Assistance, the vehicle now detects low-speed collisions below the threshold for airbag deployment. The driver receives a message in the iDrive display offering to contact the BMW Accident Assistance service directly. A push of a button is all it takes to obtain professional support from the BMW Accident Assistance team, who can also put the customer in touch with a BMW Service Partner if necessary.

    Paris seems to be out

    It was thought that BMW would use the Paris Motor Show later this year to debut the production version of the X7 three-row crossover. But a report from Autocar says the new model will bow at the LA Auto Show. Considering the model was developed for the U.S. and Chinese markets, this move makes some sense.
    BMW has already built pre-production X7s at their Spartanburg, South Carolina plant for testing. The production model will also be built here.
    Autocar reports that the X7 at launch will come with a range of six- and eight-cylinder gas and diesel engines. A plug-in hybrid and an M performance version are expected down the road.
    It is still unknown when BMW is planning to send the X7 out to dealers, but a safe guess is sometime early next year.

    Changes afoot for i and Mini

    BMW appears to be making a number of changes to future plans once again. According to a report from Automobile Magazine, a number of BMW i models have been canned. They include a proposed i9 flagship sedan (replaced by a slightly smaller i7 sedan), the i5 which was supposed to arrive in 2023, and an even larger version of the i3. Other plans that reportedly been canceled include a supercar plan with McLaren and new vehicle architecture with Diamler.
    The situation is somewhat worse at Mini. Automobile said plans for a joint development of a new small car platform with Toyota have fallen through. It was expected this platform would have underpin the next-generation Mini Cooper. According to some sources, BMW is working a deal with Chinese automaker Great Wall about developing a new platform for Mini.

    Another one of BMW's plans has us shaking our heads

    BMW previewed their upcoming three-row crossover with the the X7 iPerformance concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show. There is now talk about adding a coupe-like design derivative known as the X8.
    BMW’s head of development, Klaus Fröhlich told Autocar that the company is considering such a model, but there are  no concrete plans for this.
    “The sector is growing fast, so there will be opportunity, It is early to talk about X8, but one of the first decisions I made when I worked on product strategy was to take the X5 and make the X6," said Fröhlich.
    “There is room for X8 – especially in markets like China – but there are no decisions yet. Each car must have a distinct character, and these are the sort of areas that take time to evaluate.”
    Autocar reports discussions at the moment deal with the design. BMW is looking into either doing something like the X4 and X6 or designing a long-wheelbase variant that would free up space in the back to allow for a sweeping coupe roof. The latter option is said to be favored by many, but could make this project complex as it would make BMW create a new platform that will be a hybrid of the CLAR modular platform and the upcoming modular platform for Rolls-Royce.
    No matter which design BMW decides to go with, the X8 is said to have seating for four or five people and provide a number of luxuries for those sitting in the back.

    What are you doing BMW?

    Whether we like it or not, crossovers print money for automakers and some are going above and beyond to make sure they get every last dollar. Case in point is BMW which unveiled the X2 which follows the same formula of the X4 and X6 by taking an existing model (the X1 in this case) and injecting a bit more sport.
    Unlike the X4 and X6, the X2 doesn't have the coupe-like roofline. It instead looks like your standard crossover, albeit a low-slung and extroverted one. Compared to the X1, the X2 is 3.2-inches shorter and 2.8-inches lower. Design details include a long hood, raked windshield, aggressively styled rear-end, and the BMW emblem on the rear pillars making a callback to some of the brand's legendary coupes such as the 2000 CS and 3.0 CS. We'll admit when we saw the X2, our first thought was BMW built a knockoff-version of the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class.
    The interior is the same as you'll find in the X1 with a minimalistic design and contrasting materials. A 6.5-inch screen with BMW iDrive comes standard, while a larger 8.8-inch screen is available as an option.
    While Europe will get a range of diesel and gas engines, the U.S. will only see a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder with 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. This is routed through an eight-speed automatic and BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive system. BMW says the X2 will reach 60 mph in 6.3 seconds.
    BMW says the X2 will arrive in U.S. showrooms next spring. Pricing will be announced before the launch.

    The first ever BMW X2: powerful and agile.
    The BMW X2 has an invigoratingly fresh feel to it even in its standard specification. It immediately stands out as a BMW X model, yet it has a highly distinctive and unique appearance. This is partly due to its unique proportions, the execution of many of its details, the placement of the BMW roundel and the reinterpretation of a BMW design icon – the kidney grille. In addition, the black strip of body trim encircling the body produces the characteristically robust X model look, while lending visual emphasis to the ground clearance.
    Eloquent looks, dynamic proportions.
    Above all, it is the BMW X2’s proportions which create its expressive, dynamic demeanor. It is 3.2 inches shorter and 2.8 inches lower than the BMW X1, yet has the same wheelbase giving the first-ever BMW X2 a more muscular look. Featuring short overhangs, it also has a stretched, coupe-style roofline and slim window graphic.

    BMW TwinPower Turbo Engine and 8-speed Automatic transmission.
    The first-ever BMW X2 xDrive28i will be available at launch with the latest generation 2.0-liter BMW TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder engine featuring a twin-tailpipe design, measuring 3.5 inches in diameter, that draws attention to the sporty character. This engine features a TwinScroll turbocharger, High Precision Direct Injection, VALVETRONIC fully variable valve lift, and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing. In addition, it incorporates aluminum crankcase and cylinder head, forged steel crankshafts with an integrated balance shaft drive, low-weight pistons, forged connecting rods, friction-reduced cylinder coatings and map-controlled oil pumps. This powerful engine develops 228 hp from 5,000 – 6,000 rpm and peak torque of 258 lb-ft, available between 1,450 rpm and 4,500 rpm. In typical BMW TwinPower Turbo fashion, the driving torque is effortlessly and instantly delivered for a dynamic and agile driving experience, accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.3 seconds.
    The 8-speed Steptronic transmission ensures a sporty driving character while providing maximum efficiency.     BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive.
    The compact, low-weight and efficient all-wheel-drive system distributes the engine’s power between the front and rear axle exactly as the situation requires. The BMW xDrive system ensures excellent traction, optimized directional stability and enhanced cornering dynamics in all weather and road conditions. The combination of the DSC system and xDrive also includes integral Hill Descent Control which enables the BMW X2 to automatically maintain a desired speed on steep descents by taking care of brake control for the driver, who can purely remain focused on steering the vehicle.
    The xDrive system of the first-ever BMW X2 consists of a single-speed bevel gear and a rear-axle drive unit with an electro-hydraulically controlled multi-plate clutch than controls longitudinal torque distribution. When required, the multi-plate clutch – with the help of an electrohydraulic pump – diverts the engine’s power to the rear wheels as necessary. It does so in less than 250 ms and unnoticed by the driver. The DSC system keeps the pump’s control unit constantly supplied with important data for analyzing the driving situation. The data includes the vehicle’s speed, lateral and longitudinal acceleration, steering lock, wheel-speed, pitch, accelerator position, the Driving Dynamic Control and DSC settings. This information is used to determine the ideal power split between the front and rear wheels.

    A distinctive character define the first-ever BMW X2.
    Many of the design details emphasize the BMW X2’s standalone nature while simultaneously and unequivocally signaling its membership of the X family. The iconic BMW kidney grille is just one example, turning the familiar trapezoidal shape on its head and instead widening from top to bottom. This is the first time this design detail has seen the light of day on a modern BMW.
    The C-pillars host two characteristic BMW features: the hallmark BMW Hofmeister kink and, for the first time on a BMW X model, the BMW roundel. There is something special about the design of both these items. As an integral element of the C-pillar, the Hofmeister kink on the BMW X2 is slightly elongated and does not cross over the door line. This boosts the dynamic looks of this Sports Activity Coupe. The BMW roundel on the C-pillars invokes a design cue much admired on classic BMW coupes such as the 2000 CS and 3.0 CSL, and ensures the car is instantly recognizable on the road.

    BMW kidney grille.
    The kidney grille has always been an identifying feature of any BMW. On the BMW X2, however, its outline is wider at its base than at its top. The BMW X2 is the first BMW to feature this new design cue, and it gives the new car a broader, even more distinctive and even sportier appearance. Below the grille, the hexagonal design of the lower section reinforces this impression. The kidney grille provides a visual expression of the BMW X2’s classy appeal. The leading edge of the kidney grill bars in High-gloss Black contrast with the grille’s chrome surround accent.
    Headlights.
    The design of the BMW X2’s headlights reinforces its striking, sporty looks. New hexagonal elements of the full LED headlights (including LED daytime driving lights) combine with the fog lamps to create the characteristic six-eyed face of the X family and make the vehicle instantly recognizable. Because the inner headlights are slightly narrower than the outer ones, it gives the BMW X2 a focused presence. Moreover, chrome surfaces add a high-quality touch while a chrome bar at the outer edges enhances the impression of width. Full-LED headlights are available as standard for the BMW X2. The bi-LED light for low beam and high beam is extremely bright and effective at illuminating the road, while also accentuating the BMW X2’s sporty looks. The headlights display fine detailing, achieved in part through hexagonal LED daytime driving light tubes and laser engraving.
    Side skirts.
    The side skirts of the BMW X2 are among its signature features and their design varies depending on specification. The body trim is black on the standard version of the car and visible from all angles. This creates a rugged look typical of X family models, gives the appearance of high ground clearance and ensures it is easily recognized.
    Roofline.
    The roofline of the BMW X2 has an almost coupe-like lightness, which gives the whole car the impression of surging forward. A key contributor is the styling above the familiar BMW character line, where the body tapers in sharply towards the greenhouse. The athletic shoulders generate a large number of light surfaces in the upper section of the BMW X2 and makes the greenhouse appear lighter. The rear slim window together with the optional M Rear Spoiler inject an extra dose of sportiness into the car’s proportions.
    Design highlights: rear end:

    Rear spoiler.
    The rear spoiler provides a dynamic flourish to round of the BMW X2’s roofline. As well as emphasizing the car’s sportiness, it also highlights the streamlined look of the rear window area. Combined with the width-enhancing rear bumper, this creates a powerful rear view. In addition, the rear spoiler with side-mounted aero edges in High-gloss Black is one of the influential factors in the BMW X2’s aerodynamics. The standard rear spoiler can be replaced on the M Sport X model with the even sportier M Rear Spoiler.
    Rear lights: clearly recognizable, even in the dark.
    The horizontal design lines of the BMW X2’s rear end tighten the visual distance between the car and the road, emphasizing the car’s width and therefore its sporty character. These lines continue into the high-set rear lights. The LED rear lights represent a symbiosis of the T-shape lighting contour shared by other BMW X models and the L shape familiar from BMW coupes. This iconographic light signature includes a precise LED strip on the inside of the rear light units.
    Rear bumper.
    The BMW X2 has a broad, planted stance on the road, especially when viewed from the rear. Creating this impression of width are the horizontal design lines and a distinctive rear bumper. The latter’s design will vary depending on the car’s specification. On the standard car, it comes in the vehicle color and matte black. The BMW X2 M Sport X, meanwhile, gets a specific diffusor insert in Frozen Grey. The new rear bumper and tailgate design sees the latter sitting flush with the rear apron giving it a harmonious feel.
    BMW X2 equipment option highlights:
    Exterior colors.
    The BMW X2 comes in non-metallic paint as standard in either Alpine White or Jet Black. Nine additional exterior colors are available, including the new Galvanic Gold metallic finish.
    Wheels.
    The BMW X2 has a poised on-road stance thanks to large wheels with striking designs. The BMW X2 comes standard on 18-inch wheel Y-spoke wheels and optional 19-inch Y-spoke wheels.
    Upholstery.
    The BMW X2 is upholstered as standard in SensaTec in either black or oyster, but customers also have numerous optional leathers to choose from. They include four shades of Dakota leather with coordinated contrast stitching and part-perforation, including the new Magma Red Dakota leather.

    The design of the first-ever BMW X2 M Sport X combines design elements from BMW M and the BMW X family. Taking its cue from the radical designs of rally cars, the use of Frozen Grey as an accent color throughout the BMW X2 M Sport X provides an overall image of striking contrasts. This shade is used for features such as the specific M Sport X elements, which are visible from virtually every angle, and creates a distinctive ground clearance appearance.
    Additional standout features of the M Sport X model include the bumper styling. “With the BMW X2 we’re introducing our new M Sport X model variant,” says Marcus Syring, Head of Design BMW M Automobiles. “The richly contrasting signature color Frozen Grey and recurring hexagonal elements are among its defining visual features. This model variant is inspired by rally racing. It embodies our interpretation of a new, young ‘M’ dynamic and offers a nuanced manifestation of sportiness.”
    BMW X2 M Sport X equipment option highlights.
    Exterior colors.
    The standard exterior color for the BMW X2 M Sport X is Alpine White nonmetallic, against which the wraparound signature shade Frozen Grey produces a stunning visual contrast. Additionally, seven metallic exterior colors are available as an option, including Milano Blue Metallic, Sunset Orange Metallic and the new Galvanic Gold metallic finish that gives added impact to the character of the BMW X2 M Sport X.
    Wheels.
    The 19-inch style 722 M Double Spoke wheels fitted on the BMW X2 M Sport X as standard are exclusive to this model variant and are available with All-season or Performance tires. The optional 20-inch style 717 M Double Spoke wheels with Performance tires, really grab the attention – not just with their size, but their extravagant design – a standout feature in this vehicle segment.
    Trim finishers.
    The new Aluminum Hexagon Anthracite trim finisher with an accent strip in Pearl-effect Chrome is reserved for the BMW X2 M Sport X. Its design mirrors the hexagonal structure that is also a characteristic feature of this particular model’s exterior styling. Three additional trim finishers are available and all include an accent strip that matches the specific trim finisher, as well as contour lighting in the door trim.
    Interior and equipment: Contemporary ambience with premium flair.
    The interior of the BMW X2 blends signature BMW elements, such as a pronounced driver focus and dynamic lines, with the understated ruggedness of a BMW X model. The high-class quality of the BMW X2 and its impressive level of equipment, even in the standard version, are both instantly apparent. The instrument panel has contrast stitching and decorative stitching as standard, while the center console features materials including Sensatec with contrast stitching. Eye-catching highlights can be added by opting for the newly available perforated Dakota leather in Magma Red.
    The first-ever BMW X2 combines all of this with a generous helping of everyday practicality. The trunk has a capacity of 50.1 cubic feet, meaning it can effortlessly handle luggage from ski weekends or mountain-bike tours or a day out with the family. This high level of functionality manifests itself in the passenger compartment too, thanks to features such as a door design with large pockets and additional storage compartments.
    Interior highlights:
    Driver focus.
    The cabin of the BMW X2 is focused on the driver, with the design of features such as the instrument panel binnacle clearly directed at the road ahead. All controls are ergonomically positioned to allow the driver to assimilate their information with a single glance and operate them with ease.
    Characteristic BMW X-model seating position.
    The driver and passengers are seated in an elevated position, albeit slightly lower than in the BMW X1, in typical BMW X-model fashion. This results in an excellent all-round view and places the driver in complete control of the driving situation. Both the driver and passengers seem to be looking down on the instrument panel, which enforces the impression of an optimal view over the road – combined with flawless operability.
    Materials.
    The softly foamed instrument panel is pleasant to the touch and gains visual appeal with contrast and decorative stitching. Sophisticated upholstery variants are available as options, including five Dakota leather variants with part-perforation and coordinated contrast stitching. The choice of trim finishers, including High-gloss Black, Aluminum and matte Oak Grain variants, also underlines the high-quality credentials of the first-ever BMW X2.
    Controls.
    All functional controls in the center console are set in high-gloss black fascia’s as standard, giving the interior a special touch of timeless elegance.
    Ambient Lighting.
    The standard ambient lighting allows drivers to set a stylish lighting mood for the interior of their BMW X2 by choosing the color of their preference: Orange, Lilac, Mint, Bronze, Blue or White. The LED lighting in the trim surfaces of the instrument panel and door panels forms a continuous band that extends all the way around the cabin to the rear. The way in which the monitor and control consoles seem to be almost floating above and in front of the instrument panel is a particularly stunning effect at night-time.
    Black panel technology.
    The modern black panel technology included in every BMW X2 as standard is one of its standout features. Employed for both the instrument cluster and the information display, it highlights the vehicle’s high level of technical sophistication. The instrument panel and Info Display with Black Panel Technology provide the BMW Driver with a clearly-arranged overview of important information. ‘Black Panel’ means that one only sees an elegant, matte, black surface when the ignition is turned off. Only a few details, like the scale markings on the dials, are still visible. The instruments – only those selected by the driver or relevant to his current needs – appear when the driver presses the start button.
    Panoramic roof.
    The panoramic roof found on the list of optional extras adds to the sense of spaciousness inside the BMW X2 and bathes the passenger compartment in light. The front section of the panoramic roof tilts and slides open, just like a conventional sunroof.
    Digital services in the first-ever BMW X2:

    The intelligently connected, clever way to travel.
    As far as BMW is concerned, there is one thing that always comes first in a connected vehicle: the task of driving. For this reason, all of the BMW ConnectedDrive and BMW Connected elements in the new BMW X2 have once again been designed to assist, inform or entertain the driver at the appropriate time using just the right services. Intuitive interaction between driver and vehicle forms the basis for top-class connectivity. The new BMW X2 offers its driver three different ways of interacting with their car, as the sixth generation of the iDrive control concept now supplements the familiar iDrive Controller, the cloud based voice control, as well as optional touchscreen operation for the Control Display. The touchscreen can also be used comfortably by the front passenger.
    “We focused on presenting the customer’s interaction pathways with the car via the displays in a visually appealing and coherent way, as well as making them intuitive to use,” explains Gernot Schmierer, Head of User Experience Design for BMW Group Design. “With the BMW X2, we’re giving our customers the chance to interact with their car in the way they feel most comfortable. The BMW X2 uses the optional touch functionality and the optional Head-Up Display to offer a first-class customer experience in this vehicle class.”
    Intuitive usability and displays.
    Standard specification for every BMW X2 includes a 6.5-inch freestanding Control Display. This is upgraded to a 6.5-inch or 8.8-inch Touch Control Display if a navigation system is selected. The display concept is designed to provide the driver with a quick summary of the most important information at any particular time by means of, for example, the live tiles that appear in the display’s main menu. If an optional navigation system is specified, its operation emulates the intuitive touch control principles familiar from smartphones. For even greater safety and convenience in the BMW X2, there is the option of the full-color BMW Head-Up Display, which projects a high resolution image of all important driving information and navigation/assistance system readouts onto the windscreen and therefore into the driver’s field of view.
    Intelligently connected: BMW Connected+.
    The integration of the BMW Connected app and BMW ConnectedDrive Services focuses on the needs of the BMW X2 driver. These digital services and comfort-enhancing functions enable X2 drivers to organize their daily routines as efficiently as possible. BMW Connected provides a digital bridge between smartphones and the car by offering ways to remotely control the vehicle, view important data, and provide a simple way to send destinations and trips to the vehicle. With the extended functionality of Connected+, there is the next level of in-car personalization and smartphone content integration on the Control Display of the BMW X2. This makes display and operation in the vehicle simpler than ever. One example of a new Connected+ service is Share Live Trip Status, which makes the question “What’s your ETA” a thing of the past; the driver can share a link containing live dynamic content of his or her current location and time of arrival with any contact. Among the other highlight features enabling connectivity anytime, anywhere are the optional WiFi hotspot preparation, which equips the BMW X2 to host a built-in WiFi hotspot with LTE speeds, and the optional telephony with wireless charging for compatible smartphones. The optional Apple CarPlay® Compatibility, meanwhile, enables easy, wireless in-car use of selected iPhone functions.
    Driver assistance systems: drive with assurance, arrive relaxed.
    Not only does the BMW X2 offer drivers a wide selection of driver assistance systems, it also boasts highly advanced technologies. The optional camera-based Driving Assistance Package available for the first-ever BMW X2 help to ensure greater assurance and safety in different driving situations and includes: Lane Departure Warning, Speed Limit Info, Automatic High Beams, as well as Frontal Collision Warning and Pedestrian Warning with City Braking function. In addition to these functions, the ACC Stop & Go + Active Driving Assistant is available– which maintains both a desired speed between 19 – 87 mph entered by the driver and the safety distance to vehicles travelling ahead. Park Distance Control and the rear-view camera, make precise and comfortable maneuvering that much easier.     Whenever there is a new 5-Series, the countdown clock is started for the arrival of high-performance M5. Today, the clock hit zero as BMW unveiled the 2018 M5.
    Under the hood lies a familiar twin-turbo 4.4L V8 with 600 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque - healthy increases of 40 and 53 respectively. A new eight-speed automatic is the sole transmission choice, sorry manual lovers. The 2018 M5 also comes with the M xDrive system which can either send power to all four wheels or just the rear wheels if you want to some smoky drifts. 60 mph comes in 3.2 seconds and can hit a top speed of 155 mph (189 mph if you opt for the M Driver's Package).
    BMW has also done a bit of work to the M5's suspension with new wheel bearings, firmer anti-roll bars, and a steel x-brace. 15.5-inch steel rotors with six-piston calipers up front and single-piston calipers in the rear help bring the M5 to a stop. A set of carbon ceramic brakes are available as an option. There has also been a bit of weight loss with aluminum being used for the hood and front fenders and carbon fiber for the roof.
    There is a special edition of the M5 called the First Edition that is limited to 400 models worldwide, with 50 of those coming to the U.S. First Edition models stand out from the standard M5 with Frozen Dark Red Metallic paint, gloss black used on the grille and tailpipes; and a set of 20-inch black wheels.

The driver is then able to vary the handling characteristics of the M5 by enabling various driving dynamics modes, including a rear-wheel-drive mode with no DSC. In this 2WD mode, the all-new BMW M5 offers drivers the opportunity to experience BMW’s traditional rear-wheel drive characteristics.
    Under the hood of the all-new BMW M5 is the latest and most advanced version of the renowned 4.4-liter V8 engine featuring M TwinPower Turbo technology with an output increase from the previous generation of 40 hp and 53 lb-ft, this new engine develops 600 hp and 553 lb-ft of peak torque to promise explosive acceleration and formidable performance. The twin-turbo V8 unit propels the M5 via the new 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic and teams up with the M xDrive system to transfer all of the high-revving turbocharged engine’s might to the road, and allows a 0–60 mph acceleration run in a mere 3.2 seconds, making it the quickest and most agile to date.

    M TwinPower Turbo, M xDrive and the 8-speed M Steptronic transmission
    The all-new BMW M5 features a 4.4-liter V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology. The high-revving power unit in the all-new BMW M5 has received a thorough overhaul and delivers its exceptional output of 600 hp from 5,700 to 6,600 rpm, while the tremendous peak torque of 553 lb-ft is on tap from just 1,800 rpm and remains constant all the way up to 5,700 rpm. The engine characteristics can be changed at the push of a button from the basic Efficient setting to either Sport or Sport Plus, resulting in a more crisp response to movements of the accelerator.
    The M engineers have implemented a raft of enhancements to endow the twin-turbo V8 with its phenomenal performance capabilities. These include newly developed twin-scroll turbochargers now delivering 24.46 psi of relative boost pressure as well as a higher maximum injection pressure of 350 bar (up from 200 bar). This allows shorter injection times and improved atomization of the fuel for sharper engine response as well as more efficient mixture preparation. Improvements have also been made to the lubrication and cooling systems, including an oil pan with a small front sump and new indirect charge air cooling units, which are more effective than its predecessor despite being almost 20% smaller in size. The oil supply system uses a fully variable, map-controlled pump and has been designed for weekend escapades to the racetrack, where it can handle very high levels of longitudinal and lateral acceleration.
    The cross-bank exhaust manifolds for the all-new BMW M5 have also been modified to optimize the flow of energy from the exhaust gas to the turbine wheels of the two twin-scroll turbochargers ensuring the best possible gas-exchange cycle. By fitting a Helmholtz resonator between the two silencers of the dual exhaust system, the M engineers have reduced its weight by 11 lbs. The sound from the active flap-controlled exhaust system varies depending on the selected mode for the engine characteristics, while the M Sound Control button allows further acoustic customization.
    The twin-scroll twin-turbo V8’s power is channeled to the road via the newly developed M xDrive all-wheel-drive system. The rear-biased set-up ensures that the front wheels only come into play when the rear wheels are not able to transmit any more torque to the road and additional tractive force is required. The main hardware components of M xDrive are based on the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system and the Active M Differential technology. Central M specific driving dynamics control software precisely to orchestrate the various components, providing enhanced traction, agility and directional stability at all times.
    The reinforced drivetrain allows it to cope with the higher torque, the rear-biased configuration and the 2WD mode. While the transfer case intelligently splits the drive torque between the front and rear wheels, the Active M Differential is responsible for then distributing the drive flow between the rear wheels varying the locking effect as the situation demands. With M xDrive, stabilizing interventions from the DSC system are only required in extreme situations, enabling the engine’s tremendous power to be converted into propulsive force with virtually zero losses. The M xDrive system allows drivers to command the all-new BMW M5 with even greater precision and directional accuracy to respond sensitively and directly to the driver’s inputs, which in turn enable fewer steering corrections when driving at the limit.
    Drivers can configure M xDrive at any time to suit their needs. Even in the default setting with both DSC and 4WD activated, the all-new BMW M5 allows a certain amount of slip at the rear wheels when accelerating out of corners to produce the agility for which M models are renowned while remaining perfectly controllable at all times. The all-wheel drive’s traction helps to produce acceleration times that are worthy of super-sports cars: 0–60 mph in a breathtaking 3.2 seconds and 0–124 mph in just 11.1 seconds.
    Switching to the M Dynamic mode (MDM, 4WD Sport) gives additional boost to the car’s handling agility. In this mode, more drive torque is directed to the rear axle, while the amount of permissible rear wheel slip is increased. While doing so, the onset of oversteer is noticeable in good time and the linear increase of the sideslip angle means that the vehicle remains stable.
    The three modes available with the DSC system switched off have been configured keeping track driving in mind. The 4WD mode is set up for the greatest possible controllability and traction, and already offers plenty of scope for exploring the dynamic performance capabilities of the all-new BMW M5. The 4WD Sport mode, meanwhile, with its blend of steering precision, agile handling and reassuring traction, guarantees maximum enjoyment and consistent lap times. The pure rear-wheel-drive mode (2WD) has been designed with the experienced and highly skilled driver in mind. This opens up the same thrilling experience already offered by past generations of the M5.
    The new 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic has been strictly geared towards high-performance duty while the wide ratio spread helps to optimize fuel efficiency. The transmission has been engineered so the torque converter lock-up clutch fully engages once the car has pulled away, proving instantaneous response. Lightning-fast gear changes with optimal gear ratio spacing ensure that even the most demanding driver will appreciate its technological prowess. The driver can choose between fully automatic shifting in D mode, or opt for sequential gearshifts via the new short gear selector on the center console or the M shift paddles on the steering wheel.
    The transmission’s shift mapping can be modified using the Drivelogic rocker switch in the gear selector. Drivelogic mode 1 corresponds to efficient driving. Mode 2 lends itself to sporty driving with its shortened shift times. Drivelogic mode 3 is optimized for high-sporty driving on the track thanks to its extremely short shift times. Those preferring to shift gears manually can also execute multiple downshifts to the lowest available gear, for instance when braking into tight corners. With manual mode engaged, there are no automatic upshifts when the engine is revved to the limit either. A transmission oil cooler ensures flawless transmission operation even when the car is put through its paces on the track.
    Newly Developed chassis technology. A new benchmark in driving dynamics
    The goal of the team responsible for tuning the all-new BMW M5 chassis was to achieve unbeatable driving dynamics with maximum directional stability. As is usual for BMW M GmbH, the tuning took place in part on the company’s own race circuit at Miramas in the south of France, as well as on the world’s toughest test track, the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
    The precise, agile handling that drivers have come to expect from previous generations of the M5 has been optimized for the all-new car. Individual driver needs are met by the wide range of options for configuring the vehicle, including M xDrive, the 8-speed M Steptronic with Drivelogic, the M-specific Variable Damper Control (incl. three driving modes: Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus) with electronically controlled shock absorbers, and M Servotronic steering (incl. three driving modes: Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus). A top priority when tuning the chassis of the all-new BMW M5 was to achieve neutral steering behavior with linear build-up of transverse loads across the full range of lateral acceleration. Whatever the driving situation, the electromechanical M Servotronic steering delivers exactly the right amount of steering torque. This ensures that the all-new BMW M5 has accurate steering and always communicates clear feedback to the driver. What’s more, because of all of these systems the car is great for long-distance driving or touring along the city thanks to the low steering force required for maneuvering and parking.
    The familiar double-wishbone suspension from the front axle of the BMW 5 Series has been reworked from the ground up for the all-new BMW M5 with M xDrive. M engineers have redesigned every component to factor in M-specific kinematic and elastokinematic characteristics. Directional stability is greater than ever thanks to the increased track width. The five-link rear suspension has also been modified to meet M-specific requirements. Optimized firmer anti-roll bars and new toe links featuring stiffer rubber mounts help accommodate the increased demands on the driving dynamics and steering precision. Specially developed for the M5, the elastomer bearings on the rear axle mounts ensure that there is no delay in transferring chassis forces, which makes for direct handling. An additional steel X-brace and an aluminum transverse strut increase the stiffness of the chassis linkages at the rear axle, resulting in improved response. Additional chassis modifications not visible externally perform functions that are no less important. For example, an aluminum tower-to-bulkhead and tower-to-frontend strut braces enhance stiffness at the front of the car.
    The complete chassis and powertrain package put together by the BMW M engineers is so detailed that even experienced racers like former Formula One star and BMW works driver Timo Glock are impressed: “Thanks to M xDrive, the new BMW M5 goes beyond the precise, agile drive that we’ve come to expect – it also serves up a noticeable boost in traction and controllability, both in everyday situations and at the dynamic limit.”
    The tires fitted as standard on the all-new BMW M5 (275/40 R 19 at the front and 285/40 R 19 at the rear) have been specially homologated for this vehicle. They are mounted on five-double-spoke cast light-alloy wheels in polished Orbit Grey (front: 9.5 J x 19, rear: 10.5 J x 19). 20-inch seven-double-spoke wheels in black or polished black are available as an option (front: 275/35 R 20, at rear: 285/35 R 20). All wheels are ZR speed rated, making them suitable for the 189 mph top speed achieved with the available M Driver’s Package (155 mph standard).
    The all-new BMW M5 comes with M compound brakes fitted as standard. Being significantly lighter than conventional cast iron units, these have the distinct benefit of reducing unsprung mass. At the front, the braking force is applied to 15.55 x 1.41 [in] perforated, inner-vented brake discs by blue-painted 6-piston fixed calipers featuring the M logo. Single-piston floating caliper brakes see duty at the rear on 14.96 x 1.10 [in] perforated, inner-vented brake discs, with integrated parking brake.
    M carbon-ceramic brakes are also available as an option on the all-new BMW M5. These brakes are instantly recognizable from the gold-colored calipers with M logo 6-piston fixed calipers and 15.74 x 1.49 [in] ventilated brake discs at front; single-piston floating calipers and 14.96 x 1.10 [in] ventilated brake discs at rear, resulting in 50.7 lb reduction of unsprung and rotating masses. This offers many benefits, including improved driving dynamics and increased suspension comfort. More importantly, the M carbon-ceramic brakes provide even better braking performance than M compound brakes, as well as improved fade resistance and even higher thermal stability.
    Sporting M design with distinction. Form driven by function
    “The BMW M5 has always embodied the perfect blend of mature business sedan and high-performance components. So you can think of the BMW M5 as the world’s fastest-moving tailored suit.” These are the words chosen by Domagoj Dukec, Vice President of Design BMW i and BMW M, to sum up the brief for the all-new BMW M5. Like all the models to come out of BMW M GmbH HQ in Garching, its design is M-specific and driven by function. For example, the newly designed front bumper trim, with its larger air intakes, has the task of providing the cooling systems and brakes with the adequate supply of cooling air – even in rigorous use on the racetrack. The car has a wider track than its predecessor, and the front side panels (made from aluminum to reduce weight) bear the signature M gills.
    Also carved from aluminum is the hood, whose precise lines create an eye-catching sculpture and extend visually into the roof. For the first time in the BMW M5, the roof itself is made from extremely lightweight, high-strength carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP).
    The redesigned rear diffuser, side skirts, the M rear apron and M rear spoiler, play their part in giving the all-new BMW M5 its powerful sporting appearance, and the exterior mirrors have a dynamic, M-specific design. In another example of form following function, the hexagonal central air intake in the front end not only separates itself sculpturally from the side air intakes, it also incorporates the oil cooler.
    The interior focuses squarely on the driver for absolute control in all driving situations. At the same time, the BMW M5 offers space for up to four passengers, a large trunk and excellent ride comfort. As a high-performance sports car and business sedan in one, it blends the best of both worlds.
    The driver is at the heart of the action. Equipment without compromise
    When it comes to the equipment on board the all-new BMW M5, dynamic driving experience is king. The center-point is the driver’s seat, from where all switches and buttons can be operated with optimum ergonomic convenience. All of the car’s functions are located directly in the driver’s eye line. The large digital instrument cluster from the BMW 5 Series has an M-specific design and keeps the driver informed on the driving dynamic mode, M xDrive all-wheel-drive system setting and Drivelogic option currently engaged. Key elements for the sporty driver are the variable rpm pre-warning field and shift lights that show the best time to shift gears. This data can also be reflected into the M-specific Head-Up Display.
    Virtually all of the driving dynamic systems can be configured using the central touchscreen display, buttons on the center console or M sports steering wheel, and the central information display offers BMW Gesture control. The M5’s engine is brought to life by pressing the red starter button. Among the essential features for drivers wanting to customize the driving dynamics are the new two red-painted M1 and M2 buttons next to the gearshift paddles on the M multifunction steering wheel, which allow drivers to configure two individual set-ups. These include their choice of M xDrive, DSC, engine, transmission, damper and steering characteristics, as well as the appearance of M view in the Head-Up Display.
    The all-new BMW M5 is trimmed with Extended Merino leather as standard. The driver and front passenger settle into M Multifunction seats with electric adjustment, seat heating and electric adjustment for the seat depth, and pneumatic backrest width adjustment deliver optimum lateral support. The M Multifunction seats feature integral head restraints that provide even better support in the shoulder area, an illuminated M5 logo and extended functions. With their racing-style bucket shape and the thicker side bolsters of the seat surface and backrest, the M multifunction seats offer even greater lateral support. For the first time, the M5 is now also available with all the driver assistance systems featured in the new BMW 5 Series.
    The all-new BMW M5 is available in a variety of exterior colors, some of which are reserved exclusively for the M5. New additions to the spectrum include Marina Bay Blue Metallic, an intense shade of blue. Inside the car, exclusive aluminum applications with a carbon-structure provide a special sporting flourish.

    First come, first served is the motto as BMW M GmbH launches the all-new BMW M5 with the option of a “First Edition” special-edition model limited to a worldwide run of 400 examples with 50 units coming to the US.     The all-new BMW M5 First Edition has exclusive Frozen Dark Red Metallic paintwork and includes BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line trim with extended features. This means that the kidney grille, the M gills and the four tailpipes of the sports exhaust all come in high-gloss black.     Monterey Car Week has become a venue for certain automakers debut their wares, whether that is a concept or production model. BMW used the event to show off the Z4 Concept.
    The concept features the cues you would expect on a classic roadster such as the long hood, short rear end, and wheels pushed out to the corners. Little details such as the twin-kidney grilles slightly angled, long vents on the hood, and narrow taillights make for an interesting design. Move inside and things get somewhat weird. BMW's designers decided to go with a two-tone color palette. The driver's side is finished in black while the passenger side is finished in a copper color. The rest of the cabin looks like something you would find in a modern BMW.
    “The BMW Concept Z4 expresses the new BMW design language from all perspectives and in all details. From the dynamic- looking front to the striking flanks to the clean-cut tail end: a few lines and the subtle interplay between surfaces are enough to generate a sense of power and emotion,” said Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design in a statement.
    Expect to see BMW unveiling the production version sometime next year.

    The BMW Concept Z4.
    Freedom on four wheels. Woodcliff Lake, N.J. – August 17, 2017 … The BMW Group is using the Concours d’Elegance at Pebble Beach to present its exciting new take on a BMW roadster. Dynamic, progressive and an irresistible purveyor of thrills, the BMW Concept Z4 boasts lithe and compact proportions, a dynamic silhouette and an emotionally appealing use of forms. The attention-grabbing design study offers a look ahead to the series-production version of the car set to be unveiled over the course of next year.
    After an eighteen year hiatus, the ‘8 Series’ name returns to the BMW portfolio with the BMW Concept 8 Series shown on the Concept Lawn at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance this year. The BMW Concept 8 Series serves as a preview of a forthcoming BMW model – the new BMW 8 Series Coupe, slated for launch in 2018.
    A statement of unbridled driving pleasure.
    The sporty and progressive BMW Concept Z4 encapsulates the BMW Group’s vision of a modern roadster. “The BMW Concept Z4 expresses the new BMW design language from all perspectives and in all details. From the dynamic-looking front to the striking flanks to the clean-cut tail end: a few lines and the subtle interplay between surfaces are enough to generate a sense of power and emotion,” adds van Hooydonk.

    The BMW Concept Z4 adopts classical roadster design cues, such as a long wheelbase, a low-slung, stretched silhouette and a compact rear end, wraps them in a fresh, confident package and enriches them with the contemporary BMW design language. A shorter bonnet and crisp overhangs ensure the driver sits closer to the centre of the car than in previous BMW roadsters. This gives the new proportions a focused, sporty and agile feel. The outline of the car follows a distinct wedge shape, which fills the BMW Concept Z4 with dynamism before it even pulls away. The large domes stretching out rearwards from the cabin elegantly integrate the function of rollover bars and provide a sporting conclusion to the low-to-the-road silhouette at the rear.
    Reimagining the design language and surfaces.
    The clearly sculpted shark nose at the front end spawns dramatic surface contouring that extends the full length of the flanks. The new direction taken by BMW’s design language can be seen here in just a few precise lines that form clear surfaces, while the body’s volumes are powerfully sculpted. The surfaces and forms therefore create an extremely modern and emotionally engaging impression. The large Air Breathers rearwards of the front wheels act as the source of the flanks’ elaborately modelled surfaces (they appear to be shaped by the flow of air as it exits the Air Breathers). Light and shaded surfaces develop in a rising movement towards the rear, then twist to form muscular wheel arches and athletic volumes. All of which shines a bright stylistic spotlight on the car’s rear-wheel drive. The dramatic interplay of lines and surfaces underscores the wedge shape of the flanks and infuses them with even greater dynamism. And the low door sills, with their distinctive crease, makes the body appear closer to the road, emphasising the low-slung sensation when viewing the car from the side.
    Low and progressive – the front end.
    The design of the BMW Concept Z4’s front end is undeniably sporty in nature. The relationship between the low-set, broad kidney grille and the positioning of the headlights higher up sparks deliberate associations with the BMW Z8 and lends the BMW Concept Z4 a certain flamboyance. In place of the customary bars, the inside of the kidney grille features elaborately designed mesh, whose vertical orientation recalls the sporty, functional kidney design of early BMW roadsters such as the BMW 328 Mille Miglia. In a departure from the BMW norm, the Concept Z4 provides a vertical interpretation of the classical four-eyed headlight look, with two overlapping tubes on each side. The turn signal indicators point diagonally towards the kidneys from above and underline the dynamic flair of the front end. And the clamshell bonnet with stylised gill vents curves over the wheels, creating an intriguing and virtually seamless sweep over the front end as a whole. The front apron cuts a genuinely athletic figure with its sculptural design language. Its trio of large air intakes are a nod to the powerful engine further back and so carry the promise of a dynamic driving experience. The large carbon-fibre insert in the central air intakeis straight out of the motor sport playbook and champions the use of detail to emphasise the front end’s dynamic presence. Together, these design elements compose a fresh and memorable face for the Concept Z4 – one which pays a very modern and sporting tribute to the celebrated roadsters of BMW’s past.
    Athletic and eye-catching – the rear end.
    The design of the BMW Concept Z4 likewise references details and qualities from BMW’s rich roadster tradition and updates them for the years ahead. The wide and low design of the rear picks up the lines of the car’s flanks and massages them into a modern rear of beguiling clarity in terms of surfaces and styling elements. The powerfully flared wheel arches give the car broad haunches, which are emphasised by the slim, L-shaped rear lights and therefore further enhance the car’s sporting stance. Above the rear lights, the boot lid – complete with prominent spoiler – stretches across to the burly wheel arch extensions, sending out a message of power-infused agility. Below, large air outlets in the rear apron create their own dynamic impression. The carbon-fibre diffuser adds a sporty and exclusive flourish and signs off the rear end at its lowest point to the road.
    Exterior and interior in unison.
    The kinship between the interior and exterior of the BMW Concept Z4 is evident in both forms and colour scheme. The design language of the interior takes the powerful, three-dimensional character of the exterior and adds another voice to the dynamic chorus. Much of the interior adopts the colour of the car body, creating a clear visual link between the interior and exterior. Only a classy chrome trim strip provides separation.
    Maximum focus on the driving experience.
    At the same time, the interior serves to reinforce the total focus on the driving experience too. The driver’s seat as well as the door trim panels, instrument panel and centre stack that encircle the driver are finished entirely in black, meaning that they stand out prominently from the coordinated orange shades of the exterior and the rest of the interior. Together they form a clearly defined area that wraps around the driver like a capsule, producing a very sporty sensation. This creates a pure-of-purpose driving environment with a pronounced “cone of vision”, where the steering wheel as well as the surrounding black surfaces appear to be surging forward and, in so doing, accentuate the cabin’s powerful driver focus.
    The instrument cluster and central information display form a high-quality cluster ofscreens that are integrated into the driver’s cockpit to flawless ergonomic effect. The two displays are now positioned at almost the same height and in close proximity to one another, which gives the impression of a single, cohesive unit. They work together to deliver the right information at the right time. The driver can choose which elements they wish to call up (via touch command) from the content available in the information display–route guidance, playlists or other infotainment features. Above the instrument cluster, the Head-Up Display presents the key driving information within the driver’s direct field of view.
    Prominent surfacing.
    Emerging from the driver’s side of the cabin is a sporty instrument panel of inherent lightness. The clever arrangement of surfaces and edging breaks up the considerable volumes and engenders the impression of a powerfully chiselled muscle. The clear wraparound design from the doors to the instrument panel enhances the sporty, cocooned feeling in both seats.
    In keeping with the focus on the essentials, all the controls are grouped into “function islands”. Nothing distracts from the driving experience. Trim elements inside the cabin are likewise minimalist in nature. Indeed, it is instead the classy materials, carefully applied polished chrome accents and swish, hexagonal laser-cut motifs in the seats that do most to create the interior’s exclusive ambience.     We might see a 1-Series sedan and some more crossovers

    A new report from Automotive News says BMW could be expanding their lineup of vehicles in both directions.
    On the low end is the 1-Series sedan. Already on sale in China, the model could be coming to U.S. in early 2019 according to a source. Previously, BMW said their small front-wheel drive sedan would not be sold in the U.S. But with Mercedes-Benz bringing the A-Class sedan to U.S. next year, this may have cause BMW to change their minds. A quick refresher, the 1-Series sedan is a front-wheel drive model.
    Moving over to the high-end, BMW is readying the 8-Series coupe to debut late next year. They have already shown a concept to give us an idea of what it may look like (to our eyes, it reminds us slightly of the Lexus LC coupe). It will be based on the 7-Series sedan, complete with the CLAR architecture. A convertible and Gran Coupe (4-door coupe) will be introduced at a later date. What will this mean for the 6-Series? Aside from the new 6-series Gran Turismo, expect the rest of the 6-Series family to fade away in the coming years.

    The X2 will go on sale sometime in the first quarter of 2018. It will be based on the X1 and feature coupe-like styling. BMW's 7-Seat X7 will debut next month at the Frankfurt Motor Show, but will not arrive to the U.S. until 2019.  A new 3-Series will go on sale before the end of 2018 and use BMW's CLAR architecture.     Key Example: 2-Series will not feature a manual transmission option for the U.S.

    BMW has plans on streamlining its production process and cutting down on the number of variants to help get more money into R&D. According to Reuters, BMW is ramping up development on electrics, autonomous vehicles, and new powertrains to meet stricter emission standards. Nicolas Peter, BMW's finance chief said the company spent 5.16 billion euros (about $5.91 billion) or 5.5 percent of revenue on R&D in 2016.
    "The next three years will be between 5.5 percent and 6 percent," said Peter.
    With the increase in R&D costs, BMW is looking everywhere to cut. Unfortunately, one of the items being cut is the manual transmission option for U.S.-spec 2-Series to cut certification costs. Over in Europe, BMW has been reducing the number of 5-Series models with the option of a manual. Peter also mentioned that there will be a reduction in the number of engines on offer.
    "In the 5 series we have four diesel engines on offer. I would not bet on there being four diesel engines on offer in the next generation vehicle."

    We're not sure about this rumor for one key reason

    It is no secret that German automakers are busy developing vehicles to challenge the Tesla Model S and X. But there has been barely a peep about something to take on the Model 3. But that is changing according to a report from Germany’s Handelsblatt.
    Sources at BMW tell the publication that the company will be showing off a 3-Series electric at the Frankfurt Motor Show later this year. The model is said to have a range of 248 miles (400 km) and will directly compete against the upcoming Model 3. BMW declined to comment on this report.
    The report doesn't say if this new electric will be based on the current or next 3-Series. Our hunch is that it will be the next-generation as it will be making its debut sometime next year. The model that could be shown at Frankfurt could be a concept to give us some idea of what BMW has planned.
    Nevertheless, we will be keeping a close watch on this story.

    Yes, it is all new.

    BMW is very proud of their Spartanburg, South Carolina plant; currently home to the X3, X4, X5, and X6 crossovers. So it comes as no surprise that company chose Spartanburg to debut the third-generation X3 crossover.
    Styling-wise, the 2018 X3 is an evolution of the current model. There are some changes to help set the new X3 apart from the old model such as a more aggressive front bumper, new take on the kidney grille, slimmer taillights, and twin exhaust tips. The wheelbase has been extended by 2.2-inches, helping balance out the X3's proportions.
    The interior is a mix of the current X3 and new 5-Series. There is still a driver-focused dash layout with the angled center stack. The control layout for the climate control and radio is similar to what you will find in the recently redesigned 5-Series. An optional 10.25-inch screen sits on top of the dash and comes with the latest version of BMW's iDrive system.
    There are two engines available for the X3; a turbocharged 2.0L inline-four with 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque (xDrive30i) and a turbocharged 3.0L inline with 355 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque (M40i). Both will come paired with an eight-speed automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive. The M40i gets some other performance goodies such larger brakes, retuned suspension, dual-mode exhaust, and a launch mode.
    BMW is keeping quiet on pricing but does say it will go on sale this November.

    The 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder gasoline engine in the all-new BMW X3 xDrive30i has an output of 248 hp (8 hp more than the outgoing BMW X3 xDrive28i). Maximum torque has of 258 lb-ft is on tap between just 1,450 and 4,800 rpm. The all-new BMW X3 xDrive30i reaches 60 mph from rest in 6.0 seconds and has a top speed of 130 mph

    All models come standard with an 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission with shift paddles. In the BMW X3 xDrive30i, the transmission tuning is matched to the engine’s specific performance characteristics, while the X3 M40i model’s transmission has been tuned to M Performance specifications. The transmission is designed to be even more efficient, helping to lower fuel consumption and emissions.

    Detecting accidents before they happen.
    The standard pre-crash accident detection system Active Protection enhances passive safety by detecting potential accident situations as they arise. If a collision risk is detected, the system automatically triggers a variety of occupant protection measures. The driver’s and front passenger’s belt tensioners are activated, and the windows and Panoramic moonroof are closed. Following a collision, Active Protection automatically brings the vehicle to a standstill. The Frontal Collision Warning function detects an imminent risk of collision with preceding vehicles, and prepares the vehicle systems for a possible impact from vehicles behind.

    First launched with the BMW 5 Series, the new On-Street Parking Information (OSPI) service available in select cities helps alleviate the problem of vehicles searching for parking spaces – which accounts for a large part of traffic congestion in city centers. OSPI works in a similar way to the Advanced Real Time Traffic Information System, using historical and current data to draw conclusions regarding the availability of on-street parking spaces in specific zones or in a particular part of town. The probability of on street parking availability is shown on the Navigation Professional map, allowing the driver to minimize the need to continually circle the block in search of a spot.
    The options list likewise includes a WiFi hotspot offering a high-speed internet connection (LTE) for up to ten mobile devices. Apple CarPlay is also available and can be used wirelessly in the all-new BMW X3. The driver can seamlessly switch between BMW and Apple CarPlay via the iDrive controller or touchscreen interface if equipped.

The Driving Assistant Plus Package offers additional comfort features: Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Active Lane Keeping Assistant with Side Collision Avoidance, Traffic Jam Assistant, Evasion Aid & Cross Traffic alert front and rear.
    The optional Head-Up Display allows the most important driving-related information to be projected directly into the driver’s field of vision. The 75 percent larger Head-Up Display in the all-new BMW X3 is unrivalled in its segment for graphics, resolution and display options. Another unique feature that the all-new BMW X3 boasts over its competitors is the Remote 3D View function, which can be used to beam a 360 degree, three-dimensional view of the car’s immediate vicinity directly to a smartphone through the BMW Connected App.

    At least it's better looking than the 5-Series GT

    The BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo answered a question that no one outside of BMW was asking. It wasn't a pleasing vehicle to look at which affected sales. Still, BMW believes in the Gran Turismo and has decided to make the successor part of the 6-Series family. Thus, the 2018 BMW 6-Series GT.
    We're still not sold on the whole Gran Turismo idea BMW is trying to put out there, but we have to admit the 6-Series GT is a major improvement in terms of looks. BMW's designers took the design of the 3-Series GT and made it larger to create this model. Compared to the 5-Series GT, the 6-Series GT is about 4-inches longer in overall length and an inch shorter in overall height. The interior is the same as the new 5-Series which isn't a bad thing as it comes with a center stack oriented to the driver, 10.25-inch screen featuring the latest version of BMW's iDrive, and leather upholstery. Rear passengers will enjoy the abundance of rear legroom on offer thanks to the longer length of the vehicle.
    The U.S. will only get one engine - a 3.0L twin-turbo inline-six producing 335 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic. BMW quotes a 0-60 mph time of 5.1 seconds - significantly quicker than the 535i's time of 6.1 seconds. Some of this improvement can be directed at BMW dropping around 221 pounds out of the 6-Series GT.
    The 6-Series GT will also be the first BMW model to introduce Active Driving Assistant - a new name for the brand's suite of active safety features. This includes blind spot monitoring, front collision warning. lane departure warning, pedestrian detection, and rear cross-traffic alert. Adaptive cruise control, front cross-traffic alert, and lane keep assist are available through an option package.
    The 6-Series GT arrives in BMW showrooms this fall with a starting price of $70,695.

    Dynamically stretched proportions.
    The all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo showcases dynamically stretched proportions. In combination with a roofline that flows deep into the rear end, the proportions ensure an elegantly sporty appearance. Thanks to optimization of the cabin’s packaging, the interior offers ample rear headroom (38.5 inches). Among the other characteristic features of the all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo are its long trunk, the set-back positioning of the cabin, wheelbase of 120.9 inches, doors with frameless windows, and a slim window graphic that leads into a more vertical interpretation of the signature BMW “Hofmeister kink”.
     
    The front end: distinctive, eye-catching and powerful.
    The large BMW kidney grille underlines the muscular presence of the front end. The headlight housings extend all the way to the kidneys, creating a continuous band that accentuates the car’s width.
     
    The standard Icon Adaptive Full LED Headlights feature hexagonal LED tubes for the daytime running lights that extend to meet the kidney grille, reinforcing the broad and dynamic presence of the front end.
     
    The flanks: flowing lines, precise surfaces.
    When the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo is viewed from the side, its elongated proportions and precise surface design catch the eye. A single crease in the upper section of the side surfaces sends light rushing to this section of the body. Above the powerfully flared wheel arches, a second horizontal line worked smoothly into the surface, generates an effective interchange between light and shadow, which lends the car extra lightness and elegance. Its ground clearance is emphasized by the shaded surfaces above the side skirts. The Air Breathers and side skirts form a single unit and team up with another crease in the surface work to enhance the stretched feel of the silhouette.
     
    The heavily raked A-pillars of the all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo are linked with the roofline reaching its highest point at the top of the B-pillar, flowing like a coupe’s into the rear. The distinctive elegance of the silhouette is also accentuated by the sweeping side window graphic, which is no longer broken up by an extra window guide strip through the rear passenger door windows.
     
    The rear end: width enhances sporting presence, sculptural light design.
    Horizontal lines, sharp edges and heavily tapering surfaces help to magnify the width of the rear and therefore the sporting stature of the all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo. It is an impression strengthened by the slim rear window and rear lights positioned well to the outside. In addition to the customary BMW L-shape, the light units also display a unique three-dimensional surface design. The taillight covers over the LED units to add a bold and classy accent with their attractively sculpted design.
     
    Aerodynamically optimized – from Active Kidney Grille to the active rear spoiler.
    The low-slung silhouette of the all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo also benefits its aerodynamic efficiency, which has been improved with a host of other measures. BMW’s Active Kidney Grille system opens moveable slats behind the vertical, fixed kidney grille slats when more cooling air is required, but otherwise keeps them closed to optimize aerodynamic efficiency. The underbody section is almost fully enclosed. Air Curtains in the lower air intake at the front of the car and Air Breathers behind of the front wheels reduce turbulence in and around the wheel arches all improving aerodynamic efficiency. The active rear spoiler, which automatically extends when the car exceeds 75 mph and retracts again when it slows below 50 mph, helps to reduce lift and improve the drag coefficient (Cd).
     
    A total of 12 colors, wheels in 19-inch, 20-inch and 21-inch sizes.
    Two non-metallic and 10 metallic color shades are available for the all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo. Customers can choose from a total of 3 different light-alloy wheels (19-inch and 20-inch). The Original BMW Accessories range also includes 21-inch light-alloy rims.
     
    Distinctive Looks: standard Sport design, available Luxury Package.
    The standard Sport design shines the spotlight on the car’s dynamic character and stands out with numerous trim elements in high-gloss black and 19-inch V-Spoke light-alloy wheels.     The all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo comes standard with Dakota leather upholstery, which can be specified in a range of different colors. The optional Nappa leather with decorative quilting pattern is available in three colors – Ivory White, Black and Mocha.
    Precisely formed, seamlessly fitting surfaces and meticulously incorporated chrome trim elements highlight the exclusive character of the interior.     Rear compartment offers luxurious comfort over long distances.
    The rear compartment of the all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo has three full-size seats with ample legroom and headroom. LATCH attachment points in the outer seats make it easy to secure the child seats in place. The newly designed rear seat bench helps to improve long-distance traveling comfort and optimize soundproofing. Indeed, acoustic comfort has been enhanced by soundproofing in the roof, doors and rear seat backrests.
     
    Multi-contour seats, active seat ventilation and a massage function can be ordered for the driver and front passenger. The optional electrically adjustable comfort seats for the rear passengers feature powered adjustment of the backrest angle at the touch of a button.
     
    Flexible-use space and modern functionality.
    The door pockets for all the seats offer extra storage room for travel items such as regular sized bottles. In the front cabin, there are an additional two cupholders, a roomy glove compartment and a large compartment under the armrest of the center console. The folding center armrest in the rear offers two cupholders.
     
    The large, variable-use interior and contemporary functionality of the all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo highlights its qualities when it comes to accommodating luggage. A single-piece tailgate opens and closes electrically as standard, with Comfort Access as standard equipment, this process can be initiated hands-free with a gentle forward-backward kicking motion of the foot underneath the center of the rear bumper.
     
    The load sill has been lowered by more than 2 inches. The 40 : 20 : 40 split rear seat backrest can be folded down not only from the passenger compartment, but also by means of electric remote release using a button in the trunk. This expands the available storage space to 65 ft3. The rigid two-section luggage cover can be stored away in a compartment underneath the trunk floor.
     
    The standard panoramic moonroof features a two-section glass surface with an overall length of 41.9 inches and a width of 35.4 inches. The two-layer roller-type cover made from acoustically optimized material, runs along side-mounted rails, helps to effectively soundproof the cabin.
     
    The all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo is equipped with automatic climate control, which allows individual control of the temperature and ventilation intensity for the driver and front passenger. The standard Extended Ambient lighting provides particularly harmonious interior illumination using LED units in the instrument panel and doors. The color and brightness of the light can be configured as desired.     The 3.0-liter 6-cylinder inline gasoline engine under the hood of the all-new BMW 640i xDrive Gran Turismo generates maximum output of 335 hp and puts peak torque of 332 lb-ft on tap between 1,380 and 5,200 rpm provide a 5.1 seconds sprint from 0-60 mph.
     
    Intelligent networking optimizes dynamics and efficiency.
    With the help of intelligent networking, the 8-speed Steptronic transmission can adapt its shift strategy to the current driving situation. Utilizing the map database from the standard Navigation system Professional, the intelligent transmission management takes its cues from the upcoming route. For example, on the basis of navigation data it can perform an early downshift when approaching an intersection, in order to take full advantage of the engine braking effect. It also allows unnecessary gear changes to be prevented when taking two bends in quick succession. If ECO PRO mode is selected using the Driving Dynamics Control switch, the coasting function decouples the powertrain whenever the driver lifts off the accelerator between 30 – 100 mph.
     
    Intelligent networking also improves the efficiency-boosting effect of the Auto Start Stop function. The control unit uses data from the navigation system and the driver assistance systems’ cameras and radar sensors to prevent the engine being switched off at moments where it would be counterproductive for efficiency – for example when pausing briefly at intersections or traffic circles.
     
    Cutting-edge chassis technology, rear-axle air suspension as standard.
    Thanks to a rigorous round of chassis development, the all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo offers lively agility and, at the same time, unbeatable ride quality. The double-wishbone front suspension and five-link rear suspension underpin a smooth balance between dynamic sharpness and comfort. The front suspension decouples the wheel location and damping functions to avoid compromising comfort under high lateral acceleration, allowing the steering to remain as unaffected as possible by bumps in the road.
     
    The rear suspension uses light-metal components in the five-link rear suspension, and optimized elastokinematics ensure precise wheel location and excellent directional stability. The large mounting and supporting system also plays an important part in ensuring good acoustic insulation between the powertrain and suspension. Standard specification includes rear-axle air suspension with automatic self-levelling, which maintains a constant ride height regardless of driving situation or payload, while at the same time controlling vibrations.
     
    The electromechanical steering system with standard Servotronic function (for speed-sensitive power assistance) offers unbeatable precision in dynamic cornering situations and high levels of comfort when maneuvering in tight spots such as parking lots. The optional Integral Active Steering is likewise electromechanical. Controlled steering of the rear wheels allows it to provide extra agility when cornering, sure-footed responses when changing lanes and easy maneuverability around town.
     
    Adaptive suspension and Active Roll Stabilization deliver ride comfort and sporty performance.
    The Dynamic Handling Package offers an extra dose of sportiness. It complements Dynamic Damper Control and the two-axle air suspension with Active Roll Stabilization and Integral Active Steering.
     
    Adaptive suspension with Dynamic Damper Control and two-axle air suspension uses electronically controlled dampers to improve ride and suspension comfort while at the same time sharpen the car’s dynamics. An electrically powered compressor with pressure reservoir supplies the suspension with air and because the air supply is controlled individually for each wheel, it is even possible to compensate for an unevenly distributed load. The two-axle air suspension enables owners to set the car’s ride height manually. Ground clearance can be raised by 0.78 inches at the touch of a button for driving on rough ground or up steep ramps. Once the driver accelerates beyond 22 mph, the self-levelling system automatically reverts to the standard setting. A 0.39 inch drop in ride height can be initiated by pressing a button. This happens automatically at speeds over 75 mph and when SPORT mode is selected using the Driving Dynamic Control switch.
     
    Active Roll Stabilization works using electric swivel motors and takes fast, precise action to counteract body roll during dynamic cornering, while also improving comfort in straight-line driving by actively countering bump disturbances affecting only one side of the car.
     
    Driving Dynamics Control switch with ADAPTIVE and COMFORT+ mode.
    As well as ECO PRO mode, the standard Driving Dynamics Control toggle switch is also used to activate the COMFORT and SPORT settings. These different modes, selected at the press of a button, modify the accelerator and steering mapping, the shift characteristics of the Steptronic transmission and the responses of the electronic dampers, if specified. Choosing the Dynamic Handling Package also adds the COMFORT+ and ADAPTIVE modes. These allow drivers to select a particularly comfort-biased set-up or one that responds automatically to their driving style. In ADAPTIVE mode, navigation data from the Navigation system Professional is used to proactively adjust the car’s responses when approaching intersections or curves.
     
    BMW EfficientLightweight technology allows for optimized weight distribution and low body weight.
    Intelligent lightweight construction and the increased use of aluminum and high-strength steels for body and chassis components has optimized the weight of the all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo. The doors, the trunk and the car’s tailgate are made from aluminum. The engine cross-member, spring struts and rear trailing arms are among the chassis components made from lightweight metal. Reducing unsprung mass in the wheels and brakes make the all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo even more agile.
     
    A steel/aluminum compound construction, galvanized, hot and cold-formed steel plates with a zinc/magnesium coating are all used to improve stiffness and passive safety, and reduce weight. Among the latest innovations in manufacturing technology registered under the BMW EfficientLightweight banner are a laser welding technique for the aluminum door shells and glass-fiber reinforced plastic acoustic shielding for the inner door paneling.
     
    Controls and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems.
    At the heart of the display and control concept in the all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo is the iDrive 6.0 system. In addition to the Touch Controller on the center console and the direct menu control and favorites buttons, the system also comprises a new version of the Control Display. The high-resolution unit now takes the form of a freestanding 10.25?inch touchscreen, while intuitive touch control is facilitated by the tile-style menu layout with live content.
     
    The Intelligent voice control system has undergone improvement and now also responds to natural voice inputs. The available BMW Gesture Control can be used in the all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo too, allowing certain functions to be operated with simple movements of the hand or fingers, which are registered by a 3D sensor in the center console and translated into the relevant commands. The latest generation BMW Head-Up Display, whose projection area has been increased in size by 75 percent reflects driving-related information onto the windshield in full color and with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels.

    The BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo is the first BMW with a standard Active Driving Assistant. This system brings a multitude of driving assistant functions made possible through the use of cameras, radars, and ultrasonic sensors that monitor the vehicle’s surroundings. The Active Driving Assistant includes Active Blind Spot Detection, Lane Departure Warning, Daytime Pedestrian Protection, Frontal Collision Warning w/City Collision Mitigation, Speed Limit Info, and Cross-traffic alert rear. The optional Driving Assistant Plus Package also adds Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Active Lane Keeping Assistant with Side Collision Avoidance, Traffic Jam Assistant, Evasion Aid and Cross-traffic alert front.
     
    The latest generation ACC with Stop & Go is operational in a speed range from 0 – 130 mph and is capable of braking the vehicle to a standstill. If the vehicle has been placed into standby mode by pushing the resume button on the steering wheel, the all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo can automatically start moving again up to 30 seconds after coming to a full-stop, relieving stress on the driver considerably, particularly when driving in stop-start traffic. The system’s sensors can now register two vehicles ahead providing a smoother operation.

    The Active Lane Keeping Assistant and Traffic Jam Assistant – also active at speeds between 0 and 130 mph – represent another step towards semi-automated driving. It uses road markings and the vehicles driving ahead as a means of orientation and works with the driver to help keep the vehicle in the detected lane with steering assistance. The system designed as a hands-on system, provides up to 50 seconds of hands-off time steering support. A sensitive hands-on-wheel detection recognizes contact even when only a few fingers briefly touch the wheel.
     
    The latest generation Active Blind Spot Detection system now ranges from approximately 15 – 130 mph and Lane Departure Warning, which operates from approximately 40 – 130 mph. Lane Departure Warning, alerts the driver if the vehicle is straying out of its lane unintentionally by causing the steering wheel to vibrate. Active Blind Spot Detection monitors maneuvers when changing into a different lane and, if a risk of collision is detected, activates a visual signal in the side-view mirror and vibrates the steering wheel, encouraging the driver to steer the vehicle back into its original lane. Vehicles equipped with the available Active Driving Assistant Plus additionally include Active Lane Keeping Assistant with Side Collision Avoidance and Evasion Aid, which assist the driver with corrective steering. The Side Collision Avoidance system (range approximately 40 – 130 mph) provides corrective steering intervention in situations where a side collision is imminent. In addition, Lane Departure Warning and Active Blind Spot Detection are also supported by the Active Lane Keeping Assistant through corrective steering intervention as part of the warning concept. Evasion Aid assists if a quick lane change is required at speeds between 25 – 100 mph, for example when the vehicle in front brakes aggressively, the evasion aid supports the necessary evasive steering action initiated by the driver. Corrective steering support during an evasive maneuver results in less vehicle instability, assisted by Dynamic Stability Control (DSC). While executing the maneuver, the evasion aid also uses information from the vehicle’s sensor systems to check how much unobstructed space is available around the vehicle. At speeds over 100 mph, the system no longer provides actual steering support and instead focuses on maximizing vehicle stability.
     
    Intelligent systems offer a clearer view and warn of dangers.
    Numerous other systems are designed to help drivers when maneuvering and parking as well as in driving situations with an obstructed view. The all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo is equipped as standard with Park Distance Control (PDC), which includes sensors at the front and rear, and a Rear-view camera. The available Surround View Camera system w/3D View can display a 3D image of the vehicle and its immediate surroundings from multiple perspectives in the Control Display.     Automatic parking: Parking Assistant, Remote Control Parking.
    The all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo’s Parking Assistant enables the automatic selection and use of parallel, perpendicular and angled parking spaces. Suitable spaces are detected with the help of ultrasonic sensors when driving past them. The system then takes care of all the acceleration, braking, steering and gear changes required to maneuver into the space.
     
    The BMW Remote Control Parking feature offers the ultimate in convenience when it comes to parking the car. The function is supervised by the driver who is able to initiate the required maneuver to move forwards into narrow parking spots or back out of them again from outside the vehicle using the BMW Display Key. All acceleration and braking actions are monitored and controlled by the Park Distance Control (PDC), the Parking Assistant and the Surround View sensors and cameras. The engine is started and switched off by remote control with the BMW Display Key.

    BMW Connected becomes an integral part of a digital lifestyle.
    BMW Connected personalized services can be used on the Apple iPhone or Apple Watch, for instance, or on smartphones and smartwatches running the Android operating system. This turns the personal mobility assistant into a seamlessly integrated component of the driver’s digital life, available anytime and anywhere.
     
    With BMW Connected, the mobility experience is always with you. Agenda-related information – such as the appointments and addresses contained in calendar entries are detected and taken into account when computing the route for your trips. The app then calculates the ideal departure time based on the latest traffic information and notifies the driver accordingly with a message on their smartphone or smartwatch. When the driver starts their car, which is also connected to the Open Mobility Cloud, its navigation system can access the route directly. BMW Connected is also an adaptive system that is capable of automatically learning and storing places that are regularly visited and personal mobility patterns.
     
    Infotainment, convenience and safety broaden their reach.
    The standard built-in SIM card also allows drivers of the all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo to use Intelligent Emergency Call with automatic locating and accident severity detection. With the new BMW Teleservice Accident Assistance, the vehicle now also detects low-speed collisions below the threshold for airbag deployment. The driver receives a message in the iDrive display offering to contact the BMW Accident Assistance service directly. A push of a button is all it takes to obtain professional support from the BMW Accident Assistance team, who can also put the customer in touch with a BMW Service Partner if necessary.
     
    Navigation updates over the air, hazard warnings based on car-to-car communication, Advanced Real Time Traffic Information, On-Street Parking Information.
    The latest generation of the Navigation system Professional boasts quicker start-up, even faster route calculation and optimized 3D rendering of urban map graphics. Thanks to the automatic regional map updates, included in the first four years, the navigation data is updated at regular intervals over the air using the vehicles mobile connection. Through crowd-sourcing, the vehicle also transmits data on the speed limits detected by the Speed Limit Info system to the BMW backend, from where the on-board navigation map can be updated at any time.
     
    Car-to-car communication is now also employed within the inter-connected BMW fleet to provide advance warning of hazardous traffic situations. Information on any detected hazards presented by an accident, a broken-down vehicle, dense fog, heavy rain or black ice, for example, is also relayed to the BMW backend from where it is imported into the navigation system of both the driver’s car and other BMWs in the vicinity.
     
    The unique On-Street Parking Information service helps drivers find available street parking space. This function is integrated into the navigation system map in a similar way to Advanced Real Time Traffic, and by using intelligent connectivity it displays the likelihood of available roadside parking spaces based on historical and real-time data.
    Apple CarPlay available in the car.
    Apple CarPlay can be used wirelessly in the all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo. The driver can seamlessly switch between BMW and Apple CarPlay via the iDrive controller or touch screen interface.
     
    Permanently connected – with the Display Key and Remote 3D View.
    The BMW Display Key, available exclusively with Remote Control Parking, allows drivers to keep in contact with their BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo around the clock. Besides fuel level and service-related information, the color display can also indicate whether the car’s doors, windows and panoramic glass sunroof are closed. Meanwhile, with the BMW Connected App, the Remote 3D View function shows drivers a three-dimensional live image of their vehicle and its immediate vicinity, as generated by the Surround View camera system, directly onto their smartphone screen.

    More crossovers are incoming for BMW

    Within the next two years, BMW's crossover lineup will undergo a massive change with two key models undergoing a redesign and two new models joining the family. Australian outlet Motoring has learned some key details about the models in question and possible debuts.
    X2: Think X1 in a sleeker package. Previewed last year at the Paris Motor Show, the X2 will come with a range of three and four-cylinder engines. Drivetrain choices will include front or all-wheel drive. It is expected to launch sometime early next year. X3: One of BMW's most popular models, the next-generation model is expected to go on sale in Europe sometime later this year with other markets to follow. It will use the CLAR (Cluster Architecture) platform that underpins the 5 and 7-Series. Expect a range of four and six-cylinder engines. X5: The X5 is a big seller in key markets and BMW has reportedly fast-tracked the replacement to go into production beginning in late 2018. It will also use the CLAR platform. X7: BMW's new flagship SUV and challenger to the likes of Mercedes' GLS. It will also use the CLAR platform and feature a range of engines including six, eight, and even a V12 option.     The 3-Series GT lives? An EV?!

    BMW is working on a number of electric vehicles that will be coming out in the coming years, including a replacement for the 3-Series GT.
    We reported back in January that the 3-Series GT would be cut from BMW's lineup possibly due to poor sales (we didn't fully buy the reason of 3-Series GT overlapping the 4-Series Gran Coupe and causing confusion for buyers). But a new report from Autocar says the 3-Series GT will live on as a 4-Series model. 
    Due in 2019, the 4-Series GT will replace both 3-Series GT and 4-Series Gran Coupe - the latter according to report has been a slow-selling model. There is a dispute to this claim as Motor1 reported last month the Gran Coupe was the most popular variant of the 4-Series, making up 54 percent of global sales. Gas and diesel models will be available at launch, with an electric version aimed at Tesla's Model 3 following a year later.
    BMW has some ambitious targets for the 4-Series GT EV. Performance is expected to be similar to the quickest 3-Series GT, the 335d - 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph. Range is reportedly is said to be around 311 miles.
    There is debate on the powertrain layout for the 4-Series GT EV. BMW could go with either a single electric motor or a dual-motor setup that would provide all-wheel drive capability. To meet the 311 mile range, BMW is estimating needing a 90-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. But as the report says, it could drop to 70-kWh battery due to advances in cell performance and energy density.

    How come BMW didn't tell anyone about this?!

    Usually, an automaker will announce they are ending production of a certain model. BMW didn't do that when it stopped production of the 6-Series coupe back in February.
    Road & Track got confirmation about this change from a BMW spokesperson. No reason was given as to why production of the coupe ended, but it is a safe bet that low sales played a role in this decision.
    This only adds fuel to the fire about reports that BMW is working on an 8-Series coupe. Our last report back in October said the company was planning to launch the 8-Series in late 2018 with the coupe. A convertible and V12 would follow sometime thereafter. Because of this, the 6-Series coupe and convertible would not be replaced.

    BMW still believes in diesel for the U.S.

    Despite the mess and tepid reception given to diesel models in the U.S. due to Volkswagen emission scandal, there are still some automakers who believe in it. 
    A BMW spokesperson has confirmed to Car and Driver that diesel variant of the new 5-Series would be arriving in the U.S., although no timeframe was given. The model will be named the 540d. Car and Driver believe the model will be powered by the 3.0L inline-six turbodiesel found in the European-market 530d producing 262 horsepower and 457 pound-feet of torque. The 540d possibly means our version will produce slightly more power.

    Time is ticking for manual and dual-clutch transmissions

    BMW's vice-president of sales and marketing for the M division, Peter Quintus believes that manual and dual-clutch transmissions will be going the way of the dodo bird performance vehicles.
    According to Drive, Qunitus has been banging the drum on the demise of manual transmissions for a bit. The reason isn't due to emissions but comes down them not being able to handle engines with loads of torque - saying 600Nm of torque (about 442 lb-ft). When asked about using a manual transmission from the U.S. that is able to handle all of this torque, Qunitus said the company found them to be "heavy and the shift quality was awful."
    The admission of Dual-clutch transmissions not long for this world is bit surprising as more manufacturers are beginning to install them into their performance vehicles as they would deliver fast shifts. That is changing with automatics as new technologies help them shift as fast as DCTs.
    "We are now seeing automatic transmissions with nine and even 10 speeds, so there's a lot of technology in modern automatics," said Quintus.
    "The DCT once had two advantages: it was light and its shift speeds were higher. Now, a lot of that shift-time advantage has disappeared as automatics get better and smarter."

    Arriving soon at your nearest BMW dealer: the 2017 diesel lineup

    BMW has been in a holding pattern in terms of producing diesel vehicles for the U.S. as they were awaiting approval from the EPA retesting diesel vehicles. Soon, 2017 model year diesel vehicles will be rolling off BMW's assembly lines and heading off to the U.S.
    "Diesel models will be going into production shortly at our manufacturing plants," said Rebecca K. Kiehne, product & technology spokesperson at BMW of North America to Green Car Reports.
    As we reported back in October, the EPA was holding back the certifications on a number of diesel vehicles as they subjecting them to new tests to uncover possible cheating - thanks Volkswagen. In our report, BMW said they would not start production of the 3-Series and X3 diesel models until the end of the year. Production of the X5 diesel would begin in January. 
    The production restart of BMW's diesels comes at an interesting time. The EPA is currently investigating the 3.0L EcoDiesel used in the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ram 1500 for possible violations of the clean air act. Over at Volkswagen, the board has given the ok for the $4.3 billion settlement with the Department of Justice over the diesel emission scandal.

    No more 3-Series GT in a couple of years?

    When the next-generation BMW 3-Series comes out in a couple of years, there could be a variant missing.
    BMWBlog has learned from a source that the 3-Series Gran Turismo (GT) is on the chopping block. The reason is that the 3-Series GT overlaps with the 4-Series Gran Coupe and it would make sense to focus one in the future. We're not sure if many BMW customers are cross-shopping a hatchback with a four-door coupe. We're thinking that the GT didn't meet BMW's sales expectations which is possibly why it could be getting the axe.
    The next 3-Series is expected to debut in 2018 with sales beginning towards the end of year.

    Two new BMWs arrive in the U.S. in the spring

    BMW is covering the efficiency and performance bases of the new 5-Series with two new models.
    On the efficiency front, there is the 2018 530e iPerfomance. This is a plug-in hybrid with a 2.0L turbo-four paired with an electric motor and a 9.2-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Preliminary figures stand at 248 horsepower and 310 pound-feet. 0-60 mph is said to take 6.1 seconds. Fuel economy figures and overall battery range will be announced at a later time. Recharging the battery takes less than 7 hours when plugged into a 120V outlet and less than 3 hours when plugged into a fast charger.
    For performance, there is the 2018 M550i xDrive. Under the hood is a turbocharged 4.4L V8 with 456 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque - again, these are preliminary. Paired with an eight-speed automatic and a rear-biased version of BMW's xDrive AWD system, the M550i xDrive can hit 60 mph in "under four seconds". This means the M550i is currently faster than the last-generation M5. The model sits 10 millimeters lower than other 5-Series models and BMW's M division has handled the suspension work.
    Both models will be arriving at U.S. dealers this spring. Pricing will be announced towards the launch.

    Power delivery on all electric. 
    The BMW eDrive system’s electric motor has an output of 95 hp and offers maximum torque of 184 lb-ft on tap, while the 4-cylinder TwinPower Turbo combustion engine with its 2.0-liter displacement generates 180 hp and 215 lb-ft of torque (preliminary). The overall system output of 248hp (preliminary) and combined peak torque of 310 lb-ft (preliminary) propel the BMW 530e iPerformance from 0 to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds (preliminary) and enable it to reach a top speed of 130 mph (preliminary). The electric motor and combustion engine direct their power to the sedan’s rear wheels in the BMW 530i Sedan or all four wheels in the BMW 530i xDrive sedan via the standard 8-speed Steptronic transmission with paddle shifters. Positioning the electric motor upstream from the transmission allows the transmission’s ratios to be used in all-electric mode too. This dispenses with the need for a torque converter, something that goes a long way towards offsetting the weight penalty of the additional drive unit.
    The high-voltage battery pack consisting of lithium-ion cells with a total capacity of 9.2 kWh has been placed in a space-saving location underneath the rear seat and includes efficient refrigerant cooling with a highly integrated low-temperature circuit. Thanks to the battery’s installation, the BMW 530e iPerformance offers full use of the trunk and a flat load compartment floor. The battery can be charged to full capacity in under 7 hours from a residential 120V outlet using the OUC (Occasional Use Cable), while tailor-made solutions enabling safe, straightforward charging are available through BMW 360° Electric Lifestyle, such as the BMW Installation Services and BMW Solar Energy programs. The BMW Charging Station uses its output of 3.6kW - 7.2 kW (16/32 A, 240 V) to reduce charging time to under three hours, to wake up to a fully charged vehicle each day. The progress of the charging process can be tracked via a graphic in the car’s instrument cluster.
    iPerformance Characteristics. 
    BMW 530e iPerformance is equipped with various elements unique to the iPerformance line-up. Exterior design elements include: blue kidney grille slats, blue wheel hub covers, charging socket located between the front wheel arch and the A-pillar on the driver’s side, “i” badging on the front fenders, “eDrive” emblems on the C?pillars and the “530e” badge on the trunk lid. When passengers open the doors they are welcomed by illuminated door sills bearing the “eDrive” lettering. The BMW 530e iPerformance also comes with an eDrive button on the center console, along with specially designed displays for both the instrument cluster in front of the driver and the central information screen.

    As well as the Driving Dynamics Control switch, with its SPORT, COMFORT and ECO PRO settings. The eDrive button, unique to the iPerformance models offers three driving modes: AUTO eDRIVE, MAX eDRIVE and BATTERY CONTROL.
    AUTO eDRIVE ensures that the engine and electric motor interact to optimum effect in all driving situations and allows an all-electric top speed of 56 mph (preliminary). This mode is automatically activated as the default setting every time the vehicle is started. When MAX eDRIVE mode is selected, the BMW 530e iPerformance drives on electric power alone. To do so, it uses the electric drive’s full power and can attain a maximum speed of 87 mph. However, if the accelerator is pressed through to kick down the engine will kick in which is whenever an extra boost of power is needed.
    BATTERY CONTROL mode lets the driver set the charge level for the high-voltage battery manually. The intelligent battery management of the BMW 530e iPerformance either keeps the high-voltage battery’s charge constant at the selected level or increases it to the pre-set value, with the electric motor acting as a generator. BATTERY CONTROL mode makes it possible to conserve or even increase the reserves of electric power while traveling on the highway to ensure that an upcoming section through an urban area can be driven on pure electric.
    Latest-generation iDrive for even more intuitive operation.
    As in all the other models in the new BMW 5 Series line-up, the navigation, telephone, entertainment and vehicle functions grouped within the standard high-resolution 10.25-inch iDrive display can be controlled not only using the iDrive Controller, but also by the iDrive Touch screen display or with the help of the Intelligent Voice Assistant. Optional BMW Gesture Control which offers a particularly intuitive and easy way of operating commonly used infotainment system and telephone functions allows the driver and passenger another convenient way of interacting with iDrive 6.0.
    Driver Assistance Systems. 
    The new BMW 530e iPerformance comes with an extensive range of assistance systems which can be used in conjunction of eDrive mode. Utilizing the Blond Spot Detection system when switching lanes, Active Lane Keeping Assistant with Side Collision Avoidance steers the vehicle back into its lane if the sensors detect another vehicle in the lane.  Two systems, providing a semi-automated driving capability are Active Lane Keeping Assistant & Traffic Jam Assistant.  Together, these systems operate between 0 – 130 mph and use smooth, comfort-enhancing steering interventions to keep the vehicle in lane. The latest generation of the system features improved image recognition and software algorithms to keep the vehicle reliably on course. In certain situations, particularly in stop & go traffic, the system also uses the vehicle in front as an additional reference point.
    Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go for all driving situations.                        
    Dynamic Cruise Control (DCC), which is standard on the BMW 5 Series Sedan, maintains any selected speed between 19 –130mph. It also supports energy-saving coasting by decoupling the engine from the powertrain when the driver lifts off the accelerator at higher speeds. The new and improved Active Cruise Control (ACC) with Stop & Go uses radar to adjust the pre-selected speed to the traffic situation. The system operates at all speeds up to 130 mph and is capable of braking to a standstill in stop & go traffic and automatically senses if the vehicle in front is moving once more. If the vehicle has been placed into standby mode by pushing the resume button on the steering wheel, the all-new BMW 5 Series can automatically start moving again up to 30 seconds after coming to a full-stop. The ACC system now also takes into account highway exits and traffic circles where it adjusts the acceleration dynamics to suit these special traffic situations. The control technology monitors two vehicles ahead so that vehicle speed can be adjusted earlier and smoother.  Heating elements ensure that the front-mounted radar sensor remains fully operational even if it’s snowing.
     
    Active Lane Departure Warning.
    The Lane Departure Warning system operates at speeds between 40 – 130 mph. If the forward-facing stereo camera detects that the vehicle is straying from its lane, Active Lane Keeping Assistant helps the driver steer back on course with smooth and seamless steering interventions. Utilizing the Active Blind Spot Detection system (12-130 mph) when switching lanes, Active Lane Keeping Assistant with Side Collision Avoidance steers the vehicle back into its lane if its sensors detect another vehicle in the next lane. Side Collision Avoidance, which operates at speeds between 40 and 130 mph, warns drivers by means of a visual signal or steering wheel vibration if another vehicle has drifted too close to the side of the vehicle. If the system detects sufficient room on the other side of the vehicle, it correctively steers the vehicle in this direction and out of a possible accident. This corrective steering assistance can be overridden at any time by the driver.
    Evasion Aid: evasive steering around obstacles.
    Another new function contained with Active Driving Assistant Plus is the Evasion Aid. If a quick lane change is required, for example when the vehicle in front brakes aggressively, the evasion aid – which operates at speeds up to 100 mph – supports the necessary evasive steering action. Faster steering and counter steering during an evasive maneuver results in reduced vehicle instability, supported by Dynamic Stability Control (DSC). While executing the maneuver, the Evasion Aid also uses information from the vehicle’s sensor systems to check how much unobstructed space is available around the vehicle. At speeds over 100 mph, the system no longer provides actual steering support and instead focuses on maximizing vehicle stability.
     
    BMW Connected Onboard.
    With the launch of BMW Connected in the USA and Europe in 2016, BMW has introduced an all-encompassing digital concept designed to aid personal mobility. Using the flexible Open Mobility Cloud as a basis, BMW Connected seamlessly integrates the vehicle into the user’s digital life via multiple touchpoints, such as an iPhone, Apple Watch, Android smartphone or smartwatch. New additions, introduced in the new BMW 5 Series Sedan, include BMW Connected Onboard, which allows personal information such as the next navigation destination, estimated arrival time and current weather conditions at the destination to be shown on the car’s display. BMW Connected is also able to transfer the user’s personal mobility agenda from their smartphone straight to their car.
    3D Surround View.
    Surround View and Remote 3D View offer peace of mind by allowing owners monitor their BMW 5 Series at all times. The system shows a bird’s-eye view of the driver’s car as well as a three-dimensional image of the area surrounding the vehicle. Any obstacles, including curbs, or other vehicles or pedestrians that suddenly appear can be spotted.
     
    ParkNow and On-Street Parking Information.
    The integration of the ParkNow service means that on-street parking spaces and garages can be easily located, reserved and paid for. Reservations can either be made while en route from the navigation system or in advance via the ParkNow smartphone app or website. Over 150 parking garages are currently affiliated with the ParkNow network in the U.S. alone, with that number expected to grow to over 500 affiliated garages by mid-2017. Once the selection has been made via the navigation system, the driver is directed straight to the chosen parking place and an electronic ticket is generated which grants access to the reserved space.
     
    On-Street Parking Information (OSPI) is receiving its world premiere in the all-new BMW 5 Series Sedan. This cutting-edge technology helps to alleviate the problem of vehicles searching for a parking space, which accounts for a large part of traffic congestion in metropolitan areas. OSPI works similar to the Advanced Real Time Traffic Information system, using historical and current data to draw conclusions regarding the availability of parking spaces on route within the coverage area. The system then uses a model to predict the odds of finding an open parking spot. A color coding on the navigation map displays the systems suggestions.

    M Performance engine merges power with efficiency. 
    The first ever BMW M550i xDrive is also the first M Performance model to be powered by a specifically modified M Performance TwinPower Turbo 4.4 liter 8-cylinder engine. This V8 unit is equipped with two twin-scroll turbochargers and features a High Precision Injection system, Valvetronic fully variable valve lift and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing control. This technology adds up to an output of 456 hp* at 5,500 rpm* and peak torque of 480 lb?ft* from just 1,800 rpm* propelling the BMW M550i xDrive from 0 to 60 mph in under 4.0 seconds and then on to an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.
     
    Steptronic Sport transmission and BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive. 
    The all-new BMW M Performance 5 Series Sedan sends all its power via a specially tuned Steptronic Sport 8-speed transmission, playing a key role in the dynamics of the BMW M550i xDrive. The M Performance configuration of the shift modes has been tailored to the characteristics of the V8 engine, for even faster engagement across the entire rev range. The 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission can also be operated using the shift paddles on the steering wheel or the shifter in the center console.
     
    BMW intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive system in the BMW M550i xDrive splits drive power between all four wheels as the situation demands – intelligently and with a rear-wheel bias. BMW xDrive is key to delivering two fundamental elements of the trademark M Performance driving experience under all conditions: increased driving performance and extremely precise handling. The Adaptive M Sport suspension lowers ride height by 10 millimeters and is paired to either the standard 19-inch M light-alloy wheels in Cerium Grey metallic matte or the optional** 20-inch M light-alloy wheels (in an exclusive design, also painted in the Cerium Grey metallic matte finish).

    M Performance equipment.
    The exterior of the first ever BMW M550i xDrive boldly expresses the sedan’s dynamic performance capabilities. The M aerodynamic kit, including an M rear spoiler on the trunk lid, accentuates the sporty lines and at the same time, it optimizes the airflow guiding the air around and over the car. The exterior mirror caps, the kidney grille frame, the special M Performance design accents on the front air intake and the two Air Breathers on the front fenders, exclusively feature Cerium Grey metallic finish, while the high-gloss Shadow Line trim around the windows gives added impact to this sport sedan’s undeniably dynamic appearance. An M sports exhaust system – with exclusive tailpipes in Black chrome are responsible for producing the unmistakable and exciting BMW M roar.
     
    Additional elements include illuminated door sills bearing the “M550i xDrive” inscription. Standard Multi-contour seats are upholstered in Black Dakota leather with blue contrast stitching (Nappa Leather optionally available), the latest version of the M sports steering wheel, M design floor mats and pedals made from aluminum highlight the sporty exclusivity that is a hallmark of all BMW M Performance Automobiles.
     
    Advanced Driver Assistance Systems.
    Featured across the all-new BMW 5 Series line-up, the BMW M550i xDrive also offers a wide choice of assistance systems. These include the optionally available Active Driving Assistant Plus, including Active Cruise Control (ACC) with Stop & Go, Evasion Aid and Active Lane Keeping Assistant now featuring extended functionality.
     
    BMW Connected – Forging an even closer link between man, machine and the outside world.
    The latest generation of the BMW 5 Series enables close-knit connectivity between the driver, vehicle and outside world thanks to BMW Connected. This new system links up devices such as smartphones, smartwatches, computers and tablets, as well as the vehicle’s navigation system, via the BMW servers. This technology is capable of identifying driving patterns as well as personal preferences, turning it into a de facto personal mobility manager that helps users to overcome with ease the increasingly complex challenges of day-to-day mobility. Before the journey has even started, BMW Connected automatically factors in Advanced Real Time Traffic Information (ARTTI) for route-planning purposes, and recommends departing earlier if a detour has deemed necessary due to traffic hold-ups. BMW Connected uses the vehicle’s location as the basis for calculating the route in the usual way but it also considers the BMW driver’s location for its calculations too.
     
    The new system also merges the functions and services of the familiar BMW Remote App and BMW Connected App. Now, users are able to access products such as ParkNow for digitized reservation and payment of parking spaces or use On-Street Parking Information to identify the areas of a town where drivers are most likely to find an available parking spot. The system provides the driver the information via the 10.25” iDrive Display. The optional Remote Control Parking system allows the driver to maneuver the BMW 5 Series Sedan into even the tightest spaces from outside the vehicle with the help of the BMW Display Key. Once the car has been parked, BMW Connected helps to guide users to their final destination on foot.

    The 8-Series is reportedly coming

    Rumors of BMW bringing back the 8-Series have been floating around since February when sources revealed there were two proposals on the table; a larger version of the 6-Series Gran Coupe and a new two-door coupe/convertible. This would only intensify over the summer when a report revealed that BMW had trademarked a number of 8-Series names. Now a new report says BMW is going forward with the 8-Series as a coupe.
    Automobilwoche has learned from sources that BMW will be bringing back the 8-Series in late 2018. The model will fill the gap between the 7-Series and the Rolls-Royce Ghost/Wraith/Dawn, and give the Mercedes S-Class coupe a run for its money. The coupe will come first, followed by a convertible and the option of a V12 engine. A M8 version is under discussion.
    Automobilwoche also reports that the 6-Series coupe and convertible will not be replaced, although the fate of the 6-Series Gran Coupe is up in the air.

    Is that a 5 Series or 7 Series?

    Previous Page Next Page BMW has finally pulled the covers off the 2017 5 Series. Wearing the codename G30, the new 5 Series looks to be borrowing a number of items from its larger brother, the 7 Series.
    The most obvious item shared between the two is the design. Looking at the pictures that BMW released, you would swear that you're looking at a 7 and not 5. Details such a wider kidney grille, new headlights, bold character line, and reshaped trunk are some of items both models share. The only difference is the 5 Series is smaller. One item we're glad to see is the 5 Series not growing much in terms of size. Compared to the 2016 model, the 2017 5 Series is only 1.2 inches longer, 0.6 inches taller, and 0.3 inches wider. The 5 Series has also lost some weight, 137 pounds to be exact. This is due to the use of magnesium, aluminum and high-strength steel throughout the vehicle.
    Inside, it's more of the 7 Series making its way into the 5 Series with the same dashboard design and a new iDrive infotainment system. This version features Apple CarPlay compatibility, along with gesture control and 4G LTE connectivity as options. Other tech features include the ability to view images of your parked 5 Series on your smartphone and an optional automated parking system.
    When the 5 Series arrives at dealers next February, it will be available with two engines. The 530i comes with a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder with 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The 540i boasts a 3.0L turbocharged inline-six with 335 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. Both engines come with an eight-speed automatic and the choice of either rear-wheel or BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive system.
    The 5 Series also features some clever chassis tech. The optional Adaptive Drive system features an updated Dynamic Damper Control. The system adjusts the anti-roll bars to improve cornering. Rear-wheel steering (known as Integral Active Steering) is now available on xDrive models.

    Design.
    The all-new BMW 5 Series Sedan remains the quintessential midsize sport sedan. “The new BMW 5 Series will make a mature, confidently stylish and dynamic impression at every opportunity. The formal and precise design combines presence, aesthetic appeal and functionality in equal measure,” says Karim Habib, Head of Design BMW Automobiles. The exterior dimensions of the new car are only slightly larger than those of its predecessor. The new BMW 5 Series Sedan is 1.2 inches longer than the outgoing model 0.3 inches wider and 0.6 inches taller. Its wheelbase measures 117.1 inches (+0.2 inches).
    LED Adaptive headlights as standard.
    The familiar BMW kidney grille is flanked by twin circular headlights with the headlight housings now connecting seamlessly with the kidney grille, emphasizing the car’s width.
    The standard LED Adaptive headlights already make the BMW 5 Series a captivating prospect, its concentrated gaze locked onto the road. Adaptive Full LED Headlights alter the light graphic and can be specified as an option. With Adaptive Full LED Headlights, the LED tubes of the daytime running lights are hexagonal and extend to meet the kidney grille, creating a stylistic connection that accentuates the wide, low-to-the-road appearance of the front end.
    The side view: short overhangs, elongated silhouette.
    The passenger cell is set back and leads the eye over a flowing roofline to the rear end, while a short front overhang underscores the car’s sporty appearance. “For the first time, the new BMW 5 Series Sedan brings together two traditional BMW design elements which are normally separate from one another. The swage line turns up as it heads rearwards, moving from shadow to light and sweeping up the Hofmeister kink in its path rather than continuing into the rear. This upwards motion lends the car a forward-surging character, and the expressive, swooping surface imbues it with an undeniable muscularity,” explains Habib.
     
    The rear: a visually lower center of gravity.
    The low-slung, expressive and width-accentuating design of the rear end points to the dynamic, direct handling of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan. The rear lights reach deep into the sides of the car, creating a visual connection between its flanks and rear end. Cutting-edge LED bars enable a slim interpretation of the hallmark BMW “L” shape and underline the width of the new sedan. Another defining element of the rear end are the exhaust tailpipes, which are now arranged symmetrically on both sides on all model variants. Depending on the engine and equipment package specified, the tailpipes will be circular (four-cylinder engines) or trapezoidal (six-cylinder versions and cars with the M Sport package).
    EfficientDynamics Enhancements.
    The all-new BMW 5 series model now features active kidney grille slats for the radiator. This system opens moveable slats behind the vertical, fixed kidney grille slats and lower air intakes when more cooling air is required but otherwise keeps them closed to optimize aerodynamic efficiency,
     
    The Air Curtains in the front apron team up with Air Breathers to cut air turbulence in the wheel arches significantly and channel the air effectively as the car pushes through it. Aerodynamic efficiency, courtesy of optimized trim and airflow-channeling elements which are fitted across the whole of the underbody; provide a considerable degree of underbody sealing. This also reduces lift, which enhances dynamics at high speeds.
     
    A total of 13 colors, wheels in 18-inch, 19-inch and 20-inch sizes.
    Two non-metallic and 11 metallic color shades are available for the new BMW 5 Series. Customers can choose from a total of 4 different light-alloy wheels (18-inch, 19 inch and 20-inch).
    Sport design: now standard. 
    The standard Sport design shines the spotlight on the car’s dynamic character and stands out with numerous trim elements in high-gloss black and 18-inch Double Spoke light-alloy wheels (optional 19-inch in a bi-color polished finish). Chrome window surround, chrome kidney grill bars, and front & rear bumper trim finishers on the exterior and SensaTec upholstered dashboard on the interior enhances the sporty character of the all-new BMW 5 Series. On the interior, standard Sport Seats with power adjustable side bolsters and an Anthracite headliner welcome the driver and front passenger.
    M Sport Package.
    The M Sport package will be available from launch. It includes the M Aerodynamic kit (front apron with larger air intakes, side skirt trim, a diffusor-style rear apron and an exhaust system with two rectangular tailpipes), Shadowline exterior trim, lowered M Sport suspension and 19-inch M Double-Spoke Wheels with Mixed Performance Run-Flat Tires or all-season Run-Flat Tires.  The interior includes a new M Sport leather steering wheel, a SensaTec upholstered dashboard and aluminum pedal covers and footrest, with exclusive floor mats when selecting the option of Black Dakota Leather with contrast Blue stitching and piping.
    Luxury travel: more freedom of movement, low noise levels.
    The all-new 5 Series offers increased  trunk capacity  (18.7 cubic feet), capable of carrying 4 golf bags. The lowered instrument panel, freestanding display, and the cabin’s enlarged dimensions provide additional room and comfort. Passangers in the rear now have more space to spread out, thanks to the increased kneeroom and extended legroom (+1.2 inches).
    As part of the interior’s acoustic design the headliner is equipped with built-in sound absorbing materials to reduce interfering sounds, which increases the driver and passenger’s ability to communicate. Additional storage spaces in the door pockets, able to hold regular sized bottles, have been created. The cupholders in the center console  have been designed to allow easy access control switches. The storage compartment in front of the cupholders can be equipped with an optional wireless charging tray.
    Seats with massage function.
    The standard front Sport seats are 16-way electrically adjustable, including adjustable side bolsters for optimum lateral support, and offer tremendous safety and comfort together with a wide choice of materials. Other enhancements inlcude decorative stitching for the optional Dakota and quilting for the optional Nappa leather upholsteries can be selected. The available 20-way adjustable Multi-contour seats for the driver and passenger can be additionally equipped with ventilation and massage function. Eight different massage programs, each with a choice of three intensity modes, relax the muscles in the back and relieve the strain on the spinal discs while driving. The massage function uses 20 air chambers incorporated into the seat backrest and cushion, which are alternately inflated and deflated. The driver is now able to set temperature thresholds for activating the seat heating and seat ventilation, as well as the steering wheel heating – a highly convenient feature that starts these functions automatically when the temperature falls below or rises above the respective limit.
    There is room for up to three adults on the rear seats. When the middle seat is not occupied, rear seat passengers can make use of the center armrest and its integrated cupholders.
    Contact sensors for the seat control.
    When equipped with Multi-contour seats, new seat adjustment switches contain touch-sensitive sensors. Touching the switch located on the outside edge of the seat, activates one of five sensors and the corresponding menu opens in the iDrive display. Lightly pressing on the switch again then carries out the desired adjustment, all clearly illustrated by a matching animation in the display.
    Gesture control, Intelligent Voice Control, Touch screen and iDrive 6.0 touchpad Controller.
    The latest version of Gesture control which premiered last year in the all-new BMW 7 Series is now available as an option in the all-new BMW 5 Series. Navigation, telephone, entertainment features and vehicle functions can be visualized on the standard high-resolution 10.25-inch screen and controlled not just in the usual manner using the iDrive Controller, but also by means of gestures, voice commands or simply touching the display.
    Available content is arranged in a total of six large tiles over two screen pages, providing the driver with direct access to functions as well as a live display of the associated content. The interactive and live tile for entertainment, for example, shows the current song selection with an image of the album cover. When navigation is active, the driver can see the route the vehicle is taking in the main menu’s navigation tile. If the driver now touches this map section, the navigation screen opens, showing the detailed map view. Touching a tile’s header line, opens the respective function’s main menu, in this case the navigation menu. This allows for easy and quick access to all information stored, saved or currently enabled.  The two sets of three pads can be rearranged as desired, allowing drivers to position the content they use most frequently in the first screen.
    Users select menu options and the associated functions in the usual way with the iDrive Controller or by simply tapping the button on the iDrive Touch screen with their finger.
    The all-new BMW 5 Series can also be operated using voice control or with optional Gesture Control which offers a particularly intuitive and easy way of operating commonly used infotainment system and telephone functions. All that is needed are simple movements of the hand or fingers, which are detected by a 3D sensor in the vicinity of the center console and translated into commands: pointing at the screen with the index finger is all it takes to accept a phone call, for instance, while a swiping motion with the hand rejects it. The swiping action can also be used to open submenus. Tracing a circle with the index finger adjusts the audio system’s volume, and the driver can pull their thumb and index finger away from the navigation map towards them to zoom in on that section of the map. In addition, the two-finger point towards the iDrive screen can be used to carry out an individually selectable command, such as instructing the navigation system to start route guidance to the home address or skipping to the next track in a playlist.
    The Intelligent Voice Control offers the most advanced level of natural voice control currently featured in a BMW.  Now, the driver can formulate their request in everyday language and simply ask, for example, where the nearest Italian restaurant is located. Intelligent Voice Control is currently available in English, Spanish and French.
    Latest-generation multicolor Head-Up Display.
    In the all-new BMW 5 Series, drivers can see Advanced Real-Time Traffic, navigation instructions, warnings from the driver assistance systems, phone lists and the audio track selection. A wealth of information is being projected onto the windshield when activated. With a resolution of 800 x 400 pixels, the projection area is around 75 percent larger than on the outgoing model.
    Climate Control and Lighting.
    The all-new BMW 5 Series Sedan is equipped as standard with two-zone automatic climate control featuring independent temperature control for driver and front passenger and automatic activation of the air recirculation function whenever necessary.
    The standard Ambiance lighting feature includes colored LED light, providing illumination of the interior and accentuating its design contours, particularly around the instrument panel and the doors. There is a choice of eleven different lighting effects with six different light colors, and the brightness can also be adjusted individually.
    Surround sound delivers flawless acoustics.  
    For the first time, a surround sound system from Bowers & Wilkins with diamond tweeters is available in the all-new BMW 5 Series range. This optional high-end audio system is renowned for delivering excellent acoustics. The 10-channel amplifier feeds a total of 16 speakers with brushed stainless steel grilles sporting the exclusive Fibonacci-patterned holes, which illuminate when the system is switched on. A measuring microphone is built into the car to allow the acoustics to be precision tuned to the specific conditions – for example, the number of occupants – in order to create a flawless surround sound experience for everyone in the car. The 1,400 watts can be matched to the selected music genre.
    Alternatively, there is the option of a nine-channel sound system with 16 speakers and a total output of 600 watts from Harman Kardon, as well as the standard 205 W, eight-channel HiFi system with 12 speakers.
    The optional Rear-Seat Entertainment Professional system offers occupants in the rear the luxury of two independently controlled, high-resolution 10.2-inch screens with DVD player, which now includes support for BluRay® discs and HDMI connections, plus connections for MP3 players, USB devices, games consoles and headphones. Passengers can also access the vehicle’s entertainment functions, such as the radio.
    Luggage compartment.
    The all-new BMW 5 Series Sedan boasts a larger 18.7 cubic feet trunk. The lowered trunk sill in combination with the increased trunk space and width ensure that even bulky items can be loaded easily. Thanks to the standard split-fold-down rear seats which allow the rear backrest to be folded flat with a 40:20:40 split for maximum flexibility, carrying longer cargo items, such as skis or snowboards is possible. The automatic opening and closing function triggered with either the key or a gentle forward-backward kicking motion underneath the center of the rear bumper is available as an option.
    New engine family with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology.
    All members of the newly developed, modular BMW EfficientDynamics engine family feature an extremely lightweight, thermodynamically optimized all-aluminum construction. Thanks to their unrivalled BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, they meld maximum power with exemplary efficiency.
    These gasoline engines employ twin-scroll turbocharging, High Precision Injection, Double-VANOS variable camshaft control and Valvetronic fully variable valve timing.
    BMW 530i and BMW 540i: new four and six-cylinder gasoline engines.
    The new 2.0-liter 4-cylinder inline engine in the BMW 530i supersedes the gasoline unit previously fitted in the BMW 528i. The turbocharged direct injection engine delivers its peak output of 248 hp between 5,200 and 6,500 rpm, and puts its maximum torque of 258 lb-ft on tap from 1,450 rpm all the way up to 4,800 rpm. The BMW 530i sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 6 seconds (5.8 seconds with xDrive) and reaches a top speed of 130 mph and, with M Sport Package and 19-inch M Double-Spoke Wheels with Mixed Performance Run-Flat Tires, the electronically-limited top speed is increased to 155 mph.
    The range-topping engine for the time being can be found in the new BMW 540i and generates 335 hp (+35 hp increase) between 5,500 and 6,500 rpm. The 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder musters up a mighty 332 lb-ft of torque from 1,380 – 5,200 rpm. The BMW 540i sedan powers from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.9 seconds and top speed is electronically-limited to 130 mph, 155 mph with M Sport Package and 19-inch M Double-Spoke Wheels with Mixed Performance Run-Flat Tires. At 4.7 seconds for the sprint from 0-60 mph, the all-wheel-drive BMW 540i xDrive bests its predecessor (535i xDrive Sedan) in acceleration by 7/10th of a second.
    All the engines available at launch with BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive.
    BMW xDrive counteracts oversteer and understeer effectively and increases the car’s pulsating handling abilities when turning into corners and eagerly powering out of corners. The BMW all wheel drive system provides the perfect blend of dynamism, directional stability and comfort. For the first time, BMW xDrive can be combined with Integral Active Steering as well as the lowered M sport suspension included in the M Sport Package. The Sport variant of the eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission comes standard on the new BMW 5 Series Sedan and features even more dynamic shift characteristics along with shift paddles on the steering wheel for changing gear manually.
    Navigation-assisted shift strategy.
    This technology is best exemplified by the ECO PPRO mode with ECO PRO Tips, which can be activated with the Driving Experience switch. It is interlinked with the Navigation system Professional, enabling it to detect road topography. Such measures are accompanied by intelligently controlled energy and climate management. The active kidney in the new BMW 5 Series allowing even more variable control of the cooling air for engine, brakes and air conditioning to suit the situation. Aside from its aerodynamic benefits, the system also shortens the engine’s warm-up phase and makes sure that heat is retained for longer after the engine has been switched off.
    Chassis and Driver Assistant Systems.
    In its 7th generation, the BMW 5 Series features, a redesigned chassis, intelligent lightweight engineering, BMW’s renowned even weight distribution, a highly torsion-resistant body and leading edge driver assistant systems. The BMW engineers have succeeded in making the car’s handling more agile and precise, yet without compromising the comfort which is a hallmark of this sport sedan. At the same time, an extensive range of driver assistance systems take the BMW 5 Series Sedan a big step further down the road with improved semi-automated driving features.

    Double-wishbone front suspension and five-link rear suspension.
    The wheelbase of 117.1 inches shows a slight increase over the previous 5 Series, while front and rear track width of 63 / 63.9 inches (+/- 0 front / -0.2 rear) are roughly on par. The new double-wishbone front axle’s kinematics are perfectly configured for a long-distance sedan. Extensive use of light-metal components keep unsprung mass as low as possible, while separating the construction into an upper and a lower control arm level gave the engineers considerable freedom to fine-tune the balance between dynamics and comfort. The spring struts are not required to perform wheel position functions, so only have to handle minimal transverse forces. The suspension therefore delivers finely controlled responses to bumps in the road. With small kinematic lever arms that minimize disturbance torque around the steering axis, the new BMW 5 Series Sedan offers the driver excellent steering feel with clear road feedback. The rear suspension and double-wishbone front suspension work together to provide excellent anti-roll control when cornering, but never at the expense of ride comfort.
    Light-metal components are also used extensively in the new five-link rear suspension, which is even lighter and stiffer than in the previous model and provides precise wheel location and excellent tracking stability in all driving situations. The specially calibrated elastokinematics, the large axle sub frame mounting and supporting system, the compression strut connecting the suspension and body and the high structural stiffness combined with low unsprung masses create an excellent overall balance between agility and comfort. The large mounting and supporting system also plays an important part in ensuring good acoustic insulation between the powertrain and suspension. Thanks to this efficient decoupling, the new rear axle also contributes to the excellent acoustic comfort on board the BMW 5 Series Sedan.
    Integral Active Steering now also available in combination with BMW xDrive.
    The all-new BMW 5 Series features an electromechanical power steering system with variable steering ratio and speed-sensitive power assistance. Optionally, the BMW 5 Series can now also be equipped with a revised – now electromechanical – Integral Active Steering system, with steering rear wheels for extra agility, stability and comfort. Integral Active Steering gives the new BMW 5 Series Sedan excellent directional stability on highways, while around town the steering response is pleasingly light and agile. Integral Active Steering can now also be combined with BMW xDrive.
    Tailored dynamics and comfort for suspension and brakes.
    The new BMW 5 Series is fitted with optimized lightweight brakes. Depending on the model variant, they feature single-piece or two-piece four-piston fixed aluminum calipers at the front, with lightweight discs, and single-piston calipers with an integrated electromechanical parking brake at the rear.
    The BMW 5 Series rides on 18-inch Double Spoke wheels with All-Season Run-Flat Tires as standard, with All-Season non Run-Flat Tires, including a space saver spare tire under the trunk floor, now available as a no-cost option. 19-inch V-Spoke Bi-Color wheels with All-Season Run-Flat or mixed performance Run-Flat tires are available as a no cost option. Vehicles equipped with M Sport Package come with 19-inch M Double-Spoke wheels with All-Season Run-Flat or mixed performance Run-Flat tires. On 540i models equipped with M Sport Package, a 20-inch V-Spoke Wheel with mixed performance Run-Flat Tires are additionally available as an upgrade option.
    A lowered M Sport suspension is included with M Sport Package, and is now combinable with 4-cylinder models as well as BMW xDrive. The available Dynamic Damper Control system, which is equipped with new valves and an optimized control algorithm, matches the damping characteristics to the road surface and driving situation. At the same time, the Driving Dynamics Control switch allows drivers to choose between sportier or more comfort-oriented suspension settings.
    Debut for electromechanical anti-roll stabilization.
    The optional Adaptive Drive system, which combines Dynamic Damper Control, provides unsurpassed dynamics and comfort. In contrast to the previous active roll stabilization system, the anti-roll bars are now no longer actuated hydraulically but by means of electric swivel motors. The new system is fast-acting and precise, is lighter overall in weight and is much more frugal in its energy consumption. In addition to enhancing the driving dynamics of this sport sedan, active roll stabilization also improves comfort in driving, by actively countering bump disturbances affecting only one side of the car. On winding roads, the new BMW 5 Series Sedan offers even greater precision and agility that makes for excitingly nimble handling whenever sporty driving is required. By automatically adjusting to a wide range of driving conditions, Adaptive Drive enhances handling safety and stability, and provides excellent suspension comfort.
    New modes and functions for Driving Dynamics Control.
    The Driving Dynamics Control switch allows drivers to choose between sporty, comfortable or efficient modes, depending on the driving situation and personal preference.
    These modes – Comfort, Sport, ECO PRO and, optionally, Adaptive (if Dynamic Damper Control is equipped) – can be selected at the touch of a button. Each mode activates a predefined set-up for the relevant powertrain and chassis components. The Sport and ECO PRO modes can be further differentiated using the iDrive Controller, which allows the powertrain and chassis settings to be configured separately. In the new Adaptive Mode, the steering, Dynamic Damper Control and Steptronic transmission are automatically adapted to the driving style and, depending on vehicle specification, also to the route. The control logic reacts to inputs such as accelerator and steering commands, or gear selector position, to vary the powertrain and chassis characteristics between sporty and more comfort-oriented. Also, data supplied by the Navigation system Professional is used to proactively adapt the settings to take account of upcoming bends and intersections, or different types of road, such as highways or roads.
    State-of-the-art driver assistance systems for maximum comfort and convenience.
    The all-new BMW 5 Series features an unusually large number of automated functions for a vehicle in this segment. These functions monitor the vehicle’s environment using a combination of a forward facing stereo camera mounted on the windshield near the rear-view mirror and optional radar and ultrasound sensors.
    Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go for all driving situations.
    Dynamic Cruise Control (DCC), which is standard on the BMW 5 Series Sedan, maintains any selected speed between 19 – 130mph. It also supports energy-saving coasting by decoupling the engine from the powertrain when the driver lifts off the accelerator at higher speeds. The new and improved Active Cruise Control (ACC) with Stop & Go uses radar to adjust the pre-selected speed to the traffic situation. The system operates at all speeds up to 130 mph and is capable of braking to a standstill in stop & go traffic and automatically senses if the vehicle in front is moving once more. If the vehicle has been placed into standby mode by pushing the resume button on the steering wheel, the all-new BMW 5 Series can automatically start moving again up to 30 seconds after coming to a full-stop. The ACC system now also takes into account highway exits and traffic circles, where it adjusts the acceleration dynamics to suit these special traffic situations. The control technology monitors two vehicles ahead so that vehicle speed can be adjusted earlier and smoother.  Heating elements ensure that the front-mounted radar sensor remains fully operational even if snow is falling.
    Active Lane Departure Warning.
    The Lane Departure Warning system operates at speeds between 40 – 130 mph. If the forward-facing stereo camera detects that the vehicle is straying from its lane, Active Lane Keeping Assistant helps the driver steer back on course with smooth and seamless steering interventions. Utilizing the Blind Spot Detection system (12-130 mph), when switching lanes, Active Lane Keeping Assistant with Side Collision Avoidance steers the vehicle back into its lane if its sensors detect another vehicle in the next lane. Side Collision Avoidance, which operates at speeds between 40 and 130 mph, warns drivers by means of a visual signal or steering wheel vibration if another vehicle has drifted too close to the side of the vehicle. If the system detects sufficient room on the other side of the vehicle, it correctively steers the vehicle in this direction and out of possible accident prone situations. This corrective steering assistance can be overridden at any time by the driver.
    Evasion aid: evasive steering around obstacles.
    Another new function contained with Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go + Active Driving Assistant is the evasion aid. If a quick lane change is required, for example when the vehicle in front brakes aggressively, the evasion aid – which operates at speeds up to 100 mph – supports the necessary evasive steering action. Faster steering and counter steering during an evasive maneuver results in less vehicle instability, supported by Dynamic Stability Control (DSC). While executing the maneuver, the evasion aid also uses information from the vehicle’s sensor systems to check how much unobstructed space is available around the vehicle. At speeds over 100 mph, the system no longer provides actual steering support and instead focuses on maximizing vehicle stability.
    Active Lane Keeping Assistant & Traffic Jam Assistant semi-automated steering.
    Two systems, providing a semi-automated driving capability are Active Lane Keeping Assistant & Traffic Jam Assistant.  Together, these systems operate between 0 – 130 mph and uses smooth, comfort-enhancing steering interventions to keep the vehicle in lane. The latest generation of the system features improved image recognition and software algorithms to keep the vehicle reliably on course. In certain situations, particularly in stop-start traffic, the system also uses the vehicle in front as an additional reference point. In very heavy or stop & go traffic, the Active Lane Keeping Assistant & Traffic Jam Assistant reduces driving stress. The system’s hands-on-wheel detection is very sensitive, and can identify hand contact even when only a few fingers are touching the wheel.
    BMW ConnectedDrive and business technologies.
    The all-new BMW 5 Series Sedan sets new standards for connectivity between the driver, vehicle and outside world. The already extensive portfolio of BMW ConnectedDrive Services has been expanded to include new products that are designed to bring added comfort and efficiency.
     
    Perfect parking: remote controlled or automatic.
    The Remote Control Parking feature enables drivers to park in narrow spaces without the hassle of getting in or out of the vehicle. Utilizing the Display Key, the all-new 5 Series is easily maneuvered into the parking spot with the driver only having to position the vehicle in front of the desired parking space. The driver can then start/stop the engine and oversee the control of the function operation from outside the vehicle. All acceleration and braking actions are monitored and controlled by the Park Distance Control (PDC), the Parking Assistant and the Surround View sensors, while the engine can be started and switched off with the Display Key. This doesn’t make much sense maybe say something about this at note and delete it from here.
     
    The available Parking Assistant enables automated parking with the greatest of ease in both parallel parking spaces and perpendicular. Potential parking spaces now only have to be around 30-inches longer than the vehicle itself to be eligible, meaning that the system can maneuver the car into even smaller spots than before. The ultrasonic sensors detect suitable parking spaces up to a speed of 22 mph. The system then takes care of the entire parking procedure, including all necessary steering inputs, gear changes, acceleration and braking. In the case of parking spaces that are perpendicular, the system needs only around 15-inches of free space to each side of the car to trigger automated parking.
     
    3D Surround View. 
    Surround View and Remote 3D View offer peace of mind by allowing owners monitor their BMW 5 Series at all times. The system shows a bird’s-eye view of the driver’s car as well as a three-dimensional image of the area surrounding the vehicle. Any obstacles, including curbs, or other vehicles or pedestrians that suddenly appear can be spotted even earlier in this way.
     
    With the Remote 3D View technology, these three-dimensional views of the vehicle’s surrounding area can also be downloaded to the owner’s smartphone with the help of BMW Connected App. This fusion of driver assistance systems and connectivity services allows owners to quickly check on their parked car no matter how far away it is, as the image data is transmitted over the cell phone network to their mobile device.
     
    ParkNow and On-Street Parking Information.
    The integration of the ParkNow service means that on-street parking spaces and garages can be easily located, reserved and paid for. Reservations can either be made while en route from the navigation system or in advance via the ParkNow smartphone app or web. Over 150 parking garages are currently affiliated with the ParkNow network in the U.S. alone, with that number expected to grow to over 500 affiliated garages by mid-2017. Once the selection has been made via the navigation system, the driver is directed straight to the chosen parking place and an electronic ticket is generated which grants access to the reserved space.
     
    On-Street Parking Information (OSPI) is receiving its world premiere in the all-new BMW 5 Series Sedan. This cutting-edge technology helps to alleviate the problem of vehicles searching for a parking space, which accounts for a large part of traffic congestion in metropolitan areas. OSPI works similar to the Advanced Real Time Traffic Information system, using historical and data to draw conclusions regarding the availability of parking spaces on route within the coverage area. The system then uses a model to predict the odds of finding an open parking spot. A color coding on the navigation map displays the systems suggestions.
     
    Wireless charging, Apple CarPlay and the WiFi hotspot.
    The optional Wireless Charging allows for wireless charging via an inductive charging tray located in the center console in front of the cupholders. A wireless charging case is available from the Original BMW Accessories range for phones that are not yet compatible with this charging technology. Included with Wireless Charging is a WiFi hotspot with a free 3-month trial through AT&T offering a high-speed internet connection (LTE) for up to ten mobile devices.
     
    Apple CarPlay compatibility is also available in the BMW 5 Series Sedan. Integrating the smartphone into the vehicle’s iDrive system allows the phone, together with apps that have been approved by Apple for CarPlay, to be operated via the screen in the car by means of the iDrive Controller or Touch screen. BMW is the first carmaker to integrate Apple CarPlay completely wirelessly.
     
    The navigation system that keeps learning.
    The latest generation of the Navigation system Professional boasts quicker start-up, even faster route calculation and more realistic 3D graphics in cities. The navigation system is adaptive, meaning that if the driver keeps diverting from a suggested route, the next time the destination is selected the system will propose the newly learned route as the standard route to the requested destination. Thanks to the automatic map updates (up to 4x annually), which are free for the first three years the navigation maps are updated over the air, i.e. in the background over the mobile phone network using the vehicle’s built-in SIM card.
     
    BMW Connected: additional functions for the all-new BMW 5 Series Sedan.
    With the launch of BMW Connected in the USA in 2016, BMW has introduced an all-encompassing digital concept designed to aid personal mobility. Using a flexible platform called the Open Mobility Cloud as a basis, BMW Connected seamlessly integrates the vehicle into the user’s digital life via multiple touchpoints, such as an iPhone, Apple Watch, and Android smartphone. BMW Connected focuses first and foremost on the digital products and services which simplify the day-to-day planning of driving routes and appointments. The new BMW 5 Series Sedan includes various new functions such as BMW Connected Onboard – a personalized start screen for every driver – and Remote 3D View, which lets users keep an eye on their BMW 5 Series Sedan’s immediate vicinity with a glance at their smartphone.
     
    With BMW Connected, mobility extends beyond the vehicle. BMW Connected is a digital assistant that combines the various functions that assist with everyday mobility requirements. It detects mobility-related information, such as the addresses contained in calendar entries, and transmits this automatically to the vehicle. The user then receives a message on their smartphone notifying them in advance of the ideal departure time on the basis of the latest traffic information. In addition, places the user drives to regularly and personal mobility patterns are also stored automatically. This means that manually entering destination addresses in the navigation system is set to become a thing of the past. Assuming that the destination address and desired arrival time have been set outside the vehicle using BMW Connected, the link between smartphone and car means this data is imported seamlessly when the user gets in and is transferred to the BMW navigation system, allowing route guidance to be started directly. The familiar BMW Remote Services have likewise been incorporated into BMW Connected, allowing users to conveniently perform commands such as unlocking the vehicle or setting ventilation of the interior cabin directly from their smartphone.
     
    At the root of the BMW Connected concept is a flexible service architecture – the Open Mobility Cloud. This platform builds on Microsoft Azure and processes data and information from all sorts of different sources. With machine learning and data analytics capabilities, it provides the basis for personalization and context orientation of BMW Connected services.
    Amazon Alexa brings BMW Connected into your home.
    With the availability of BMW Connected as an Alexa skill on all Alexa-enabled devices, it is now possible to use voice commands to check the vehicle’s battery charge and fuel level as well as lock the vehicle remotely. The BMW Connected Alexa skill allows users to learn about their next scheduled trip, find out what time to leave, and send the destination to their BMW.
     
    ConnectedDrive Services – So connected you’re free.
    Thanks to the SIM card built into the vehicle as standard, the ConnectedDrive Services offer optimum connectivity and access to the unrivalled portfolio of BMW services without being dependent on the customer’s smartphone. The Concierge Service allows customers to contact live BMW Assist™ concierge while driving, instruct the agent to search for points of interest. The destination is sent directly to the vehicle’s navigation system for route guidance including all the relevant contact details.
     
    ARTTI (Advanced Real Time Traffic Information) allows BMW 5 Series drivers to avoid traffic jams the smart way. ARTTI provides traffic information virtually in real time so that drivers receive early notification of changes in the traffic situation and an alternative route will be suggested to the driver. If Dynamic Route Guidance is enabled, the route will be automatically recalculated to a more efficient path.
     
    Intelligent Emergency Call, which continues to offer an unrivalled level of service, ensures maximum safety out on the road. If the car’s airbags are triggered in an accident, this system uses the built-in SIM card to automatically transmit the severity of the accident to the BMW Call Center, as well as the potential risk of injury to the occupants and the vehicle’s location. This information is then used to arrange the best possible emergency response, while the Call Center stays in contact with the occupants if desired. The Intelligent Emergency Call can also be triggered manually to summon help swiftly for other road users in emergency situations.

    Lightweight engineering and safety.
    The BMW EfficientLightweight concept has been rigorously applied throughout the new BMW 5 Series Sedan. Using an intelligent multi-material mix consisting of aluminum, high-strength steel and magnesium, up to 137 lbs have been shaved off the weight of the previous model, while body strength and torsional rigidity have been increased. A low center of gravity, a perfectly balanced axle load ratio and a further reduction in unsprung masses have benefits for both dynamics and comfort.
    Intelligent multi-material mix reduces weight and increases strength.
    Large load-bearing members in the new BMW 5 Series Sedan, and strategic use of high- and ultra-high-strength steels in the roof, side members and rear, give the body high structural strength. The trunk, trunk lid, engine cross-member, rear side-members, roof and doors are constructed from aluminum. The doors, with laser-cut outer paneling, have an aluminum shell construction, which maximizes the weight-reducing benefits of this material when used in combination with state-of-the-art production technologies.
    The use of hot-stamped steels, aluminum alloys and multi-phase steels in the passenger cell provides high rigidity, for the best possible passive safety and low weight. The cast magnesium instrument panel support is over 4 lbs lighter than the steel version used on the previous model.
    For the first time, the trunk lid of the BMW 5 Series Sedan is made entirely of aluminum, bringing a weight saving up to 9 lbs. Over 1 lb have been shed thanks to use of the natural fiber kenaf in the inner lining of the trunk lid. Kenaf’s high recyclability means it is also has a high sustainability factor and is very eco-friendly.
    Unique body structure provides unbeatable occupant protection.
    The body structure offers optimized safety both for the vehicle’s own occupants and occupants of other vehicles by utilizing a lightweight designed and state-of-the-art simulation techniques. Deformation spaces are optimally designed and utilized, courtesy of the latest technologies in body design. The aim was to split up the main load paths so that the impact forces are dispersed over as wide an area as possible by the time they reach the extremely rigid passenger cell. This ensures optimal deceleration of the passenger cell in an accident, allowing the front, rear and side impact restraint systems to provide the most effective protection possible.
    Detecting accidents before they happen.
    The standard pre-crash accident detection system Active Protection enhances passive safety by detecting potential accident situations as they arise. If a collision risk is detected, the system automatically triggers a variety of occupant protection measures. The driver’s and front passenger’s belt tensioners are activated, and the windows and moonroof are closed. Following a collision, Active Protection automatically brings the vehicle to a standstill. The Frontal Collision Warning function detects an imminent risk of collision with preceding vehicles, and prepares the vehicle systems for a possible impact from vehicles behind.

    A BMW Pickup? (And no, not an M3/M4 one)

    There are days where we find ourselves wondering what goes through the head of executives of German automakers on some of the things they say. For example, BMW Australia’s Managing Director, Marc Werner told Motoring there could be a BMW pickup.
     
    “Never say never,” said Werner when asked about Mercedes-Benz's upcoming truck. “We’re watching the space closely.”
     
    “It’s easier for Mercedes [to bring a ute to market] because they have commercial vehicles and trucks and vans. We do not.”
     
    If BMW was to go forward, Motoring speculates that the tie-up with Toyota could grant them access to the HiLux truck.
     
    These comments are the complete opposite from those made by BMW Group’s senior vice-president of Asia, Pacific and South Africa, Hendrik von Kuenheim.
     
    “Definitely not, because this does not fit to our genes and our culture.”
     
    “There is huge potential in pick-ups. In North America you look at the Ford F-150 pick-up it is the best-selling car. You can do it but then you cannot be BMW. You have to be a different company, but this company is not ready to change from the ultimate driving machine and the ultimate successful company in luxury to a mass manufacturer who goes after the volume of pick-up trucks. Despite that the Ford F-150 is one hell of a vehicle. If you have that in a twin-cab version it is a great car. But that is Ford,” said von Kuenheim.

    BMW builds a sedan only destined for China

    BMW has revealed the 1-Series sedan today in China. This is the German automaker's belated answer to the likes of the Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz CLA. BMW has only released one image of the new model, but we can tell the design is the same as the Concept Compact Sedan that debuted at last year's Guangzhou Auto Show.
     
    BMW's press release on this model is very sparse on technical details. We do believe this sedan is using the UKL front-wheel drive platform that underpins the BMW X1 and Mini Cooper. Power will likely come from turbocharged three and four-cylinder engines.
     
    It is expected the model will go on sale soon in China and be produced at Brilliance Auto's plant in Shenyang, China. Brilliance it should be noted is BMW's partner in China.
     
    The model is expected to only be sold in China.
