The Colorado changes are cool. I wonder if the 5.3L will really be available in '09... they said it was coming for '08, if I remember correctly. Glad to see 16" and 17" RPO rims, and the chrome and body-color trim improves things, too.

Av is 6speed only? cool

Yes, actually every single full-size SUV with the 5.3L, 6.0L, or 6.2L get it standard. The 4.8L and 4.3L continue on with the same 4L60E as is, as do a lot of trucks in general, with the 6-speed available on crew cabs.

Yes, the Colorado/Canyon were supposed to get the 5.3L for '08 and then they just said "no, next year" so it really should be here this time around, right from the get go.

The Tahoe and Silvy get the 6.2L Vortec V8 class leading HP now maybe? Tundra your toast and the Silverado will be riding your ass. I am $h!ting my pants today Lucerne 3900, six speed auto's in trucks and now I find the 6.2 on the option list. GM is finally figuring it out.

No...not finally figuring it out. This has been the plan ALL along, the issue was just getting the components up to the proper capacity so they could effectively replace the HUGE number of 4-speed, etc. equipped units. It just took time to get things rolled out, and as you can see with many of the trucks STILL with the 4-speed as well as some lower Malibu trims, etc. the ramp-up still isn't complete.

Then again, there's the whole debate of why such ramp-ups weren't history long ago and these parts already here, but it is what it is.

As for the 6.2L/6-speed spreading, that's a great thing, but the real question will be the volume 5.3L/6-speed combo. It's down on power compared to some others, but also has been thought to be strangled quite a bit by the 4L60E for years, so it'll be interesting to see how it works with the 6-speed and higher rear gears in these heavy utes and trucks now. Like it or not, the Toyota 5.7L/6-speed combos is one of the sweetest out there in terms of overall polish (feel, sound, gear changes, etc.), power, AND fuel mileage...the latter of which has always perturbed me a bit with some misleading competitor advertisements and such. Maybe paper ratings it isn't as high, but real world is where it really shows.

A good example, in driveability and such, has been Edmunds (yes, Edmunds) long-term tests of both a Silverado 1500 6.0L and a Tundra Crew 5.7L. They fully admit the GM interior has a more friendly layout and attractive materials, but their Silverado's clunky and harsh transmission combined with an engine that has grunt but just doesn't fully show it cannot compare to the always silky, strong, beast of a 5.7L/6-speed that's perfectly matched in the Toyo, and good enough to make many of the editors able to ignore some of it's interior and other touches that aren't as great.

We'll see. If anything, I'm hoping the 5.3L can really come more effectively alive backed up to the 6-speed--and hopefully be more efficient and smoother in the process.

I thought the 5.3L 4L60E was a gem and great on gas. This will really help out these trucks. I wish they would have done the six speed auto on 5.3's in the Extended Cab and Regular as well. Along with a 6.2L in the extended or will that become the SS?

Have they really had good mileage? One if my friends was going to buy one but took it back after a few days because the mileage was terrible. Another person I know with a Tunrda likes it...except for the mileage.

It will be interesting to see how the 6.2 gets rated and with the different gear ratios.

Nothing is great when you're talking about a full-size V8 truck, but real world driving of actual buyers has shown mileage results the same as and often better than supposedly "most efficient" competitors like the GM's--the newest models of which, Active Fuel Management and all, have generally been getting worse mileage all around than the GMT-800's averaged. Goes to show all that's printed and said isn't necessarily reality.

Read some owner reports and also even magazine reviews, and these mileage figures continue to be backed up.

Aren't the 900s a good bit heavier than the 800's?

I've noticed the magazine ratings on the Tunrda are always pretty good, but folks I know that have them don't share the same opinion. OTOH, I know 3 guys with GMT900's 2 say their mileage is better than the GMT800's.

The 900's aren't much heavier than the 800's but the 'yota is heavier than both. If they're really getting 18mpg consistently, they're doing pretty good.

Then again, there's the whole debate of why such ramp-ups weren't history long ago and these parts already here, but it is what it is.

The Camry had a 4-speed standard as recently as '04, the Accord as recently as '02<and the 5-speed that followed has been riddled with problems>, the Altima as recently as '06, the Mazda 6 as recently as '05, the Jetta in '04, the Galant still has a 4-speed standard as do the Subaru Legacy and Hyundai Sonata. Now I know other domestics don't count, but the Ford Fusion/Mercury Milan started with a 5 speed in '06, 500/Montego started with a 6-speed in '05, the Sebring/Avenger/300/Charger/Magnum all still have a 4-speed standard.

So.. some perspective please in terms of the rolling out of greater than 4 speed transmissions. From what I can find, it looks like VW was the first to the midsize segment with a 5-speed automatic in the Passat back in 1998. So please don't make it sound like "OMG! GM IS Teh SUXORS! GM shoulda HAD 5-speeds in '84!!!!@121!"

I dislike the way the rear fenderwells of GM pickups are painted the color of the truck. Especially in lighter colors. The front fenderwells are blacked out. It makes the truck look slightly inexpensive. GM, could you fix this for 2009? Thanks.

I've attached a picture I took previously of a white Sierra at my local dealership. While you are 100% correct that the front wheelwell is blacked out and the rear wheelwell is body color, IMO I don't think it's as horrible as you're making it out to be. I could live with that just fine if I owned one; maybe the aftermarket has addressed this issue?

Actually, the Fusion and Milan only have the 5-speed auto with the 4cyl. The V6 versions have always had the 6-speed auto only.

Just a slight correction.

It's not 'horrible'....just distracting for the eye. These are otherwise very good looking trucks...I'd just get it in black.

I think it must be the very large wheel openings, it's more visible.

I am 100% with you on that, only I would use the word cheap rather than inexpensive.

I had the same concern upon first seeing the 900 pickups, and even bought cans of rubberized undercoating to apply to my truck when I first bought it. I never put it on. A plastic wheelhouse liner could trap dirt, and therefore moisture, in the area, causing early corrosion problems. Simply spraying flat black paint in the area could work, but it may chip from stones, causing an even worse appearance over time. A full coat of bodycolor paint back there seems fine to me, I know the area's protected, yet free to circulate air for a drying effect.

I guess it is still possible that the Tahoe will get the same weight saving features as the hybrid Tahoe? (thinner seats, aluminum hood and liftgate, maybe optional spare tire)

I've ALWAYS thought that should happen...if all these changes help the fuel economy of the Hybrid further, imagine the effect on a regular all gas model, albeit small...but no, not happening. All of what has been, stays as far as its looks and weight.

Um, we are talking about GM's 2009 models. Camry and Jetta, '04? 5 years ago. Accord, '02? 7 years ago. Even the Mazda 6 at '05 - 4 years ago.

4, 5, 6, 7 years ago... That's a long time ago and a hell of a lot of cars sold during those years.

Spin it however you want, GM has been lagging badly in this area.

*waiting patiently for the Silverado 6.2/6speed vs Tundra 5.7/6 speed comparisons*

  • 4 months later...

I think the V8 is available with the Extreme package extended and crew, that's the only 2WD you can order with the 5.3, if I am not mistaken.

Odd thing about the two GMT355s I've seen so far on the lots: A Canyon was identified on the sticker as a WT, with manual windows, etc., black handles&mirrors/chrome bumpers and a rubber floor... but it had "SLE" nameplate on the tailgate... and a Colorado, again marked as "WT", with chrome handles and body color bumpers, grille and mirror caps. I think somebody screwed up on the line with both of those trucks... weird.
