Industry News: Average Age Of Vehicles In U.S. Is Now 11 Years

The average age of a vehicle in the U.S. has hit a record high. According to Experian Automotive, the average age of the 245 million vehicles registered in the U.S. during the first quarter of 2012 was 11 years. That's an increase of just over 2 months when compared to last year.

Experian Automotive goes onto say that more than 52 million cars and trucks in the U.S. are 16 years or older.

Experian Automotive's analysis also found that Ford has the most models on the road compared to any other automaker. That really shouldn't come as a surprise since the Ford F-150 has been the best-selling vehicle in the U.S. for 30 straight years. The top four automakers with the oldest models on the road include;

  • Ford: 17.2%
  • Chevrolet: 15.8%
  • Honda: 10.4%
  • Toyota: 7.3%

The four most popular models are;

  • Ford F-150: 3.4%
  • Honda Accord: 2.6%
  • Toyota Camry: 2.6%
  • Chevrolet Sliverado: 2.0%

Why are there more old vehicles on the road? For one, the recession and sluggish recovery has caused people put off buying or trading-in for a new or used car. Also, vehicles are just better built. During the 90's, improvement in quality picked up serious momentum.

It's a good thing...the MINI is 10 years old, the Miata is 11, my work truck is 11, my other work truck is 16 years old, wife/son's car is a 2005 but has almost 200k....

And all of them pretty much have the wheels driven off of them...;work trucks are going 6-7 days a week, the cars are regularly beaten into submission on an autocross course....and we just keep chugging along....

2 12 yr old cars in my driveway (Grand Cherokee and my sister's DTS), and the two older Mercs in the back driveway. Reliable, paid for cars are nice...but eventually going to have to get something new(er).

I see perhaps the 2015 Mustang or Camaro, which should be lighter and more nimble....that I could see in your driveway.

Either that or just break down and buy a current generation Boss 302....perhaps the best pony car ever....

My oldest is a 94 GMC Suburban and my newest is a 2006 Escalade ESV. I truly have loved some of the new auto's GM has come out with, but fitting into them is a problem for my 6'6" tall frame.

They are building them better, but also they are building them smaller and us big guys will hold onto our old roomy dependable and no Nanny Electronic Auto's!!!

So, that probably includes vehicles like my 1929 Willy's Knight that gets driven less then 100 miles per year? My two cars have an average age of 41.5. A '12 Fusion an the '29 Willy's Knight.

With how some go on & on about how unilaterally better modern tin is (not to mention the average transaction price), I would think by extrapolation, the average age would be closer to 20 yrs old. :P

My car is 12 years old now, which means I've owned it for half its life. That's pretty cool.

The Prizm is 18 years old.

The Grand Marquis is 19 years old.

I think the Camry is 15 years old.

Naw, not the Toughest, just people are sold on a cheap ass plastic interior with rubberband and twin body on frame and a Lego Engine. Cheap to fix, so the bulk of people buy em. ;)

Ya know that this just drives home the need to move to CNG. Hold a car for 11 years and the amount of money saved if freakin amazing! :D

Actually I think Mercedes Benz, Volvo, and BMW have the longest average lasting cars on the road, but there are more old Fords on the road largely because so many ugly rusted F150's run forever...

Ya know that this just drives home the need to move to CNG. Hold a car for 11 years and the amount of money saved if freakin amazing! :D

      If you happen to have a pre-production Honda Civic Type R just sitting around, what would you do with it? If you happen to an engineer in special projects division at Honda's Swindon plant in the U.K., you decide to make it into a pickup.
      Codenamed ‘Project P’, the Type R pickup made its debut at the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) Test Day. To create this truck, the special projects division changed everything from the b-pillar to the back to install a bed with diamond-plate metal bed and a set of rollbars. The big rear wing is retained.
      The rest of the vehicle is pretty much identical to the standard Type R with a turbocharged 2.0L inline-four producing 306 horsepower, six-speed manual transmission, and adaptive suspension. Honda says the truck can hit 60 mph in 6.5 seconds and hit a top speed of 165 mph - just 5 mph slower than the standard Civic Type R.
      "We have a special projects division at the factory in Swindon and this project was a fantastic opportunity for the team to show just what their creative minds could do. The passion that our engineers have for Honda is shown in our latest creation and we are even considering taking it to the Nurburgring to see if we can take the record for the fastest front wheel drive pickup truck!” said Alyn James, project lead.
      Before someone asks, Honda explicitly states in the press release "no plans to put the concept into production."

      Created by the team behind Synchro Motorsport at the Swindon factory Potentially one of the fastest pickup trucks on UK roads No plans to put concept into production Honda UK has stolen the show at the annual SMMT Test Day this year by showcasing a Civic Type R Pickup Truck concept, almost a year after the launch of the standard road car.
      Built by a specialist team from the Product Engineering department at the Honda of the UK Manufacturing (HUM) factory in Swindon and codenamed ‘Project P’, the Civic Type R Pickup Truck has been modified and developed from the standard road car to create potentially one of the fastest pickup trucks on UK roads.
      To create the Project P concept, the team used a pre-production version and adapted the design rearwards from the B-pillars of the car, with sweeping lines from the roofline to the back hiding a flatbed loading area in the centre of the car where the rear seats and boot space would normally be.
      Finished in Rallye Red, the concept retains the iconic rear wing associated with both the FK2 and FK8 Civic Type R, which, in a clever piece of engineering, is movable to allow direct and unfettered access to the rear of the truck.
      Using the same powertrain, suspension and gearbox as the standard road car, it is estimated Project P will complete the 0-62mph sprint in under six seconds and reach a top speed of over 165mph. It also possesses the same driving modes of comfort, Sport and +R, Project P offering both ride comfort as well as a unique racing capability on track.

      Award Worthiness Confirmed for Motor Trend 2017 Car of the Year - Chevrolet BOLT

      Motor Trend plugged in their long term Chevrolet Bolt tester 13 months ago and today they announced that they have confirmed it lived up to every expectation of being the 2017 Car of the Year. It was not just a good affordable EV that eliminated range anxiety but after 17,000 miles deserved to be praised!
      They do state that the CUV was not perfect as they had two software updates that fixed issues and the shifter was replaced. With that said, maintenance for the year was $0. Cost of powering the EV CUV which had a total of 154 charges cost a total of $630.58 using 69 charges at the office, 47 charges at public for pay stations and 27 times at home. This compares to driving the same distance in a Toyota Prius that would cost $800 and a Kia Soul that would cost you $1,550 dollars.
      Over all the write up is very good with plenty of interesting info on living with an EV auto. As they state, the only EV available today for under $40,000 that you can go buy and drive off the lot same day. The motor trend staff is ready to make the switch.

      Bolt = $52.55 per month
      Prius = $66.67 per month

A new report from Autocar has some possible new details on the vehicle.
      The Mach 1 crossover currently has the codename of CX430 and will likely have some design cues inspired by the Mustang. Underpinning the model will be Ford's C2 platform. Currently, this platform is being used for the next-generation Focus and Escape crossover.
      The Mach 1 is part of Ford's plan to launch 16 electric vehicles by 2022.
