Kia News: Kia Renames The K9 To Quoris For The Rest Of The World

Kia's flagship sedan, the K9 will have a change of name when it goes on sale in select countries in the fourth quarter of 2012. The name; Quoris.

"Derived from the English words 'core' and 'quality', the name of our new flagship sedan hints at the attributes at the very heart of the vehicle. The word 'Quoris' conveys solidity, luxury and high-technology, all resonating together as a chorus," said Thomas Oh, Kia's Executive Vice President & COO of the International Business Division. "Our decision to give this striking new sedan an unconventional name means it will stand out even further from the established crowd, driving Kia sales in what is a new segment of the global automotive market for Kia."

Now, I might be the only person who liked the name K9. But the name Quoris is just terrible. Its about the same level of terribleness as Amati.

Okay, lets get off the name for the time being. The Quoris will be available with full adaptive cruise control, a collision warning and mitigation system, blind spot detection and lane departure warning, and a multi-camera system.

(SEOUL) July 18, 2012 – Kia's striking, rear-wheel drive, all-new flagship sedan will be called 'Quoris' when it goes on sale in overseas markets from the fourth quarter of 2012.

The new luxury model (known as 'K9' in the domestic market) went on sale in Korea in early May, and features a host of high-tech comfort and safety features, many of them never seen before on a Kia.

"Derived from the English words 'core' and 'quality', the name of our new flagship sedan hints at the attributes at the very heart of the vehicle," commented Thomas Oh, Kia's Executive Vice President & COO of the International Business Division. "The word 'Quoris' conveys solidity, luxury and high-technology, all resonating together as a chorus.

"Our decision to give this striking new sedan an unconventional name means it will stand out even further from the established crowd, driving Kia sales in what is a new segment of the global automotive market for Kia," adds Mr. Oh.

Innovative 'active' safety technologies

The Kia Quoris will feature an array of high-tech driving assistance and active safety features.

"Quoris adopts a number of intelligent safety technologies never before seen on a Kia, in order to deliver maximum driver comfort and safety," comments Chang-Ki Kang, Senior Vice President of Kia's Namyang R&D Center. "The Quoris can cruise at a desired speed, maintain a pre-determined 'safe' distance from the vehicle in front, and even come to a complete stop if necessary. Quoris can also detect and warn the driver of approaching potential hazards using innovative audio, visual and haptic alerts.

"Our new flagship sedan possesses remarkable abilities to monitor and detect changing traffic conditions, and is constantly processing information, immediately deciding the right course of action and precisely executing vehicle movement controls as necessary," concludes Kang.

Advanced Smart Cruise Control (ASCC)

The Quoris employs Kia's first radar-based Advanced Smart Cruise Control (ASCC). Located in the right side of the front bumper, the radar system constantly monitors the road ahead, up to a range of 174 meters.

With ASCC activated, the Quoris monitors traffic conditions and speed in order to maintain a pre-determined safe distance from the vehicle ahead. The driver can easily adjust this distance by choosing from four options (52, 40, 32 or 25 meters at a speed of 90 km/h) using a button on the steering wheel.

The Quoris will also automatically come to a complete stop, if necessary. When the stop is less than three seconds and traffic ahead moves off, the Quoris automatically moves forward, resuming the journey. For a stop longer than three seconds, the driver has to manually restart the vehicle by pressing the accelerator or pushing the resume button.

Advanced Vehicle Safety Management (AVSM)

The ASCC is linked to the rest of the vehicle controls by the Quoris' Advanced Vehicle Safety Management (AVSM).

Integrating the control of various vehicle monitoring systems, including the Electronic Stability Control (ESC), seatbelt mechanisms and multiple warning systems, the AVSM can alert the driver, pre-pressurize the braking system and activate the Pre-Safe Belt (PSB) system, depending on the anticipated level of a collision risk.

Detecting a risk of a collision, AVSM warns the driver in three stages via a loud audible alarm, a visual warning on both the Head Up Display (HUD) and TFT LCD cluster and a haptic signal on the seatbelt.

Stage 1 At a low level of collision risk, a visual warning appears on the LCD cluster and HUD.

Stage 2 At a higher level of collision risk, in addition to the visual warning, an audio warning signal is sent out and the haptic seatbelt is activated via an electric motor, sending strong vibrations through the driver's seatbelt.

Stage 3 When a collision is imminent, the AVSM automatically applies the brakes to reduce the impact speed. The electric motor and pre-tensioners of the PSB system are also activated to retract the seatbelt and hold occupants closer to their seats, ensuring maximum occupant protection and minimizing abrasions caused by contact with the airbags.

Class-leading Blind Spot Detection with Lane Change Assistance

The Blind Spot Detection (BSD) system for Quoris features two radar scanners located in each of the outer corners of the rear bumper. Each is capable of detecting objects up to 70 meters away from the rear, and four meters from each side.

Activated at vehicle speeds above 30 kph, BSD gives the driver a warning when a vehicle comes into the blind spot zone – an area approximately four meters wide along each side of the Quoris and extending more than six meters from the rear bumper.

Compared with sonic-based BSD systems, Quoris' radar-based BSD gives a longer detection range, which is also exploited by the Lane Change Assistance (LCA) system. LCA alerts the driver to vehicles approaching from the rear at high speeds from up to 70 meters away.

If the system also considers the speed of approach to be a potential hazard – specifically if it calculates that a collision would occur within 4.5 seconds if no avoiding action is taken – it will illuminate a warning triangle graphic in the left or right door mirror glass and activate a warning signal on the HUD. If the driver does not react to this visual 'alert', an audible warning is also sounded.

Both the BSD and LCA systems can be deactivated by the driver, if required.

Lane Departure Warning System

While radars boast a superior ability to detect objects at long distances, cameras are used in Quoris to recognize the shape of closer objects such as lane markings.

A forward-facing video camera is at the heart of the new sedan's Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS). It monitors the car's position in relation to lane markings and triggers a warning in case of unintended lane departures at speeds above 60 kph.

Around View Monitor system

Four cameras on each side of Quoris are used to create its class-leading Around View Monitor (AVM) system, which provides maximum convenience and safety during parking and low-speed maneuvering.

Unlike the majority of competitors' AVM systems with a field-of-view of less than a 270-degrees, the Quoris' system offers a true 360-degree all-around view in eight different viewing modes, displayed on the Audio Video Navigation (AVN) monitor.

Continuously synthesizing images from four cameras, the AVM provides a virtual 'top' view in motion, so the driver can easily have a full grasp of all his or her surroundings, maximizing safety for the car occupants as well as pedestrians. The AVM system automatically deactivates at speeds above 20 km/h.

So this will have Hyundai and KIA competing against each other for luxury buyers? I thought KIA was destined to be the volume brand.

Bad name, too hard to pronounce, and no one will know what it means. This car looks too much like an Asian BMW with an ugly grill. The Optima is a good looking car, they should have made it look like an Optima but maybe more flashy so it stands out. I had high hopes for this car because so few make a somewhat affordable RWD luxury car, but this is a disappointment. I dont' find BMW's all that good looking, and this looks like an ugly version of a 7-series.

No mention in the press release of powertrain either.

Stupid name... K9 would be so much more fun!!!

If KIA felt they'll need to ram some serious incentves into consumers in order to move it out of dealres they should have called it the KY :smilewide:

WOW, The name just screams thug. A name you would pick up in prison.

What the hell with all the freaking SOB nanny technology. As a driver, I DO NOT need a car telling me what I can and cannot do.

Again, driving is a privilege and I do not need a car telling me to be alert and know what is going on around me. Drivers need to wake up to the fact that they have a responsibility to be aware of what is around them, not just be along for the ride as a driver of a Dumbmobile!

This is the best name ever, because everything Hyundai/Kia does is awesome. If you don't like the way it sounds, it's because there's something wrong with your ears. If you don't like saying it, perhaps you should get your mouth checked out.

All joking aside, the name is awful, as is the car.

I like the looks of this car better than the Genesis...

I do see the poser BMW in their grill but it screams cheap to me still just like the Genesis. They both just do nothing to say I am a Luxury car. Maybe their engineers are watching to much Anime! :P

These are first attempts at luxury cars from both of these companies. The original Lexus LS was an S-class knock off, the Infiniti Q had a profile like a 7-series, and the Acura Legend wasn't that far off from an Audi 5000 in look though they did differ in size.

      KIA - 48V Diesel Mild-Hybrid Powertrain 2018

      Kia announced this week their first 48V diesel mild-hybrid powertrain that will start shipping in the second half of 2018. This system uses a new Starter-Generator system in their auto's that is designed to fit seamlessly into consumers lives with no plug-in recharging required.
      The Kia Sportage is the first model to get this new diesel mild-hybrid powertrain shipping in the 2nd half of 2018 with the Kia Ceed getting the same powertrain in 2019.
      Kia states this is the start of their 2025 electrification strategy that will find a total of 16 auto's all with advanced powertrains covering their lineup by 2025. This breaks down to five hybrids, five plug-in hybrids, five battery-electric auto's and one fuel cell electric auto.
      Kia states this new hybrid powertrain is designed to fit into existing vehicle architecture, minimising the impact on their product portfolio.

      Back at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, Kia rolled out the Niro EV concept. Aside from the wild design cues, the Niro EV concept featured a 150 kW (201 horsepower) electric motor and 64 kWh battery pack. Range was estimated at 231 miles. 
      Just a couple of days ago, Kia revealed the production version of the Niro EV. Unsurprisingly, the electric version doesn't look significantly different from the hybrid/plug-in hybrid Niros. The only changes are a closed-off, body-colored grille with a door for charging port; faux grilles on the front and rear bumpers, and LED foglights.
      The Niro EV features Kia's new electric powertrain that includes an electric motor with a 64 kWh lithium-polymer battery pack. Overall range is estimated at 450 kilometers (about 280 miles) on the World Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP). Expect the EPA estimate to be slightly lower. There will also be 39.2 kWh battery available that is said to offer a range of more than 300 kilometers.
      We expect to have more details on the Niro EV such as power ratings and a release timeframe when the Niro EV debuts at the Paris Motor Show in September.

      Kia revealed some details and pictures of the upcoming K900 flagship sedan that will be debuting next week at the New York Auto Show.
      The K900's new body was styled in California and Korea. It has slightly more presence than the outgoing model with a front grille featuring 176 jewel-like “cells,” and new LED headlights. The back looks Mercedes-esq with similar styling for the trunk and taillights. Kia has extended the K900's wheelbase by 60-millimeters (about 2.3-inches), which is similar to a Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
      We also got a first look at the K900's interior thanks to someone leaking out the brochure for the Korean-market K900. Compared to the outgoing model, the new K900 has a modern and clean looking dashboard with less buttons and a strip of real wood trim. Two 12.3-inch displays are used - one for the instrument cluster and the other for the infotainment system.
      The KDM brochure reveals that that K900 will offer a 3.6L V6, twin-turbo 3.3L V6, and 5.0L V8 engines. We think the 3.3T and 5.0L V8 engines will be available for the U.S. market.
      We'll have more details when the K900 rolls out on March 28th.

      Kia reveals first glimpse of all-new K900 luxury sedan
      Kia releases first images of new flagship luxury sedan Rich, sophistacted design and balanced proportions ensure a strong on-road presence for K900 Analog clock developed exclusively by Swiss watch brand Maurice Lacroix Minimalist interior with advanced in-car technologies, new Human Machine Interface (HMI) and co-developed Pantone customizable mood lighting Kia Motors has revealed the design of the all-new K900 today in a series of exterior and interior images. The all-new K900 has been created in close collaboration between Kia’s global design headquarters in Namyang, Korea and the brand’s U.S. design studio in Irvine, California. The new model will make its world debut at the New York International Auto Show later on March 28.
      Exterior design and the Gravity of Prestige
      Combining a beautifully balanced design with elegant, flowing lines and geometric details, the K900 introduces a modern air of elegance and gravitas to the large sedan segment. Kia’s designers were inspired by the ‘Gravity of Prestige’ design concept, which exudes strength through rich detail and solid surfaces.  Based conceptually on the the changing shape of condensed energy, a new ‘Quadric pattern’ signature grille – seen for the first time today – is the focal point of the K900. Embodying the K900’s design concept, the grille contains 176 jewel-like ‘cells’, suggestive of released energy accelerating away from its center.
      Lines in the high-strength steel bodywork flow naturally from the grille, rising over the hood and, in profile, sweeping through to the rear flanks before meeting at the back.
      Geometric design details add an element of modernity and technology. Evoking the trajectory of light, the design of the ‘Duplex’ LED headlamps provides the K900 with a  visually progressive, high-prestige image. In profile, a chrome flash adds visual depth to the smooth bodywork, running along the base of the doors and around the lower rear section of the K900. The chrome window-line adds a degree of technicality and structure to the free-flowing C-pillar before it merges with the rear deck. The tail lights and exhaust housings are also finished with fine chrome details.
      A key element in the design of the all-new K900 comes from its new platform and elongated proportions. Longer and wider than its predecessor, the wheelbase of the new model has been extended by 60mm (2.3 inches) to 3,105mm (122.2 inches), while both the front and rear overhangs are shorter, pushing the wheels further out to the corners of the car. This subtle change to the K900’s proportions is a strong expression of space, while underpinning improvements in ride quality and creating greater passenger room on the inside.
      Elegant, minimalist and innovative interior
      Elegant by design, and with a high-class, minimalist layout, the interior of the new K900 provides the driver and passengers with a peaceful retreat in which to spend time. Kia has also developed a series of more expressive features for occupants to enjoy.
      Kia has created a refined and luxurious cabin which wraps around the driver, enhancing the sense of being cocooned from the outside world. Flowing from the center of the dash and outwards to the doors, surfaces are trimmed in a sophisticated combination of materials, with soft-touch surfaces, a blend of highly tactile wood and metal veneers, and genuine leather throughout the interior.
      The cabin is designed to offer greater space and comfort than ever before. The all-new K900’s longer, wider exterior proportions provides a more spacious cabin for occupants than its predecessor, while seats are trimmed in genuine leather, with smooth and quilted surfaces enhancing the prestige aspect of the interior.
      The K900’s 12.3-inch HMI screen is integrated in such a way as to enhance a sense of calm and serenity on-board, with a bezel-less display and simplified switchgear layout. At the base of the center console, the driver can also use a manual dial to rotate through on-screen functions. Inspired by the simplicity of fine watch design, the K900 dashboard also houses an elegant analog clock, developed specifically for the new model through an exclusive collaboration with Swiss luxury watch brand, Maurice Lacroix.
      The HMI features a new intelligent lighting control with proximity sensors, only illuminating the dashboard when it detects the driver’s hand reaching for a switch. Drivers can also adapt the cabin of the new K900 to personal preferences with a new mood lighting system. The new K900 is the first car in the world to incorporate an ambient lighting system developed in partnership with the Pantone Color Institute, the global authority on color. Customizable on the move, the subtle ambient lighting floods the interior in one of seven colors, jointly developed by Kia and the Pantone Color Institute. Drivers can also choose from 64 unique settings to adapt light levels throughout the car. Harmonizing with the cabin’s design, the glow of the lights creates a truly contemporary ambience while providing stability and rest for K900 occupants.
      The all-new Kia K900 will be manufactured in Korea and will go on sale across selected global markets from the second quarter of 2018.

      While automakers are going crazy in terms planning new crossovers, Kia is showing some restraint. Speaking with Wards Auto, Orth Hedrick, vice president of product planning for Kia Motors America said the company doesn't see an opportunity to introduce an A-Segment crossover.
      “I don’t think we see an opportunity there. We have a lot of coverage in the marketplace now, and that is not a priority at this point. I think we would see more opportunity in C-segment (CUVs) then we would in A- or B-(segment models),” said Hedrick.
      Kia will also not join Hyundai with entering the pickup truck market.
      “It’s a big step to take and I think it’s a major commitment.” 
      Hedrick points out that Nissan and Toyota have had issues in trying make a dent into the stronghold of large pickups by Ford, GM, and Ram.
      "It’s a fierce battle. You have to go into it eyes wide open,” said Hedrick.
      One interesting tidbit from Ward Auto's piece is that Kia is considering doing something similar to Hyundai's N performance sub-brand.
