2019 Toyota Avalon Hybrid Limited, front fascia
Robert Hall commented on William Maley's gallery image in gallery_category_3
I guess the only positive to overwrought Toyota (and Lexus) front ends is as a driver you can't see them from the driver's seat. The vertical elements at the edges remind me of similar nonsense on the Silverado. They should have made the grille fill the entire front with the headlights inset into it... -

Industry News: NHTSA Testing Mirrorless Cars
Robert Hall replied to Drew Dowdell's topic in Industry News
Yeah, I had to replace a whole mirror assembly on my Jeep when the lower surround of it was cracked. Was $380 to replace (incl. labor). Have to take off the interior door panel to unbolt it and disconnect the wires.. -
Alternative Fuels & Propulsion RANDOM
Robert Hall replied to G. David Felt's topic in Electric Vehicles and Alternative Fuels
I got the extended warranty on my CPO Jeep for 7 years/100,000 miles. I don't plan to keep it past 100,000 miles so I figured it was worth it. -
Compact and midsize mainstream BEV CUVs could go a ways towards mainstreaming BEVs. A subcompact like the Bolt is limited in appeal.

I was only thinking about real world consumer sales... I don't know if the military market accounts for much anymore for LR...militaries seem to use a lot of custom build stuff anymore..- 6 replies

Land Rover News: Land Rover Defender Leaks Out
Robert Hall replied to Drew Dowdell's topic in Land Rover
Probably a handful off road fans in the UK care about solid axles, but I suspect 99.99% of potential buyers don't care.... it just doesn't matter...the Explorer has never been a serious off-roader, hasn't had a solid axle in a few generations, the Grand Cherokee lost it's solid front axle in '05 w/ the WK generation, etc.- 6 replies

Wish I had mad phat Photoshop skillz.... like to see how a Bolt would look if the front looked like a scaled-down Silverado HD. Or with a Camaro inspired front like the Blazer.

Salt corrosion. I remember that style of Clark stations in small towns in Ohio back in the 70s-90s, but in color.

I think so. The two sedans towards the back. No idea why they would be in Ohio in the 60s though. Edit: That pic came from a website about the PIB races, but I suspect they grabbed a pic from a later Australian race—the Valiant appears RHD. And there is a 65 Mustang in there, and the last PIB race was 63. When I was out there yesterday, I saw several markers that indicated the route of the original races, and I remembered a Road & Track article I’d read about it years ago. A neat footnote in the history of racing in Ohio.

Found some pics of racing at Put-in-Bay in the early 1960s..they are having a vintage sports car race event next month, may go to that.

Yeah, I couldn't imagine buying a vehicle without actually seeing it in person or test driving it. When I bought my CPO JGC in 2017, I did a bunch of research online and checked the inventories of the various dealers around Phoenix and zeroed in on a specific vehicle that had the right equipment/mileage/price combo that I was looking for. Didn't seriously consider any other brands. Then I went to the dealer on a Friday afternoon and asked to see and test drive that specific vehicle. I was time bound in some sense in that I was in the midst of moving to Ohio and my old Jeep was dying, so I moved pretty quickly. A lot of people buy used cars on eBay and other sites and have them shipped to them, haven't tried that yet, not sure if I would.

I do kind of miss some aspects of the pre-internet era as far as cars in that new cars were released usually around the same time every year... and the magazines would always have their new car issues which were full of surprises..always looked forward to Car & Driver's annual 'Charting the Changes' issue. Today with new car announcements year round and online it's all pretty predicable and nothing is a surprise...

Yeah, it's always jarring to hear music I enjoyed in college that was called 'alternative rock' then (Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, etc) referred to as 'classic rock'...

My local FCA dealer remodeled their waiting room in the last year..it's pretty decent now, adjacent to the showroom w/ a nice coffee machine and tvs. The previous one looked like it was left over from the 70s--was right next to the service bays and service counter and very loud w/ grubby carpeting. When I went in for an oil change, mirror replacement and other maintenance in June I camped out a few hours w/ my laptop and worked and it was fine.

A couple random observations whilst watching a good British police drama (Line of Duty) this past week.... the Brits do seem to love their estates (wagons)...the Ford Mondeo and Vauxhall Insignia wagons have sharp, striking shapes.. And the trope about M-B taxis even pops up in a TV drama...one character (a lawyer) was driving a black late model Mercedes E-class sedan while spying on his wife, and there is a line about a random person walking up to it thinking it's a 'minicab' (British for private taxi/black car service).

Another beautiful summer weekend. Cool and sunny. Another trip to the islands, went to Put-in-Bay (South Bass Island) yesterday. Lake Erie was choppy on the ferry crossing, lots of spray on the deck. Saw this neat Eldorado convertible w/ a rumble seat. Also saw a white and gray Rolls Royce Wraith coupe on the freeway..what a beast. I've read have a Sunday old car cruise around the island every Sunday during the summer...will have to come back on a Sunday and check out the cruise and the car museum also. Had lunch at The Keys---a Florida Keys-themed bar...pretty good Mojito and Cuban sandwich. Not sure how it started, but Put-in-Bay markets itself as the Key West of Ohio...lots of bars and a couple wineries. Fun place...pics of the War of 1812 Perrys Monument, a marker outside The Keys that is reminiscent of the one in Key West, and a pic from the ferry heading back to the mainland yesterday afternoon...I could spend all summer in the islands.

The Bolt seems like it would make a decent city car...but it's really tiny, goofy looking and pricey. Maybe a restyle w/ squared off mini-Silverado front end styling would help...

Lincoln News: Pair of EVs Spells Death For Continental
Robert Hall replied to Drew Dowdell's topic in Lincoln
They are sharp cars, one of those cars that looks much better in person than in photos...I made a run to Ace Hardware this morning and drove past a house where an older guy was out mowing his lawn, had his garage door open...a new burgundy Continental was sitting in the garage next to a late 80s Town Car in a similar color.
