'only' $47k? What reality are you in? For most people, that's not a small amount of money...5 points

Yeah... my friend wasn't thrilled about that, but nonetheless, he shelled out the money, like Tesla banked on.4 points

Eventually, I would expect all new parking garages will be required to be built with a lot of EV chargers in it. It will be an additional revenue source for them.4 points

So the code name for the 7.3 is supposedly Godzilla. I believe it is the first new Ford pushrod V8 family since the 335 series and 385 series over 50 years ago.4 points

ReAlLy? Ram makes due with 1.0L less displacement in their 6 cyl and they make 400hp and 1000lb-ft or torque. Ford makes due with 1.0L less displacement and they make 450hp and 935lb-ft or torque Chevy makes due with 1.1L less displacement and they make 445hp and 910lb-ft of torque. Tell Mercedes if they need any pointers to come across the pond.3 points

You still fail to understand how horsepower works. This is going to be a relatively slow turning torque monster, not a high horsepower high revving engine. Gotta have high revs for high horsepower and that just isn't a good recipe for a tow truck.3 points

In another thread, @ocnblu suggested that charge points would go unused. Every day this week at work the two lots that I park in that have EV charge points have had every single charge point occupied when I arrived at work with some other EVs and PHEVs parked nearby waiting. Clearly, we already need more charge points.3 points

Be interesting to see how these multi-function tail gates really survive in the real world of hard use.3 points

There is the Cadillac CTS-V for that ballsy nature you folk crave for. The Grand National was a Regal, but not a GS. It was a GN. (Grand National) The top dog was a GNX. (X as in experimental as in Grand National experimental) And those were muscle cars. The fullsized GSs of the 1960s were touring cars with gobs of torque. One could say fullsized muscle cars. The Skylark's GS was a true midsizer muscle car. None of those Buicks that I mentioned were sport sedans. Therefore, as a REGAL, a GS Regal, the lineage did really start with the W-Body... And THIS iteration is the best one yet. We WANT to dream that a Riviera GS was a sports sedan. But it was a luxo-barge personal coupe. We want to dream that 1960s and 1970s Century and Wildcat GSs were sports sedans, but they were land-yachts. We have fooled ourselves into believing something that does not exist. A Regal GS is exactly what I posted...ANY GS for that matter are just cars that drive comfortably over long hauls...and GM NEVER hinted other wise with this new Regal. We concocted a tale in our heads. Germany sourced? Buick NEVER advertised that in the open. Never hinted it had German sport sedan Nurburgring lap times as its strengths. THAT kind of thing was openly sold for the V Series Cadillacs. Im just defending this new Regal's honour. I feel like someone has to do it. I think this new Regal GS is unfairly judged. I try my best to do good for it.3 points

Throw some meatier tires on it and have fun... ? LOve that color combo Like the lack of chrome on my Equinox too....3 points

There's one super overlooked feature is that the GS like the liftback has 67 cu ft of cargo. That is equal to Nox, Envison and Terrain, with moar legrooms and better interior than all 3 of them.3 points

Some cool reads I found today: Lowrider culture in Japan: https://jalopnik.com/welcome-to-the-wild-world-of-tokyos-underground-lowride-1826096379 Check out the amazing amount of Land Yachts, mostly GM but some very cool stuff that shows up in the Shibuya district. Very Cool read with plenty of pictures of Snowmobile Model T's. https://jalopnik.com/nothing-says-comfortable-winter-driving-like-snowmobile-18323709242 points

Look I went all out and explained my point of view on the Regal GS. I love the car's handling, looks, and interior.. just think the engine could be more powerful. As a daily driver it would certainly suffice. Possibly more so than even my Impala, which is fast on its own with an earlier version of the 3.6L. In a smaller car.. hell in the Camaro RS.. it works.. is a quick lil whip.. but I just think that if the GS is the TOP.. the TOP performance vehicle in the Buick line it should be afforded the TT3.6L. The Kia is not my thing. I find it weird looking, derivative, its a Hyundai, which I hate almost as much as Toyota, if not equally.. and if I wanted a NEW RWD Sedan for almost $40K I'd just go get a Charger RT.. if NEW wasn't a necessity.. I'd go get a used '14-16 CTS-VSport.. a used '16-17 Chevy SS.. a used '13 CTS-V.. So many options.2 points

That sounds like it is specific to Tesla sales though. No reason you couldn't also buy a Tesla from a local Buick-GMC-Cadillac dealer.2 points
-
This was mostly from the Rich Rebuilds podcast about his experience buying a used Model X, but IIRC things like waiting months for the car to be delivered locally (w/ Tesla providing dates that kept changing), lack of photographs of the car, poor communication over the phone w/ untrained people, cars stored at a 3rd party auction lot, etc. Seems like core issues are that Tesla doesn't have used car lots or used car sales processes like normal dealers.. from comments it sounds like it's not an isolated event.2 points
-
Even if it did, it probably also makes great torque at 1700rpm also. You always manage to bring Mercedes into a thread somehow..... total fanboi.2 points

I’m good Drew but I’m not the one who went sideways on this. Carry on. It’s called “elitism” and “overcompensation” but that’s neither here nor there. You are right though. That is not a small amount of money and I’ll be damn if I’m going to “swipe that gold card” or get into a $800 a month car payment on a USED CAR, no matter how bad ass it is.2 points

I get the feeling that the 7.3 liter V8 will put out about 50 more hp and torque than the 3.5 liter V6 in the Navigator. I think it sad if any engine isn’t over 100 hp per liter so that V8 better make at least 730 hp and 730 lb-ft.2 points
-
My feelings exactly. We will just skip over the part where my wife and I traded in her nightmare HHR for a much better Kia Soul (what she wanted). That doesn't mean that I hate GM or Chevy. It just means that they have produced some garbage over the years, just like everyone else, and I will point it out when I feel it is necessary. Oh, and so as to get back on track here, swap "GS" for a genuine "GNX", and we have a winner!2 points

I'll be sure to do that junior, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PHOENIX DESERT where I live. Seriously, get a clue already. It's old. My criticisms of GM are 100% valid whether I own a Cadillac right now or not. I'll be sure to get right on a car payment that would be higher than my mortgage. Oh wait, I'm not an idiot. BTW, it's either gun metal gray or nothing at all but thanks for taking to time to stalk my buying habits. It also doesn't need to be a "V" as much as it is on my bucket list of cars. A 3.6L will work for now, thank you very much. I was trying not to be a "D" about it because I am not here for the endless back and forth. Like I said, I made my point and if the fanboys want to rant on, then they can rant on to themselves. I will keep on saying what I am saying. I was a "known Ford fan" you know?2 points

Maxwell Technologies has announced their definitive merger agreement with Tesla, Inc. This is a $218 million dollar all-stock deal which put a value of $4.75 per share on the Maxwell common stock. To quote the news announcement from Maxwell; Tesla CEO Elon Musk is on record saying that ultracapacitors could provide a more likely bet for a breakthrough in energy storage than batteries. Maxwell Ultracapacitors can hold up to 300 watt-hours of electricity per kilogram. This represents 20% more storage than Tesla's largest battery cell pack. Maxwell is also on record saying that their Ultracapacitors have the potential to store more than double the energy by mass versus Tesla's current cell design and will allow Tesla to ramp up the density and speed factor of their auto's while greatly reducing the time to recharge. Looking at where Tesla is today and for the future, this purchase has to be also based on the fact that Maxwell Ultracapacitors use solid-state technology with no flammable electrolytes or rare earth minerals such as cobalt. One also has to think that this could be a hedge as Panasonic is on record as saying they will not have solid state batteries for about 10 years unlike Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, Fisker, Dyson and other auto companies who have stated they will have solid state batteries in their electric vehicles between 2022 and 2025. Maxwell is also the ultracapacitor supplier to Geely, the parent company of Volvo where they will be used in Volvo's plug-in hybrids. Maxwell has also announced that they will showcase their Ultracapacitor storage system at Key Q1 2019 Grid and Utility Events such as DistribuTECH in New Orleans and Energy Storage Europe in Germany. To quote their press release: This one could take as a sign of how Tesla will grow their own home and business storage business with Solar. Musk in the most recent earning's call stated he thinks Tesla's energy storage business is to be one of their big growth areas this year.1 point

Hi there! I'll admit writing this feels somewhat awkward as I really don't like talking about myself. Most of the time, I'm churning out news stories and reviews for various places. But this is somewhat important. Next week, I'll be starting a new job with JATO Dynamics as a Specifications Researcher. Basically, I'll be digging into the various information about features, options, and other information on new vehicles. This may seem somewhat odd to be moving from a writing position to doing a bit of research, but it actually uses a lot of the skills and knowledge that I have gathered from being a freelancer. Also, I've been feeling slightly burnt out in terms of the writing. I've noticed that it has been taking me slightly longer to get various pieces out, along with doing anything that is sort of creative and not sounding like a MadLibs. Now for the big question, what does this mean for Cheers & Gears? For now, I'll be taking a bit of a break from writing. I won't be giving up the ghost, but not doing a constant stream of news that I have been able to do since going freelance full time since 2012. I'll still be getting various news pieces, along with reviews and the odd opinion piece up. But I hope this break allows me to recharge and get back on writing somewhat more consistent and creative. I just want to say thanks to you, the members and readers of Cheers & Gears for somehow being able to put up with my writing for quite some time. It has been fun and something I enjoy, even when the thread somehow goes off the rails.1 point

Fascinating that so many of those stock framed/bodied cars were shredded, the driver's drove in a helmet & a button-up or t-shirt (no other safety gear at ALL), yet the majority walked away. Also pretty incredible these were all factory production blocks/transmissions/axles, doing 180 MPH.1 point

I agree that more charge points are needed, I see the ones on Seattle's city Streets are always being used and the 8 charge points here at my works are always full with a waiting line of EV / PHEVs that will be notified when the their turn to charge is ready.1 point

I saw two in under 5 minutes the other day in downtown Pittsburgh. Those were attractive cars. Very nearly bought one.1 point

I think GMC's is better because it is more useful. Technically, the Ridgeline is in this class too since its tailgate opens two ways1 point

It's nice to see more innovation but I think overall I like the GMC's much better. I would definitely rather have this over a regular tailgate, fwiw.1 point

Best wishes and good luck. Congrats in your new position. I am sure you will find it rewarding.1 point

Eh, the last Buick with balls was the Grand National, period. And I agree, nothing wrong with a good road car-something one can simply enjoy the ride in. Catch is, the wanted sporty and fast with the GS. First try, cool-and nice/ Second try- Meh.......... Also based on the fact the three you mention are “compact” CUVs...Regal is more of a mid sizer......1 point

I feel for you as a fellow (former) GM lifer. (I say former because I put my money where my mouth is and my last few car purchases were NOT GM cars, so if I was honest about this whole GM lifer thing, I cant call myself a GM lifer since I havent bought any GM cars in a while...) But...to compare market share from the 1940s-1970s to today's world is not a very good metric on how good GM, or in this case, a Regal GS is... And this is where my ranting is directed to all who wanna diss on the new Regal GS... I posted something similar a couple of pages ago, but all of you just prefer to go an a pissing rant about the GS WITH NO MERITS...and ignore me. Well...I aint going away!!! You all want a GS...a REAL GS whatever the phoque that means?! THIS was the last "REAL" AMERICAN Regal GS Yes...GS. THAT is what a GS has stood for since the late 1980s early 1990s. Beccause the last GS before that one was A W-Body front driver... This new one is a million times better in EVERY way. No. No it does NOT have 400 horsepower with 400 ft/pounds of torque. But Ill tell you what else it doesnt have. No cheap interiors of the W-Body kind. Could be better, but really not that bad. No squeaky interior. No badge engineered siblings No torque steer No transmission failures due to the transmission not being able to sustain multiple jack rabbit starts. It does not have 240 horsepower. It does have 310 horsepower. It does have 2 ft/pounds of torque albeit higher on the RPMs... Ya 'll bitchin' about an old 3.6 liter V6 that GM uses it on everything yet the last real Regal GS had an even OLDER design (from the 1960s...)and GM put THAT one in everything too...actually, that ole 3.8 was used in MORE models than the 3.6 inluding on ugly dustbuster minivans. It was stated that the new Regal GS is a great touring car. It aint a sport sedan. Does it have to be a sport sedan? It aint the "GS" nomenclature that states it to be a sport sedan/coupe because the W-Body is anything BUT... I know...I had a 2005 Impala SS. 2005. Not a 1997. GM dragged THAT cat until 2006. And in 2006, that Impala SS was EXACTLY how that 1997-2004 Buick Regal GS was. The Impala SS just took over the Regal GS. This Regal GS is miles ahead of what old GM was pumping out. Yet, we GM lifers reminisce about the good ole days? The W-body Regal? Buick of the 1990s/2000s/2010s are NOT Audi competitors. GM/Buick NEVER intended Buick nor ever marketed Buick as such. Pontiac tried to be a BMW competitor towards the end. Oldsmobile WAS a foreign car fighter towards the end. Buick remained Buick in North America. And what is that? THE GREAT AMERICAN ROAD BELONGS TO BUICK Floaty ride on endless stretches of STRAIGHT HIGHWAYS!!! The new Regal GS is a fantastic touring car. THIS IS THE BUICK SEDAN FOR THE GREAT AMERICAN ROAD!!! What possesses you folk to think otherwise is beyond me!!!1 point

Jesus man, let it go “slim” (WTF does that even mean anyway). I made my point and stand by my point. What I buy or don’t buy is 100% irrelevant to what I was talking about so give it a rest. And I actially am looking at getting an 2013-14 AWD model (because I never buy new) before years end so how about you give the passive aggressive nonsense (and borderline condescension) a rest.1 point

All of my cars seem to leave on a trailer...collector cars to another collector, daily drivers to the scrap metal yard. MINI S left on a trailer immobile to a guy going to build it into a more serious autocross car. Big Chevy looks good in this music video You kind of have to scroll through to see it...1 point
