  1. After announcing that Genesis would be spun off into its own brand and teasing the first model, Hyundai has revealed today the G90 in South Korea. This is the replacement for the Equus flagship. As shown in teasers, the G90 gets a more upscale front end with LED headlights, larger grille, and a sculpted hood. The back is very reminiscent of the Mercedes S-Class with a similar design for the trunk and lights. Inside, the G90 promises to be one of the luxurious models with real wood trim and Italian leather. Tech features include a 12.3-inch touchscreen, 360-degree around-view monitor, Lexicon surround sound system, and wireless inductive phone charging. Three engines will be on offer for the G90. A 3.8L V6 with 310 horsepower will be the base, followed by a twin-turbo 3.3L V6 with 364 horsepower, and 5.0L V8 with 419 horsepower rounds out the lineup. All engines will be paired to a eight-speed automatic and either go through the rear or all four wheels. Now in certain markets, the G90 will come with a number of driver assist devices such as highway driving assistance, Advanced Smart Cruise Control, and a lane-keeping system. Other safety systems include adaptive headlights, blind-spot monitoring, and emergency braking with pedestrian detection. Now the G90 will launch in the U.S. as a 2017 model, but where it will make its debut is still up in the air. Source: Hyundai Press Release is on Page 2 Genesis Brand Launches its First Model, G90 Cutting-edge technologies, ultimate refinement and luxurious convenience features set the Genesis brand’s range-topper apart from competitors Luxury large sedan exudes confidence and originality through its ‘Athletic Elegance’ and refined yet dynamic performance Host of world-best safety and technological innovations realized in G90 December 9, 2015 – Hyundai Motor has unveiled the new Genesis G90 large luxury sedan, the model that will top the new Genesis brand’s luxury car line-up. The G90 (called EQ900 in Korea) will compete at the top of the luxury car market with world-best technological innovations and the highest levels of refinement, convenience and dynamic performance. Designed with profound elegance, natural dignity and grandeur by the Prestige Design Division that will craft the visual identity of each Genesis model, the G90 is the first realization of the brand’s ‘Athletic Elegance’ design style. Outside, the G90’s silhouette is powerful and refined, from its long hood to its sophisticated rear. While inside, the finest artisan materials meet human-centered ergonomics to provide occupants with absolute convenience and luxurious comfort. Human-centered Technological Innovation With technological innovation at its core and in anticipation of fully-autonomous cars, G90 features Genesis Smart Sense, which brings together advanced systems including Genesis’ advanced ‘Highway Driving Assistance’ (Korean market only), Advanced Smart Cruise Control and Lane Keeping Assistance System. Accentuating the customer-oriented approach of Genesis, the system substantially reduces driver fatigue by combining a series of innovative technologies. This combination of newly-developed technologies create a first-class, all-but autonomous driving experience, elevating the G90 to the top of its class.   First-class Comfort The first-class theme extends to occupant comfort, with the G90 offering the world’s first clinically-validated Smart Posture Caring (SPC) System, which automatically adjusts the seat, steering-wheel, outside mirror and head-up display to the optimal position for the driver’s body (Korean market only). G90’s VIP ergo passenger seats feature multiple ranges of electronically-controlled adjustment and are approved by German campaign for healthier backs, Aktion Gesunder Rücken. Best-in-class Luxury Refinement Benefitting from an intensive four-year development program by an 800-strong team, the G90 has best-in-class refinement thanks to extensive work on the car’s NVH characteristics. Every detail of the interior has been crafted to continue the car’s human focus. Advanced ergonomics analysis dictates the positioning of driver controls and the passenger comfort and entertainment features, while materials are sourced from the finest artisans around the world. Ride comfort and road holding is optimized by combining an advanced H-TRAC all-wheel-drive system with the first application of Genesis Adaptive Control Suspension. Sporty Agility with Refined Performance Driving the car, owners will notice standards of refined performance. This is central to the Genesis brand’s character, with development teams carrying out rigorous performance testing of the G90 at the Nürburgring circuit in Germany and the Mojave test center in the U.S. Despite the car’s sporty and responsive characteristics, the interior environment remains refined with all of the three available gasoline powertrains: V6 3.3-liter T-GDI, V6 3.8-liter GDI or V8 5.0-liter GDI. The newly introduced G90 in Korea will be rolling out to other markets, including United States, China, Russia and countries in the Middle East. A further five Genesis models will be launched over the next five years.
  2. Infiniti is taking on a flagship as its next big project. Automotive News has learned from a source that the luxury automaker has begun work on flagship model featuring a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The source says work has begun at Nissan's r&d center in England and is currently benchmarking the Mercedes-Benz S-Class plug-in hybrid and Porsche Panamera E-Hybrid. The flagship could be a production version of the Q80 Inspiration concept shown at the Paris Motor Show last year. The vehicle boasted a hybrid system with a new twin-turbo 3.0L V6 engine. At the show, Infiniti announced that a model like this would be launched in three to five years. Source: Automotive News (Subscription Required)
  3. Lexus is readying another flagship vehicle to sit along the LS sedan. Speaking with Reuters, Lexus General Manager Jeff Bracken said the Japanese automaker is considering a new flagship. "We need a flagship. It doesn't have to be a sedan," said Bracken. "In addition to the LS (a large sedan), there could be another flagship in our lineup. We'll define what it is in January." There are two vehicles that are possibly in contention. The first is the long-rumored LF-LC coupe concept, wearing the SC nameplate. The other is another SUV. Source: Reuters
  4. BMW is losing a lot of ground in the flagship arena to Mercedes-Benz. To combat this, the Munich-based automaker is considering an ultra-luxury sedan that will sit between the 7-Series and the Rolls-Royce Ghost. "Just like certain competitors, we will see that we occupy with credible offers the price bracket of 150,000 euros ($170,000) and beyond," BMW development chief Klaus Froehlich to Automotive News. Froehlich also took a jab at Mercedes-Benz by saying BMW wouldn't offer several wheelbases or "varyingly thick chrome packages." Why is BMW wanting to take on Mercedes-Benz in terms of flagships? In a word, China. Automotive news says about one of every two S-Class sedans built goes to China. The sedans are mostly bought wealthy people who have a chauffeur. Mercedes also took a big gamble. Back in 2012, the brand shuttered Maybach and left Bentley and Rolls-Royce to fight over buyers who want ultra-luxury models. During this time, a massive crackdown on corruption took place and many wealthy people decided it wasn't a good idea to show off their wealth in ostentatious fashion. This caused sales of Bentley and Rolls-Royce vehicles to drop. When Mercedes brought back the Maybach in the form of a high-lux S-Class in 2015, buyers flocked to it as it was seen as an understated way to show off their wealth. Since then, Mercedes has introduced a Pullman version. What does BMW have planned? There have been rumors of a 9-Series though details are thin. Source: Automotive News (Subscription Required)
  5. We've been hearing for awhile rumors of a Infiniti flagship. Most recently, reports have pointed towards a model that would compete with the likes of the Porsche Panamera. Now a new report from Motor Trend is spilling a lot information out on this possible flagship. The report says the new flagship will likely be a four-door version of Infiniti's Essence concept wearing either the Q80 or Q90 nameplate. Engines will include a new 3.0L turbo V6 hybrid with 550 horsepower and a 3.7L twin-turbo V6 hybrid with 700 horsepower. Both engines will feed power to a standard all-wheel drive system. “We are not planning to create a Mercedes S-Class competitor. Our goal is to launch a revised four-door version of the Essence,” a source said. The new flagship is expected to arrive in 2017 or 2018 with a pricetag of $100,000. 6. The rumors of the flagship emanating from Cadillac have been written and talked about for the past few years. But as of this week, the flagship appears to be given the green light as evidenced by spy shots. While General Motors has made sure to layer on the cladding to disguise many details of the new flagship, there are a few items we can pick out. For one, the design ideals from the new CTS are very apparent in the flagship's design with sharp-edges and a blocky design. We can also make out the large grille up front. The new flagship is rumored to be riding on GM's new Omega rear-drive platform. Powertrains are up in the air, but we wouldn't be surprised if the twin-turbo 3.6L V6 is one of the engines available. Transmissions could range from an eight-speed all the way to a ten-speed. As for the name, many reports say it could be LTS. 7. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 21, 2013 Infiniti is trying to differentiate itself from the other players in the luxury car market by possibly developing a four-door coupe as a flagship. This is coming from Nissan's executive vice president Andy Palmer to Automotive News. "We won't do a Merc S class or that type of car. We have had that before. We want a flagship car that's appealing and different," said Palmer. The four-door coupe is reportedly taking nspiration from the Infiniti Essence concept shown at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show. Sources say Nissan design chief Shiro Nakamura's team is looking at how to stretch the dimensions of the Essence concept to add two extra doors and seats. This new model could also use Mercedes-Benz's new rear-drive modular platform and be introduced in 2017 at the earliest. But Palmer says the plan for flagship haven't been the greenlight. For that to happen, Infiniti needs to move a fair number of vehicles such as the Q50 sedan and QX60 crossover. 8. By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com May 8, 2013 Infiniti’s president, Johan de Nysschen tells Car and Driver the brand is considering doing a model above the Q70 (M37 and M56). This new model would likely become the brand's flagship vehicle and it will not be like your conventional luxury sedan. "Above Q70 you need a car that competes with 7-series, S-class, and Audi A8. That’s conventional thinking. There’s enough action going on in that segment. I don’t think the world needs another car like that. But I do think the world needs an upscale, very emotional, high-performance luxury sedan from Infiniti that might be a different concept," said de Nysschen. Whatever that mean is anyone's guess. de Nysschen went onto say that if the flagship is given the go ahead, its platform will be used for a GT coupe. “I think we need some kind of sexy sports car that might share powertrains and platforms with [the range-topping sedan], but an even more emotional iteration.” Sadly this new GT will not be the Emerg-E concept which was shown the door due to the high pricetag. 9. By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com April 24, 2013 Since Volvo was bought by Chinese automaker Geely back in 2010, talk emerged that Volvo was considering a flagship. This would be further fueled by comments from Geely Chairman Li Shufu who said Volvo should compete directly with BMW, Mercedes and Audi; and the introduction of two concept vehicles, the Concept Universe and Concept You. Volvo's CEO at the time, Stefan Jacoby said a luxury sedan doesn't fit the image of the brand. Jacoby's sucessor agrees. "We don't have any ambitions to go into a segment where we would compete with vehicles that have V-8 or V-12 engines. We don't believe it would fit our brand image," said Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson. Samuelsson's current focus is to get the replacements for the XC90 and S80, both to be underpinned by Volvo’s new scalable platform architecture (SPA) out on the market. 10. If you were hoping that Cadillac would sprinkle some of the design from the Elmiraj concept for the upcoming CT6 flagship, prepare to be disappointed. GM's vice-president of global design, Ed Welburn, tells Automotive News that the CT6 will not be influenced by the Elmiraj. Instead the CT6 will stick with the art and science design theme found on current Cadillacs. “I think Elmiraj was more of an influence on some other things we’re working on for Cadillac,” said Welburn. “It’ll be different and it will certainly stand out in the portfolio. But you won’t see a real shift in direction.” We'll see if there is a real shift when the CT6 debuts next year at the New York Auto Show. Source: Automotive News (Subscription Required)
  11. Since Cadillac has brought in Johan de Nysschen as its new president, the decisions made by him - such as the CT/XT nomenclature and moving some of their staff to New York - have caused many to experience a range of emotions from happiness to outrage. So we don't know how many people are going to feel about de Nysschen's thoughts about Cadillac in the future that he talked with a couple of outlets at the LA Auto Show. First up is Reuters who reports that that de Nysschen sees Cadillac selling a $250,000 luxury sedan, but not anytime soon. "It is too early today for a $250,000 Cadillac. Fifteen years from now, it won't be," said de Nysschen. Next up is Car and Driver who got a flurry of thoughts from de Nysschen. Here's what they got. Cadillac is working on an all-new diesel engine that will launch in 2019. The U.S. will be getting this new engine. A 911 fighter from Cadillac? de Nysschen says there is a possibility of this, but not till after 2020. (Also, Corvette may have something to say about this as well. -WM) The V lineup will be growing to possibly five or six models in the future. One of those models could be an SUV - not the Escalade though. Sales target for the ATS-V? Modest Volume. Source: Reuters, Car and Driver
  12. Cadillac has some big things coming in 2015. Dave Leone, Cadillac’s chief engineer told reporters last week in California that 2015 will see the introduction of the long-rumored and speculated flagship. Possibly wearing the name of the LTS, this news seems to confirm a report from earlier this month which said the model would debut at next year's New York Auto Show. Along with the flagship, Leone also said that 2015 will also see a redesigned SRX and the ATS-V. “This is going to be a fantastic year for Cadillac,” Leone said. 13. A new report from Autoblog says Cadillac is planning on premiering their flagship sedan, possibly named LTS, at next year's New York Auto Show. A source at the company says the brand is preparing their competitor to the Audi A8, BMW 7-Series, and Mercedes-Benz S-Class to be shown at New York. The source dismisses the current XTS as a placeholder, and not a "real" Cadillac. The source admits that the new S-Class is a tough competitor to upcoming model. Sadly, no information on powertrains or other key details were revealed. Source: Autoblog William Maley is a staff writer for Cheers & Gears. 14. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com September 18, 2012 Volkswagen's first try with Phaeton was a colossal failure in the U.S. Despite being one the best luxury vehicles with a surprising price, no one could get over the high price-tag for a Volkswagen. Well, Volkswagen is going for another try with Phaeton in the U.S. Automotive News is reporting that the Phaeton will return sometime in 2015. The Phaeton will ride on the new longitudinal platform and be priced “well below” the $70,000 mark. Source: Automotive News (Subscription Required) William Maley is a staff writer for Cheers & Gears. 15. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 24, 2012 Cadillac has big ambitions for the European market, readying the ATS, CTS, and SRX to do battle. One car that was planning to stay was the XTS. Now, a new report from German auto news site, Auto-News.de, says the XTS could be the basis for a new Opel flagship. An odd pairing at first, bankruptcy documents from Saab reveal GM was hard at work on a new on a new flagship for Swedish brand named the 9-8, which was expected to use bits of the Cadillac XTS. However, when GM sold Saab and the events following thereafter left the 9-8's design hanging in the balance. Opel has apparently said that's ours with the 9-8 and is now reworking it into an Opel. The report says the vehicle will likely wear the Omega nameplate, a name that has adorned Opel's flagships from 1986-2003. Drivetrain will be FWD with the option of AWD. Power will either come from a 3.6L V6 or the 2.8L turbocharged V6 used in the Opel Insignia. A range of diesels are also expected. 16. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 24, 2012 Automotive News reports that General Motors has given the green light to the Cadillac Flagship. The new flagship is expected to begin production sometime in 2015. Design of the new Cadillac flagship will be influenced by the Ciel concept shown at last year's Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The flagship will be based on the long-rumored Omega RWD platform. There will be the option of AWD as well. Power for the new flagship will include the 3.6L V6 and a range of V8 engines. 17. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 18, 2012 Kia's flagship sedan, the K9 will have a change of name when it goes on sale in select countries in the fourth quarter of 2012. The name; Quoris. "Derived from the English words 'core' and 'quality', the name of our new flagship sedan hints at the attributes at the very heart of the vehicle. The word 'Quoris' conveys solidity, luxury and high-technology, all resonating together as a chorus," said Thomas Oh, Kia's Executive Vice President & COO of the International Business Division. "Our decision to give this striking new sedan an unconventional name means it will stand out even further from the established crowd, driving Kia sales in what is a new segment of the global automotive market for Kia." Now, I might be the only person who liked the name K9. But the name Quoris is just terrible. Its about the same level of terribleness as Amati. Okay, lets get off the name for the time being. The Quoris will be available with full adaptive cruise control, a collision warning and mitigation system, blind spot detection and lane departure warning, and a multi-camera system. Press Release is on Page 2 Kia 'Quoris' flagship sedan promises premium driving convenience and innovative safety technologies - New rear-wheel drive flagship to be named 'Quoris' for export markets - Innovative driving assistance and active safety technologies - Safety systems utilize radar, cameras and haptic technology (SEOUL) July 18, 2012 – Kia's striking, rear-wheel drive, all-new flagship sedan will be called 'Quoris' when it goes on sale in overseas markets from the fourth quarter of 2012. The new luxury model (known as 'K9' in the domestic market) went on sale in Korea in early May, and features a host of high-tech comfort and safety features, many of them never seen before on a Kia. "Derived from the English words 'core' and 'quality', the name of our new flagship sedan hints at the attributes at the very heart of the vehicle," commented Thomas Oh, Kia's Executive Vice President & COO of the International Business Division. "The word 'Quoris' conveys solidity, luxury and high-technology, all resonating together as a chorus. "Our decision to give this striking new sedan an unconventional name means it will stand out even further from the established crowd, driving Kia sales in what is a new segment of the global automotive market for Kia," adds Mr. Oh. Innovative 'active' safety technologies The Kia Quoris will feature an array of high-tech driving assistance and active safety features. "Quoris adopts a number of intelligent safety technologies never before seen on a Kia, in order to deliver maximum driver comfort and safety," comments Chang-Ki Kang, Senior Vice President of Kia's Namyang R&D Center. "The Quoris can cruise at a desired speed, maintain a pre-determined 'safe' distance from the vehicle in front, and even come to a complete stop if necessary. Quoris can also detect and warn the driver of approaching potential hazards using innovative audio, visual and haptic alerts. "Our new flagship sedan possesses remarkable abilities to monitor and detect changing traffic conditions, and is constantly processing information, immediately deciding the right course of action and precisely executing vehicle movement controls as necessary," concludes Kang. Advanced Smart Cruise Control (ASCC) The Quoris employs Kia's first radar-based Advanced Smart Cruise Control (ASCC). Located in the right side of the front bumper, the radar system constantly monitors the road ahead, up to a range of 174 meters. With ASCC activated, the Quoris monitors traffic conditions and speed in order to maintain a pre-determined safe distance from the vehicle ahead. The driver can easily adjust this distance by choosing from four options (52, 40, 32 or 25 meters at a speed of 90 km/h) using a button on the steering wheel. The Quoris will also automatically come to a complete stop, if necessary. When the stop is less than three seconds and traffic ahead moves off, the Quoris automatically moves forward, resuming the journey. For a stop longer than three seconds, the driver has to manually restart the vehicle by pressing the accelerator or pushing the resume button. Advanced Vehicle Safety Management (AVSM) The ASCC is linked to the rest of the vehicle controls by the Quoris' Advanced Vehicle Safety Management (AVSM). Integrating the control of various vehicle monitoring systems, including the Electronic Stability Control (ESC), seatbelt mechanisms and multiple warning systems, the AVSM can alert the driver, pre-pressurize the braking system and activate the Pre-Safe Belt (PSB) system, depending on the anticipated level of a collision risk. Detecting a risk of a collision, AVSM warns the driver in three stages via a loud audible alarm, a visual warning on both the Head Up Display (HUD) and TFT LCD cluster and a haptic signal on the seatbelt. Stage 1 At a low level of collision risk, a visual warning appears on the LCD cluster and HUD. Stage 2 At a higher level of collision risk, in addition to the visual warning, an audio warning signal is sent out and the haptic seatbelt is activated via an electric motor, sending strong vibrations through the driver's seatbelt. Stage 3 When a collision is imminent, the AVSM automatically applies the brakes to reduce the impact speed. The electric motor and pre-tensioners of the PSB system are also activated to retract the seatbelt and hold occupants closer to their seats, ensuring maximum occupant protection and minimizing abrasions caused by contact with the airbags. Class-leading Blind Spot Detection with Lane Change Assistance The Blind Spot Detection (BSD) system for Quoris features two radar scanners located in each of the outer corners of the rear bumper. Each is capable of detecting objects up to 70 meters away from the rear, and four meters from each side. Activated at vehicle speeds above 30 kph, BSD gives the driver a warning when a vehicle comes into the blind spot zone – an area approximately four meters wide along each side of the Quoris and extending more than six meters from the rear bumper. Compared with sonic-based BSD systems, Quoris' radar-based BSD gives a longer detection range, which is also exploited by the Lane Change Assistance (LCA) system. LCA alerts the driver to vehicles approaching from the rear at high speeds from up to 70 meters away. If the system also considers the speed of approach to be a potential hazard – specifically if it calculates that a collision would occur within 4.5 seconds if no avoiding action is taken – it will illuminate a warning triangle graphic in the left or right door mirror glass and activate a warning signal on the HUD. If the driver does not react to this visual 'alert', an audible warning is also sounded. Both the BSD and LCA systems can be deactivated by the driver, if required. Lane Departure Warning System While radars boast a superior ability to detect objects at long distances, cameras are used in Quoris to recognize the shape of closer objects such as lane markings. A forward-facing video camera is at the heart of the new sedan's Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS). It monitors the car's position in relation to lane markings and triggers a warning in case of unintended lane departures at speeds above 60 kph. Around View Monitor system Four cameras on each side of Quoris are used to create its class-leading Around View Monitor (AVM) system, which provides maximum convenience and safety during parking and low-speed maneuvering. Unlike the majority of competitors' AVM systems with a field-of-view of less than a 270-degrees, the Quoris' system offers a true 360-degree all-around view in eight different viewing modes, displayed on the Audio Video Navigation (AVN) monitor. Continuously synthesizing images from four cameras, the AVM provides a virtual 'top' view in motion, so the driver can easily have a full grasp of all his or her surroundings, maximizing safety for the car occupants as well as pedestrians. The AVM system automatically deactivates at speeds above 20 km/h.

22. 23. 24. Source: Reuters, Car and Driver View full article
