Hyundai is looking towards more turbocharging for their engines. Speaking at Hyundai’s product preview and engineering tech session, powertrain boss John Juriga said a turbocharged version of the company’s 3.8-liter V6 (offered in both the Genesis coupe and sedan) is a possibility for the future. “The 3.8 is a contender for turbocharging for some high-output applications.” Juriga went on to say that such an engine already exists and is undergoing testing. However, speaking with AutoGuide, Jurega said that the Hyundai engineering team is constantly exploring new engine options and that the existence of a prototype is no guarantee that such an engine will make it into pro…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 24, 2013 Kia made a big splash with the GT Concept at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. With its distinctive coupe styling and a turbocharged 3.3L V6, the GT Concept got a lot of love. Now a new report from Auto Express says that the GT may have been given the greenlight. “We have plans to build a GT – we spoke about it at our global marketing conference in Singapore. We’ll be mainly targeting the end of 2016 or early 2017,” said Soon-Nam Lee, Kia’s vice-president of overseas marketing. Now Auto Express reports that the GT will carry the four-door coupe shape as seen on the concept, but will likely use front-wheel …

G. Noble Editor/Reporter CheersandGears.com March 1, 2012 Adding to the long list of production and concept vehicles leaked by Uncle Internet before their official reveal this year is Hyundai's new i-oniq concept, slated to debut at the rapidly approaching Geneva Auto Show. The oddly named concept car is said to be a preview of the evolution of Hyundai's "fluidic sculpture" design language and is billed as coupe, although its shape suggests its something more akin to a three-door hatchback. The overall result is something that arguably seems a little more French than Korean. The i-oniq is 4,400 millimeters long — that's about 173 inches to you and I — and reportedly …

Automotive News is reporting that internal sources have indicated that Hyundai will not develop a new generation of the Sonata once the current model run has complete. Similar reports regarding the fate of the Kia K5, the replacement for the Kia Optima, seem to confirm this as both vehicle share a common platform. The current Sonata went on sale in 2019 as a 2020 model while the K5 started production in 2019 in overseas markets and went on sale in the U.S. as a 2021 model. Sales of both sedans has dropped dramatically with the Sonata reaching a peak of around 230,000 U.S, sales in 2012 and the K5/Optima reaching almost 160,000 U.S. sales in 2015. Sales were around 93,…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com January 14, 2013 Hyundai's showing for the 2013 Detroit Auto Show was a very unique concept named the HCD-14 Genesis. While the concept isn't quite the real deal, it gives us some clues of what to expect. The overall design is very much a classic concept car with a almost vertical front end, large grille, and rear-hinged doors. Aside from those dream features, the HCD-14 does feature some design cues that might end up on the next Genesis like hard-edged body creases running along the side of the car and the coupe-like roofline running all the way to the end of vehicle. Other features to take note are a heads-up displ…

Dave Zuchowski, the new CEO of Hyundai Motor America has some ideas for new products in segments where the company doesn't compete. The first is an addition of a third premium model to join alongside the Genesis and Equus. "That's one of the conversations. I think it's fair to say that within a couple of years there may be another premium" nameplate. "That's a space where we think there's some opportunity," said Zuchowski to Automotive News For the past couple of years, we've been hearing rumors of a compact luxury sedan to possibly compete with the likes of the BMW 3-Series. When asked about this, Zuchowski declined to comment. The other model in consideration is a su…

TCC Test: 2007 Hyundai Accent We can recall the days when cheap cars felt all of their description. This opinion is now obsolete thanks to the thoroughly modern and competitive offerings like the Accent SE, Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit, and others. Hyundai takes it a step further: to quell concerns about quality and reliability, it backs the Accent with a five-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty plus a ten-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. Hyundai wants you to compare their Accent to the Yaris, Scion xA, Fit, and Chevrolet Aveo. After researching competitors, add the Chevrolet Cobalt and Ford Focus to that list. All of these cars offer solid transportation valu…

During the 2021 Los Angeles Auto Show, Hyundai displayed their SEVEN concept, a highly futuristic three-row EV roughly the size of the company's Palisade. It was assumed at the time that when this vehicle came to market in production form, it would wear the Ioniq 7 nameplate. A recent report to Automotive News (subscription required) has said that the name will now change to Ioniq 9 to better align with Kia's EV9 SUV and also give space below for additional Ioniq models to come. Hyundai is busy making Ioniq into its own brand, with several vehicles planned in the coming years, including some Hyundai Ioniq trucks. The Ioniq 9 is expected to break cover in June this …

The Hyundai HCD-15 Santa Cruz concept shown at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show is the automaker's idea of a compact truck with such features as seating for five and a unique bed that can extend to provide more space. With the concept getting raves from the press and auto show visitors, Hyundai has decided to investigate the truck idea further. Reuters reports that a unnamed Hyundai executive told reporters a pickup truck is under consideration. But Park Byung-cheol, a director at Hyundai's R&D division said there were "hurdles" to the production of a truck. Byung-cheol didn't go into detail about what 'hurdles' are. Back in June, we reported Hyundai was planning a coupe version of the Elantra to be shown at this month’s LA Auto Show. Well, someone at Automotive.com caught some pictures of what is presumed to be the Elantra coupe. At first, it looks like a Honda Civic coupe wearing some covers. But look a little closer and you’ll begin to notice swoopy roofline and the wheels borrowed from the Veloster, telling you this is a Hyundai. The doors on this mule have been extended and roofline goes further down then the sedan. No details have been released regarding the coupe’s engine, transmission or price tag. It’s assumed the sedan’s 1.8L 148 HP four-cylinder lives under the hood and w…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 17, 2012 Hyundai has a bit of a problem. Currently, the Korean automaker has 5% market share in the U.S., but their supply of vehicles is very constrained. How constrained? Using the traditional measure of dealer inventory in "days supply," Hyundai's supply is very very low. At the moment, Hyundai's average at 25-27 days, or less than one month's supply. The Azera stands at 12 days supply. To put this into perspective, out of a 1,000 vehicles sitting on U.S. dealer lots, 25 of those are Hyundais. “We know we will be short from a production point of view. We're definitely passing up sales," said John Krafcik, Hyund…

The Korean language Genesis web-site: http://www.the-genesis.co.kr Everything is in Korean but enjoy. They say they made the car to surpass the German best. I laughed my brains out. I don't think it will sell in N.A since it is nothing more than a rip-off. Maybe a few Korean people who just want to upgrade a little from their current Azeras or any Korean Americans who feesl it's helping the Korean economy by buying Korean, but other than that, I can't picture any Americans will go buy this knockoff and pay that hefty amount of money for an un-proven so called LUXURY car from cheap car maker.

Called the HND-9, this concept could give us a preview of what the next Genesis coupe looks like. The sketches show the HND-9 pulling the dramatic card out with an Aston Martin-esq front end and large rear haunches. There is also a set of gullwing doors. Power comes from a direct-injection, turbocharged 3.3L V6 engine making 365 horsepower. That's mated to a eight-speed automatic and puts the power to the rear-wheels. We'll have more details when the HND-9 comes out next week. Source: Hyundai William …

Collaborations between automakers and tech companies are becoming commonplace as self-driving vehicles and a sharing economy are starting to enter the limelight. Doing either one of these alone is difficult and it appears one automaker is realizing this. Bloomberg reports that Hyundai is in talks with Google about a possible partnership. Hyundai Motor President Jeong Jin Haeng said in an interview the two companies share some "common areas that may require cooperation". One of those common areas is autonomous technologies. Both Hyundai and Kia are lagging far behind when it comes to this. It doesn't hurt that former Hyundai USA CEO, John Krafcik heads up Google's auto…
