Chevrolet Cruze Gets A Diesel For 2013

Recommended Posts

EconoMax?

As for the commercial - you could compare the diesel Cruze with an 80's diesel escort or 70's Rabbit.

Or get crazy and have him in an mpg contest vs. a current Jetta. But I guess you'd better make sure you know who wins.

Funny thing is, a diesel Cruze without a doubt is definitely more refined, well optioned, quicker, safer etc than the older cars, but I bet it wouldn't come close the mileage of an '84 Escort diesel (which routinely got 55mpg highway).

EVERYBODY gets treated better than Americans when it comes to the Chevrolet Cruze. Hatchback. Diesel. Manual transmissions. And now the Cruze v. 2.0 in Australia has been shown in a variety of vibrant colours, including that really cool green that's on the Commodore... plus a nice aggressive front lower fascia and a more detailed grille than our Chevrolet.

It is not that everyone get treated better than the Americans it is the fact that not enough Americans want what many get overseas. If GM really thought they could sell them they would be here.

The hatchback I think you get away with but imagine the resale on a 4 cylinder Diesel 6 speed Manual? If GM imported 10,000 here they would be sitting on most of them.

I would have no issue with them being here as I like the combo. I just fear there just will be too little interest witht he general public. People pining for them on web sites just can't buy enough of them to justify bring them here. There just needs to be a good marketing program now with the Cruze Sedan Diesel and get people to see what they really are like and then expand it from there.

For what is worth I like EcoMax.

A hatchback 4cyl diesel w/ a manual is the only way I'd consider buying a compact or subcompact FWD car..but I know the mainstream would overwhelmingly want a silver sedan w/ an automatic.

Something like a Golf GDI would rock, or a Focus STDi..get the sportiest suspension, most loaded interior w/ a diesel and a manual..that would be a fun little car, I think...

Holden's 2 liter diesel is 160 hp and 265 lb-ft, that is the engine. Put that in the Cruze, Malibu, Equinox, Terrain and GMC Granite or whatever the HHR replacement is. That's more torque than a V6 Malibu and likely pushing 40 mpg.

The 2.2L used in the Captiva has two variants, rated at 163hp/350Nm and at 184hp/400Nm. The 184hp/400Nm version, even though it has less torque than what I expected, would be the perfect fit for the vehicles you listed :AH-HA:

diesel fuel price volatility is an issue. no one cares if the diesel gets 10% better mpg if it costs 40 cents a gallon more.

most Americans don't want to touch diesel, the only excepting reason is mpg / fuel cost. diesel fans who actually prefer diesel power delivery and character to gas based on merit alone are extremely few.

It will take a clear advantage to make a lot of people to change their minds. The MFG need to come up ways to create demand for these cars as few people will be willing to change to them unless there is a great advantage in their eyes. I think that is the challange they find and don't know how to attack it.

While we may try to sell a car that is global we are still not a one world market in all respects.

Building the efficent diesel car is the easy part convicing people to buy it in great numbers in NA is are great challange.
