The Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) has been giving automakers in Europe various headaches. As we reported last week, Volkswagen has pushed back the U.S. launch of the Arteon to help boost inventory in Europe due to a delay in WLTP testing. Other automakers aren't so lucky. According to Automotive News Europe, a number German automakers including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche have halted sales of some plug-in hybrids due to WLTP. In the new procedure, the way that PHEVs are tested reduces the effect of the fully-charged battery. "The vehicles are tested with a full battery, then the test is repeated until the battery is empty, when they are tested again," according to ANE. Germany's VDA on their website goes on to say that "the CO2 value is then calculated as the ratio of the electrical range to the total range." This in turn has pushed the "crucial CO2 emissions figure above 50 grams per kilometer". Why is it so crucial? Many European countries off tax benefits on vehicles that produce less than 50g/km of CO2. Matthias Schmidt, an analyst for Sweden's AID automotive research company tells ANE that in Germany, many PHEVs have lost their 3,000-euro (about $3,500) incentive. To qualify again, automakers will need to fit larger batteries to their vehicles to qualify for the incentives. Automakers now find themselves in a tough place deciding whether to bite the bullet and add the larger battery or pull PHEVs off the market for the time being. Here is the status of the various German automakers: BMW: Says its current lineup will meet WLTP, but ANE notes that certain models exceed the 50g/km of CO2 - example is the 225xe Active Tourer that produces 57 g/km. The 330e, the brand's second best-selling PHEV will not go back on sale until the next-generation model arrives next summer. Mercedes-Benz: Has no PHEVs on sale at the moment, but a spokesman said that the E-Class and S-Class PHEVs will go on sale within the next two months. Porsche: Has pulled sales of the Cayenne and Panamera PHEVs. "We will not start taking orders again until the cars are being built, the timing of which has not yet been confirmed," said a spokesman. Volkswagen: Stopped sales of the Golf and Passat GTE, both models appear in the top ten best selling PHEVs in Europe. Edsel sold 44,891 units in model year '59. For MY 60, given pre-introduction production, let's give Edsel 2 months of production (the new models were intro'd 10/15, discontinuation was announced 11/19). They sold 2,486 cars, which would extrapolate out to about 14K for a full year. 44,891 to 14,xxx is a 70% decline. Historically & business case-wise, it's hard to imagine a 2020 Genesis dealership being open. I say that, under the glaring inconsistency that is 14-year old money-burning Tesla.1 point

AMG is ultimate hot hatch, the ultimate sedan, ultimate convertible, ultimate coupe,ultimate SUV, etc. Yes they make 50 models in every body style, but all have performance. I like that AMG makes every body style and has cars like the E43 soon to be E53, because some people want the performance handling and braking, but don't need 600 hp. This is also why there is a Corvette Gran Sport and Z51 to get the best handling, but maybe you don't need a 700 hp engine. As to the A35 I am indifferent, it could be an A300 with an AMG appearance package, much like you can get an E450 or S560 what is the upgraded engine over the base on those classes. They were going to make this car either way, and the GLA, CLA, GLB will get this same engine. I don't really care if they call them CLA 300 or 350 or AMG 35.1 point

They've abslutely diluted the brand the same way BMW has diluted the M brand with "M Sport" with how they've lowered the brand to C43, E43, etc. Oh and Audi with their "S-Sport" package. All fluff and little content outside of aesthetics.1 point

Even sarcasm fails me at this point...and that is saying something. Which makes me think it is the economy slowing down. GM does not lack for products. Ford is a long strange love hate relationship with me. I will be more rational and rant less. Good to know, they are quite the innovative car company. And we are surprised...why?1 point

perhaps, but they have a turbo cx-5 coming, and the skyactiv-x engine around the corner. rumor has it the 3 and the cx-3 will get the 2.0 x. it will be interesting what the market will do with these products...when they hit lots.1 point

Considering the amortized costs of the XT5 being a platform mate to the Acadia, the Enclave, and the Traverse (LWB) I would say that your cost for the XT5 might be actually be spot on or even slightly high.1 point

I truly think we have hit a peak and a cooling period is beginning for the North American Market. I also think many buyers are holding off till the OEMs have their EVs on the lots to kick the tires and consider if they want to go that way or not.1 point
