With the introduction of the Cullinan "high-sided vehicle", Rolls-Royce now has five models for sale - the rest are Ghost, Dawn, Wraith, and Phantom. But according to Rolls CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös, they aren't planning to expand the lineup with a smaller SUV. “No, definitely not. You need to go with the flow, so for that reason, I’d never say never, never, never – but we don’t currently have any plans to expand our model line-up any further," said Müller-Ötvös. “Our strategy is definitely to maintain our high-end price position and not move the brand just for volume sake into lower-price segments.” It seems to be working as early sales of the Cullinan have…

Rolls-Royce is talking up a big game with their new Cullinan SUV with their press release mentioning it is the "most anticipated car of 2018 and, quite possibly, the most anticipated Rolls-Royce of all time," and an "all-terrain high-bodied car that makes the idea of authentic, luxury off-road travel a reality for the first time." Okay... Our first thought seeing the Cullinan was, "wow, Rolls-Royce has built a tall Phantom wagon." The front and part of the side profile comes directly from the Phantom sedan. There is the large Rolls-Royce grille, square headlights, and the suicide rear-doors. For the back, the Cullinan is the first Rolls to use a tailgate. The company…

Rolls-Royce has made it clear that it plans on introducing electric powertrains to their vehicles in the future once the technology has fully developed and customers want one. But new regulations are forcing their hand. Rolls' CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös told Car and Driver that the Phantom will receive the option of an electric powertrain sometime during its lifecycle. The platform that underpins the Phantom and future models have been built with electrification in mind. “We are more regulator driven than consumer driven. We might well see, in the next decade, some Asian markets closing down city centers to combustion engines completely. And then, of course, [ele…

A new or redesigned Rolls-Royce is kind of a big deal as they don't come around very often. Take for example the Rolls-Royce Phantom. The current incarnation (seventh-generation as the British automaker would like us to know) came 14 years ago and set new benchmarks for luxury and refinement in the ultra luxury class. Last night in London, Rolls introduced the eighth-generation Phantom for which the British automaker hopes can set the standard once again. If you were expecting anything drastic in terms of the design, then you'll be disappointed. The new Phantom looks similar to the model it replaces. Rolls buyers aren't fans of surprises, so playing it safe is very im…

Rolls-Royce has released a teaser picture of the upcoming 2018 Phantom before its official debut on July 27. It seems evolution is the order of the day as there appear to be no major changes. The only changes we can pick out are headlights sporting full LEDs and a new grille shape. This picture comes a day after a trio of leaked Phantom images made their way on to a Chinese automotive site. The pictures reveal certain details such as a new grille, revised bumper, and a side profile similar to the smaller Ghost sedan. The interior looks to come with a digital instrument cluster, new vent locations, and possibly a larger infotainment system hidden by a panel. The ne…

Rolls-Royce isn't planning to do a hybrid powertrain for any of their models anytime soon. Speaking with Autocar, CEO Torsten Müller-Otvös said customers would not accept the “compromise” of hybrid technology. “The Rolls-Royce brand is not, in a way, a game-changer when it comes to revolutionary technology. Our customers are doing so for reasons of utmost luxury, so there can be no imperfections. Compromises when it comes to technology, or operating our products, are unacceptable. People are more interested in highly reliably substance than to be a test field for new technology.” Instead, Rolls will focus on electric powertrains. “Electrification is th…

Rolls-Royce is the latest automaker to announce they are working on an SUV known as Project Cullinan and today, the company has dropped a couple of pictures to give us a glimpse of what's in store. Rolls doesn't call Project Cullinan an SUV. Instead, they describe the vehicle as being as an “all-terrain, high-sided vehicle.” (Is there such a thing too much pomp and circumstance? -WM) From the two pictures Rolls-Royce has released, Cullinan looks like a raised Phantom wagon. “This is an incredibly exciting moment in the development of Project Cullinan both for Rolls-Royce and for the patrons of luxury that follow us around the world. Bringing together the new four…

Like every other luxury automaker, Rolls-Royce is working on an SUV. But they will not be calling it an SUV. “Project Cullinan? We call it a high-sided vehicle. SUV is not necessarily the right thing to call it because it’s not necessarily sports, it’s not necessarily utility,” said Andrew Boyle, Rolls-Royce's global product communications manager to Motoring. “A number of other brands are entering into this area as well, with their own interpretations of what a luxury SUV should be. You’ll have to wait to see what we decide it should be, but I think you’ll find that it’ll be a different interpretation to what’s available today.” Some believe the Cullinan w…

At first glance, you might be wondering why this Rolls-Royce Phantom is making news. It looks like any standard Phantom. But it's when you look a bit closer and notice the raised ride height, aggressive tires, and shorten rear doors that you realize this isn't your ordinary Phantom. It happens to be the mule for Rolls-Royce's first SUV. It is assumed that the mule is using a new aluminum spaceframe architecture that will underpin the entire Rolls-Royce lineup. Judging by the shortened rear doors, it would be safe to assume that SUV will be slightly shorter than the next Phantom. Power will likely come from a V12 of some sort going through a four-wheel drive system. …

Rolls-Royce has announced that 2016 will mark the end of the current Phantom lineup. The sedan will make a return in 2018, but the coupe and drophead coupe will not. To mark the end of the coupe and drophead, the British automaker has announced a new special edition. The Phantom Zenith coupe and drophead coupe will come equipped with a Tailgate Hosting Area; laser-etched armrests featuring the locations of where the 100EX and 101EX concepts were revealed, unique instrument dials, a Spirit of Ecstasy figurine, and more. “As the name promises, Zenith will be the pinnacle; the best of its kind; the highest standard achievable by which everything else is judged. Zenit…

A new report from Automobile says the next-generation Rolls-Royce Phantom will be debuting modular architecture made out of aluminum. This new platform will underpin the next-generation of Rolls-Royce vehicles such as the upcoming SUV and next-generation Ghost lineup. No information was provided as to how much weight the move to aluminum would cut. As for the next-generation Phantom, the report says we could be seeing it next year. The Phantom will be offered in a short and long-wheelbase sedan. The coupe and drophead - Rolls speak for roadster - will be dropped due to lack of demand. Looks are said to be more imposing. A V12 engine from BMW will be the sole engine. …

The day has come to Rolls-Royce. In a letter sent to the press, Rolls' chairman Peter Schwarzenbauer and CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös announced that the luxury automaker would be building an SUV. “I am proud to confirm that Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is developing an all-new, high-bodied Rolls-Royce designed to satisfy the contemporary, highly mobile lifestyles of our discerning clients around the world. I am confident that this new Rolls-Royce will fully deliver on our brand’s promise of supreme luxury while at the same time being Effortless ... Everywhere,” said Müller-Ötvös. The letter goes onto say that the new model will use an all-new aluminium architecture - most likel…

Rolls-Royce announced this week that they are busy at work on a new model that will debut by mid-2016. In the press release, the company is hinting that the new model will be a convertible, most likely being the Ghost/Wraith. "The car will build on the success of Phantom, Ghost and Wraith by continuing to boldly shape the future of the marque with contemporary, graceful and sensuous styling. It will deliver effortless, open-top touring through the perfect marriage of modern Rolls-Royce luxury, style and elegance with an engaging and exhilarating driving experience," the British Automaker wrote in a press release. Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös adds, "We are curren…

Rolls-Royce looks to be the next automaker to join in on the SUV craze that is currently engulfing everyone in the luxury car class. Autocar had the chance to speak with the company's design boss Giles Taylor who said the company is currently assessing the idea of an SUV. As he put it, Rolls-Royce is "sketching to assess the viability of the concept. We are not yet grappling with three dimensions and proportions.” One thing for certain is that Rolls-Royce will not be doing a 'crossover-coupe-thing'. “I’m interested in function and functionality. I’m looking to create a properly functional vehicle – a shooting brake, not a crossover with a sloping roof. A proper SUV,” sa…

A few years ago, Rolls-Royce introduced an all electric Phantom concept named the 102EX. The concept was shown to customers to gage reaction as to whether or not Rolls should not continue this project. Customers weren't interested and Rolls stopped work on the project. That doesn't mean Rolls isn't looking into other ways to be more environmentally-friendly. Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös tells Auto Express the company is considering a plug-in hybrid powertrain for its vehicles in the next few years. “It will be essential in two years, maybe not from customer demand but through legal regulation on emissions,” said Müller-Ötvös. Most likely Rolls-Royce will borrow…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com September 13, 2013 This was Rolls-Royce's CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös answer pertaining to the rumors of a SUV back in April, “We have no plans to produce an SUV, definitely not, the next thing is drophead Wraith but bespoke orders are the priority.” Here's Torsten Müller-Ötvös this week at the Frankfurt Motor Show when asked about an SUV, ”We are intensively thinking about entering the SUV segment. The SUV segment is very interesting. It has been incredibly stable during the crisis, and I think a luxury niche will develop." But why now? Likely, Rolls-Royce has seen luxury automakers raking in the sales (and money) with …

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com April 29, 2013 The Rolls-Royce Wraith was a show stopper when it was introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in March. But Rolls-Royce isn't done yet with the Wraith. CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös told Auto Express that a convertible version is coming. “The design certainly lends itself to a drophead coupe, and I think that will be the next variant.” Müller-Ötvös emphasized that a convertible Wraith could take “some time”, so don't expect it to arrive within the next year or two. Müller-Ötvös also addressed the rumor of a SUV from Rolls-Royce. “We have no plans to produce an SUV, definitely not, the next thing is drophead …

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com March 21, 2012 Car & Driver had the chance to sit down with Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös to talk about what the next few years hold for the luxury brand. First, Müller-Ötvös said the 102EX concept shown at last year’s Geneva Motor Show will not go into production. The 102EX concept was a Phantom with an electric powertain taking the place of the V12 engine. The 102EX was built to see if customers were interested in a electric Rolls. The results? “The results were ambivalent,” said Müller-Ötvös. In one respect, customers loved the acceleration and utter silence. But, “on the other hand, the charging times…

EPA Says: 5,771-Pound Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe Is A Compact Car By Nelson Ireson Editor December 8th, 2010 The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is on a roll of remarkably nonsensical declarations of late, not least of which are the "mpg" ratings for the 2011 Nissan LEAF and 2011 Chevrolet Volt. The latest, and possibly silliest, pronouncement: the 5,771-pound, 453-horsepower V-12 Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe is a compact car. How, in the name of all things measurable, did the EPA come to that conclusion? The EPA classes cars not on weight, length, or some other exterior factor, but on interior volume. Even more laughable? The Bentley Continental GTC, at 5,6…

Rolls-Royce reportedly planning to expand Ghost family with coupe, cabrio, LWB sedan by Noah Joseph (RSS feed) on Dec 8th 2010 at 7:01PM The new Ghost has been a runaway success for Rolls-Royce, the (relatively) more accessible saloon more than doubling its sales figures and outselling the larger Phantom by order of magnitude. And as might be expected, the BMW subsidiary has every intention of cashing in its success with a family of new models. Much as it has with the Phantom, Rolls-Royce is reportedly planning on spinning the Ghost sedan into a full range, including a long-wheelbase version, a coupe and convertible. The stretched limousine is expected to come first,…
