Hey everybody, Its getting to be time to start thinking about replacing my Grand Prix. I just got back from the Dodge dealership where I test drove a '12 Charger with the new 8 speed auto. I wish I could buy it, but by the time I add the options I want, I can no longer afford it. I guess this brings my search to the used car market. I really want a RWD vehicle, but other than the Charger, the only things I can think of are BMW's and Mercede's or other foreign vehicles. I am a little nervous about buying a BMW or Merc with 40-50k miles on it, because of repairs and general cost of keeping it running. I like the G8, on one hand, but on the other hand I just don't kn…

Oy, Xmas is almost here, and I'm not really into it this year. I have cards here to sign, address and send. I have no gifts bought. I've gotta get off my butt and get it done. I did get the house decorated though. Took all of three minutes. I need some sort of Christmas Mackerel to get me in the spirit of the holiday. Any suggestions?

It never fails; Some online publication will create a 'Worst Cars of all Time' list that, seemingly, is pulled right out of their ass. Edmunds Inside Line may have just topped them all with their recent list of "100 Worst Cars of all Time". It's almost as if the IL editor in chief asked one of their writers to come up with the most controversial list possible. It's even complete with captions that are trying too hard to top Jeremy Clarkson's writing 'snark'. The list is simply beyond bad, filled with anything that isn't some variation of vanilla. That's not to say there aren't vehicles on the list that deserved their designation; there are a great many, but some of the ch…

Chances are you don't keep tabs on the financial shape of the newspaper industry. Newspapers have literally been around for centuries so it's only sort of natural to assume that they'll never go away, that if you're somehow left as the lone survivor of a nuclear holocaust in the year 2061 you'll easily find a paper copy of the New York Times laying around amidst all of the cockroaches and Volkswagen Beetles. Since the newspaper is somehow the most resilient form of media, there's no need to really worry about it going anywhere and therefore no one should give a damn about what shape the newspaper industry is in financially. I personally have a reason to give a damn since…

Although they look like they might be some sort of "marital aid", these are actually sterling silver salt and pepper shakers that came down through my dad's side of the family. I did a little research and discovered that they were made between 1920 and 1930 in NYC by P.H. Locklin & Sons. The puzzling thing is the monogram - it appears to be a "G". I can't find anyone on that side of the family with a "G" name. The pics aren't so great, but does anyone see some other letter in the monogram?

WRX/STI seem to run forever... We have more old Cavaliers and Sunfires on the roads here in Ohio than the General originally built... What else runs forever...or seems to? The other day at lunch, went out, sitting by myself...next table, Toyota tech and a Honda tech were eating lunch, from nearby dealerships. both of them spent the whole time pretty much talking about how crappy American and European cars are, and how much better simply EVERYTHING from Asia is. I am to the point where I think just the reverse, that while Asia builds some fine cars...esp Mazda and Hyundai....I am really liking American cars again and really actually want to buy a European car., So could I just have any love that anyone will offer up for American or European iron...please...just a little...?

Following up on our recent thread regarding cars you've bought since you've been on Cheers & Gears lets look ahead to cars you'd like to (realistically buy) You can include you're family as well. I currenty don't have a car since I live in Queens but if I can justify it or if i move to an area where it makes more sense to have a car I desperatley want a 2013 Mustang GT. If I get a big promotion I'm hoping for in the next year I might just go ahead and do it regardless of the logic involved. I'd get a GT premium manual with the track and brembo pack, manual and navagation. My parents love their 2010 fusion but they might consider trading it in on an escape 2.0 T …

* WORD MATH: Not having enough energy + drugs = too much thinking time My energy level is starting to increase (as evidenced by a 3-day stretch where I had 2 days of "Nephew Time" and 1 day "out" at my Aunt/Uncle's house for the midday hours), so I can HOPEFULLY get a few things done soon, before I go to work in about a month. Which also means ... less "online" time. It's not good to wonder "what if" OR torture oneself with "if I only knew then what I know now" OR consider what you might do given a "do over" chance. Yet, sometimes the mind just wanders to those ... and it's hard to stop it, particularly when the drugs are doing most of the talking. I don't have any…

So I'm back after a few month sabatical and my life has changed considerably since I've last been at C&G. My relationship of three years ended rather suddenlty, though in reality it was heading downhill for a while. It was tough but ultimatley Kate and I ended it on good terms and after a few awkward months managed to succesfully transition ourselves to friend zone status. She is still one of my best friends and we still care deeply about eachother but our directions and goals in life were diverging. She moved out of our apartment July 4th weekend and I moved out at the end of the month since the lease was up. I moved from Westchester county into New York City, i…

Chitty fan Gordon first watched the musical aged two and became obsessed with having his own version of the iconic car. He began to plan the project when he was 16 and finally finished it three years ago aged 28 - and it is identical in every way to the original. Gordon managed to get help from many people who worked on the original car, including Peter Lamont who was assistant art director on the musical film. Lion…

We like to complain at length about the bad ideas incorporated into vehicles these days, but what are the bad ideas they haven't implemented yet? Here's what I'm thinking: - A front engined, front wheel drive motorcycle with the engine mounted in front of the front tire, on the front fork. The space where the engine normally goes is used for storage of something. - A convertible with a removable fabric floor instead of a removable fabric roof. - A rear engined, rear wheel steering, front wheel drive pickup with the bed over the front wheels instead of the rear. - A cabover economy car. - A set of in-dash smoke machines instead of Service Engine Soon lights that expe…

My 4th open heart surgery (11/11/2011) was successful (my "big heart" is no more)! However, I was taken in for another surgery (evening, 11/12/2011), after I became unresponsive for a time due to internal bleeding around the surgery site. I still hurt/ache and am cold at times, but I'm coping and TRYING to follow "doctors orders" as MUCH as possible. The pain is more "annoying" than anything. So has anyone ever heard of Brewster as a car brand/manufacturer? I was talking to my friend's uncle at Thanksgiving dinner and he was telling me about one of the cars he has, a 1934 Brewster Town Car. Seems to have only been built between '34-'35 and had Ford mechanicals beneath a custom coach built body...which was produced in Long Island City. It looks like this:

I don't know how to describe how angry I became when I had to watch this ad (the batteries in my remote had died and, by the time I had decided to change the channels myself, it was already too late). Personally, I didn't want to be reminded of Black Friday. I didn't want to be reminded that Thanksgiving has become nothing more than a national holiday where people don't so much as cherish the opportunity to spend the day with their family and loved ones and instead just eat massive quantities of food so that they can muster up the strength to wait in line in front of a department store where they'll ultimately be trampled to death to buy some piece of $h! low-quality good…

Want a Holden Ute? You're 20,000 Signatures Away by black-knight, C&G Editor/Reporter 15th November, 2011 Yes, you read the header right. The weeping and teeth-gnashing could very well come to an end if you've pined for the Australian counterpart for the much beloved and long departed ElCamino. The same goes for any other car that, due to some sort of general incompetence, wasn't offered here: Alfas, Fiats, Vauxhalls and Opels ... the list marches on. This possibility is made possible in part due to an online petition that is trying to change the grey-market import laws regarding cars and trucks, which currently state that no foreign automob…

Sparked by the (hideous) Chevy Spark, there was an interesting chat session yesterday where a bunch of pics of unusual, little cars were tossed up. These are NOT my preference in vehicles, so in a way, I'm looking at these in order to find something I like design-wise. Bill Mitchell once said (...something derogatory about small cars, can't find the quote). Anyway, the Gub'mnt seems determined to get each & every one of us into one of these at some point, so maybe I can adapt to the idea if the design works for me (then again, I'd rather drive a '60 Fury). Gonna start off with one of Swordfish's favored models, the very very first saab from 1946, 92001: From this …

Back when the tsunami engulfed a portion of Japan's industrial base, we heard that some paint pigments that are produced there would be in very short supply. The lasting effects of that disaster are evident on car lots across America, as metallic black is disappearing as a color choice, replaced by good old regular black. Ford's "Tuxedo Black" appears to have vanished, and GM's "Black Granite" seems nowhere to be found. Today I saw a line of "Black" 2012 Escapes, and James Bond's newly leased Regal will be "Onyx Black", which I believe is GM's version of the tried-and-true. I've seen some 2012 metallic black vehicles, but it is evident there are much fewer of them on …

So if you would please: List any and all new vehicles purchased while being a member of C&G. Certified Pre-Owned from the same manufacturer's dealer is cool too, just mark the car with (CPO). From posts I've read here in the past, I think I would be safe to assume that a lot of guys here like phantom builds, myself included. It's probably one of the better by-products the scales of automotive economy of the '70s and '80s gave us -- take one unassuming '80s ElCamino and throw some Pontiac Grand Am sheetmetal over it and -- presto! -- your GrandCamino ST awaits you. Well, I stumbled upon an ad on Craigslist today where a guy out in Lawrenceburg is selling an '83 Regal and an '83 Grand Prix for $900 each. He says they're easy resto projects. Despite how much I doubt this, I wouldn't mind having the Grand Prix as the basis for a phantom project of my own: build a…

Okay, so earlier this year my wife was testing her employer's online travel site and "accidentally" booked an AirTrans airlines ticket. Of course she had to pay for it and it hasn't been used to date (we should have figured out how to use it when we went to Walt Disney World in May, but she went through a travel agent). I was going to use it to fly to the NAIAS in Detroit in January, but recently learned that the ticket expires December 31. It's roughly a $120 ticket, so it's not like the family can take a trip anywhere, it's really a one-person trip. So I was thinking, a'la Yes Man with Jim Carey, where can I fly round trip to for a day, that would be worthwhile? I …

* Did your vehicle(s) see any milestones in 2011? Some of my cars reached "important milestones" this year: 1979 CC ... 150,000 miles 1976 MC ... 63,000 miles & over 20,000 miles since I bought it 1979 MC ... 146,000 miles & over 40,000 miles since I bought it 1981 MC ... 194,000 miles AND, FINALLY ... my "Car Time" & "Nephew Time" happened TOGETHER, the last day of my "car season", 11/05/2011, when my sister & brother-in-law brought my nephew to see my cars outside, Saturday morning! My "Car Time" was shorter this year, partly because of health issues & my ROAD TRIP in the middle of the summer...: https://picasaweb.google.com/knightfan26917/C…

Best modern design in cars: I like the new Audi TT, the C30 Volvo, the Cadillac CTS, and a few other really modern cars...which New cars do you think have the best "modern" car styling. As far as exotics, I really like the direction Ferrari is taking also... Your thoughts?

My worst two- Taking the Miata down my favorite exit ramp (marked 25 MPH) at 73 miles per hour after I pulled off the shaved autocross tires and put on all seasons...one VERY impressive four wheel drift at high speed about two weeks ago. Would have hated to call the insurance company back... Was driving to work about two years ago, took the Miata...which was a mistake, as it was a level two snow emergency. Good looking thirty something blonde in a Hyundai Tiberon wanted to race me, for some unknown reason i raced her...not thinking that this time I DID have the shaved autocross tires (read-slicks on all 4 corners during a blizzard)...had about three car lengths pulled…

The rules of this thread...we need to name as many cars that we personally are crazy about that no one else at C and G is wild about. people may like them okay or hate them... but we need to find as many cars, oddball or not, that we are the only people who are nuts about them. Here is my list- I love the 1953 Ford, last of the Flatheads, and even paced the Indy 500 that year. I've ALWAYS wanted one of these since I was a kid, but have never had the chance to own one... http://www.chicagoclassiccars.com/inventory_show.asp?stknum=3334 71-72 Ford LTD ragtop...I think Moltie likes these, but he and I are probably the only ones... http://www.chicagoclassiccars.com/inv…

Everyone here seems to be thinking about a change of fleet. Camino is looking slowly at getting a better work truck, Balthazar is wanting that nifty Lincoln Flower car, Olds is looking for a car for Albert and a truck for his rental business, Dave 87 RS is thinking about a Cruze, Satty's wife is thinking about a Volvo, Roger wants a Truck, Ocean would be wanting another car if he had Jay Leno's garage, and I'm missing half the Forum. This thread could be pinned for awhile if Olds wants...but I would like to see if we could get a good discussion going on what we are all actually doing with changes to the C and G fleet. As for me...I have checked out and or driven a bunc…

* I'll be "out" for my 4th Open Heart Surgery (OHS), Tuesday, 11/08/2011, at Chicago's Northwestern Memorial Hospital, performed by Dr. Russell. The catheterization is the day prior. Until I'm feeling up to being on the computer & online again, my sister will post UPDATES (which MAY be SHARED on the groups/boards) to my Facebook Wall: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1300282613 My previous 3 OHSs (at Chicago's Children's Memorial Hospital) replaced the pulmonary valve that I was born without. The 1st, November 1977, was when the original pig valve was installed. The 2nd & 3rd OHSs (March 1987 & January 6, 2003, respectively) replaced the pig valv…

* No, I still haven't written anything new for Motor Gnomes, but Don posted a Route 66-related entry the same day I added more to my ROUTE 66 STORY. This past Summer 2011, Don road tripped to St Louis MO & walked across the Mississippi River along the Old Chain Of Rocks Bridge. He blogged about it, including some great pictures: http://www.motorgnomes.com/2011/10/a-walk-across-the-mississippi-river/ I've added 1 more section to my ROUTE 66 STORY, prior to surgery. Chapter 21 (Shaping History), written 10/30/2011, is here: http://whenthegoingisgood.com/2011/10/31/_thats-the-highway_-13/ Previous chapters... ...1-4: http://whenthegoingisgood.com/2011/03/29/_th…

We should all have something to be thankful for this munt. Turkey and cranberry sauce are one thing (apologies to our Canadian friends), but spotting something unusual in the automotive landscape is truly something to be thankful for. Post away, and please pass the green bean casserole, will ya?

They are calling for 2-4 inches here. This comes way too early, and guarantees that I'll have to drive the wagon through the salt mess. I may even have to put the plow on the ROPOS, all of which delays getting the Tahoe done. GRRRRR!

This weekend, two vinyl-philes (my buddy and I) will pack themselves into a Nissan Juke and hit seven great record stores in three states in about 12 hours! Not only that, but they'll spend quality time in each store and, most likely, pick up a few records along the way! Check in with Automotive Traveler's Facebook page (www.facebook.com/AutomotiveTraveler) and follow me on Twitter (www.twitter.com/samfiorani) for constant updates! Perhaps we'll even see you along the road. The snow's on the way, but the Nissan Juke and its all-wheel drive are ready. We'll be hitting the Record Connection when they open their doors in the morning. After that, we'll be heading over to AKA…

Hey everybody, I'm taking a trip home to Ohio from New Jersey for the first weekend in December. I am really really interested in purchasing a Cruze Eco - probably an automatic, as my boyfriend doesn't know how to drive manual. I doubt I'd be able to find a Cruze Eco for rent, but I was looking to rent a Cruze, hopefully with the 1.4 turbo for my trip. Does anyone know which rental agency have Cruze's in their fleet? If I can't find a Cruze I'll just be taking the old Grand Prix for another trip! I am about 9-12 months away from looking for a new car, and I figured, a 550 mile stint behind the wheel would tell me how I like the Cruze, as far as comfort and travel…

Disclaimer: this is all personal rambling. If you want to get to the meat of the story, skip the prologue. Well, as I mentioned here before, I'm entering what has turned out to be a transitional period in my life. On October 18th, I quit my job after a two-weeks notice. I had been working for Guitar Center for almost a year (about three weeks shy of that mark) earning minimum wage plus commission where it was a sales-based job. While the job was not physically taxing, it was very mentally demanding and the constant long hours left me feeling trapped and continuously fatigued. It was a very financially unpredictable job as well because of the country's unbalanced economy…

I'm shopping for snow tires for the Camaro. I have a set of the 18" wheels (black heritage wheels on the LS) that I got for cheap to use for the winter. However, while searching for winter tires on ebay to see if there were any deals, I stumbled upon 19" tires that would fit the wheels I currently have on the car. If I can get them for cheap I may go this route instead. The ad says they were on the vehicle for 3-4 months and have "no tread wear." Well of course that's pretty impossible unless they were only driven on for a few hundred miles. The quarter makes it look like there's a good amount of tread left, but it's still hard to really tell for sure. Hard to measu…

What is your car music guilty pleasure? We all have our car music, the stuff that really gets us into the drive. But what is the car music that you love that you... really wouldn't admit to? The stuff that doesn't fit your personality or your car's personality..... This idea came to me as I was driving to work this morning in the 2012 Chevrolet Cruze Eco wearing french cuffs, cufflinks, and a pink "Cancer Sucks" bracelet in support of a family member while enjoying.... Marylin Manson - Lest We Forget. Great music for an urban morning commute and for those of you who know me well enough... completely outside of my personality. So what is your car music guilty pleasur…

* I haven't had time to write anything new for Motor Gnomes recently, but something that my friend, Don, wrote on his 10/10/2011 post, caught my attention...because I agree: His post here: http://www.motorgnomes.com/2011/10/miata-car-clubs/ I see so many clubs having well-attended events, including DRIVING events; yet, it seems so hard to simply get people together from various groups/boards in Chicagoland. Maybe someday that will change. For a year, I thought it had, with 65 people attending the 2008 MidSummer Chitown Gathering. But then, every year after that, interest waned, including very low attendance at 3 Meet'n'Greets, 04/16/2011, 05/21/2011 and 07/30/201…

With my never ending quest to improve my credit score as quickly as possible so that I can refinance the Camaro at a lower rate (have no credit rating right now). Anyways, with the holidays right around the corner, surely an increased number of stores will be offering interest free financing (if paid in 60 days, 6 months, 12 months, etc.). With that in mind, and with that being a third line of credit (auto loan, just got approved for a credit card), my credit score should go up quite quickly within the next 6-8 months. What would be really nice is if the financing would be available at low dollar amounts so that I could get the no interest financing at a couple of stor…

So went to the shop that does the work on my cars (the one with all of the cool car pics in the project car thread>) Miata broke a half shaft (see other thread) before Sunday's racing, so I was unable to race. Here is the story for Today: They are repairing another vintage Rolls Royce automobile. The power window motors are $1200. Each. Plus the other parts to repair the drivers and passenger side power window mech....about enough to buy a nice second gen Camaro...for EACH DOOR! So a machine shop in China has done this work before. owner of the car is flying to China FIRST CLASS and staying in motel while this machine shop rebuilds the window lift mechanisms an…

After about 8 years, I resigned my position with Brenda Priddy & Co. early last week to start my own business. About 2 months ago I thought staying on part-time at BP & Co, while doing flight school, would work. More recently, however, it became apparent that the best choice for me would be going on my own. Certainly not an easy choice to make, but with the big cost of flight school, I've got to look at everything from a business standpoint now. http://www.facebook.com/ChrisDoaneAuto

Looking at the fullsize pickups from the Big 3, I always thought the Ram was the biggest in all dimensions by a good measure, with the Ford looking the narrowest by a good shot. But, in reality, they're pretty close together in size: GM: 79.9 wide 73.6 high 205.6 long 4463 lbs Ford: 79.2 wide 74.8 high 213.2 long 4685 lbs Dodge: 79.4 wide 73.4 high 209 long 4519 lbs This is for shortbed regular cab 2WD versions.

I guess I'll wander down to this today - it's always a very good show. The old Dodge should have been there, but I'm waiting on parts - kind of a bummer. If anyone is in the area of the Delaware County Community College, I recommend stopping to see the show and flea market.
