Chevrolet News:Camaro to Die - Again

Rumors coming out of Detroit are saying that the 7th generation Camaro development has been shelved, citing multiple sources from within General Motors, MusclecarsandTrucks.com reports. The current model will likely run until 2023 and then the nameplate will go back into the dustbin for the second time. 

The current car is based on the Alpha platform, the bases for the now canceled Cadillac ATS and CTS.  Their replacements, the Cadillac CT4 and Cadillac CT5 use a second generation of that platform called Alpha 2. The sources say that the Camaro will not move to the new Alpha platform. 

If the rumor is true, this will be the second time the Camaro has been canceled.  The last of the 4th generation, then known as F-Bodies, finished their run in 2002. Chevrolet revived the Camaro for a 5th generation using a cut down version of the Australian Zeta sedan platform. The current 6th generation car came out as a 2016 model and was lighter and slimmer than the 5th generation car.  The Camaro only sold 50,963 copies for 2018, a substantial drop from the 84,391 sold in 2012.

Shame on GM for killing it and also bad for Mustang.  Ford needs competition to keep improving the Mustang.

IMHO, this should be reworded. ‘Rumor’ vs “has been”.

Things change in months-time, and this rumor mentions ‘3 years’.

This means that if the Challenger also gets canned when the LX cars go away, Mustang will be the only pony car to choose from.

Ford will bring back the 2005-2009 Mustang, exactly. They'll bring back the 3v 4.6 5spd and everything and laugh in people's faces.

Maybe the Camaro will be reborn as an EV coupe CUV with styling cues from the 4th gen.

I just threw up in my mouth a bit. 

 

Not or sure how reliable this information but it would not surprise given all the CUV news from GM it would not surprise me. Just a sad state of affairs.

I know the journalist who is originally reporting this... I only put it up because I felt it was reliable.

The story is all over the usual automotive press and blog pages on the FB now...maybe GM is intentionally leaking this 3 years early to try and spur lagging sales.

Oh I’m not trying to discredit it so sorry if I came off that way. It really is anyone’s guess. Hell, a few months ago we were led to believe that the CT6 was dead in the water and not it’s not. Guess we will see when the time comes.

The Camaro got too expensive, plus gen 6 doesn’t look as good as gen 5 and you can’t see out of them.  People also want crossovers not coupes, so they better get performance crossovers ready.

And yet Porsche, Lamborghini, Bentley and AMG have them, and Ferrari is coming.  No one buys the Alfa Romeo or Maserati crossovers, but no one buys from those brands anyway.  Ford wouldn't do Edge ST and Explorer ST if they didn't think they could sell them.

Well it makes more financial sense for Chevy to introduce a crossover in between the Equinox and Blazer than to do a new Camaro, because then they can do a GMC clone of it too.  Sadly the people just want more crossovers.  I think this crossover craze sucks, but the tribe has spoken.

Well when everything Barra builds will be autonomous/EV, and those two traits are the very antithesis of the Camaro spirit, I am not surprised in the least.  She is poison.  Absolutely.

Poison to enthusiasts maybe, but not to shareholders who only care about GM's bottom line and the dividend payout.

Sad but very true.

If the Camaro is going to be discontinued in three years, I am sorry for it to go.  Then again, the new Camaro (if there is one) needs a better stylist and some more glass since the current one looks like somebody could become claustrophobic once inside.

But the document also mentions some intriguing information on upcoming powertrains for the C8 Corvette. Here are the details,
      Corvette Z06: 5.5L DOHC V8 known as the LT6 that will produce 650 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque. No mention of any type of forced-induction.       According to MotorTrend, fords Mach e while pissing off the mustang faithful has already sold out all production for America and Europe for the first year. As such with GM having a flexible EV platform and considerable new EVs coming over the next 3 years, this begs the question of Could GM produce a Camaro EV CUV and call it the Z28? With the first nine auto's off the EV platform to be a Cadillac, one has to wonder how GM might fit the sporty performance into their product line and having a performance CUV Camaro could be the magic ticket.
      To quote the MotorTrend story: we'd expect a Chevy Camaro electric SUV to at least match the 255 horsepower Ford is targeting for the base Mustang Mach-E. For higher-trim variants, Chevy would likely have to adopt a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup to stay competitive with the 332-hp, 417-lb-ft Mach-E 4 and 459-hp, 612-lb-ft Mach-E GT.

      At an event in Detroit this evening, Chevrolet took the wraps off the Tahoe and Suburban SUVs. We don't have specs yet to publish, but wanted to get the pictures out for you to see.  I will be updating the article as more details come out. 
      Six different trims will be offered including the new High Country trim, an RST trim, and Z71 becomes its own trim line instead of being offered as a separate package. LS, LT, and Premier trims carry on. Engines are the 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V8s, but the 3.0L Duramax will also be joining the lineup. The 5.3 and 6.2 now sport dynamic fuel management. All engines send power to the wheels through a 10-speed automatic. The Duramax is available on every trim except Z71.
      The power ratings are:
      5.3-Liter - 355 Horsepower at 5600 RPM / 383 lb-Ft of torque at 4100 RPM 6.2-Liter - 420 Horsepower at 5600 RPM / 460 lb-ft of torque at 4100 RPM 3.0-Liter Duramax - 277 Horsepower at 3750 RPM / 460 lb-ft of torque at 1500 RPM The column shifter is gone, replaced with a new pushbutton design placed on the dash.  Thanks to a fully independent rear suspension, they both gain room inside. Magnetic Ride Control and an Air Ride Adaptive Suspension (available on Z71 and High Country) are available. The Air Ride suspension offers adjustable height of up to 4-inches at all four corners .
      The dash sports a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment center standard. Buyers can opt for a rear seat entertainment system with twin 12.6-inch displays. Interior room is up; Tahoe sports 40 percent more third-row leg room and 66 percent more cargo volume behind the third row. While maximum cargo room is up 30 percent, the overall length increased only 4 percent. This is done on a wheelbase that is 4.9 inches longer than the 2020 model.  Suburban gets a 4.1 inch increase in wheelbase so that interior cargo volume increases 19 percent while overall length increases 1.3 inches.
