One that says all RV interiors have to be really ugly? I just spent a few hours scanning ads for RVs and every last one of them had a hideous interior full of crazy floral patterns and some very funky colors. I don't get it.

As of today, we are now a GM-only household. Sold my 2004 Neon SXT this morning and we're down to one car, the Malibu Maxx. This is the first time I've been without a Mopar in the garage since Nixon was president. I'm serious! My wife got a new job where she is able to commute via bus and I've been commuting via bus for a long time. Our high-school daughter gets to/from school via the bus as well and she won't be able to drive, unless some advanced surgery comes along to fix her eyesight (she's legally blind). We decided we don't need two cars and my wife didn't like driving the Neon (she claims she sat too low in it). Wow...we only have one car--and it's a GM!

This weekend, my wife & I had planned a trip to Yellowstone, but the weather turned crappy. So last minute we picked out a destination to the south for better weather, and went to the Great Basin National Park. Beautiful hiking & caves, good times. Drove partway home yesterday & spent the night at Windover, and soon learned it's on the edge of the Utah Salt Flats. This morning we popped by the Bonneville Speedway, where all the racing happens on the salt flats. I didn't know what to expect, but I figured there would be at least some kind of dragstrip-esque buildings. Nope, nothing. No one was out racing either, unfortunately, but there were some folks a…

The shop I work at will close on May 30th permanently after many decades in business and an excellent reputation earned well before I was born, due to lack of business. I was just promoted to co-manager in February. We were all caught off-guard. Not sure what to do next, I've called several people I know in the business to put out feelers. Hopefully something will come my way soon. When I first started there in 2006, there were 14 bodyshop employees. We're ending up with 9.

Or try to run your lawn mower using seawater. It's the only explanation I can come up with for what you're about to see. For reference, this is what a Tecumseh what a typical carburetor looks like: This is a carburetor I worked on last week. The gas in it was sold old it had evaporated and left corrosive, nasty varnish. This was the worst carburetor I've worked on. And then this came along. All I could say was: The customer had bought it last year from me. At the time the carburetor was in the the condition of the firs image. Perfectly fine. He told me at some point last year he had to hold the governor to get it to start and then it eventually woul…

So my brother's moving, and I spent the day helping. Part of my duties was to drive his truck from the sold house to the storage facility. Bad move on my part. He's got an '04 Silverado 1500 extended cab Z71, 122k miles, with a 330-horse GM replacement engine and Flowmaster exhaust. It was like going home. I turn into a blithering idiot when I drive a pickup truck. Why can't I get it out of my system?

Chronicling the Death of a Car Have you ever stopped and thought about what a car goes through at the end of its life? It's a very sad and to be honest very brutal fate that awaits a vehicle that provided its owners years of service, usually asking little in return. To most people a car is nothing more than an appliance, something that is merely cast away like an cell phone. To car enthusiasts however, who think of a car as more than the sum of its parts, a machine which can have passion and soul, and something that is part of your family, the following may be difficult to read. Car and Driver recently sent a tired, old BMW 325i to meet it fate, likening the wrecker t…

The BBC's globally approved automotive entertainment program Top Gear will not be making a return in 2012. Word came from Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson himself, saying on a South African radio show last week that the Top Gear Festival 2012 would "be the only time" when he and other presenters Richard Hammond and James May would be working together this year. Clarkson would later confirm the news on his Twitter account, adding that Top Gear would return in January 2013 and a full Christmas special would debut before then. So, why has the BBC pushed on…

For some reason, I've been eying the old Opel GT lately. There's something about the thought of an uncommon vintage mini-Vette that just leaps out and grabs me. Of course, eyeballing gives way to Craigslisting the hell out of a 200 mile radius of your area and, as my luck would have it, I found a drivable example somewhere in Nashville. Did you click the link? Okay, okay. I already know what you're thinking. Yeah, the impromptu camo paintjob was more than likely done by someone at some point in the little Opel's lifetime with a few too many rattle cans of paint, a few too many cans of Coors, but far fewer bright ideas. Yes, it has its share of dents and dings and minor s…

For me at least, Cheers and Gears has always been a reader/user-oriented site, a place where everyone is involved in someway. So, since I know I'm taking my affinity for automotive journalism as something that could become a loving, paying career someday in the near future, I'd like to know how much automotive journalism matters to one person: you. What you would like to see different? What do you like about what automotive journalists are currently up to? Personally, I think automotive journalism has its place and I can think of ways it can evolve and progress, but this isn't about what I think. This is about what you think. As for why I decided to open this topic up f…

So I have been spending some time looking at CNG Fueling stations. I was going to bring this up on the thread I remeber on this site about anouncing that GM was starting to sell CNG trucks/suv's or something to that line. So currently here in Washington, NG is at $2 per Thousand Cubic feet. So what would the ROI be on changing over? Your looking at about 500-1000 for a cng conversion kit for your auto and about $5000 for a home fueling kit. The current thought is this make the best sense for America to kick the Oil Habit, we need a stepping stone to the eventual holy grail of Pure Electric. I'm a member of an Australian automotive forum. It's nothing like Cheers&Gears ... more like a cross between Cheers&Gears and the /b/ area of 4chan. Anyhow, a while back one of the members spotted a really ugly Ford Taurus with a home-made wide body kit on eBay, and we knew that for the sake of society, this vehicle had to be obliterated. We took donations from the forum members, and bought the car with the specific intent of destroying it. There were many plans for a spectacular destruction, including one that involved a serious amount of explosives, but one by one these plans became non-events when all the "nanny state" regulations, paperwork, insurance, and o…

I would like to introduce to you all the newest member of my family, Buddy: He is a Shih Tzu and was born on January 27. We found him Saturday night at a puppy store that is owned by the same guy that we bought our other dog, Benji (Lhasa Apso) from 12 years ago. Buddy was picked up yesterday afternoon and has been a pure joy to have as a part of our family. Benji is adjusting to the new puppy, however he appears not to be too thrilled right now On the otherhand these two have formed quite a bond: Ah, a boy and his dog...

A couple of years ago, my mother was driving her '05 Cobalt base sedan and constantly complaining about how hard it was to get in and out of it. She became aware of the 3 boxy hatchbacks that were hitting the market... xB, Cube, and Soul. She was enamored, I was bemused. Until I realized that for a little lady of her age (4'11", age 65 at the time), the ease of entry and cabin volume with small footprint, affordability and good fuel mileage might be ideal for her. So after test driving the Cube and Soul (with her in the passenger seat, amusingly), she decided on the Cube for its laid back, rolling living room feel and "unique" looks. The flat seats and soft suspensio…

It's still March, but today was 92. Seems too early for such warm weather, that's a May temp here normally. But I have used the A/C in the car during the last week. Cleaned the house ceiling fans and replaced the A/C filters today...A/C season will be here soon. Anyone else notice unseasonably warm weather in their area during March?

I attended the Philadelphia Main Street in Motion ride and drive event last July (2011). However, I am not able to locate any information on this event continuing in 2012. Does anyone know if GM is still putting on this show in cities across America?

At this point I'm curious about buying a vehicle out-of-state and registering it in my state. If it were to happen, it would be a Pennsylvania vehicle coming to New Jersey. I'm wondering how different a PA state title is from a NJ state title? Specifically, would there be additional information I would need to secure in order to convert a PA title to a NJ title?

So the Tablet craze got me thinking, Ford has their whole Sync world with USB upgrades. GM has their version coming out MyLink, they have also their Android App to help you better interface with the VOLT. So with this in mind, what would it take to have an Auto maker decide to just have a 10" tablet holder in the center dash with a USB port. Just plug in your tablet and have say suction cups that hold it in place and boom. Up comes an interface allowing you to totally manage everything in your car. This way depending on how you interface to the world, via Apple, Windows, Linux, you have a nice to use interface and the abilityto customize it. I see this as reducing the c…

* Spring is a great time to be a sports fan, with NCAA March Madness, the start of baseball season, near the end of the basketball & hockey seasons, soccer season, etc. Watching the Cincinnati/Ohio State NCAA game & anticipating the upcoming Kentucky/Louisville match, I thought about rivalries between cities, particularly those of all the different Chicago sports teams. What other cities/teams have rivalries? CHICAGO vs DETROIT Bears ... Lions White Sox ... Tigers Bulls ... Pistons Blackhawks ... Red Wings CHICAGO vs ST LOUIS Cubs ... Cardinals Blackhawks ... Blues CHICAGO vs GREEN BAY Bears ... Packers CHICAGO vs MILWAUKEE Cubs ... Brewers Bulls .…

Lately I've been considering just what sort of serious vehicle purchase will come next for me. And by serious, I mean one that isn't a project or so old as to be impractical as a daily driver. At some point, I will need to replace the Tahoe and the ROPOS with a half-decent truck that I can plow with and use for all of the things I do workwise. But that can happen over time since the Tahoe now owes me some miles (and I like it). The vehicle I am considering will have to be better on fuel than the Tahoe (not hard to do), be a manual, and be something I can enjoy when I drive it. It will also have to be low-mileage and long trip worthy since I am way overdue for some goo…

Why not? We all love to snap pictures! And we have some very talented photographers. For the rest of us, their criticism is very much appreciated. I covered a rugby game today and this will probably be the headliner photo: Also liked this one:

* I love "March Madness", the NCAA basketball tournament. I enjoy watching the games, particularly the close ones, witnessing the comebacks, being stunned by the shockers. I'm not exactly sure what the attraction is (perhaps the part of me that loves timelines?), but I'm addicted to watching the brackets as teams advance & others are eliminated. So, with "March Madness", the "Monte" edition "BRACKETS".... ROADS REGION Knight Division 6 = 1978-1980 3 = 1981-1988 Shield Division 7 = 2000-2005 2 = 1973-1975 WHEELS REGION Monte Division 8 = 1970-1972 1 = 1995-1999 Carlo Division 5 = 2006-2007 4 = 1976-1977 "Complete" your brackets by indicating your pic…

TORONTO - Lets just call it the Miracle on the 403. “I thought it was a fatal for sure,” said freelance photographer Andrew Collins. “The transport truck had flipped right on top of a Mazda SUV and flattened it right at the ramp at the 403 and Dundas at the Mississauga-Oakville border.” The veteran Collins said it was not just the horrific sight that seemed ominous but the way the first responders were carrying themselves. http://www.torontosu...-of-expert-work “It was a miraculous recovery,” he said. “She was flown to St. Mikes, treated for minor bruises and scrapes and then released."

Well, 10 years ago today - March 15, 2002 - I became a member of CheersandGears.com. I am not the oldest posting member by any means, [cough]Camino[/cough] , but I have never left this place for more than a week's time (hey, sometimes I needed a vacation!). I have learned quite a bit about my favorite automaker, more than I sometimes wanted to know about other automakers, have met a bunch of C&G members over the years in person, and have been blessed with gifts from members past and present (and have tried to do my share of "passing it forward"). This is the place I come to for my daily dose of automobilia and don't foresee me leaving any time soon (God willingly!)…

I just spent several hours on the phone with ebay support, jumping through hoops and repeating myself. Would someone do me a favor and click on this link to see of my listing is actually there? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330701073521&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649#ht_522wt_907 I hasn't shown up in an ebay search after I listed it this morning, then ebay thought I was not who I said I was so I had to re-list it. Now, I'm waiting (again) for "up to 8 hours" for it to show up in a search. I'd just like to know if you see it when you click the link. I'll check the search (again) later.

was setting up today..... caught some nice pics of the new GM stuff. more in a bit...... impressions ATS is sharp, looks more egglike in person but extremely dynamic. New XTS is large! Boatlike, between the two new Cadillacs, a very definite shift in design......more egglike, less chiseled, quite futuristic. In ten years one will be able to see how these cars ushered in new design directions Encore - extremely impressed. For the small size it looks robust and substantial. Should be a huge hit with women. New Fusion and Escape - i gotta say, the new Escape could possibly be a miss. I did not like it from the first look. I think folks like the tough boxy look! …

I'm wondering if there is a really good online site to use to build a vehicle as if one were placing an order with a dealer. I'm not interested in pricing as much as I am packages and free-flow options. Specifically looking for GM vehicles to build... used GM's own site for many years, but it always seems I can't select certain items or select items do not appear. TIA!!

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Hm5o6u1b8pw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> The YouTube video above comes to us courtesy of good old French automaker and new-found GM ally Citroën. In the ad, a strapping young lad pilots a C3 hatchback around a city and is attacked by some fetching young ladies. However, if you watch the ad, something will catch your eye before you make it to the brunette in the black dress 5 seconds in. Okay, never mind the fact the dude is driving a C3 wearing D&G badges. That's not what's strange here. At about 3 seconds in, you notice a taxi cab. It isn't just any taxi cab, though. It's a…

I'm embarking on yet another car search. It seems to be a yearly occurrence for me, though I still have a ways to go to reach the likes of Ocnblu's quarterly car purchasing spree. I'm probably not too far off at this rate... While I've loved my Legacy Turbo, it's becoming a bit of a burden. It's hard on insurance, even harder on gas, and hasn't been holding up as well as I had hoped. It's a great car with a performance pedigree (if you ignore the soft suspension, anyways), and It's likely to be my favorite over time. With that said, it has some faults that I overlooked originally. The most notable has to be the aforementioned gas mileage with my average often hanging bel…

What's a vehicle you like from a manufacturer you otherwise don't really care for? It can be old or new. My old one: Toyota FJ45 (After the the weak kneed drive train is swapped out for a Chevy one ton one of course: My new one: Iveco Massif. (Seriously, Fiat should import this as a Jeep, not whatever FWD Fiat clown car it wants to sully the Jeep name with this time.)

" Finding Long Lost Friends " READ THE COMPLETE ARTICLE HERE: http://www.motorgnomes.com/2012/02/finding-long-lost-friends/ """ Walking home from 5th grade the Friday of Labor Day weekend 1984 I was on a bit of a high. We were, after all, about to embark on a special trip north to see relatives in Minnesota. However, as I rounded the corner of the old Gromer's Supermarket store [the building of which is now gone, in favor of a new fire station; I suppose SOME progress is good], my mood dropped considerably, as I didn't see "my" 1976 Monte Carlo ... anywhere…

* I haven't posted in a while because I had been back to work full-time & just didn't have the time to "keep up", get enough rest/sleep, remain in Cardiac Rehab, among other responsibilities. But, now, as of 02/23/2012, less than 3 weeks after returning to full-time work after my 11/11/2011 open heart surgery, I find myself ... unemployed. To say I'm stunned/numb is just the tip of the iceberg. I've already started the process of "scaling back" financially (including dropping some sponsorships & donations), have applied for unemployment, & started the process of looking for a new job. The last time this happened (April 2005, due to the Sears/Kmart merger)…

Out with February, out with winter, out with the Challenger. I will not be seeking an immediate replacement. The used car market in my area is a non-stop barrage of overpriced and high-mileage junk. Yesterday's retail prices have become today's wholesale values. Four-grand will only buy you an unlovable, worn out sedan or SUV with near or at 200,000 miles, a mange-riddled paint job, an arthritic suspension, and a catatonic engine. If you're really lucky, four-grand more will buy you a cramped compact sedan with 70,000 miles that's been built out of pure tapioca and subjected to a previous life of hardcore prostitution. If by the grace of God a realistic deal comes your w…

OK, I feel a bit odd making this post here, but you guys have been my friends for so long now that I had to let you know what's up. Later this year, I will be publishing a collection of my writings from about 1979 to the present. For a while now, I have been sifting through old notebooks, and boxes of papers to extract this stuff. The book will be composed of prose, poetry and song lyrics that have needed a mission for a very long time. I'll update you later as things progress.
