The Year Is: 1940 The year is 1940 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike has just opened it's first section. You're going to be traveling on this section from now on and you want a car that can keep up with traffic and not be a rattle can at higher speeds. As one of the first drivers on this section of road, what would you drive? ************************************************* I'd drive a 1940 Oldsmobile convertible. No only does it have everything, it also has a Hydra-Matic transmission so I don't have to ride the clutch through all those toll booths. Boo-yah!

If there is enough intrest in such thing I have other stuff to post releated. I subscribed to Collectible Automobile magazine for years. They do a nice job with their photos and the info in the text. Now I just buy the issues containing vehicles I am really interested in. . I snagged the current issue yesterday off the magazine rack. It features full-sized Oldsmobiles from 1971-'76. Some nice pix accompanying the article, including a '72 98 Regency just like the car I had up into 1978. Also some really nice pix of a '56 DeSoto Fireflite.

Reddit — if you actually stay awake and pay attention to what's what around the world wide web — is typically a festering rathole, good for hosting line after spewing line of junk data. As a website that idenitfies itself as the leading middle-man for quote-unquote "social news" it brings the concept of citizen journalism to an all-time record low, and any content of actual relevance and solidity seems to give Gawker and its network of bastard children CSPAN-like levels of credibility in outright comparison. It's a forum for the huddled and uninformed, unwashed masses of the world with a hi-speed internet connection to make a poor and weak-hearted attempt to be informed a…

http://autos.yahoo.com/news/10-bad-luck-cars.html The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety offers consumers valuable data about current automobiles. By compiling and analyzing claims information, the data helps drivers choose the safest vehicle available when considering what car to purchase. The most recent issue of the IIHS Status Report, published Sept. 20, contains a table of personal injury protection (PIP) claims for cars manufactured between 2009 and 2011. It also ranks the 10 most dangerous cars on the road by that metric. The data shows that smaller cars were involved in accidents with the most frequency. This is partially a matter of physics, since a small …

The Year Is: 1991 The year is 1991. Your son has just turned 16 and the two of you have just finished a father son project in time for him to drive to school for the first time. Things are going well until you get a call from the principal that your son has been a tad irresponsible in the school parking lot with his new found freedom/ride. Many people know that the best way to keep the underside of you car from rusting is to keep wash the salt from it every once in a while. You don't just want to let it be wet when you're done though, you want to air it out so it can dry.

I've always been a fan of "sleepers"; you know, the kinds of cars that are very unassuming in appearance but can really kick @ss out on the streets. I've owned several of them over the years but I'll start with my most recent: This was a 1994 Dodge Spirit. I picked it up with 48K miles on it in 1998. It was powered by a the Mitsu 3.0L V6 backed up by a solid-shifting A670 3-speed auto tranny. For whatever reason, this car would flat-out HAUL. Low curb weight was one reason I'm sure (~2700 lbs.), but the V6 in this thing seemed especially hot. One of my favorite experiences with the Spirit was when I was coming home late one night. I was on a 4-lane highway with traffi…

You guys have all been unwilling witnesses to my fruitless search for a decent plow truck, and distractions with more interesting stuff as I look for ways to get things rolling on my personal automotive front. Sorry about that if it transferred my frustration into yours! When is he going to freakin' buy something?!! Well, maybe not until I sell my daily driver Tahoe. I'm unlikely to find what I'm looking for within budget, so that means I have to find a way to increase the budget, and selling the Tahoe is probably the most effective move I can make on that front. Of course that means I have to push the wagon back into service for a while which I hadn't planned on. G…

The Year Is: 1989 The year is 1989. You're a snow plow contractor and you've been noticing an uptick in the number of people with smaller lots and driveways that your full sized pickup doesn't fit in so well. You hate to turn down good business, but your current solution is lacking in traction. You decide to try a midsized or smaller SUV for these smaller jobs and see how it works out. Besides, you still have your full sized truck for big jobs so it's not like this one is going to be clearing any airport runways or anything. ... For that white Honda Accord. The Astra has started randomly quitting on me. I have absolutely no clue as to why, nor do I know what spurred it on. It first happened four nights ago as I was rounding a turn at 20 mph. I actually didn't even realize the car had quit at first; I was hitting the throttle and realized the engine wasn't responding and the rev counter was at zero. I pulled off to the side of the road and it restarted as if nothing happened. It did pretty much the exact same thing heading home tonight. No warning, nothing. On another note, the gas guage and fuel range read outs no longer sync up. Again, no idea why. Considering there's so few of these …

See, I wasn't kidding--the plane in the background is the Lockheed L188 Electra, a 4-engined turboprop that began its career in 1957. I flew on one of these circa 1965, between Denver, CO and Sioux Falls, SD. A few L188 Electras are still in use today, usually for fire-fighting.

The Year Is: 1972 The year is 1972. You've been running hooch for a while now and you current car is in kind of tough shape after your latest escapade. The money has been good though, so you decided it's time to upgrade your ride. A full sized car won't fit in your shed and a small/pony car doesn't have the trunk space for merchandise. Police in your neck of the wood have been getting steadily more powerful cars over the past few years so a fast engine is a must. To this end, you decide a midsized two door with a big cube engine will get you where you need to go and leave the police in the dust. You guys know of my love of small cars, these two are just awesome, and I think about them all the time. #2. 1964 Chevy Malibu SS....Everyone thinks of the 64 GTO, 64 SS Chevelle is a nice design, you see 65's but not 64's. #3. 49 Olds 88...larger motor, lighter body15 years before the GTO. Paced the Indy 500 that year. #4. Lumina Z34...came with a five speed, wore the understated look of the GM era well... #5. 1926 Pontiac...god clean first year design for Pontiac. Only seen a few in my life but they seem damn near perfect. Your lists....?

I want to know how not to be a dick when dealing with people selling used motorcycles. This is all private sales; no dealerships. The problem is that their price is often too high when Kelley Blue Book and mileage values are factored in. I'm reasonable but when you have bikes that are nearly ten years old, being priced as if they're three years old, that's either being obnoxious or showing no research whatsoever. So when I send an offer, I provide a link to the KBB website, as well as links to other classified ads in nearby cities of the same bike or one that's similar. Also, I've included links to sales threads on forums devoted to the particular bike brand or model. …

Driver swerves to avoid moose, hits bear instead Motorist escapes uninjured but animal is wounded OSLO, Norway — A Norwegian driver who swerved his car on a rural road to avoid running into a moose hit a bear instead, authorities said on Thursday. The driver spotted the moose on a country road near Hanestad, 225 kilometers (140 miles) north of Oslo, around midnight on Wednesday, and tried to go around the animal, not realizing that a bear was also nearby. "The driver had lost a bit of speed as he tried to avoid the moose before hitting the bear," said Svein Erik Bjorke of the local wildlife authority, who was out in the forest searching for the wounded animal. "We ar…

Science has discovered the heaviest element yet known to man. The new element is Governmentium (Gv). It has one neutron, 25 assistant neutrons, 88 deputy neutrons and 198 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312. These 312 particles are held together by forces called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lefton-like particles called peons. Since Governmentium has no electrons or protons, it is inert. However, it can be detected, because it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact. A tiny amount of Governmentium can cause a reaction normally taking less than a second to take from four days to four years to complete. Gove…

http://www.forbes.com/sites/louiswoo...kruptcy-again/ From the article: President Obama is proud of his bailout of General Motors. That's good, because, if he wins a second term, he is probably going to have to bail GM out again. The company is once again losing market share, and it seems unable to develop products that are truly competitive in the U.S. market. Right now, the federal government owns 500,000,000 shares of GM, or about 26% of the company. It would need to get about $53.00/share for these to break even on the bailout, but the stock closed at only $20.21/share on Tuesday. This left the government holding $10.1 billion worth of stock, and sitting on an unr…

The Year Is: 1988 The year is 1988. You've recently moved to Minnesota and just now learned it occasionally snows there. Since you don't want your current daily driver to get rusty with all the road salt, you decide a domestic front wheel drive car with sporty pretensions would fun to drive in the winter without the risk of ruining your extra-magnum sized Suburban. Whether it's a left over 1987 or one of the new 1988s doesn't make any difference to you. What does though, is which one? 1988 Pontiac LeMans 1987 Buick Skyhawk T-Type 1987 Chevrolet Celebrity Eurosport VR 1987 Chevrolet Sprint Turbo 1987 Dodge Charger 1987 Dodge Lancer Shelby 1987 Do…

So my grandpa had an old model when I was a kid that I always liked, but I never knew what I was, only that it was a very old car, Pre-WWII. Well, lately, I've inherited it so to speak (he's been gone since '99 or so). I've been trying to find out what it was but I never had anything to go on, and I know precious little about prewar automobiles. It's a very old car certainly, I would guess around 1915, seeing as that was the year he was born. It's missing it's radiator cap, so if it had a car mascot, there's no way I could have known; but there is an emblem on the radiator housing/grille that has a red R inside a rectangle. Because of this, we thought it could have been …

All night long. Kind of cool and I am going to share it. But I warn you, my subconscious is kind of a strange place to be. And I hope I don't offend anyone with my dream, I just want to tell you guys about it because you guys were in it. But don't say I didn't warn you... So as I start dreaming I find myself walking up to Balthazar's house, as he's asked me over to have a ride in his newest toy. A perfectly restored 1964 Black Pontiac Grand Prix. We're cruising along the New Jersey Turnpike, chatting away, talking about my sons music and his son's band, vintage cars and the like when we start talking to each other in French for some odd reason. Balthazar pulls off…

I've been to many car shows and I can usually find something to appreciate in any of them. This show, however, quickly has become one of my favorites. Walking around the Hershey Hotel, you see so many great cars that you could not find gathered in many places in the world...let alone, in Pennsylvania. If you love classic cars, this show should be on your schedule for next year. It's gathered such a reputation that organizers from some of the more established shows have made it a point to visit this one. http://automotivetraveler.com/jump/4185

"Finding trust & love is not always easy to make" __ Yael Naim __ 'New Soul' After experiencing a roller coaster last weekend of July, I decided to post 1 last "commentary". We live in a very small world. And, we don't always realize it. Fellow "roadie" Denny G & I have had several "misses" meeting in person, including a stop in Amarillo TX in 2011. We were in that town the SAME night, but didn't realize it until a day or so later while comparing "current road trip" notes. So, when Denny told me about his Route 66 trip this year, we were determined to meet. Before he left, we briefly discussed the possibility of me driving with him to St Louis, Friday, 07/2…

So when was the last time you saw the Blue Angels fly or Hydroplane boats race? This weekend, Seattle is having their Annual Hydroplane boat races on Lake washington and the Blue Angels show Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Temps are to be in the low to mid 80's with about 20% humidity. http://www.seafair.com/default.aspx?SecID=915 The blue angels are doing their practice runs right now so Seattle is a Sonic Boom zone. Having grown up here in Washington, I cannot ever imagen summer without the boat races and the blue angels. I loved the roar of the piston powered Hydroplane boats, Have gotten used to the Turbine powered boats, but still enjoy the morning heats when the pi…

Video: "Total Recall" featurette: Hover Car - Watch how the producers of the upcoming remake of "Total Recall" choose not to use CGI to create the hover cars used in the film and the technology they employed to make these cars "real". Link: http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/total-recall-2012/trailers/total-recall-featurette-hover-car-30145564.html\ *I've got to say I'm excited to see this remake. I know a lot of people, myself included, complain that Hollywood recycles more than creates today, but I was a fan of the original 1990 movie though the special effects were definitly not up to par in that movie. From the trailers I've been interested in seeing this futuristic …

I have a Dodge Caliber as my rental for a few days with 40k miles on it. It is an absolute pile... the best thing Dodge could have done is take it out back and shoot it. But that got me thinking, even just since the Caliber, the quality of vehicles has improved dramatically. So sound off, what are the worst new cars in production and on sale today?

I'm getting pretty damned old so my car jones has been acting up a lot more lately. I started a list of cars I'd like to have before it's too late. You'll notice my choices ain't particularly exotic or even necessarily pricey. I've never been a fan of the hoity-toity, high-priced machinery that only the execs of fortune 500 companies can afford...anyway, here's my first crack at the bucket list. Laugh if you want. In no particular order: 1956-’57 Corvette (doesn’t need to be FI or even dual quad; these were simply gorgeous cars) 1956 Plymouth Fury ('nuff said) 1956 Mercury Montclair (had the looks, performance & handling of its “Mexican Road Race” Lincoln cousins…

Finally am getting back out in my shop. I've spent a couple hours for 3 nights cleaning thru stuff & throwing things away, and tonight I began the process of pouring a concrete 'curb' around the inside perimeter of my building. This is because when the floor was originally poured, the bordering form wood to control the pour has rotted over time, and mice have been sneaking in. I hate mice. Anyway, the perimeter is lined with all sorts of stuff, primarily car parts but some outright junk, and I want it all either stored off the floor or sold/tossed. I got only 10-ft done tonight (perimeter is about 110' (24'x48' building with (4) car doors), but chalk that up to getti…

"I'm walking down the lonely street of dreams" __ Whitesnake __ 'Here I Go Again On My Own' I never thought I'd say or type these words... "My Monte Carlos are sold."
