  1. Cadillac is getting ready to launch the new XT5 and it is only the beginning a new crossover offensive from the luxury brand. Speaking to Automotive News, Cadillac president Johan de Nysschen said a variation of the XT5's platform will be used for a new three-row crossover in the near future. "It's one of the benefits of having this very flexible architecture. We can expand it, make it longer and wider. That gives us the ability to develop the car very quickly, as opposed to starting from scratch," said de Nysschen. Despite some outlets reporting that Cadillac has begun testing the new crossover, de Nysschen said this project only began sometime last year. "It's not running yet. "It is a program request that we initiated with the engineers only last year. They are working at remarkable, record-breaking speed to get us the car." This platform is expected to be found under the next-generation Buick Enclave and Chevrolet Traverse, due next year. de Nysschen also hinted that the XT5 in the U.S. could get the turbo 2.0L as an option. I actually think we would do well to consider that for the U.S.," said de Nysschen. At the moment, the Chinese market XT5 will only get turbo 2.0L.   2. Usually the rule with vehicles is that the older they get, the heavier and bigger they become. The Ford Taurus mostly follows this rule. Outside the car is big and heavy, while the interior isn't. It can be best described as a rolling sensory deprivation tank. However a new report from Edmunds says the next-generation Taurus plans to rectify that. A source tells Edmunds that Ford plans a major weight-loss plan for the Taurus. It begins with a modified Fusion platform that will be extended and widened for the Taurus. "The problem with today's Taurus is that it is overweight and even the high performance SHO is not really competitive. With all the power from the (365-horsepower) V6 EcoBoost, it is pretty hard to overcome the amount of mass that the SHO has to move." The Taurus SHO "actually weighs about as much as the stretched Audi A8 L. Of course, Audi uses an extensive amount of aluminum, but it is a much bigger car," the source said.   3. Infiniti and Mercedes-Benz are working on a new vehicle architecture that will underpin four new vehicles, including a new crossover. This information comes courtesy of Johan de Nysschen, the head of Infiniti who was speaking to Bloomberg at the Detroit Auto Show. de Nysschen did not talk about whether the new architecture will be front/all-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive, and how many of those new vehicles would be Infiniti and/or Mercedes-Benz. de Nysschen did say is that first model with this new architecture will appear in 2017. According to The Nikkei, Honda is looking at using a common platform for the Accord, Civic, and CR-V. The three models would share 40 to 50% parts when the next generation models would arrive from 2015 to 2017. Currently, the Civic and CR-V share around 20% of parts and neither model shares with the Accord. Honda is also planning to increase global sales, setting a goal of 6 million vehicles by 2016. The platform, known as MSB, will use a mix of both steel and aluminium, be able to accept either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, and use the next-generation V12 engines. This new model would likely become the brand's flagship vehicle and it will not be like your conventional luxury sedan. "Above Q70 you need a car that competes with 7-series, S-class, and Audi A8. That’s conventional thinking. There’s enough action going on in that segment. I don’t think the world needs another car like that. But I do think the world needs an upscale, very emotional, high-performance luxury sedan from Infiniti that might be a different concept," said de Nysschen. Whatever that mean is anyone's guess. de Nysschen went onto say that if the flagship is given the go ahead, its platform will be used for a GT coupe. “I think we need some kind of sexy sports car that might share powertrains and platforms with [the range-topping sedan], but an even more emotional iteration.” Sadly this new GT will not be the Emerg-E concept which was shown the door due to the high pricetag.
