William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com February 4, 2012 Back in January, BMW announced $900 million investment into their Spartanburg, S.C. plant to bring forth 300 new jobs and to make way for a forth vehicle to be built. That forth vehicle is a smaller version of the X6 called the X4. Auto Express has done a couple renderings of what the X4 could look like when it goes into production in 2014. The X4 will share the overall shape of the X6 including a sloping roofline, unique lights and bumpers, and a distinct front end. The X4 will use the X3’s platform and share engines. BMW is working on a number of electric vehicles that will be coming out in the coming years, including a replacement for the 3-Series GT. We reported back in January that the 3-Series GT would be cut from BMW's lineup possibly due to poor sales (we didn't fully buy the reason of 3-Series GT overlapping the 4-Series Gran Coupe and causing confusion for buyers). But a new report from Autocar says the 3-Series GT will live on as a 4-Series model. Due in 2019, the 4-Series GT will replace both 3-Series GT and 4-Series Gran Coupe - the latter according to report has been a slow-selling model. There is a dispute to this claim as Motor1 reported last month the Gran Co…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com January 15, 2013 Along with the 4-Series Coupe concept and new M6 Gran Coupe, BMW introduced a new 3-Series model at the Detroit Auto Show. No, its not the 3-Series diesel or the new M3. What it happens to be is the new 320i, the most affordable 3-Series. The 320i has been on sale other markets since the current-generation 3 Series was introduced, but it goes on sale in the US this spring with a starting price of $33,445* (includes $895 for destination), which is $3,405 less than the base price of the 328i ($36,850). For that price, you get a 2.0L turbocharged inline-four producing 180 horsepower and 200 pound-feet. S…

The BMW 2-Series has a new member of the family. The 2016 BMW M2 is what happens when BMW's M department is given free-reign on the smallest of BMW models. Outside, the M2 looks the part with larger front intakes, wider fenders, rear diffuser, and 19-inch forged aluminum wheels. Move inside and you'll find Alcantara on door panels, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and leather seats with adjustable bolsters. Power comes from a turbocharged 3.0L Inline-Six that has been tinkered with to produce 365 horsepower and 343 pound-feet of torque. This can either be paired to a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. BMW quotes 0-60 MPH times of 4.4 seconds f…

While the BMW i8 Coupe is heading into production, the convertible version has hit a snag or two. Autocar has learned from a BMW spokesperson that the i8 Spyder has presented "major challenges" in the engineering department. The problem is due to the carbon fiber-reinforced plastic construction that provides the rigidity and lightness for i8. If you take off the roof like on the i8 Spyder, it becomes very difficult to add rigidity to the shell. "The last architecture presented some fairly major challenges, to be able to produce a convertible in that format. The rigidity was hard to find with that particular architecture," said a BMW spokesman. The spokesman went onto sa…

When BMW introduced the 2019 8-Series back in June, they only announced one powertrain - a turbocharged 4.4L V8 producing 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque paired up with xDrive all-wheel drive. As we said in our report, expect BMW to detail other engines in due course. Australia's GoAuto had the chance to speak with Carsten Groeber, BMW's vice-president of product management (luxury class). He revealed that the V12 from the M760Li xDrive would not be offered. “V12 is very heavy and we have a very perfect weight distribution with this car. So the package with the V8 with those technologies with the chassis and the drivetrain makes the car a proper spor…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com May 30, 2013 While it might not be the most exciting vehicle in the BMW lineup, the X5 has played a very important role for BMW. Since its introduction back in 1999, BMW has moved close to 1.3 million X5s. Last year, the X5 was BMW USA's third best selling vehicle, right behind the 3 and 5-Series. But with the current X5 going on seven years, BMW knew it was time to introduce a new X5. The 2014 BMW X5's design is very much in line with the current X3. Up front is a wide kidney grill that is flanked by a set of Adaptive Xenon headlights. There is also a set redesigned air intakes. Along the side is a distinctive charac…

Spied: 2008 BMW 6-Series Looks like the 2008 BMW 6 Series is getting some exterior updates. Well, actually it doesn't look like it's getting some updates, but when you examine these pictures very closely there are some subtle changes to this 6 Series test mule that indicate a midcycle refresh. The front air dam has a slightly different shape around the fog lights while the rear end is sporting a slightly revised fascia as well. We didn’t catch any interior shots, but we're guessing the 6 Series will get the same shifter first introduced in the X5 along with some minor trim changes. Look for the 2008 BMW 6 Series in dealers by the end of this year. Edmunds

Eight speeds and a more voluptuous look? by Brenda Priddy | (2007-07-16) | Link to Original Article @ TCC A refreshed BMW 7-Series is undergoing testing, and TheCarConnection.com's spies have nabbed it a year before it goes on sale. We're expecting the new 7-Series to have a completely new front end, similar to the 6-Series styling, and sources say the current model's extravagant design will be toned down quite a bit. The sedan should have a more elegant look than ever before. The position of the headlights and turn signals indicate low-mounted, wrap-around headlights and a wide grille, as well as a sleeker body and a more dramatic overall appearance. In addition to…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 19, 2012 BMW has long maintained there would be no M version of the 7-Series sedan, despite competitors offering a performance version of their flagship sedans. However, BMW could be changing their tune. Automobile Magazine has learned the next generation 7-Series could be seeing a sort of, kind of M7 called the M770i xDrive. The M770i xDrive will likely use a 4.0L twin-turbo V8 producing 475 HP and 480 lb-ft of torque. While those numbers sound impressive, the M770i xDrive pales in comparison to the V12 760i which comes with 570 HP and a 665 lb-ft of torque. But the M770i xDrive will be more agile than a 760i than…

BMW's M division thought the M2 wasn't hot enough, so they went to work and the end result is the 2019 M2 Competition. It begins under the hood with the 3.0L twin-turbo inline-six where BMW has increased the output to 405 horsepower and 406 pound-feet - up 40 and 63 respectively. This launches the M2 Competition to 60 mph in 4 seconds with the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission or 4.2 seconds with the six-speed manual. Both times are a tenth of a second faster than the standard M2. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph, but can increase to 174 with the M Drivers package. Whenever one German automaker does something new, others will follow. For example, the BMW X6 caused Mercedes-Benz to launch the GLE-Coupe. Now with the launch of the Mercedes-Benz X-Class in certain markets, BMW's Australian office is pushing the main office for a pickup truck. “We cannot close our eyes and neglect it, we cannot neglect market trends,” said Marc Werner, head of BMW Australia. "We have been very pushy regarding utes or pick-ups, and we believe that this is something the company should be looking into. We have raised that with headquarters and certainly investigations are happening as we speak, but it’s too early to speak about the results of tha…

After many years, auto enthusiasts in the United States can purchase a 2024 BMW Z4 with a six-speed manual. Production is scheduled for the first quarter of 2024 and no pricing has been released, but there is some speculation. BMW’s more powerful Z4 M40i will exclusively have the option of a manual gearbox. M40i Z4’s come with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with 328 horsepower and 369 lb-ft. This unique manual transmission was a collaboration between BMW and transmission company ZF. Manual-equipped Z4s get a rear axel from the BMW M240i which gives the Z4 an M Performance limited-slip differential. Other changes compared to the automatic include stiffer front a…

BMW appears to be making a number of changes to future plans once again. According to a report from Automobile Magazine, a number of BMW i models have been canned. They include a proposed i9 flagship sedan (replaced by a slightly smaller i7 sedan), the i5 which was supposed to arrive in 2023, and an even larger version of the i3. Other plans that reportedly been canceled include a supercar plan with McLaren and new vehicle architecture with Diamler. The situation is somewhat worse at Mini. Automobile said plans for a joint development of a new small car platform with Toyota have fallen through. It was expected this platform would have underpin the next-generation Min…

"Happiness isn't around the corner. Happiness IS the corner." So said an ad for BMW created in 1996 for the Z3. In the TV version (see the video at the very bottom after the break), a heavy-metal music track underlined the idea, which was carried over to magazines and billboards. I'm reminded of that ad, one of the more perfect expressions of the BMW brand I have ever seen, this week as I take in the Bavarian automaker's plan to launch vehicles powered by "alternative" powertrains under the "i" sub-brand: as in, yes, iPad, iPod, iMac. So far, I'm not hearing about Apple filing trademark infractions. It is, I believe, also "i" as i Isetta, the last time BMW brought out a …

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 7, 2013 Audi has done it since the start of their S and RS lineup; Mercedes-Benz has begun to do it with AMG, and now it appears BMW is thinking about adding it to their M cars again. What am I referring to is the addition of all-wheel drive. Motoring spoke with BMW M's president Friedrich Nitschke who revealed that the next-generation M5 and M6 could come with the option of all-wheel drive. “On our cars we are thinking of all-wheel drive, but it won’t come before we get the successor of the M5 and M6. Hitless: BMW Gets "Death Penalty" From Search Engine Date posted: 02-09-2006 MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Internet search giant Google temporarily removed BMW's main German Web site, bmw.de, and all its subsites, after the German carmaker was caught cheating to get more "hits" from searchers. Back in 2003, Harvard Law School professor Jonathan Zittrain coined the phrase "Google Death Penalty" to describe the company's method of removing those who break the Internet social contract from its search functions. This week, bmw.de learned what that penalty feels like; the automaker's site was briefly removed from Google, and its all-important PageRank was dropped to 0. Reportedl…

There are days where we find ourselves wondering what goes through the head of executives of German automakers on some of the things they say. For example, BMW Australia’s Managing Director, Marc Werner told Motoring there could be a BMW pickup. “Never say never,” said Werner when asked about Mercedes-Benz's upcoming truck. “We’re watching the space closely.” “It’s easier for Mercedes [to bring a ute to market] because they have commercial vehicles and trucks and vans. We do not.” If BMW was to go forward, Motoring speculates that the tie-up with Toyota could grant them access to the HiLux truck. These comments are the complete opposite from those made by …

The effects of the on-going trade spat between the U.S. and China are beginning to be felt. According to Reuters, BMW is increasing the pricing on the U.S.-built X5 and X6 crossovers for the Chinese market. In a statement, BMW said the price increases will range from four to seven percent. This will only make a small dent in the 40 percent tariff being slapped on U.S. made vehicles entering China. BMW will be absorbing the remainder of the tariff for the time being. “BMW stands for free (trade) but can’t stand still without taking actions to respond to the market changes,” said a BMW spokeswoman. The German automaker isn't the only one to raise prices on vehicle…

Recently, there has been a shift in BMW's sales plans. Walter Mertl, BMW's Chief Financial Officer, said they have hit the tipping point for internal combustion engines (ICE) and will focus more on electric cars. Mertl also says that ICE vehicle sales have plateaued and will start to decrease. This is due to changes in environmental regulations with stricter or zero emissions. Regulations from China, the European Union, and the United States are causing automakers to expedite creating and producing electric vehicles (EVs). In 2023, 15% of BMWs sold globally were EVs. Their most popular model was the i4 M50 for the second year in a row. BMW is targeting a 33% share by…

We drove the new BMW X3 to Hersheypark for the day, and found that the kids are jaded at their very young ages! I liked the new X3 so much more than the first generation, which I didn't think fully deserved the BMW label. What are your thoughts on the vehicle? Well I guess I won't be adding a 128i to my shopping list. The US base MSRP is $29,375. I was hoping for like $24,900. A single income household like mine can't handle that.

The automaker is testing a two-stage device called the Turbosteamer on a stationary conventional 1.8-liter engine at BMW headquarters here. The device works entirely on the waste heat from the engine. Turbosteamer converts more than 80 percent of the heat energy in the exhaust into usable power, says Raymond Freymann, head of BMW's advanced research and deve…

Spontaneous BMW Combustion and BMW is ignoring it kinda! Came across this story and wow, is this weird. Yup we have heard stories of Humans who spontaneously combust, but BMW? Owners are saying it and some are even being paid to keep quiet according to this ABC story I came across. http://abcnews.go.com/Business/bmw-mystery-fires-abc-news-investigation/story?id=47335778 Seems these fires have happened from sitting for days or just being turned off, but something is causing these German Driving Machines to spontaneously combust. Makes you wonder if this could be BMW's version of GM's Ignition scandal, VW diesel gate or Takata airbags?

According to sources, the sedan is in the cards as the fifth model in the updated MINI lineup. It will use the new Clubman as a base and feature a range of three and four-cylinder engines. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com September 2, 2012 If you happen to be one of those people who has an allergic reaction just seeing a picture of a BMW 5-Series GT, then I recommend closing out or go back to the main page and read something else. Despite the 5-Series GT not being the sales success BMW has wanted it to be, they seem to be soldiering on with it and are working on a smaller version. New spy shots released this week show BMW testing a 3-Series GT. Like the 5-Series GT, this 3-Series GT mule has a rounded roofline. Sources inside BMW say the 3-Series GT will have a more elegant rear end the 5-Series GT. The GT will mirror the 3-Series engin…
