By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com March 12, 2013 Automobile Magazine got their hands on a document issued by BMW to its dealers detailing what products would be arriving to dealers. The information, to say in the least is very interesting. We'll start with the big news first: diesels. July will be the month when BMW will begin production of the 3-Series with a diesel engine. The engine in question is a 2.0L inline-four that will be available in rear or all-wheel drive models. Wearing the 328d badge, it will be available in a sedan and a first for the U.S., a wagon. In other diesel news, the 5-Series will also be getting a twin-turbocharged 3.0L inli…

BMW's M division thought the M2 wasn't hot enough, so they went to work and the end result is the 2019 M2 Competition. It begins under the hood with the 3.0L twin-turbo inline-six where BMW has increased the output to 405 horsepower and 406 pound-feet - up 40 and 63 respectively. This launches the M2 Competition to 60 mph in 4 seconds with the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission or 4.2 seconds with the six-speed manual. Both times are a tenth of a second faster than the standard M2. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph, but can increase to 174 with the M Drivers package. The larger M3/M4 donate some parts to the Competition in the form of a racing-br…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com May 27, 2012 The new craze with luxury automakers is building compact luxury sedans. Audi has a new A3 sedan and Mercedes-Benz is working on the new CLA. Now, BMW is joining the craze with a new 1-Series sedan. Autocar reports that BMW has begun planning a new 1-Series sedan to come out after the new 1-series coupé and convertible. The sedan will be the spiritual successor to the E30 3-Series. The report says the sedan will utlize a RWD platform using some bits from the new 3-Series. This seems a bit odd since BMW is working on a new FWD platform. Powertrains will include four and six-cylinder engines, with an elec…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com September 26, 2012 For the longest time, we've been hearing reports and rumors that BMW would separate the 3-Series sedans and the 3-Series coupe/convertible, giving the coupes and convertibles the 4-Series moniker. Well, a new report from Automobile Magazine says the 4-Series is a done deal. Automobile says BMW is moving this way to make money. Using the example of a similarly equipped 5-Series sedan and 6-Series Gran Coupe, the Gran Coupe would cost a third more than a 5-Series sedan. Separating the coupe and convertible from the sedan would allow BMW to charge a bit more. The model breakdown for the 3-Series and 4-Se…

Rumors of BMW bringing back the 8-Series have been floating around since February when sources revealed there were two proposals on the table; a larger version of the 6-Series Gran Coupe and a new two-door coupe/convertible. This would only intensify over the summer when a report revealed that BMW had trademarked a number of 8-Series names. Now a new report says BMW is going forward with the 8-Series as a coupe. Automobilwoche has learned from sources that BMW will be bringing back the 8-Series in late 2018. The model will fill the gap between the 7-Series and the Rolls-Royce Ghost/Wraith/Dawn, and give the Mercedes S-Class coupe a run for its money. The coupe will c…

The 320i has been on sale other markets since the current-generation 3 Series was introduced, but it goes on sale in the US this spring with a starting price of $33,445* (includes $895 for destination), which is $3,405 less than the base price of the 328i ($36,850). By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com January 30, 2013 BMW is hard at work on a front-wheel drive assault, with the company considering almost twenty-three FWD vehicles (Twelve for BMW, eleven for MINI). One of those vehicles could be a two-seat roadster, due out in 2015 “We are considering a car in the spirit of the original Z3. It is of similar size to the E36/7 [the codename for the Z3 produced between 1996 and 2002] but is planned to use the front-wheel drive platform to keep costs down and achieve a margin level that ensures it is sustainable at comparatively low production volumes,” a BMW official reportedly told Autocar. BMW has been in a holding pattern in terms of producing diesel vehicles for the U.S. as they were awaiting approval from the EPA retesting diesel vehicles. The current BMW i8 uses a plug-in hybrid powertrain to produce a total output of 357 horsepower. But the future version of the i8 could switch to a full EV powertrain. Sources tell Autocar that German automaker would swap the turbocharged three-cylinder in the rear for two electric motors. Each electric motor (there would be three including one up front) is said to produce up to 268 horsepower. With the addition of two electric motors, BMW will add a larger battery. To allow for this, the i8's carbon fiber structure would be modified. BMW already has some ideas as to how to do this as they did an i8 hydrogen prototype where they had to modify the structure to all…

Whether or not you care for the BMW X4 'sport activity coupe', it is a big hit around the world. To keep its popularity up, the German automaker revealed the second-generation X4 this morning. Like the X3 on which it is based, the 2019 X4 sees an increase in overall length (3 inches) and width (2 inches). Most important for those sitting in the back is the extra 2 inches between the wheels, which should help improve rear legroom. The front end is similar to the redesigned X3 with larger kidney grilles, larger air intakes, and a new design for the foglights. The back features a tailgate design similar to the Mercedes-Benz GLC and GLE-Coupes. The inter…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com February 14, 2013 The BMW X6 is one of those vehicles that many ask why. Why does it exist? Well there is some reason as to why BMW is going ahead with a next-generation model, due within the eighteen months. Autocar reports that the next-generation X6 will get a more aggressive appearance, helping differentiating itself from the X5. The X6 will be using the X5’s platform, which will be shorten for the X6.Under the skin, the X6 will retain its monocoque chassis, but use much more high-strength steel. Powertrains will likely remain the same but with some new tweaks. That means the 3.0L turbocharged inline-six and 4.4L…

BMW is working on a number of electric vehicles that will be coming out in the coming years, including a replacement for the 3-Series GT. We reported back in January that the 3-Series GT would be cut from BMW's lineup possibly due to poor sales (we didn't fully buy the reason of 3-Series GT overlapping the 4-Series Gran Coupe and causing confusion for buyers). BMW Quietly Says Good Bye To The X6 ActiveHybrid William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com September 20, 2011 The BMW X6 is an odd vehicle; a coupe-shaped, four-door, SUV thing that appeals to small group of people. Sales in North America have reflected this and now one of its variants is being shown the door. That variant is the X6 ActiveHybrid. Shown at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, the X6 ActiveHybrid used two electric motors to produce 91-hp and 86-hp. Combined with the 4.4L V8, the hybrid produced 480 HP and 575 lb-ft of torque. That gave the X6 ActiveHybrid a 0-60 time of 5.4 seconds and a top speed at 130 MPH, but the fuel economy was …

There are days where we find ourselves wondering what goes through the head of executives of German automakers on some of the things they say. For example, BMW Australia’s Managing Director, Marc Werner told Motoring there could be a BMW pickup. “Never say never,” said Werner when asked about Mercedes-Benz's upcoming truck. “We’re watching the space closely.” “It’s easier for Mercedes [to bring a ute to market] because they have commercial vehicles and trucks and vans. We do not.” If BMW was to go forward, Motoring speculates that the tie-up with Toyota could grant them access to the HiLux truck. These comments are the complete opposite from those made by …

As with the 3-Series sedan, the wagon will come in Sport, Luxury, Modern, and M Sport lines; each providing their own twist on the exterior and interior design. Inside, the back seats split 40:20:40. There's also a hidden storage compartment, a standard partition net, and an automatic tailgate with separate rea…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com May 30, 2013 While it might not be the most exciting vehicle in the BMW lineup, the X5 has played a very important role for BMW. Since its introduction back in 1999, BMW has moved close to 1.3 million X5s. Last year, the X5 was BMW USA's third best selling vehicle, right behind the 3 and 5-Series. But with the current X5 going on seven years, BMW knew it was time to introduce a new X5. The 2014 BMW X5's design is very much in line with the current X3. Up front is a wide kidney grill that is flanked by a set of Adaptive Xenon headlights. There is also a set redesigned air intakes. Along the side is a distinctive charac…

Hitless: BMW Gets "Death Penalty" From Search Engine Date posted: 02-09-2006 MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Internet search giant Google temporarily removed BMW's main German Web site, bmw.de, and all its subsites, after the German carmaker was caught cheating to get more "hits" from searchers. Back in 2003, Harvard Law School professor Jonathan Zittrain coined the phrase "Google Death Penalty" to describe the company's method of removing those who break the Internet social contract from its search functions. This week, bmw.de learned what that penalty feels like; the automaker's site was briefly removed from Google, and its all-important PageRank was dropped to 0. Reportedl…

BMW Turns to Steam to Boost Power, Improve Fuel Economy By FELIX BAUER | AUTOMOTIVE NEWS AutoWeek | Published 02/13/06, 1:17 pm et MUNICH, Germany -- BMW is applying steam-engine technology in an auxiliary drive that the automaker says can boost both power and fuel efficiency in ordinary piston-driven cars. The automaker is testing a two-stage device called the Turbosteamer on a stationary conventional 1.8-liter engine at BMW headquarters here. The device works entirely on the waste heat from the engine. Turbosteamer converts more than 80 percent of the heat energy in the exhaust into usable power, says Raymond Freymann, head of BMW's advanced research and deve…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 7, 2013 Audi has done it since the start of their S and RS lineup; Mercedes-Benz has begun to do it with AMG, and now it appears BMW is thinking about adding it to their M cars again. What am I referring to is the addition of all-wheel drive. Motoring spoke with BMW M's president Friedrich Nitschke who revealed that the next-generation M5 and M6 could come with the option of all-wheel drive. “On our cars we are thinking of all-wheel drive, but it won’t come before we get the successor of the M5 and M6. That’s the timing and it’s not practical to react in the current life cycles. It would also be an additional op…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com June 21, 2012 The saga of what will power the next BMW M3 soliders on. So far, the leading contender is a twin-turbo V6. However, German website BimmerToday says the inline-six will be under the hood. Sources tell BimmerToday that BMW will equip the next M3 with 3.2L inline-six delivering 450 HP (480 HP with a performance package) and reach a top speed of 300 KPH (186 MPH). The fundamentals of the new engine come from the current M3’s 4.0L V8. Sources also reveal that BMW had built some prototype V6 engines for testing under the codename of "Apollo". We’ll see if the next M3 comes with a V6, inline-six, or something co…

Spontaneous BMW Combustion and BMW is ignoring it kinda! Came across this story and wow, is this weird. Yup we have heard stories of Humans who spontaneously combust, but BMW? Owners are saying it and some are even being paid to keep quiet according to this ABC story I came across. http://abcnews.go.com/Business/bmw-mystery-fires-abc-news-investigation/story?id=47335778 Seems these fires have happened from sitting for days or just being turned off, but something is causing these German Driving Machines to spontaneously combust. Makes you wonder if this could be BMW's version of GM's Ignition scandal, VW diesel gate or Takata airbags?

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 19, 2012 BMW has long maintained there would be no M version of the 7-Series sedan, despite competitors offering a performance version of their flagship sedans. However, BMW could be changing their tune. Automobile Magazine has learned the next generation 7-Series could be seeing a sort of, kind of M7 called the M770i xDrive. The M770i xDrive will likely use a 4.0L twin-turbo V8 producing 475 HP and 480 lb-ft of torque. While those numbers sound impressive, the M770i xDrive pales in comparison to the V12 760i which comes with 570 HP and a 665 lb-ft of torque. But the M770i xDrive will be more agile than a 760i than…

After many years, auto enthusiasts in the United States can purchase a 2024 BMW Z4 with a six-speed manual. Production is scheduled for the first quarter of 2024 and no pricing has been released, but there is some speculation. BMW’s more powerful Z4 M40i will exclusively have the option of a manual gearbox. M40i Z4’s come with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with 328 horsepower and 369 lb-ft. This unique manual transmission was a collaboration between BMW and transmission company ZF. Manual-equipped Z4s get a rear axel from the BMW M240i which gives the Z4 an M Performance limited-slip differential. Other changes compared to the automatic include stiffer front a…

Recently, there has been a shift in BMW's sales plans. Walter Mertl, BMW's Chief Financial Officer, said they have hit the tipping point for internal combustion engines (ICE) and will focus more on electric cars. Mertl also says that ICE vehicle sales have plateaued and will start to decrease. This is due to changes in environmental regulations with stricter or zero emissions. Regulations from China, the European Union, and the United States are causing automakers to expedite creating and producing electric vehicles (EVs). In 2023, 15% of BMWs sold globally were EVs. Their most popular model was the i4 M50 for the second year in a row. BMW is targeting a 33% share by…

More 3-Series News: Possible Diesel & Confusion Over The Wagon William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com October 19, 2011 BMW could be bringing a sequel to their previous 3-Series diesel. Inside Line was speaking with BMW's head of sales and marketing, Ian Robertson. Robertson said "the diesel infrastructure is progressing well in the U.S.," and "the negative historical baggage associated with diesel is being removed." "The X5 diesel is doing well in the U.S.. From month-to-month it accounts for a third or half of sales. It is still an issue of getting bums on seats. U.S. buyers are still astonished by how good a modern diesel is." said Ro…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com January 16, 2012 The current BMW X5, which has been on sale since 2006, is getting a bit long in the tooth. BMW knows it and is beginning to work on a next generation model which has been caught by a spy photographer. Like the BMW 3-Series spy photos, the X5 mule has false headlights and taillights, and a lot of camouflage. But, judging from the profile, expect the new X5 to share a resemblance to the current X3 with a blunt front end and a different angle of slope for the tailgate. A source says the new X5 will ride on a on a heavily-modified 5 Series platform; codenamed F15. Engines will likely include BMW’s turbo …
