This engine must sound incredible... the snarl and high-revs of a V10 with the whistle and torque of two turbos.. ptember 5, 2007 Avant one now: it's the Audi RS6! It's finally here. After months of speculation, subterfuge and spy shots, the Audi RS6 has revealed itself to the world. Muscling into Frankfurt to steal the thunder from, well, everything, the RS6 looks like being everything we hoped for - and a bit more besides. Let's start with a few numbers. The new RS6 will be powered by a twin-turbo version of the S6's 5.2-litre V10, which now develops a monstrous 572bhp at 6,250rpm. There's 480lb ft of torque available from as low down as 1,500rpm, helping to…

Bugatti to introduce open-top Veyron Link to Original Article @ LeftLane News Bugatti has long been rumored to be mulling over the idea of producing an open-top version of its outrageous Veyron closed-roof supercar, but now the Volkswagen-owned manufacturer has confirmed plans for a Veyron sans top. The Veyron-without-a-roof will feature a targa-style removable roof over the two passengers in order to maintain structural rigidity. The detachable roof is expected to be glass, so it can't be stored inside the Veyron. But Bugatti engineers think of everything and they're planning to include a soft cloth roof for emergencies. Autogespot reports that the topless Veyron wi…

2010 Porsche Panamera Latest Look Link to Original Article @ AutoWeek | Published 07/10/07, 3:30 pm et Porsche’s four-door Panamera keeps lapping the Nürburgring, as these photos taken hours ago near the main entrance of the “ring” show. Due for a formal unveiling at the 2009 Geneva motor show, Porsche’s Panamera is expected to be a strong competitor for the Mercedes CLS and the future Aston Martin Rapide, as well as Volkswagen’s coming four-door coupe. Though the Panamera takes design elements from the 911 range, there are obvious significant differences. While the 911 has always kept its rear-mounted boxer engine, the Panamera will have a choice of three front-moun…

International Herald Tribune story Skoda, a joke no more, joins Audi in driving Volkswagen profit By Chad Thomas and Andrea Dudikova Bloomberg NewsPublished: February 9, 2007 MLADA BOLESLAV, Czech Republic Volkswagen's executives used to consider Skoda cars so dangerous they refused to drive them, recalled Detlef Wittig, the former VW executive who became Skoda's chief executive. At a meeting 15 years ago, after Volkswagen took control of Skoda Auto, top managers sent the Czech carmaker's engineers home to design a better car. "We told them this is either the end of the story, or you do your job," Wittig said. Skoda executives heeded the criticism and returned mont…

Touareg Troubles Porsche, VW clash over product plans By HENNING KROGH | Link to Original Article @ AutoWeek | Updated: 06/19/07, 9:57 am et WOLFSBURG, Germany -- After taking its major stake in Volkswagen AG, sports car manufacturer Porsche AG is pushing to speed up the companies' joint projects. That confirms many VW shareholders' fears that Porsche CEO Wendelin Wiedeking wants to increase Porsche's influence over VW product planning. He has been a member of the VW supervisory board since 2006. A dispute is looming over the introduction of the next-generation Porsche Cayenne and VW Touareg. The two companies again are developing the large SUVs in close cooperatio…

Spied: 2008 Porsche Boxster MCE More images of the 2008 Porsche Boxster have turned up, this time with the car undergoing performance testing at Germany’s Nurburgring track. Like the facelifted 911, which is due to hit the market by the end of the year, Porsche’s new Boxster is only expected to get a few minor changes to its exterior. New additions to the ’08 model include a revised front bumper with LED daytime running lights and more circular air intakes. The headlights too, which feature some camouflaging tape, are also likely to come in for a change, as will the rear bumper. The final change is the new taillights, which also gets the LED treatment. According to spy shooter Hans Lehmann, the snapper who provided us with these unorthodox spy shots, this morbid hunk of a test car is actually an Audi RS8. We’ll leave the brief telling of this sob story to Hans: “With just hours to go on the last test day, the worst thing happened to the Audi test team. Just coming into the part Brünnchen at the Nürburgring, this million euro expensive Audi RS8 prototype caught fire and burned up totally. There is not much left of this super fast super car with a V10 engine. The only thing revealing that it was the RS8 are the wheels and the mid-engine layout… (Click through to the jump for more details and shots of this tragedy) …The…

Surprise: VW Phaeton to return to U.S. market Volkswagen intends to reintroduce its Phaeton luxury sedan to the U.S. market, according to VW of America spokesman Andreas Meurer. Mr. Meurer made the announcement during an interview with Bloomberg. Adrian Hallmark, the company's Executive Vice President, said VW expects its U.S. operations to break even in 2009. He said sales in 2007 would be flat, while the company focuses on preparing new models for 2008 and 2009. Volkswagen pulled the Phaeton from the U.S. market in late 2005 due to poor sales. It's unclear when the Phaeton will return to America. Meurer said it would be reintroduced when the next version goes on sale…

The recall involves several vehicles: 1999-2006 model years of the Golf and GTI, 2001-2005 Jettas, 2001-2007 New Beetles and the 2004 R32. Courtesy of Motor Trend -Mike Connor. (The) Latest rumours converning Ferdinand Piech, Porsche, and Volkswagen Group is that Porsche is trying to separate Audi AG from VW, so it can buy the Audi unit outright. Insiders also say VW board meetings have become much more rambunctious now that Porsche boss Wendelin Wiedeking is a regular visitor to Wolfsburg. Wiedeking has been vocal in his criticism of loss-making Bugatti (the Veyron will reportedly struggle to reach its sales target of 300 vehicles) and wants to turn it into a coachbuilding company making just 20 to 30 handbuilt vehicles a year. For a more complete, interesting, and hopelessly confusing view of Volkswagen …

VW Going Hybrid Volkswagen may have come a long way since the original Beetle, but in at least one way it still is very much the People's Car, giving the market their own versions of some of the most popular trends in the industry. Despite their pioneering the Microbus decades earlier, Volkswagen managed to skip the minivan craze, but has jumped on the biggest ones since. With the Touareg, VW joined the SUV boom. With the Eos, it got on the coupe-cabrio elevator closer to ground floor. The next big thing is hybrids, and Wolfsburg's not about to be left holding their hats. To that effect, Volkswagen is tipped to release a hybrid Jetta in two years. Autoblog

Possible Porsche Power Play Pending? Porsche AG, the most valuable and most profitable of Germany's automakers, says it has been increasing its stake in Volkswagen AG to prevent hostile takeovers from abroad. Analysts think Porsche may be gearing up for a takeover of its own. The maker of the 911, the Boxster and the Cayenne SUV said this week it would purchase enough shares in VW to bring its stake to 29.9 percent -- just shy of the 30 percent level that would necessitate a full takeover bid. Porsche -- controlled by the family of VW Chairman Ferdinand Piech -- is now the top shareholder in Europe's largest car maker. While Porsche CEO Wendelin Wiedeking said the …

Volkwagen's Direct Shift Gearbox/S-Tronic twin clutch gearbox has been fairly canonized by all who have mashed its paddles. And now, the automaker's product chief Wolfgang Bernhard is suggesting that the gearbox will replace all of its conventional automatics in much of the VW kingdom shortly, including transverse-mount Audis, Skodas, Seats, and VWs. Apparently, VW is having a issues dealing with longitudinal applications at the moment. Bernhard also allowed that the VW has no plans to license the technology, preferring to keep the transmission for itself. Link

It's a good read... RUMBLE SEAT/DAN NEIL Requiem for a heavyweight Volkswagen pulls its fine-tuned Phaeton from the U.S., where performance is important but badge image is everything. Really, it never had a chance. DAN NEIL April 26, 2006 THE sun-scrubbed desert between Los Angeles and Las Vegas scrolls by with an empty whisper, a high-def silent movie panning past double-thick acoustic windows. East of Barstow, the Volkswagen Phaeton W12 is running at speeds best reserved for those with diplomatic immunity, and yet the big dreadnaught — with a 12-cylinder, 444-hp butter churn under the hood — is eerily unstrained, purring along in top gear, levitated on the four-co…

RAV4 Fighter Geneva concept previews VW's upcoming small SUV By GREG KABLE AutoWeek | Published 02/16/06, 3:06 pm et Volkswagen is getting adventurous. The Concept A, making its public debut at the Geneva motor show later this month, is a precursor to VW’s all-new compact four-wheel drive SUV, planned to launch in the United States in 2008. Billed as a four-door coupe with go-anywhere capability, the production version of the one-off show car will be less flamboyant in production form. Still, now that Wolfgang Bernard is calling the shots in Wolfsburg, the small SUV is crucial to VW’s efforts to give its North American sales a desperately needed boost. Like t…

Audi A1: Audi Bringing a Mini-killer? We found some sources saying that Audi will bring a Mini killer in 2010 which will be the official successor of the Audi A2, but now called Audi A1. The current issue of German "Autobild" has this story as a main topic including the first pics ever. Being currently in Japan we couldn't get our hands on a copy of it, so we had to rely on some pics from an AutoWeek forum. Make your own mind if it looks reliable. To be honest, we don't hope and think so. Stay tuned for more news! The Audi A1 is said to arrive with 3 doors, 4 seats, in compact size and with the new twincharger engines. Diesel engines will also be available. It seems …

November 28, 2005 First Drive: 2007 Bugatti Veyron Review and photos by Michael La Fave Canadian Driver For 47 years, Bugatti built race, touring and luxury cars that were, and still are, thought by many to be the finest automobiles of their time. Almost 35 years later, the company re-surfaced under Romano Artioli, a wealthy Italian car distributor who had acquired the rights to Bugatti's famous name, and the hallowed marque set out once again to build the most amazing cars in the world. …

I got the chance to borrow an '06 Passat with the new 280hp V6 for a couple of days and have a few comments about it..... I really like the new Passat...! The car I'm driving has an MSRP of $36,400 and is the V6 with leather, navigation, 6-speed auto, and the DynAudio sound system. This is one hell of a classy feeling and driving car. When taken in isolation, it feels worth every bit of its $36K price tag. On the other hand, there's lots to choose from out there in that price range. The car handles better than the old Passat and has a firmer feel to the chassis and suspension. The car looks good on the bigger 17-inch wheels and tires. T…
