Flat Tire: Goodyear Workers Go on Strike Some 15,000 members of the United Steelworkers went on strike at 16 Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. plants in the United States and Canada Thursday after the union rejected the company's latest contract proposal. The union terminated its contract at 1 p.m. ET Thursday, saying that it could not allow additional plant closures after it helped keep the company afloat through cost-saving measures three years ago. "The company left us with no option," Steelworkers union executive vice president Ron Hoover said in a prepared statement. "We cannot allow additional plant closures after the sacrifices we made three years ago to help th…

Very thorough site with breakdown percentages my manufacturer. Link On the very first link on the page, they show you fleet percentages for certain cars. Here are some surprising ones. Chrysler Sebring - 72.4% fleet! Dodge Stratus - 72.2% fleet Chevy Impala - 62% fleet Kia Amanti - 64.7% fleet Pontiac Grand Prix - 52.2% fleet Here's a breakdown by manufacturer of some of the largest fleeted cars. GM was easily the worst...the Impala and Malibu percentages are disappointing. They didn't have any Cobalt figures. Ford had high percentages on the obvious ones like the Crown Vic and Taurus, but they're doing a good job keeping the new cars out of fleets. …

I'm copying this straight from the thread in BON to save time, but it appears GM had the greatest fleet sale marketshare drop (7.66% points) and Toyota had the largest gain (2.06% points). Nissan increased and is almost poised to surpass Ford, which actually decreased its fleet share by 1.4%.

Here's the link: http://www.automobilemag.com/reviews/driven/1508-2016-lincoln-mkx-review/ ...and here's a few quotes I thought were kinda interesting in light of the discussion we're having elsewhere about luxury: "The 2016 Lincoln MKX checks all the mid-size, two-row luxury crossover boxes and is better than the standard-bearer that launched this segment, the Lexus RX. But it’s a Lincoln, which means it will take a great deal of heavy-duty marketing to convince the average consumer that the Lincoln MKX is more than an extra trim level above the Ford Edge Titanium." Harry Stoffer Automotive News April 21, 2008 - 4:25 pm ET WASHINGTON -- The Bush administration apparently will try to spruce up its battered environmental image with an Earth Day announcement of higher fuel economy standards. Although there was no confirmation as of this afternoon, administration officials on Tuesday, April 22, are expected to reveal proposed fuel economy standards for cars and trucks in the 2011-15 model years. The Department of Transportation said Secretary Mary Peters will make an announcement on " protecting the environment." Federal law dictates that standards must rise to a combined 35 mpg by 2020, about 40 percent higher than today.…

Ford Motor Co. says it is dropping its plan to build a $1.6-billion US plant in Mexico, a plan criticized by Donald Trump during last year's presidential primary campaign. Ford also announced it plans to invest about $700 million in a Michigan factory that will build high-tech autonomous and electric vehicles. The company said it will add 700 direct new jobs at its Flat Rock (Michigan) Assembly Plant, which will build a small sport utility vehicle with extended battery range, a fully autonomous vehicle for ride-hailing or ride-sharing, and the Ford Mustang and Lincoln Continental.\ Link

Ford has gained a big advantage in one of the most competitive segments in the auto industry. The company's F-150 SuperCab was the only one of nine pickup trucks tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety to earn a "good" rating on an influential new crash test. "Ford is leading the way among large pickup manufacturers when it comes to protecting people in a range of crashes and offering technology to warn drivers of imminent frontal crashes," said Raul Arbelaez, vice president of the IIHS Veh…

And boy does this thing seem spicy- C&D MT Carfection via Jalopnik I have to say, I never disliked this thing in the first place, but I'm really starting to come around to it. It seems Ford really did make a racecar for the road, and I give them major props for that. In that light, I don't think the fact that it's a turbo V6 rather than a V8, V10, or V12 counts as much as a demerit. If you want a focused track weapon, this thing seems to offer more than even the big names across the pond has available. Bravo, Ford.

Despite the fact that Ford has yet to request any special funding from either the federal governments in the United States or abroad, the automaker has repeatedly said that it supports its competitors as they seek financial aid. According to Ford of Europe CEO John Fleming, "We have no objections to competitors asking governments for support in these very difficult times." While some might think that Ford would stand to benefit if its largest competitor went the way of the Dodo, in reality, it's much more complicated than that. Says Fleming, "I would rather take sales from competitors by having better products rather than them going out of business." Plus, there's the s…

DETROIT – Unionized workers at Ford Motor Co. have approved contract changes that include freezing wages and cutting benefits in a move aimed at helping the automaker remain competitive. The United Auto Workers said Monday a majority of hourly workers voted in favor of modifications to the 2007 contract with Ford, eliminating cost-of-living increases and cash bonuses. The agreement is expected to be a model for Chrysler LLC and General Motors Corp., which need to bring their labor costs in line with those of foreign auto companies' plants in the U.S. as a condition for the $17.4 billion they have received in federal loans so far. Under terms of their loan agreements, pr…

Nov 28 (Reuters) - France wants to gradually phase out the use of diesel fuel for private passenger transport and will put in place a system to identify the most polluting vehicles, Prime Minister Manuel Valls said on Friday. Next year, the government will launch a car identification system that will rank vehicles by the amount of pollution they emit, Valls said in a speech. This will make it possible for local authorities to limit city access for the dirtiest cars. "In France, we have long favoured the diesel engine. This was a mistake, and we will progressively undo that, intelligently and pragmatically," Valls said. About 80 percent of French motorists drive die…

Fuel Economy Has Returned As a Marketing Tool

As consumers brace for another round of gasoline-price increases after Hurricane Rita, car makers are rediscovering fuel economy as a marketing tool. Last week, General Motors Corp. previewed a line of large SUVs due out next year and emphasized improvements in gas mileage as much as their vast interior space and sleek new designs. GM has also focused on fuel economy in its "Only GM" ad campaign, which since February has been running in newspapers, on network TV and other media. In the ads, GM touts the "20 that get 30," meaning 20 of its models get at least 30 miles per gallon, including the Chevy Cobalt and the Pontiac G6. "We wanted peopl…

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061017/ap_on_bi_ge/fuel_economy "Next year's list will likely show a decline in gas-mileage numbers. The EPA is revising the way it estimates how far a vehicle will travel on a gallon of gas to take into account high-speed driving, use of air conditioning and rapid acceleration. Under the proposed testing changes, fuel economy stickers would show most 2008 models getting 10 percent to 20 percent less gas mileage in city driving and 5 percent to 15 percent less in highway use. Hybrid buyers will find a greater sticker shock. Hybrid ratings for city driving are expected to drop an average of 20 percent to 30 percent."

The U.S. government in 1975 created CAFE and since that time the push was to make new auto's more fuel efficient. The auto industry has always balked at it but has also always delivered. With that we have seen some interesting trends happen. In 1987 the average auto weighed 3,221 lbs and had 118 horsepower were as in 2008 the weight had increased by 25% and the horsepower had doubled. 2009 is the most current year for full records and that shows that new auto's achieved 22.4 MPG. With a strong economy we are also seeing people leave their efficient cars and move to trucks / suv's so this could really change again. To quote the story of other interesting facts: …

The next major development in the hybrid space is expected in 2010, when GM’s Chevy Volt, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, is expected to go into production. The vehicle can charge off a common household outlet. By Roland Jones Associate editor MSNBC Time was when hybrid gas-electric vehicles appealed only to the greenest car consumers more concerned about saving the environment than saving on gasoline bills. Gas prices hitting $4 a gallon have changed all that. Now there’s an out-and-out stampede to buy hybrid vehicles, as drivers downscale from large SUVs to smaller, more fuel-efficient cars. The advanced fuel cell could eliminate range anxiety and make electric cars more practical, while keeping carbon-dioxide emissions low. If you want to take an electric car on a long drive, you need a gas-powered generator, like the one in the Chevrolet Volt, to extend its range. The problem is that when it's running on the generator, it's no more efficient than a conventional car. In fact, it's even less efficient, because it has a heavy battery pack to lug around. Now researchers at the University of Maryland have made a fuel cell that could provide a far more efficient alternative to a gasoline generator. Like all fuel cells, it generates electricity through a chemica…

"Electric vehicles have long been hailed as a cleaner alternative to gas- and diesel-powered vehicles, but a group of German scientists claim EVs are actually worse for the environment than their fossil fuel-burning counterparts. In their study, titled, "Electric Vehicles are not a Panacea for Climate Change,” German scientists Christoph Buchal, Hans-Dieter Karl and Hans-Werner Sinn claim that electric vehicles are responsible for 11-28 percent more CO2 emissions than their diesel-powered counterparts. The scientists' findings are based on the entire EV production process, as well as Germany's current energy mix." LeftLaneNews

GM - Saturn - Penske deal is DEAD! Today we learned that Penske Automotive Group (PAG) has decided to terminate discussions with General Motors to acquire Saturn. This is very disappointing news and comes after months of hard work by hundreds of dedicated employees and Saturn retailers who tried to make the new Saturn a reality. PAG's announcement explained that their decision was not based on interactions with GM or Saturn retailers; rather it was because of the inability to source new products beyond what it had asked GM to build on contract. As a result of PAG's decision, we will be winding down the Saturn brand and dealership network, in accordance with the wind-d…
