If GM ceases to exist, what will your next vehicle be?

Recommended Posts

If it 'had' to be new and GM wasn't building? Ford product most likely, probably Lincoln. Or a European make, BMW, VW/Audi... something like that.

I'd probably stick with a 'gently used' GM though. If GM goes under completely, low mile used GM's will be dirt cheap and could keep me going for more than a few years. ;)

I have to say, in Chapter 7, someone would buy Cadillac and someone would by Chevy.

As long as that someone isn't Toyota, I would probably still buy one of those two..... even if it were Hyundai. I have to begrudgingly admit that their hardware lately has been impressive.

If GM does declare Chapter 7 Bankrupcy, what happens to the inventory that is already on dealer's lots? Does it get sold off to pay GM's creditors? If yes, does it have to be auction-style? Can you imagine the immense size of these auctions, where a specific area in a large city (take Philly for example, they could use the Philadelphia Race Track & Casino) hosts an auction? I wonder if prices would be low, say a $35,000 vehicle selling for $20,000??? BTW, in no way or form do I wish for this to happen. I'm just posting a "what if" scenario.

As for me, if GM declared Chapter 7 and each dealer had to sell off their inventory ASAP to raise cash for GM, I would definitely look into a 2009 GMC Sierra SLE 1500 Crew Cab 4WD or 2009 Pontiac G8 GT Sedan. Then I'll be driving either one for a LONG time. However, if GM closes and I can't get a new GM vehicle, then the wife gets to pick out something new (whatever she wants and we can afford) and I'll take her '08 Pontiac G6 V6 Sedan and drive it for a LONG time.

And what happens to all of the lease contracts (GMAC SmartLease vehicles) still in existance if GM goes belly-up??? Will someone come collect my car in the middle of the night??? :mind-blowing:

Hmmm.... new--Ford (Mustang GT), a Dodge Challenger, a Jeep (another Grand Cherokee), or used Lincolns, Mercedes or BMWs, probably. The GMs I'm most interested in are the CTS, Camaro and G8.

I would probably continue to enjoy the old GM stock.

If my SO insisted on a new car in GM's absence, it would likely be a BMW 6 series coupe. Maybe a big coupe Mercedes. The Challenger would also be on the short list.

To be honest, though, I'm not sure that a GM purchase is in the cards, even if GM survives... as the vehicles GM produces today are less and less desirable. It was a big shock to me to not be able to sit in the front passenger seat of the G8.

Used GM's of course...

But, besides that;

1) Ford or 2) Chrysler...

As far as imports go... I could see myself in a BMW or maybe an Audi... A friend of mine (who wanted a CTS coupe, until they delayed it) just bought a new S5. Very sexy car!!!

Gleefully taking the 50% depreciation hit on ANYTHING new after only a few years is crazy-nuts.

Unless mad disposable cash comes my way- nothing new again.

No GM; I'm over at the Ford dealer. No foreign brands- no appeal to me.

But I'd rather rebuild vintage for far less money than buy new.

Regarding Ford, I would consider a Taurus SHO, Mustang GT, Fusion Sport, Flex, Fiesta when it comes out. I like the MKS but I like the SHO more.

Other Chrysler products besides the Challenger: Charger, Ram, 300C, Wrangler Unlimited, Viper (in my dreams), The next Charger and Grand Cherokee look very promising, I'm on the fence with the 300. Oh if they build he 200C that is next in line right behind the Challenger.

Nissan: 370Z, G35 coupe, GTR (in my dreams) Essence (if they built it, also in my dreams).

Audi: S5

Mazda6

I've had plenty of toys in my lifetime.

So after my new Camaro it would be a restorable '02 Firehawk.

Must be a few of those being held-back with owners waiting for what they feel is the right time to sell.

The younger readers haven't lived through anything like what we're experiencing at the moment.

It has already exceeded my expectations for as bad as I believed it would get.

My Father said it appears grim and his business has dropped off substantially.

He's had to lay off 1 mason and the fellow that does stucco, parging and pointing.

Dad was a child of the last depression.

I believe him when he says it's bad out there.

For what he'd normally have booked going into Spring business is down approximately 1/3 over the peak of 2005-2006.

Good luck to all.

It would have to be Chrysler or Ford because I don't buy a foreign. If the world ends and Ford and Chrysler are gone too, then I guess I become Amish and get a horse. But seriously, I don't see GM going away completely. They will probably go through bankruptcy but they will emerge again and still be around in a smaller form.

I might be buying a used Mini soon. I'm thinking about lowering my monthly payments to something more reasonable. Maybe a used Boxter S just because I have been lusting over something mid-engine since, well as long as I can remember, and a 911 would kill me on insurance. I might drive a few Audis or BMWs before I make my choice though.

yeap, half of my dads crew got laid off last week and starting that week they only work 4 days a week. they are trying to stretch this job out cause nothing is lined up after it.

Title says it all, but if GM should go Chapter 7 and go totally out of business, what vehicle will you buy next? Have you thought about it at all yet?

I do not plan to buy new for at least another 5 years,

but either way I'd buy NEW non-GM in a heartbeat so

long as it was everything I wanted, and I'm picky.

The new Gen.5 Camaro (even with its B-pillar :yuck: )

is certainly a worthy new car, but if GM did not exist,

as much as this would have SHOCKED & ANGERED my

2002 or 1997 self, I'd buy a Mercedes CLK or Dodge

Charger/Challenger or maybe even a Mustang GT.

----

But chances are I'll buy something from the 1960s as

soon as the 'Burb sells.

Those right there are IT for 2009 GM cars w/ a backseat

that I care about, the rest can rot & crush for all I care.

So true.

MAXIMUM reward, minimum co$t.

That blue firewall and windshield header remains, is that a Mustang?

Apparently, a '67-68 Cougar...there is also the floorpans and rear tail panel...the rear part of the roof, rear quarters, etc dissapeared. Strange.

I just built my "own" Soul, an ! in Java with tan/black houndstooth. Those things are wicked equipped for the price, $17.6k and it comes with sunroof, foglamps and high-powered sound system. It's a Scion with more Seoul for ppl who would rather walk than buy a Toyota. Only thing wrong wif it is a tiny motor.

I'd rock that Galaxie. There is a Galaxie sedan up the street from my sister's house that has been completely neglected. The windshield and passenger front window are broken, but other than some surface rust the body looks straight. The interior is likely shot as a result of not being protected. Bastards.

I like that..

I like that Galaxie...always liked the '69-70 Sportsroof tunneled rear window...that car looks restorable...ditch those late '70s mags for a set of Magnum 500s, redo the interior, etc..

Knew it had to be a Mustang or Cougar, with those shock towers, narrow engine compartment and just the shape of the windshield opening. Why on earth would anyone buy that.

at one time in ist life the ebay listing says that it was a 67 cougar XR7... what a terrible fate to befall a special vehicle $30 prolly isnt what the scrap yard would give you for the metal.

If GM goes the way of the dodo (I hope it doesn't), then I will defect to Ford.

The new Taurus SHO is nice, and I like the look of the F-150 this year, too. Fusion hybrid looks promising too.

After some thinking, here's an update:

1. Another MINI (question is: 3-door or Crossman?)

2. Alfa-Romeo Mi.To

3. Citroën DS3 (it looks like it will be a good alternative if it doesn't lose much from concept to production)

If Saab survives and my economic situation improves, a 9-1 or a 9-3 hatch. But the way I see Saab going, this is an option that belongs to www.not-going-to-happen.com
