Rolling down the freeway this morning, right around sunrise, I see a white Impala 6-8 car lengths ahead of me, in my lane. As I get closer, I notice it seems oddly narrow. Then I get closer, and notice it's missing the gold bowtie, but has a blue emblem instead. A blue oval. D'oh. Turns out to be a current gen Focus sedan. Anyone else have a moment like this, confuse two different, unrelated models that up close really seem to be nothing alike, but from a distance.... similar taillights, decklid, fascia..

I have a mental disorder. I buy cars compulsively, especially after spotting a good deal. It's essentially a crime not to buy if it's a good deal, right? Riiiight?! My current two vehicles fall under that category. The Golf was a $500 investment to get back into the VW fold. I had the Cobalt at the time and had no real reason to buy it... but I did. Okay, I want to know what these orange-reflective colored poles are called. They're usually steel, but I've seen some that are plastic (I'm more interested in the steel ones). The reason? My Homeowners Association meeting is coming up in two weeks. I thought I would see if this is a common practice at other dealers as well. When we were test driving vehicles, the Chevy/Cadillac dealer (and no one else) put a "protection package" on every single new vehicle they had. The package was basically some sort of scotch guard type application done to the interior, nitrogen in the tires, and the windows were etched with the VIN or whatever it is they do. Anyways, this package is $599, and it's on every f@#king vehicle. Really annoying to see a $20,800 Cruze bumped to $21,399, or even worse on an Cruze LS or Aveo. While helping a friend look for a new car I made sure to hope over to Consumer Guide for their comments and ratings. I was surprised by the car not getting a "Best Buy" rating because the score was so high. Upon closer review I found: 1. The Chevrolet Cruze showed an average of 29.2 mpg during the test cycle which gave it a score of 6, whereas the honda civic, which got 26.1 to 28.5 mpg, got a 7-8, and the mazda mazda3 which averaged 19.6 to 30.7 mpg got a 5-8. 2. So you may or may not have heard that my brother was in a car accident and the Maxx was totaled. Caught part of a promo for the U.S. Top Gear latest episode- looks to up The Bar on Staggeringly Stupid. I saw a Roadmaster wagon filled with water, driving & dripping, and a Fiero intentionally rear-ending a circa '70 Cutlass. I struggle to imagine how they're going to top undercut this feat. Well, I guess I do now. With the Cobalt now done, I can enjoy being payment free....or maybe not. As I found out, there is going to be some kids in the family (adopted and born) on the wife's side. Since we all tend to help each other out (what family doesn't), this is calling for a bigger something. Her Cavalier is simply not going to cut it. Something came up today that, if it pans out, would mean a big change for me. Unfortunately, it would also mean an unpleasant commute inside the city limits of Philadelphia every day. I hate cities, but this could be worth the aggravation. So, I'm thinking that my Tahoe isn't the right beast for such a commute (should this happen). Pushing 200k and at 15 years old, asking it to do a high-traffic, 40 mile slog everyday doesn't seem advisible. It is very early to be thinking about this, but should it happen, a change will need to be made for daily driver purposes. I'm thinking small 4x4 pickup. But I'm not married to that idea in any way. Honestly, at almost 36 (12/23), there's not much I want that we can afford (for example, I'd love new tires and rims and the GM accessories chrome & painted door handles for my '06 Envoy, but can't afford them). Top 10 recently canceled vehicles that should be brought back. We're going to get a poll going on this, but first we need some candidate submissions. That is apparently the lifespan of brake pads on a manual Cobalt when driven by me. Screech pads weren't hit yet either, they were just found to be thin upon inspection. This car has treated me quite well for the 200,000 so far... ps. Who has the highest mileage car on this board? I know I'm not up there yet, but I'm just curious.

The last month has been intense at work...pushing hard to meet deadlines...had the quarterly production install Friday night (pulled an all nighter that night). It's been exhausting, 4 60+ hr weeks in a row...and I don't see it letting up soon, as we are chronically understaffed--the department has lost a net of 6 people in the last 6 months, but the upcoming quarters still have a lot of work to be done, and they seem to be under a hiring freeze (cheap bastards, considering they are one of the few big banks that's profitable). With the Cobalt's last payment nearing soon....I've been doing the usually "eyeballing" of cars... So my brother was on his way to school and someone ran a stop sign. The Maxx is likely totaled, and an estimate of $10-11K is probably what it is worth. We don't get the official word until Monday, however. So, what newer (preferably 2006 or newer) are available in the $10-12K price range? We have also looked at possibly just giving my brother my mom's Trailblazer and using the money from the Maxx to buy her a new car; we went test driving quite a few cars yesterday. Anyone have any ideas here? He doesn't want a truck or SUV unless he's forced to take the Trailblazer.

No. Despite pre-ordering it back in the beginning of August, Newegg can do no better than tell me the Collector's Edition I ordered is out of stock. So for the second time in six months my Impala has been the victim of the CURSE. My car was parked in front of a friend's house last night when some dough head in a big GMC Sierra 2500 decided to do a 3-point turn and backed right into my car's left front fender. The upshot is that at the least, the fender is f@#ked in every way imaginable. Driving with a learners permit and didn't even feel the impact. Also the bumper probably needs to be replaced too since the little mounting holes for the wheel well liner are completely torn and deformed. To do high speed rail...we would need to fund the system adequately. A recent estimate for a line between Milwaukee and Madison was $810 million....and that rate per mile...it would cost about eight or ten billion dollars just to put a basic system into Ohio. Not that I would mind spending the money...I'd spend it here rather than on another carrier group we are never going to use. But we can''t just cough up 7 and a half billion dollars out of an already short Ohio treasury to do so. Want to see what happens with the high speed trains on the coasts as this will get interesting.
