"It's expected that the ZL1 will ditch the current supercharged 6.2-liter LSA V-8 in favor of the new supercharged 6.2-liter LT4 V-8 engine used in the [CTS-V and Z06]. We don't know what the power output will be, but we expect it to surpass the current model's 580 hp... the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 will make its debut next year, likely at the 2016 Detroit auto show. Production should begin later that year." Here's the link: http://m.motortrend.com/wot/spied_2017_chevrolet_camaro_zl1_muscles_its_way_around_the_ring.html

http://www.forbesautos.com/news/headlines/...autoturkey.html Automotive Turkeys 2005 by Dan Lienert Forbes.com NEW YORK — The word "turkey" is like the word "lemon," appealing if you're sitting down to dinner, troubling if you're talking about investments. Bankers and theater producers call failures "turkeys," and each year Forbes.com applies the term to cars as well. We do this, naturally, around Thanksgiving. The 10 vehicles in the slide show that follows are the ones that have seen the biggest declines in sales in the American market in the first 10 months of 2005, compared with the first 10 months of 2004. …

Tuesday, September 26, 2006 World War II created health insurance perk Ron French / The Detroit News The fact that GM pays anything for health care is an accident of history. By the 1940s, health care costs in most industrialized nations were paid by the government. That might have happened in the United States, too, if not for World War II. To halt inflation during the war, the government put a cap on wage raises. To compensate workers, companies began offering health insurance. By the time the cap on raises was lifted, health insurance had become a common perk to attract and retain workers. In 1950, GM President Charles Wilson offered to pay 50 percent o…

The gist of it appears to be that the only way to neuter the righteous 5.0 Cummins is to overwhelm it with flab, which at 7200-plus pounds is precisely what Nissan did. Anyhoo, here's the link: http://m.caranddriver.com/reviews/2016-nissan-titan-xd-test-review

I don't remember this being posted before, but it appears to be a good reference source for the current status of North American manufacturing plants (only saw a few mistakes that I know of... such as Lansing Grand River opened in 2001, not 1990.) Automotive Manufacturing Solutions July/Aug 2006 I'm glad to see that there hasn't been a closing announcement made for Hamtramck yet. The PAAS implementation caught my eye. A comment from this article caused me to wonder what is Hamtramck's true product capacity now with PAAS? Another question is 'why would GM update Hamtramck with no new products planned as mentioned in this recent article (June'06)?' ...future expan…

"Yep, 55 grand. Why lead this review with a price breakdown? Because it underscores the point we’ve made about the MKZ all along, which is that it doesn’t offer a whole lot more than the Ford Fusion with which it shared its mechanicals—all but one of the powertrains and even the infotainment setups are identical—yet it is far more expensive. Indeed, this particular MKZ is nearly as expensive as possible, which makes its shortcomings stand out even more." "Particularly egregious is something endemic to all MKZ hybrids, regardless of price: the sound of the Atkinson-cycle 2.0-liter four-cylinder/CVT combo, which drones miserably under acceleration... we averaged a ho-hum-…

"Every EcoBoost-powered Ford that we’ve tested, Mustang or otherwise, has either delivered decent fuel economy or served up great power-but never both simultaneously. The EcoBoost installed in the droptop Mustang delivers neither, being both the slowest 2015 Mustang we’ve tested while also not being particularly efficient." "A last-generation Mustang V-6 convertible we rented outran this EcoBoost... the Mustang driver will need the turbo’s racket to mask his or her whimpering shame when Volkswagen GTIs and Honda Accord V-6s display their taillights in stoplight drag races." "You could forgo the EcoBoost for the V-6, but Ford rigs that ballot: The cheaper V-6 Mustangs ar…

It was a Big Horn with the 5 1/2 foot bed and 3:92 rear end, so the driveline was identical to mine. Some quotes: "Ram announced late last year that 20 percent of all 1500 pickup production capacity—fully twice the projected figure—was dedicated to the EcoDiesel, and it remains higher than 15 percent. That statement should come as little surprise, as diesels typically offer two things truck buyers covet: torque and efficiency" "Rated to tow an SAE J2807-certified 8560 pounds, the EcoDiesel bests an equivalent 1500 3.6-liter, which is rated for 7180 pounds." "While these numbers accurately reflect capability, it’s easy to lend too much credence to paper victories when c…

"Full disclosure: I love Shelbys. I've owned, driven, and raced them for years. I wanted to love this Shelby and its numbers. Unfortunately, that didn't happen." "The Super Snake is definitely a fast car. The numbers it laid down at our test track are strong by any measure. Problem is, they should have been better. A stock Camaro ZL1 is quicker... the car's 12.3-second, 116-mph quarter-mile run speaks to a horsepower number far less than 750, let alone 850. Confused? So were we. Consider the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, with its SAE-certified 707 hp and a curb weight 627 pounds above the Shelby's. The last Hellcat we tested did a 12.0-second quarter-mile at 124.8 mph-en…

I was just reading a review of the refreshed Lacrosse, and the author made a surprising point that I hadn't considered. Personally, I disliked the Buick commercials with their dorky music and over-sold punchline: "That's too nice and stylish, it can't be a Buick." But I'm an enthusiast, I already know about cars, I'm not the audience they want. What if that message rang loud and clear with their target demo? What if people--who didn't know Buick still existed--suddenly realized the brand had evolved back into slick luxury cars, cars worth cross shopping? Maybe it's such a simple concept that it's genius. Here's an excerpt from the link: "Everywhere I went in t…

"I'm already convinced Chevy has pulled ahead [of the Mustang]. True, the 2016 Mustang GT350R just won our Road & Track Performance Car of the Year testing, so we'll have to wait and see how the Z28 stands up when it arrives. But in terms of the overall package, there's more to consider than just performance." "Not too long ago, I had a new Mustang for another lengthy road trip. At one point, outside of Pittsburgh, a last-gen Camaro SS pulled up next to me and the driver revved his engine. I looked over and just smiled. I didn't take the bait... but as he sped off, I took solace in the fact that I was in the better overall car. Not anymore." Read more at the link…

found on DIGG.COM i'm guessing this means how long it would take to drill up, "ship", refine, and ship again and then come out of the pump, an average gallon across the country, based on some determined wage...? or is it just how long you have to drive, wait in a line, pay, and pump the gas? so if trends continue, it maybe a few years, of this, then prolly drop off again. first drop took ~20 years, second ~ 7 yrs, the next may take something closer ~5yrs? prolly some math formula could make a decent prediction (if it does drop off)... hard to say what the site's (leftbusinessobserver.com), this came from, at a glance, purpose is... take it as you will. this in…

*UPDATED* White House Drops CAFE Standard To 54.5 MPG William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com July 27, 2011 After weeks of intense negotiations between the US Government and automakers, the Obama administration has announced a slight reduction in their proposed CAFE standard. The new proposal calls for a 54.5 MPG average for an automaker's fleet by 2025. Passenger cars will see a efficiency hike of 5% annually from 2017-2025 to meet the standard, while light trucks will have a efficiency hike of 3.5% annually from 2017-2021 then hiked up to 5% from 2022-2025. Regulations for heavier duty “work trucks” and other vehicles are still being worked…

The nearly $5 billion dollar NEVI program is to help states create a network of EV charging stations along the Interstate Highway System. The total amount available under Fiscal Year 2022 is $615 million and states must submit an EV Infrastructure Deployment Plan before access is given to the funds. A second, competitive grant program will be announced later this year with the details on how additional funding can be accessed with a focus on increasing EV charging access throughout the country that is focused on rural and underserved communities. 1.4L Still on Track for Volt and Cruze Yesterday it was reported that construction of GM's new Flint engine plant had been canceled, and with it the prospects of US built 1.4L engines for the Volt and Cruze. GM has since stated that while the construction contracts have been canceled, the engines are still on track to be built here. However, they are looking at various options, such as building the new engines in an existing plant. Since they have the extra capacity, the engines will be built in Europe until US production is ready. Follow the jump to learn more. http://www.cheersandgears.com/index.php?showtopic=27961

Can these people really be so dumb? Car and Driver Perhaps the most frightening aspect of the automotive crisis is not so much the specter of impending financial doom, overcrowded bread lines, or the end of Automotive Life As We Know It. No, it’s the up-close and too-personal look at the men and women who run our country, and, by extension, at some members of the mainstream media who report stories now and ask questions later, if at all. Public-spirited citizens that we are, let us detail for you 10 lies that pinhead legislators—and, by extension, the mainstream media—believe about the car industry. Lie 1: American companies don’t sell fuel-efficient cars. Trut…

Jeff Dahn and the team at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada signed a partnership with Tesla in 2016 to be part of the created Tesla Advanced Battery Research division. As a leader in the earliest research into Lithium-ion batteries the Jeff Dahn team had a 5-year partnership with the express focus or primary goal of making batteries last longer with increased energy density, decreased costs at the top of the wish list by Tesla. This team created multiple patents and papers related to Tesla Battery cells and with this came the first talk by Tesla and the researchers of the million-mile battery pack. So in cruising the alternative world I found on the Green Car reports two stories about Ford having an 11 speed transmission which they have filed a patent for; http://www.greencarreports.com/news/1097339_ford-patent-for-11-speed-automatic-transmission-wars-escalate Fiat having a 40 mpg 500 with 11 speed transmission; http://www.greencarreports.com/news/1097766_electric-car-battery-costs-40-mpg-surprise-11-speed-automatic-todays-car-news So with battery cost falling and the transmission war kicking in. Al Oppenheiser finally states what many of us have suspected: a Camaro SS variant will suffice to take down a Shelby Mustang. "During our time to chat with Al Oppenheiser, chief Camaro engineer, we got right down to business and asked what everyone wants to know: will the 2017 Camaro SS 1LE outperform the Shelby GT350? "'That’s obviously our intent. I have the answer, but I’ll let the rest of you decide how we did. Our goal is to up the game with our competitor, just like they upped the game with the GT350. Everyone had to expect we would punch back. I will tell you this car is three seconds faster than the previous 1LE. Your readers can go out and make their own conc…

2010 Chicago Auto Show Coverage The 2010 Chicago Auto Show wasn't all that impressive this year with very few vehicle introductions. Nissan/Infiniti decided to show up even though they were absent from Detroit. They didn't bring anything new and they got stuffed in a remote back corner behind Mitsubishi, Land Rover, and Jaguar. Chrysler re-used their exact same displays from Detroit, which is fine because they're actually pretty classy. Any speaker for Toyota couldn't make it more than 4 sentences without stressing how much their customers' safety mattered to them. They even went so far as to stress that the new, not even in production yet, Toyota Avalon wouldn't be b…

G. David Felt - Editorial Staff Writer Alternative Energy - CheersandGears.com 2012 Insurance Industry Top 25 Vehicles stolen This week the insurance industry released their top 25 stolen vehicles list for 2012. Interesting is only one consistent truck made the list, but two motorcycles made the list this year in addition to one very popular V6 / V8 4 door sedan. What I found interesting is the sheer amount of what I call boring cars that people seem to steal over and over. Question to you all: Are these auto's just the easiest to steal or is there another reason that you can think of as to why these mass produced yawners keep getting stolen? 2009 Nissan Altima - # …

Need anymore be said about the performance of the new Camaro? This sums it up nicely, "Hats off once again to Camaro boss Al Oppenheiser and his team. They took on Germany’s performance standard-bearer, objectively tied it, and subjectively blackened the M4’s eye." I have said this before, but the new Camaro just continues to impress me. This pretty much said it all for me. "After two days driving over the relief left behind by the Great Buzzard, there's no doubt the Camaro, with its Cadillac platform and Corvette engine, is the thoroughbred of its class. We can't believe it. The Camaro is almost too composed. The balance is sublime. It's refined and exciting. Has this once fat lout of a car become a bona fide sports car. Did that just happen? It happened." http://www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars/reviews/a27655/2016-chevrolet-camaro-ss-vs-2016-ford-mustang-gt/

12 Top Contenders, Only 1 Winner Our 2016 Best Driver’s Car competition is the most competitive in the award’s nine-year history. This year, 12 automakers sent their best sports cars, supercars, and ponycars our way for a week of incredibly vigorous testing. In fact, if you’ll allow us to brag for a moment, we had so many contenders that we had to institute a one-car-per-manufacturer rule for this competition—more on that in a sec. This year, we had 6,484 horsepower worth of cars competing to earn our Best Driver’s Car title. This $1.8 million field of carbon fiber, aluminum, and steel is particularly special because it represents almost every major auto-…

For 2016, the Chevy SS and Holden Commodore get a last hurrah before ending production after the 2017 MY. The refresh includes a revised front clip, allegedly functional hood vents, a retuned LS3 with tweaked power figures, the quad-tipped dual mode exhaust that was so popular on the Camaro, new wheels, and a new color you can see above. IMO, the tweaks are welcome. The new bumper integrates the lower grille design much better and the new wheels are leaps and bounds more attractive than the out-of-place chromes that sold with the car thus far. It makes the car look about 5 years newer to my eyes. http://gmauthority.com/blog/2015/09/2016-chevrolet-ss-revealed-with-…

Flogging these pickup trucks off-road wasn't our only consideration when picking the 2017 Monster Factory Off-Road Challenge winner. Each truck racked up points through rigorous evaluations in a number of subjective categories that included judges' scores in interior quality, versatility, value and more. Points also were awarded for measured testing of acceleration and braking and various truck-centric capabilities, including payload and gross vehicle weight ratings. The winner was perhaps a bit lopsided in off-road chops and leaned so far in that direction that its shortcomings in other areas weren't serious enough to keep it off the top of the podium. Here's how th…

Taking a look at the mid year of 2018, here is the numbers and where they stand for recalls, usually this list is published by Alphabetical numbers, yet I choose to grab it and sort by lowest to highest which I think gives a much better view of who is improving in quality compared to last year. As we stand for this year, we have the bulk numbers as follows: Here are the recalls broken down by brand from lowest to highest. Manufacturer Number of Cars Recalled YTD Same Period Last Year Year over Year % Porsche Cars North America, Inc. 308 91,585 -100% …

Power The study, now in its 32nd year, measures the number of problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) experienced during the past 12 months by original owners of three-year-old vehicles. A lower score reflects higher dependability, and the study covers 177 specific problems grouped into eight major vehicle categories: audio/communication/entertainment/navigation (ACEN); engine/transmission; exterior; interior; features/controls/displays (FCD); driving experience; heating, ventilation and air conditioning; and seats. Vehicle dependability is at an all-time high, with the overall level of problems cited by owners declin…

Seems we have about 3 million EV auto batteries coming up to be retired from their 10 year run. Where will they go? What will happen to them, in the ground, laying around like old tires, where? According to Bloomberg, seems countries around the world are holding the auto companies responsible for dealing with the batteries and making sure they do not get put into landfills. According to the story, it seems all auto companies are recapturing money by selling these perfectly good batteries for use as storage system from home to commercial applications around the world. Only then after they truly wear out in 20-30 years will the rare earth elements be recaptured to be …

Imagine a car that’s the length of a Smart ForTwo, the width of a Honda Accord, and six inches taller than a Cadillac Escalade. Those are the exterior dimensions of the Mirrow Provocator, a Russian car company design. None are on the road yet, and all you can see on the Mirrow Cars website are graphic representations of many views and permutations of the vehicle. Mirrow’s slogan is “Cars like a mirror of tomorrow.” The company describes the Provocator as a “business car” and says it’s intended for service in the city. It’s designed to park perpendicularly to the curb, preferably backed in, which turns out to be very convenient, as the only full-size door is in the…

ABS, Airbags = False Sense of Security? A Purdue University research team that studied five years of motor vehicle accidents in Washington State concludes antilock brakes and airbags don't minimize accidents or injuries because those systems may encourage more aggressive driving. Fred Mannering, a Purdue professor of civil engineering, led the study. The results, which are bound to be controversial with auto makers and safety experts, say the innovations designed to improve safety also make drivers less vigilant. Cars With the Oldest Buyers October 2, 2014 6:37 am EDT As the U.S. economy continues to recover, domestic car sales for 2014 are projected to come close to an all-time high. But while the auto sales have picked up, especially for luxury brands, older customers are driving much of the growth. Last year, the average American car buyer was almost 52 years old. Some car brands are especially dependent on older buyers. While Land Rover’s average customer was just under 48 years old last year — the youngest average age among car brands reviewed — buyers of luxury brand Lincoln were the oldest in the nation, with an average age of 61 years. Based on a recent report fro…

Aging tires spark new safety concern Michelin, Continental latest to set 10-year limit Scott Burgess / The Detroit News Major U.S. tire manufacturers have a new warning for consumers and dealers: Any tire made before 1996 should be swinging from a tree. Michelin USA and Continental Tire North America Inc. have become the latest manufacturers to issue technical bulletins to dealers calling for the replacement of all tires 10 years or older. Some automakers -- including Ford Motor Co. and DaimlerChrysler AG -- advise owners that tires be replaced after six years. Industry and safety experts agree that most tires are replaced long before any unofficial expiration date.…

NEW YORK (AP) - Major automakers are scheduled Tuesday to report August sales, which some analysts expect to decline because of sluggish consumer spending, higher gasoline prices and weakness in the housing market. Buckingham Research Group analyst Joseph C. Amaturo expects retail sales to come in weak for the third straight month in August, which could pressure auto-related stocks. "Weaker year-over-year retail sales reinforce our concerns about the weaker consumer, in particular, as it relates to high ticket discretionary items," Amaturo wrote in a note to clients. Amaturo expects Ford Motor Co.'s August overall sales to decline at least 10 percent from a year ago…

"That's right: Go on, take your Camaro to the track, the parking lot, the dragstrip. If you miss a shift weaving through the cones and a conrod punches through the hood at 14,000 RPM (unlikely), then you can luxuriate in the fact that you won't need to sell your firstborn for a moment of self-indulgence. But, there's that caveat—you must resist the temptation of adding more horsepower, swapping out parts, and your beautiful ride must remain factory stock. "The policy applies to all track-oriented Camaros: the V8 SS in particular, as well as the ZL1, the forthcoming Z/28, and the 1LE and both of its available engines. The last ZL1 and Z/28 were also track-covered, so th…
