A friend of mine was asked to work for, an by the woman who's car spy business it is. Stickly speaking, only spying on GM's competion of course! I think she likes my equipment, err my friends camera equipment. In this economy it would be nice to have another income too. However I have been thinking I would be more suited working as a condom model. So what's your opinion on my current state of affairs? Inquiring minds want to know???

Check out this TV report on massive cities the Chinese government is building that have no inhabitants: The reason is of course that construction activity boosts the country's GDP figures, even though by any measure this is insane. Be skeptical of China's quoted growth--a lot is illusory.

SEMA Action Network is a non-profit organization that works to promote legislative solutions for classic car owners and members of the hobby. If you are a part of the hobby or just enjoy preserving this part of our history, you should take part and join. It's free and it merely updates you on laws/propositions that either promote or threaten the hobby. I recently agreed to take the SEMA SAN Challenge to try and win the trip to this year's SEMA show. If you join, kindly put my name (Josh Leatherwood) under the "How Did You Hear About Us?" question. My true loyalty lies in passion for the hobby. So even if you don't like me and don't want to put down my name (which, I don…

...that I finally buy something I can play around with and take to shows/cruise nights. I've been looking for years, and always wishing and wanting something to call my own. Whether it is a Pontiac Grand Prix ('80s vintage), a T/A GTA ('91/'92), a GMC (mid-'50s pickup, '91 Syclone, '80s Caballero, fullsize early '90s Jimmy), I am going to make it a personal goal to make this happen. I'm tired of going to car shows and admiring someone else's ride and when they ask what I have, tell them nothing. I have a small gold mine sitiing in my basement (boxes of toys collecting dust), and two online outlets to utilize (Craigs list and eBay), so I have to make this happen for me…

Price was right, pulled the Solstice wheels and added a set of dipped SKY wheels. Not a Turbo I got this thing for under $10K before tax so I took it, wife loves it. Always liked the Solstice alot, it's just the SKY looks so much better. I kinda like owning two orphan brands, maybe I'll look for a clean Oldsmobile next.

My bike has been hanging in my garage since I moved to PA in 2003... unused. It's a Wal-Mart special (shows how old it is, I have boycotted Wal-Mart for years, I think I bought it circa 1998) Pacific Strike 21 speed. It has never been left out in the weather, so it's in great shape. Tires hold air, don't appear too dry or cracked. Butt, it's too high off the ground, and I don't need that many gears. I want to get back into bike riding again, but this time around I am interested in a relaxed riding position and only 3 speeds... a comfort bike that can take on moderate hills. Anyone have any exPIRRience or recommendations? TIA.

I swung by the Kia dealer to take a peak at that new Optima they got. In a word, I was impressed. I'm still wary of the reliability and mechanical bits, but the styling is striking and the interior design and materials are on par with the competition. I didn't test drive it because I'm going to wait til late April to compare it to the new '12 Civic Si sedan and others, but I sat in it and examined the interior material choices. It's definitely on my test drive list now. Must be that new Audi lead designer they nabbed. My main gripe is that the 6MT is ONLY available on the base model with no options or packages (par for the course with these midsize sedans). But on the b…

Let's first say that this is the first non-GM product my family has owned, and the GM dealership where we always take our vehicles gives us very fair prices. Anyways, my brother's Civic had it's first service warning light and code come on this week (I guess all Hondas do this). The code was B12, meaning the car thinks it's time for an oil change, air filter change, cabin air filter change, and tire rotation (plus inspection of whatever). My dad called the Honda dealership to see what the code meant, and then scheduled an appointment. They told him it would be $260 to do everything the car "needed." Now we've only put 3k miles on the car since buying it, and the tires w…

Makes me so angry. :rage: Had a look under the cars the other day. First and foremost, the Prizm. After only four years in NE, winter is taking its toll. The good news is that it looks like the rust is confined to those areas of the rockers and no where else important. Hopefully this year I'll be able to get that fixed (along with the rear quarter). My car only saw a few storms before going into storage. Under body looks pretty good despite living its 204,000 life up here. I would like to take care of what rust is forming though before it gets worse.

What soundcard would you recommend for a 5.1 channel system? It does not matter whether it is PCI or PCI-E. I have read good reviews about Asus Xonar Essence XTX. but also have read that it is geared for headphones and some have experienced problems with 5.1 digital sound. Can a 5.1 channel system be "converted" to a 7.1 by adding two speakers?

Okay, so I haven't checked on my favorite '87 Pontiac Grand Prix LE since the fall (maybe October?). And the dealership it is at - remember, this car is the dealer owner's personal car - lost both its franchises (Pontiac in '09 and Cadillac just recently in late 2010 or very early 2011). The building is now marked as an AC Delco repair facility though it looks emptier than before. I've been curious if his collection of cars was still in existence, namely my favorite Pontiac. So Friday night on the way home I stopped by to do a quick check. I was disappointed to see it missing from its parking spot inside the garage; however, I know the owner takes it out on nice weath…

I'm trying to type this with my left hand since my right wrist is imobilized. Made a rare trip to see a doctor today to confirm the bad news I already thought was coming my way. Right now, I can't do any of the things I usually do to make a living and am supposed to start some harsh physical therapy after "resting" my arm for several weeks. This is not in the budget. Worse, it is spring and my best chance to generate some decent level of income just evaporated. Sometimes things just suck. Sorry for not getting back to you, Olds. Been a bit fixated on this.

One thing that interests me lately about Japanese cars, and culture in general, is their propensity for miniaturization. Our small cars, it seems, are scaled-down big cars, while Japanese cars are engineered in miniature... yet everything seems to work in harmony. Like a Tokyo apartment.

This info (and more) will eventually get into the upcoming C&G Wiki, but this is especially nice because there are numerous pics. Even driving by these sites seldom gives any indication of the size of these complexes. http://canadianponcho.activeboard.com/index.spark?aBID=118110&p=3&topicID=37134625&page=1&sort=newestFirst

Have gas prices already started affecting used SUV/Truck pricing? March 6th 2011 - Drew Dowdell - CheersandGears.com According to GasBuddy.com, the national average for gasoline has spiked from $3.12 per gallon to $3.49 per gallon between February 16th and March 6th. As some of you know, I keep an eye on prices for used Chevrolet Avalanches and Oldsmobile Bravadas. I am already noticing a drop in pricing on just these two models. For example, an '05 Avalanche with 63,000 miles and leather near me has an asking price of just $17,999. Six months ago, an Avalanche with that equipment would be over $20k used. Higher mileage examples have fallen from the $17k range to …

Will be a tough road, but let me tell you, the Kizashi is the real deal, the SX4 has a definite niche. Hoping this pans out, at least for while. Any of you in this neck of the woods coming to the auto show let me know. Will be working the Suzuki stage! Cruze, etc. has nothing on this. Well, somebody bought a new-style STS. Did you guys see the photos of David Arquette's silver STS after the head-on crash in L.A.? The front end's wiped out, but the doors look openable. He went head-on into some sort of Jeep, I think it was a Patriot.

http://www.mainstreetinmotion.com/ For me, it's coming to Philly in July (15-17), 8AM-5PM, at the Citizen's Bank Park (Phillies stadium). I signed up for Saturday 7/16, but will have to go on Sunday 7/17 instead (unless I get "sick" and go Friday 7/15!) due to my daughter's 1st birthday party that day. However, I'm excited GM has returned with this show Check the link above to see if it's coming to a location near you (its travelling all over the US), what vehicles will be there and how to register.

Who's (on) First? It seems there's a minor collective historical shift going on. The Buick Motor Company was incorporated May 19, 1903. The Cadillac Automobile Company was incorporated August 22, 1902. With the demise of Oldsmobile, the previous longest manufacturer in the U.S., Wikipedia (and other) sources have reshuffled the criteria a bit. Wikipedia currently says this in the Cadillac entry : >>"Cadillac is currently the second oldest American automobile manufacturer behind Buick and among the oldest automobile brands in the world. Depending on how one chooses to measure, Cadillac is arguably older than Buick. Since GM has discontinued offering Oldsmobil…

System of a Down will be performing a reunion tour beginning in May. It's about time. This gives me something to be excited about since everything else in my life is depressing at the moment. Not that any of the U.S. shows are close enough to personally attend, but perhaps they'll announce some east coast shows later in the year. Here's to hoping.

Saint Patrick didn't have a decent car, so he moped around with his head hanging down. That's when he spotted a four leaf clover and his luck changed. He got a great deal on a Clover Green Holden Cruze v. 2 while he was on tour in Australia, and the rest is history. SRSLY. March yourself right in here and post your lucky little pots o' gold.

1957 was a great year for cars...Ford outsold Chevrolet, Chevrolet introduced its legendary Bel Air, a few companies introduced fuel-injection to American cars, and Chrysler reached a peak in styling with the Forward Look. Especially nice were the '57 Imperial and De Soto Adventurer convertibles. Check out these two '75s going up for sale soon...the Imperial was even owned by Howard Hughes at one point. What do you think of them? http://automotivetraveler.com/jump/2793

Back in the day, there were "Chevy men", "Dodge men", and "Ford men", with variations on a vast majority domestic theme. How did you become the type of car enthusiast you are today? What cars did you grow up with in your family, and how did they shape your preferences? I'll list some of my memories, both real and placed in my head by grainy photographs taken before my birth or when I was too young to remember... Maternal side, grandparents, '39 Mercury coupe, muddy farm car in photographs. Grandfather later turned to Chrysler cars with a smattering of Pontiacs, his last the '73 Cat he handed to me. His last car after his beloved '77 New Yorker was an '89 Caprice Cla…

to love a Chrysler this was the one Chrysler I would have forsaken a GM for, growing up back in the day. It still looks good to me. 80's yes. Has the same qualities that all the late 70's / early to mid 80's GM cars had to me. Anyone else love the Mirada / Cordoba twins? I would still love to find one of these to drive.....

So I try to set myself goals every years. Some are realistic and I don't quite make it and some are a reach and I actually acomplish them. Either way I like making a list at the beggining of the year and do my best to acomplish it. Here's what I got for 2011... 1. Get a new job with a company that is more organized and pays 25-30 percent more base. 2. Finally finish my undergrad (I did college part time after my freshmen year) 3. Sell my car. 4. Move to Brooklyn 5. Get engaged. What major goals do you guys have for the year?

The auctions are over but unless you were in Scottsdale, you wouldn't know about some of the best cars to cross the block. Is the audience for SpeedTV so focused on Corvettes and Mustangs that they wouldn't even want to see the other vehicles? And what about the other auctions? What do you think? http://automotivetraveler.com/jump/2747

Link: http://deansgarage.com/2011/chuck-jordan-memorial%e2%80%94photos-and-handout/ On topic: pretty cool memorial service for a great man. Plenty of great classic GM vehicles and concepts, surrounded by other great GM people. Off-topic: Okay, who do you have to know to have your memorial service held there? Of course if I'm dead what good does it do (unless I come back for it in ghost form ), but I couldn't think of a better place for my memorial service than the GM Heritage Center. Of course, my favorite picture from the group.

So it appears that my sister could trade in her Alero and get a Cruze LS for about $50 a month. ($900 down, $159 a month for 39 months = $7100). Haggle that $100 off, take off $3500 in GM credits and $1500 or so in trade (that's on the low side) and you're at $2000 for 39 months = $51 a month. However, I don't know what the residual value or money factor (interest rate/2400) are on the Cruze LT leases, which is obviously more desirable. Similarly, for a base Regal (agreed upon selling price of MSRP, $27k) can be had for $249 a month for 39 months, $2000 down. I found a $28.8k model (adds heated seats, sunroof, dual power seats, some other stuff) for $25.5k, so not knowi…

So I live about 2 hours south of Chicago, and today there's an article about the Chicago Auto Show, where they ask 4 or 5 "car people" some questions about which vehicle they'd buy in certain classes. How they picked them I do not know (one of them was a Toyota spokesperson, who of course answered with a Toyota product each time, didn't make much sense). Drew was also in the article, and it mentioned C&G. I can't find the article online or I would post it, but I thought it was pretty cool since it was an article written by an editor of the newspaper, not just some random article they took from somewhere else. EDIT: Here is a picture of the article:

What extinct or endangered body style do you want to see come back? February 13th, 2011 Drew Dowdell - CheersandGears.com Over the years body styles have come and gone. Oh sure, the basic trio of sedan, coupe, wagon are still around, but even those three had subtypes. The example shown above is from my personal favorite body style. The Cadillac Eldorado was a coupe, yes, but it was of a subtype called a Personal Luxury Coupe. This sub-type of coupe was marketed as it's own category in years past. Indeed in 1980, there were no less than 14 Personal Luxury Coupe models offered by just the Detroit three. By 1990, that number was down to about 8 and by 2000 only the Cad…

That time has finally come, and I'm heading back to my "roots" (well, 4 year kind of roots by way of college)...Philly. I ended my 7 month tenure at the dealer in Maryland I've worked for on the 31st, and while it was a fun ride that I did almost too well at, it was way too far to drive everyday, in the wrong area and other things. As of now I'm going to be doing the same in Philly, for however long it goes, but with nicely improved perks and pay, and 15 minutes from home in the city, I think...as soon as we figure out where that is. I may be working for Acura, or Mazda, stores and have a few different options to pick from after interviewing Friday. Now, if only we coul…

I've posted pics of old roads (Route 66, the Lincoln Highway, etc.) and pictures of the "road ahead" from various trips and drives. But, one type of road I had not taken pictures of until December 18, 2010, is a BRAND NEW road. I'm not talking just new concrete/pavement ... I'm talking ... brand new ... as in NO pavement had been in that spot previously. For this photo shoot, the "Stearns Road Project": http://www.stearnsroad.com/ Stearns Road was extended from IL RT 25 to Randall Rd, providing a much-needed 4-lane bridge across the Fox River between Elgin and St Charles. The only other bridge crossing the Fox River between St Charles (IL RT 64) and Elgin (US RT 20)…
