Kia is very keen on teasing us. Last week, we showed off some renderings of the next-generation Cadenza that will be going on sale sometime next year. Now Kia has revealed a couple of renderings for an all-new hybrid model. Called the Niro, Kia describes this upcoming model as a Hybrid Utility Vehicle (HUV). Most likely, the Niro will share the platform and powertrain that will be used on Hyundai's upcoming hybrid model. It is expected that Kia will show the Niro at either the Detroit or Chicago Auto Show next year, with sales beginning sometime after. I usually am pretty good about staying up to date with new model intros and such, but this one isn't even on the manufacturer's website...yet, it has already appeared on a dealer's lot. What is it? The new Kia Rondo crossover. Last I even heard anything about this, they were discussing some unmasked spy shots, and now here it is for sale (and still not on the Kia site): http://www.dullesauto.com/Kia/273026_1.html Looks pretty good, if a bit dorky, for whatever market it is covering. And still, weird that it sorta popped out of nowhere...

Kia is planning to follow Hyundai with offering a range of performance models around the world. However, Kia isn't planning to make them as hardcore as Hyundai's upcoming N models. Hyundai and Kia’s performance development boss Albert Biermann tells Autocar that Kia's GT models will differ Hyundai's N models as they aren't designed to be taken on a racetrack. This means GT models will likely not see such tech as an electronically controlled limited slip differential that will be coming on the European-market i30 N Plus. What they will see is improvements in terms of performance, handling, and looks. Biermann admits that “GT is not right for all Kia models," but mo…

Maybe an old news now but. Not the teaser, nor just a renderring, but the pic of the real, production car that was released. The Korean article that I got this pic from is at: http://news.hankyung.com/201001/201001176718g.html?ch=news They get all the credit for these pics. The article are all in Korean, but those of you whom are curious to see the translation of what the Korean press said, I have posted it on my Pontiac site, so PM me then I will give you a link.

Quickening of GMI boards have posted the link where ALL the angles of the un-coverred 2009 Kia Borrego(called the Mohave in Korea) inside and out are posted. Korean market version, but I think this is the first time that EVERY angle of the car has been revealed. It's pretty dull, plain and bland, and yes, it's derivative in a way, but I think this is way LESS derivative than the Hyundai's latest Genesis Trash is. http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-kia-borrego/509383/ Just wanted to share it here as well. Sorry if anyone posted this before. I am not myself right now.

December 1, 2005 First Drive: 2006 Kia Sedona Review and photos by Paul Williams (Canadian Driver) Kelowna, British Columbia - Start a conversation with an auto writer, and the topic soon turns to -- you guessed it -- cars (sorry, it's all we really know). Fortunately, the guy next to me on a recent Kelowna-to-Vancouver flight was an enthusiastic car nut, and our subsequent talk made quick work of the one-hour flight. After reminiscing about the first cars we owned, along with the scariest cars we'd driven (his were a ‘62 Chevrolet Biscayne and a ‘56 Triumph TR3 respectively), the conversation got real. "What would you recommend for four-to-five pe…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com December 23, 2011 Kia's stunning GT concept, shown at this years Frankfurt Motor Show has been given the green light for production. But that's not all; sources inside Kia tell Inside Line that the company is mulling over a coupe and wagon. But why is Kia sending the GT into production? Well a comment from Kia's Chief Designer, Peter Schreyer gives us a clue. “Every company needs a halo car... The coupe market is dominated by German brands, and the GT is Kia’s first step. It’s like putting a foot in the door of the club.” The GT would be presented as a less expensive alternative to the German counterparts, much like…

So, I just completed a post on Squidoo which is intended to be a brief history of Kia but I'm not really satisfied with it. I have used a few different sites including Wikipedia but just can't find a lot of information on the brand, especially from founding in 1944 to 1974 when the Brisa was made. Any aficionados here have any clues? Here is a link to what I have so far: Kia: A Brief History of the Brand

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 29, 2012 Kia has released some actual pictures of the next Forte, due out sometime in early 2013. As some early sketches showed, the new Forte is a mix of Optima and Sportage design cues. Kia says the next Forte is longer, lower and wider than the current model, and its longer wheelbase will provide more interior room. As to how much more interior space, Kia isn't saying. Kia also says the new Forte will come with a revised engine lineup that promises "class-leading fuel economy." William Maley is a staff writer for Cheers & Gears. I am not drinking any merlot! By Donna DeRosa Date posted: 04-10-2006 Kia introduced its all-new 2006.5 Optima in scenic Napa Valley, California, where wine is king and Sideways the movie of choice. The sandy, hilly ground is ideal for growing grapes, and the curvy roads are perfect for test-driving cars. Even intermittent rain did not hamper our car-tasting pleasure. A fine blend of value and comfort, with subtle hints of sport Built in Kia's Hwasung manufacturing facility in South Korea, this second-generation Optima sits on a unique platform, no longer shared with Hyundai's Sonata. Kia says it took cues from European styling and lengthened the Optima's wheelbase…

2006.5 Kia Optima Everything you ever wanted in a 1998 Toyota Camry. by John Pearley Huffman (2006-04-24) The most impressive thing about Kia's new Sedona minivan is that it competes so effectively against contemporary competition like the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna. What's disappointing about Kia's new Optima four-door sedan is that, while it's better than any previous Kia sedan, it doesn't make the big leap forward the Sedona has. The Japanese competition is still clearly better. But before getting to the specifics here, what's the deal with this car being sold as "2006.5" model? The Kia guys mumbled something about it having to do with when the car went on s…

If you were hoping that Kia would bring over the Stonic crossover as an alternative to the upcoming Hyundai Kona, we have some bad news. A Kia representative told Autoblog there are no current plans for selling the Stonic in the U.S. This is a bit surprising as the U.S. has gone crossover crazy and automakers are beginning to fill out their lineups with models of varying sizes. Autoblog throws out the suggestion that the Stonic could cannibalize the sales of the Soul and upcoming Rio (which the Stonic is based on). We would also throw in the Niro crossover as it's about the same size as the Stonic (both are considered subcompacts). But there might be another reason. …

U.S. Kia Plant Groundbreaking Occuring Today The AIADA newsletter reported that Kia Motors President Chung Eui Sun is coming to America this week to attend the groundbreaking ceremony for the automaker's $1 billion assembly plant in West Point, Georgia. The automaker had planned to host the event in April, but plans were delayed when South Korean prosecutors would not allow Chung to travel amid an ongoing investigation by the South Korean government. The plant is expected to be completed in 2009, with an initial capacity target of 200,000 vehicles annually. Read "Groundbreaking for Kia's First U.S. Plant To Take Place Today" @ The Auto Channel

http://www.motortrend.com/cars/kia/stinger/2018/2018-kia-stinger-gt-first-test-review/ The review is largely unremarkable. They like how the car drives and the blend of ride compliance while maintaining handling responsiveness. The 3.3T V6 makes good power and rarely feels burdened unless it gets caught in the lower revs. They have some gripes with the 8-speed transmission hesitation and steering. One point of surprise is how this RWD example weighed in just over 4000 lbs despite being touted as one of the first cars on Hyundai/Kia's new lighter RWD platform. I personally find issue with the constant doting on Hyundai and Kia as being a "great first try," or a "good…

more later, but in short, went to drive a Sedona Saturday. In a lot of ways its a good product but in some ways it DOES NOT live up to all the hype its been getting. The Sienna, Odyssey AND QUEST are all superior. pros - willing engine, transmission, powertrain well sorted out, light and decently quick steering, manumatic available, seat adjusters on the door, warranty, spacious cons - slightly cheesy interior, suspension is too soft, does not feel seat of the pants durable for the long haul, 2nd row does not stow, cheap plastics and fabrics, boring gauges, cheap feeling power doors and rear hatch (when will it break), thin feeling sheet metal, could use a 6th gea…

Only a few months after we got the first spy shots of the upcoming Kia GT on U.S. soil, a leaked photo showing the production GT without any camouflage has come out. Kia-World.net got their hands on this photo which shows a pre-production GT sitting in one of Kia's factory. The design is toned down from the 2011 GT Concept, but the key details are here - similar roofline, vents on the hood, and taillights that extend into the rear fenders. It is expected that the GT will feature a turbocharged 3.3L V6 - introduced in the 2018 Genesis G80 Sport - along with a turbo-four. Kia-World says the GT will be called the K8 in Korea. No word on when Kia will show off …

The long-rumored and talked-about rear-drive Kia GT is coming soon and we have learned a little bit more information about it. Speaking with Australian outlet Motoring, Kia Australia COO Damien Meredith let out some interesting bits of information. “We can’t wait for CK. It will be here in the third quarter of next year, in two specifications priced from about $40,000 AUD," said Meredith. CK is the codename for the upcoming rear-drive sedan which according to Motoring is called Stinger. Meredith did confirm the Stinger would use a 3.3L biturbo V6 with 362 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque as its top engine. Most likely the base engine will be the 3.8L V6…

Even though it was launched a week ago, there is already about possible powertrains for the Kia Stinger. Spencer Cho, Kia’s overseas product marketing boss told Car and Driver that Stinger would benefit from the electrification options developed for the Optima, despite the different powertrain layouts - Optima uses a transverse layout, while the Stinger uses a longitudinal layout. “We can utilize the currently available hybrid, plug-in-hybrid, and EV technology” for the Stinger’s benefit, said Cho. While there are no immediate plans to do an electric Stinger, Cho said they could develop one very quickly. The development team behind the Stinger have consider…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com January 15, 2013 The last full-size FWD sedan Kia sold was the Amanti back in 2009. Four years later, Kia is giving the full-size FWD sedan another chance with the introduction of the Cadenza at the Detroit Auto Show. The Cadenza's exterior styling is a blend of athletic lines, Kia ubiquitous front grille, angular headlights, wraparound LED taillights, and dual oval exhaust tips. Peel back the skin and you'll the Hyundai Azera underpinnings, starting with the 3.3L V6 producing 293 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission to the front wheels. On January 29th, 2024, South Korea reported on the EV4 from Kia Vice President Woo-Jeong Woo during a conference call. Kia plans on launching their EV3 in the first half of 2024 while the EV4 will now launch in early 2025. During the 2023 Kia EV Day in October 2023, Kia announced the launch schedules of these two. After a fairly clear teaser image last month, the South Korean market Kia K5 has been unveiled. Kia hopes to make the same splash that Hyundai did with the mechanically similar 2020 Sonata. While this K5 is in Korean domestic market spec, we're fairly certain that the North American Optima will look virtually identical to this K5. The K5 may look like a hatchback similar to the Volkswagen Arteon or Buick Regal, but it is still in fact a sedan, the swoopiness of the car accentuated by the frameless windows. The new K5 is bigger than the outgoing Kia Optima by about 2 inches in length, and widened nearly an inch. Wheelbase has also been lengthened about 1.8 inches.…

The 2018 Kia Rio will be arriving at dealers next month and will still be one of the cheapest vehicles in the U.S. The base LX will set you back $14,795 for the sedan and $15,095 for the hatchback - prices include a $895 destination charge. The LX fits the definition of being a stripper as you don't get power windows, cruise control, or a center console. You do get steering-wheel audio controls, satellite radio, and a USB port. Next up is the S which begins at $16,995 (sedan) and $17,295 (hatch). It comes with power windows, cruise control, keyless entry, center console, backup camera, Bluetooth, and an additional USB port. The EX rounds out the Rio lineup wi…

The first Kia Stinger in the UK, a homologation test car, was saved from the crusher. As a pre-production car, it couldn't be sold to the public. As it sat in Kia's headquarters showroom, the Product and Press relations team were scheming up ways to keep the HiChroma Red GT S. After all, during its testing, it has racked up 10,000 miles, an unusually high amount for a test mule. Instead of being sent to the crusher, Kia brought in an engineering team from Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Centre in Rüsselsheim, Germany. The team upgraded the Twin Turbo V6 from 365 hp to 422 hp and peak torque from 376 lb-ft to 413 lb-ft. They replaced the exhaust with a lightweight…

Sean Yoon, president and CEO, Kia North America and Kia America made the following statement: “Like Telluride, EV9 has the potential to be another ‘game changer’ for Kia, this will be the most sophisticated vehicle that we have ever built and will be a standout in the EV market and on the road. Best of all, it will be assembled in West Point, Georgia.” Kia has announced a $200 million expansion of their West Point, Georgia assembly plant allowing production of the 2024 EV9 three-row SUV in the second quarter of 2024. Kia has stated that this will create 200 additional jobs and will be the fifth model assembled at Kia Georgia joining the Telluride, Sorento…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com May 21, 2013 The folks at Automotive.com got their hands on some interesting information concerning what's in store for Kia. We'll start with the Quoris, Kia's large, RWD flagship sedan. We've been hearing that this model would be coming to the U.S., but a date hasn't been given. Until now. According to a Kia offical, the Quoris is expected to arrive on our shores sometime next year. The Quoris was expected to come sooner, but with Kia introducing seven refreshed models this year, the decision was made to push it off next year. Also in the cards is a minivan. Kia brought back the 2012 Sedona as a 2014 model with some…

For whatever reason, the KIA EV4 has been postponed. From the US market. Until further notice. Probably never to be offered actually. The EV3 however, is expected to go on sale early 2026. KIA says that EV market conditions have shifted and changed. So there was a reason given actually. Random thought: Don't be surprised if even the EV3 does not go on sale in the US either. For the same reasons as to why the EV4 is delayed and postponed indefinitely until further notice in the near to far future. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a69207203/kia-ev4-delayed-indefinitely-united-states/ The EV4 was supposed to be one of tw…

Checked out a new 011 Sportage today. No drive, just sat in one. Nice! Not lux nice, but it's stylish, and the interior is laid out nicely and is well finished. Lots of passenger room and comfortable. Trunk could be a little bigger and finished nicer, but that is probably the biggest presentation flaw the car has. Plastics are not lux, but nice and low gloss. The design is interesting and very ergonomic. I love the console and center stack. This vehicle is at or near the top of my list. It's efficient, cheap, and stylish. Roomy too. They had 4. The one I sat in was 19k with a manual trans. Shifter was located nicely. I drove a tucson same equipped already, I…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com March 30, 2013 What Car? recently had the chance to chat with Kia U.S.' design chief Tom Kearns at the New York Auto Show this past week. Kearns revealed that the company is considering a model to compete with the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ. "We have made a model of an affordable, two-seat, rear-wheel-drive coupe," said Kearns. Insiders at Kia have reportedly said if the company decides to go forward with this idea, it could make Kia a more ' aspirational and emotional brand.' Source: What Car? William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com September 20, 2013 As we were expecting, Kia told its dealers this week that the K9/Quoris flagship sedan will be coming to the U.S. in early 2014. The flagship will wear the K900 nameplate (WHY?!) and have a marketing blitz during the 2014 Super Bowl according to dealers. The K900 will be Kia's first rear-wheel drive sedan sold in the U.S. and become the brand's flagship. It will come with the choice of either a V6 (likely the 3.8L with 290 horsepower) and V8 (likely the 5.0L Tau V8 from Hyundai with 420 horsepower). An eight-speed automatic transmission is expected to come as well. Pricing wasn't disclosed, but rumor…
