Kia has been trying to position itself as the sporty brand to help differentiate it from sister brand Hyundai with mixed success. But a report from Reuters says Kia is working on something that should give it the sporty image it has been desiring. According to two sources, Kia is working a rear-drive sports sedan to compete against the likes of the BMW 3-Series, Audi A4, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Codenamed CK, the model will feature three different engine options and will begin production next May. As Kia has no luxury brand, it is trying to position itself as a sporty brand," a source tells Reuters. Kia hopes the new sedan is able to replicate the massive su…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com March 30, 2013 What Car? recently had the chance to chat with Kia U.S.' design chief Tom Kearns at the New York Auto Show this past week. Kearns revealed that the company is considering a model to compete with the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ. "We have made a model of an affordable, two-seat, rear-wheel-drive coupe," said Kearns. Insiders at Kia have reportedly said if the company decides to go forward with this idea, it could make Kia a more ' aspirational and emotional brand.' Source: What Car? William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com December 23, 2011 Kia's stunning GT concept, shown at this years Frankfurt Motor Show has been given the green light for production. But that's not all; sources inside Kia tell Inside Line that the company is mulling over a coupe and wagon. But why is Kia sending the GT into production? Well a comment from Kia's Chief Designer, Peter Schreyer gives us a clue. “Every company needs a halo car... The coupe market is dominated by German brands, and the GT is Kia’s first step. It’s like putting a foot in the door of the club.” The GT would be presented as a less expensive alternative to the German counterparts, much like…

When Kia revealed the new Soul to the U.S. in 2018, they announced that the EV would be arriving sometime a year later. 2019 came and the automaker announced that the Soul EV had been pushed back to 2020. A few months later, the launch date was pushed to 2021. Now, an internal source at Kia's U.S. office has revealed to Roadshow that the Soul EV isn't coming at all. According to the source, a number of factors played into this decision. Some of the factors such as limited supply of batteries and motors, along with increased demand for the model Europe were used to explain the last delay. Also, the Soul EV has independent rear suspension. The standard Soul doesn't, wh…

Only a few months after we got the first spy shots of the upcoming Kia GT on U.S. soil, a leaked photo showing the production GT without any camouflage has come out. Kia-World.net got their hands on this photo which shows a pre-production GT sitting in one of Kia's factory. The design is toned down from the 2011 GT Concept, but the key details are here - similar roofline, vents on the hood, and taillights that extend into the rear fenders. It is expected that the GT will feature a turbocharged 3.3L V6 - introduced in the 2018 Genesis G80 Sport - along with a turbo-four. Kia-World says the GT will be called the K8 in Korea. No word on when Kia will show off …

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com August 23, 2012 Kia hasn't had a flagship since the unloved Amanti left years ago. Since that time, Kia has been looking what could take the place of it. The answer could be the new Cadenza which has been caught in spy pictures undergoing some hot weather testing. Looking the past the camouflage Kia has used on this mule, the Cadenza looks to be a slightly larger Optima sedan, with a similar shape in the windows, profile, and nose. Also, there are some pictures of the interior which include stitched dash cover, central clock, chrome accents, and a large screen for the infotainment system. The Cadenza will be mechanica…

We could count on our fingers on the stories saying the Kia GT will go into production since it was first shown as a concept back at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. But we had no hard evidence to show it was really coming, it was mostly hearsay. But an eagle eye spy photographer caught the first spy shots of the GT. How do we know its the GT? The Audi A7-like roofline gives it away. We can pull out some other details such as similarly shaped headlights like the GT concept and large air intakes. Around back is a set of quad exhaust tips, which Motor Trend speculates this prototype has the new twin-turbo 3.3L V6 with 365 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque. The…

Kia is very keen on teasing us. Last week, we showed off some renderings of the next-generation Cadenza that will be going on sale sometime next year. Now Kia has revealed a couple of renderings for an all-new hybrid model. Called the Niro, Kia describes this upcoming model as a Hybrid Utility Vehicle (HUV). Most likely, the Niro will share the platform and powertrain that will be used on Hyundai's upcoming hybrid model. It is expected that Kia will show the Niro at either the Detroit or Chicago Auto Show next year, with sales beginning sometime after. Source: Kia Press Release is on Page 2 Kia to launch all-new Niro Hybrid Utility Vehicle …

Not wanting to be left in dust, Kia has released some sketches of their upcoming subcompact crossover called the Stonic. No, we're not sure how to pronounce it. But Kia explains the name comes from combining "‘Speedy’ and ‘Tonic’, which refers to the first and last note in the musical scale." Let's move on to the crossover itself. It is clear that Kia is pulling from the Nissan Juke and Toyota C-HR design playbook as the Stonic. The concept sketches show a low roofline, angled headlights, and a tailgate design from the Sportage. The interior is mostly the same as the upcoming Rio subcompact with the floating infotainment screen and control layout. Kia isn't spilli…

We get it. The last time the minivan was popular was in the mid-90s, after they had successfully shoved the faithful family station wagon off the market. But even then, the sands of time weren't staying still. Larger crossovers were starting to come out and eat into the minivan market. By the early 2000s, manufacturers were looking for ways to revitalize the market, and in 2004, General Motors debuted their new U-Body vans as "Crossover Vans" to widespread ridicule. Twenty years later, Kia is giving it another go with the Kia Carnival MPV. Last year's Carnival MPV still retained some of its minivan looks. For 2025, the Carnival is built with a distinctly SUV shape;…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com February 27, 2012 A few weeks ago, Kia released some teaser sketches of their new K9 RWD flagship. The sketches revealed a lot of BMW influence along with some cues from the Optima and GT Concept. Now, two videos showing a uncloaked Kia K9 running around South Korea have appeared. The videos show the K9's design having a lot of BMW influence. The side profile of the K9 looks like a 7-Series. The comparison of the 7-Series continues with the back end. The front end is a mix of 5-Series GT and Kia's GT Concept. The new K9 will use the Hyundai Genesis' platform and likely share engines. The K9 will go on sale in South…

Go to kia.com and there you will find a link that will take you to a configurator site for the new Optima (I believe all the new Sportage info is available too). In any case, this may forecast the options and packaging for the Optima when it launches soon. For me, a base Optima, 6MT, already has bluetooth, USB, and stab control, looks like a hair under 19k. 24/35 mpg and 200hp like the Sonata. 19 grand for that (20,500 with automatic) makes a Cruze look price challenged.....

Last week's teaser image of the 2010 Kia Sorento was just to whet our appetite, and now new images have surfaced that show big changes are in store for Kia's CUV. The biggest deal is that the Sorento will move from a traditional body-on-frame construction to a unit-body design. The new look is more muscular, following some of the same themes as the sharp looking Forte. In the North American market, the new Sorento will reportedly carry a four cylinder or the snarly 3.8-liter Lambda V6. Attendees of the Seoul Motor Show in April will get to feast their eyes on this version of the Sorento, code-named XM. Sales also begin in April, so Kia's West Point, Georgia manufacturing …

more later, but in short, went to drive a Sedona Saturday. In a lot of ways its a good product but in some ways it DOES NOT live up to all the hype its been getting. The Sienna, Odyssey AND QUEST are all superior. pros - willing engine, transmission, powertrain well sorted out, light and decently quick steering, manumatic available, seat adjusters on the door, warranty, spacious cons - slightly cheesy interior, suspension is too soft, does not feel seat of the pants durable for the long haul, 2nd row does not stow, cheap plastics and fabrics, boring gauges, cheap feeling power doors and rear hatch (when will it break), thin feeling sheet metal, could use a 6th gea…

InsideLineVideo youtubed this vid a while back, maybe most of you saw it, but it too, I didn't see it posted here, so I will do it right now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlIZ9TbzdIQ The pic of the concept: About the only Kia I think that looks OK among their concepts. To me, if they can manage to keep MOST of the features that the concept had, I think this will have some potentials. Though, it maybe just me.

The Kia VG Concept has been unveiled at the Seoul Auto Show and it looks... good. Nice for a concept? No, it's a veiled version of a V6-powered FWD flagship replacement for the Amanti. The Kia VG will be going on sale later this year in Korea with international distribution following thereafter, including the US. The possibility of production is revealed in its believable powertrain. The VG starts off with a 194.6 inch overall length over a front-wheel-drive platform motivated by a 3.5-liter V6 good for 277 HP, which is backed up by a manumatic six speed transmission. The car wears the now-familiar Kia grille flanked by some slightly surprised-looking headlights and and…

So, what happens when you build a Kia based on the Azera's architecture? You get Kia's upcoming flagship sedan. The Kia VG concept has leaked onto the web and will debut at the Seoul Motor Show later this week. It's one of these concept-in-name-only deals, so look for the production version to hit South Korean showrooms in September, with a North American arrival in Spring, 2010. Power for the front-driver will range from the 2.4-liter four we'll be seeing a lot of in the coming months, to the 3.8-liter Lambda V6 in what's likely to be the range-topping torque-steer special. Looks nice, too. Kia's increasingly-formidable, value-priced lineup gets better with each new anno…

Kia's new U.S. plant is no windfall for U.S. suppliers Lindsay Chappell | | Automotive News / April 3, 2006 - 6:00 am When Kia Motors Corp. opens its $1.2 billion vehicle assembly plant in Georgia in 2009, the largest companies supplying the parts are more likely to be named Mobis or Dongwon than Magna or Dana. Instead of looking for new suppliers in the United States, Kia will piggyback onto the largely Korean supply chain that opened last year in Alabama to serve Kia's sister company, Hyundai Motor Co. Kia has told Georgia officials that it envisions only five or six new supplier plants being necessary to support the Georgia auto plant. U.S. companies have rea…

http://www.motortrend.com/cars/kia/stinger/2018/2018-kia-stinger-gt-first-test-review/ The review is largely unremarkable. They like how the car drives and the blend of ride compliance while maintaining handling responsiveness. The 3.3T V6 makes good power and rarely feels burdened unless it gets caught in the lower revs. They have some gripes with the 8-speed transmission hesitation and steering. One point of surprise is how this RWD example weighed in just over 4000 lbs despite being touted as one of the first cars on Hyundai/Kia's new lighter RWD platform. I personally find issue with the constant doting on Hyundai and Kia as being a "great first try," or a "good…

I usually am pretty good about staying up to date with new model intros and such, but this one isn't even on the manufacturer's website...yet, it has already appeared on a dealer's lot. What is it? The new Kia Rondo crossover. Last I even heard anything about this, they were discussing some unmasked spy shots, and now here it is for sale (and still not on the Kia site): http://www.dullesauto.com/Kia/273026_1.html Looks pretty good, if a bit dorky, for whatever market it is covering. And still, weird that it sorta popped out of nowhere...

RWD Sedan And A Range Of Sporty Models For Kia William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com March 24, 2011 Kia has ambitious plans in their lineup for the future including a new RWD flagship and a series of sporty models. The RWD flagship, possibly named K9 will be the first use of sister brand Hyundai's RWD architecture for Kia. Kia will borrow Hyundai's 4.6-Liter Tau V8 and ZF's eight speed transmission. The K9 could make its first appearance in 2012. As for sporty models, the first model that could receive an injection of sportiness is the new Kia Rio. Benny Oeyen, marketing and product planning chief for Kia said, "I can imagine a sporty Kia …

Spied: 2009 Kia Mesa Hard to tell if these recent spy photos are really the 2009 Kia Mesa or not, but now that the Hyundai Veracruz has been unveiled it's not much of a stretch to think Kia would want a three row SUV of its own. You can see a few styling cues from the Mesa concept in this prototype like its broad grille and boxy shape. Those six-spoke wheels also look straight out of the Kia/Hyundai parts bin. With the Veracruz scheduled to go on sale later this year, expect to see the Kia version hit the streets about a year later. Edmunds Straightline

2006 Kia Sedona Homework does pay off, kids. by Bengt Halvorson (2006-02-13) Few vehicles are both loved and despised as much as the minivan. As models of how to move passengers and cargo safely, comfortably, and economically, they've found a loyal base of buyers. But they're also hated - including by some of those same loyal buyers - for being just short of anonymous. Despite how several automakers have allowed their minivan models to slide out of the limelight, minivans are still a very significant chunk of the new-vehicle market, with still more than a million sold per year in the U.S. The Kia Sedona was originally introduced for the U.S. market for 2002, wi…

2006.5 Kia Optima Everything you ever wanted in a 1998 Toyota Camry. by John Pearley Huffman (2006-04-24) The most impressive thing about Kia's new Sedona minivan is that it competes so effectively against contemporary competition like the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna. What's disappointing about Kia's new Optima four-door sedan is that, while it's better than any previous Kia sedan, it doesn't make the big leap forward the Sedona has. The Japanese competition is still clearly better. But before getting to the specifics here, what's the deal with this car being sold as "2006.5" model? The Kia guys mumbled something about it having to do with when the car went on s…

U.S. Kia Plant Groundbreaking Occuring Today The AIADA newsletter reported that Kia Motors President Chung Eui Sun is coming to America this week to attend the groundbreaking ceremony for the automaker's $1 billion assembly plant in West Point, Georgia. The automaker had planned to host the event in April, but plans were delayed when South Korean prosecutors would not allow Chung to travel amid an ongoing investigation by the South Korean government. The plant is expected to be completed in 2009, with an initial capacity target of 200,000 vehicles annually. Read "Groundbreaking for Kia's First U.S. Plant To Take Place Today" @ The Auto Channel
