General Motors Corp. and workers at its assembly plant in suburban Moraine have reached a tentative contract agreement that would put the facility in position to build a new generation of sport utility vehicles, a GM official said Wednesday. GM declined to comment on the details of the contract. The International Union of Electronic Workers Local 798, which represents the plant's workers, didn't return a call for comment but its Web site confirmed an agreement had been reached. One analyst says that if General Motors were forced to buy-out Delphi workers it would cost the General more than $1 Billion (Dr. Eeeeeeeeevil) dollars and to help keep the parts supplier out of bankruptcy. Last May, General Motors agreed to a consent order from federal safety regulators over its decision on waiting too long recall 2.6 million vehicles with faulty ignition switches. Part of the order was to disclose detailed safety issues and meet with officials from NHTSA monthly. This could be extended up to three years. Well after a year of being under scrutiny, NHTSA has decided to extend it one more year. The Detroit News obtained a letter from NHTSA to GM dated on May 14th. The letter, written by Timothy H. There was story that GM was cutting back on orders of pickups equipped with the 5.3L V8 due to supplier issues and the concern of dealers not being able to move as many trucks because of GM's decision to not pile on incentives.
