[source: Wall Street Journal] GM Gets Bankruptcy Court Approval By DAVID MCLAUGHLIN NEW YORK -- General Motors Corp. won court approval Thursday to borrow the full amount of a $33 billion loan from the U.S. and Canada while it moves to swiftly wrap up its bankruptcy restructuring. Judge Robert Gerber of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan gave final approval to the financing at a court hearing. When GM filed for bankruptcy June 1, the judge said GM could borrow about half of the loan. It took about 15 minutes for the judge to approve the financing after GM lawyers said they had resolved a number of objections. The loan is de…

Automotive News September 1, 2008 - 12:01 am ET This year's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance celebrated General Motors' centennial with the display of 20 of the automaker's Motorama cars. Today they're called concept cars, but in the '50s they generally were called "cars of the future." One Motorama car in particular made a lasting impression on a young Ed Welburn, now GM's design vice president. "What was the first Motorama car I saw? I was 8 years old. It was the Philadelphia auto show. I was crazy about cars, and the Cadillac Cyclone was there," Welburn said in California at the Pebble Beach event. "It was an incredible experience for me. It is just like I …

Today on FastLane, we kick off a series of videos entitled, “The Case for GM,” in which General Motors leaders discuss the challenges we’re facing, what we’re doing to address them — and also why we still feel good about our future. This series will work better as a dialogue, so we’d love to hear your responses — and we’ll respond to questions that are offered in the spirit of sincere dialogue. Some of the responses will come from our execs; many will come from GM team members (and yes, we do think of ourselves as a team.) Check back on Monday, when GM Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner weighs in with his thoughts and stay tuned for more commentary by other GM leaders in the w…

General Motors Corp. and workers at its assembly plant in suburban Moraine have reached a tentative contract agreement that would put the facility in position to build a new generation of sport utility vehicles, a GM official said Wednesday. GM declined to comment on the details of the contract. The International Union of Electronic Workers Local 798, which represents the plant's workers, didn't return a call for comment but its Web site confirmed an agreement had been reached. The site offered no details on the contract. The plant's future was put into question in February when GM said the workers would have to become more competitive in producing vehicles. There were …

(Other OTC:DPHIQ.PK - News) workers had taken the early retirement incentives. "I think it's going pretty well," Gettelfinger said. "I think it's a little better than we initially expected." In Indianapolis, It's Autoworkers versus Autoworkers The Atlantic GM's bankruptcy was structured as something called a 363 sale, in which you create a new company which buys the assets you want the reorganized firm to keep, and leave the remaining assets in the old company, which then tries to sell them for whatever they're worth and gives creditors the money. Needless to say, the assets left inside the old company are often not as valuable as the ones the company keeps--they may have little value at all. So when "Old GM" found a buyer for its Indianapolis stamping plant, that was a happy piece of news; if it's not sold, the plant will be shut down in September of nex…

Reuters / August 25, 2005 FRANKFURT -- DaimlerChrysler and General Motors have clinched their deal to co-develop new hybrid vehicle technology, a GM spokesman said on Thursday. The partners had announced in December an agreement in principle to develop hybrids as they try to catch up with Japanese rivals on the fuel-saving systems that reduce harmful emissions. "We now have a binding and definitive agreement on development of a full hybrid system," the spokesman said, adding it took effect on Aug. 22. The automakers have said they will develop a "two-mode" hybrid technology that boosts both acceleration and fuel economy by 25 percent and…

GM says "Lets Buyout Delphi!" As if they have the cash. One analyst says that if General Motors were forced to buy-out Delphi workers it would cost the General more than $1 Billion (Dr. Eeeeeeeeevil) dollars and to help keep the parts supplier out of bankruptcy. The Free Press link below states that the General may be looking to pay as much as $100,000 to some 23,000 Delphi workers for them to retire with full benefits to help the struggling parts supplier. By TOM KRISHER and DAN STRUMPF, AP Auto Writers Tom Krisher And Dan Strumpf, Ap Auto Writers – 2 hrs 30 mins ago Story Link DETROIT – A General Motors Corp. bankruptcy filing seemed inevitable after a rebellion by its bondholders forced it to withdraw on Wednesday a plan to swap bond debt for company stock. GM has until Monday to complete a government-ordered restructuring that includes debt reduction, labor cost cuts and plant closures. But a Chapter 11 reorganization is likely after the company said its offer to exchange $27 billion in unsecured debt for 10 percent of the company's stock had failed. GM deal 'a black day' for Canada's auto sector By GREG KEENAN, From Thursday's Globe and Mail One of the key pillars supporting Canada's long-standing competitive advantage in the auto industry began crumbling Wednesday, less than a week after another one collapsed. General Motors Corp. and the United Auto Workers reached a deal that shifts the burden of retiree health-care costs for U.S. workers to the union. The agreement dramatically reduces GM's burdensome cost structure and once it's followed by Chrysler LLC and Ford Motor Co. , will reduce the health-care advantage Canada has used for more than a generation to help lure automotive investment to this country.…

By Jason Stein | for wheelbase communications November 23, 2008 In the world of automotive design, where each crease has a meaning and every crevice has a story, Wayne Cherry was a wiggle in a world of straight lines. In an era of pop-star obsessions over designers and their creations, General Motors’ former North American design boss was the anomaly. He was a Midwestern boy with a global outlook; a soft-spoken executive whose artwork spoke volumes. Not extravagant like current GM product czar Robert Lutz. Not a cult figure like Ford design whiz J Mays. And definitely not a conversation piece the way BMW’s lead designer Chris Bangle has been. Cherry alway…

On February 17, 2008, the San Francisco Chronicle printed an interview with GM's Chairman and CEO, Rick Wagoner. There are a number of interesting questions, such as a query about his job performance: "Q: When you became CEO, you had four main goals. One was to develop a sense of urgency for GM. The second was to become innovative. Thirdly, stretch beyond your limits or imagined limits and act as a single company. Do you feel you are delivering on that? A: I would say those are running pretty well. Basically, the last one talks about the fact that we tended to run our business as a U.S. business, Europe business, etc. To be competitive, and to take advantage of the be…

Jamie Lareau Automotive News June 8, 2009 - 12:01 am ET General Motors, which already has told more than 1,300 dealerships they will be dropped, is pressuring survivors to sign a contract that gives up rights spelled out for dealerships in state franchise laws. To enforce the deal, GM issued a threat: If dealers don't sign, the company can, in bankruptcy, cancel their franchises now. Dealers must sign by this Friday, June 12, or risk termination. Such agreements ordinarily could not be enforced because they conflict with state franchise laws, which limit an automaker's freedom to rewrite franchise agreements. But GM is working on the theory that federal ban…

I didn't know quite where to put this, so admins feel free to move it. I don't think GM knows how to play the game of Washington politics, and by not knowing has made a huge mistake. Yeah we all know they shouldn't have flown to DC in their corporate jets, we also all know they are not looking for a bailout, but instead are looking for a loan, but what I'm talking about transcends even that. What I'm talking about is this: GM is being outflanked by the Germans, Koreans, Japanese and very soon by the Chinese and Indians. What I mean by that is for every plant/site GM shuts down outside of Michigan, they lose their two US Senator's and their US Representative's VOTES, t…

Government Motors no more An apology is due to Barack Obama: his takeover of GM could have gone horribly wrong, but it has not AMERICANS expect much from their president, but they do not think he should run car companies. Fortunately, Barack Obama agrees. This week the American government moved closer to getting rid of its stake in General Motors (GM) when the recently ex-bankrupt firm filed to offer its shares once more to the public. Once a symbol of American prosperity, GM collapsed into the government’s arms last summer. Years of poor management and grabby unions had left it in wretched shape. Efforts to reform came too late. When the recession hit, demand for car…

GM to cut production at six pickup, SUV plants Sharon Terlep | Link to Original Article @ The Detroit News General Motors Corp. will cut production of large trucks and sport utility vehicles to avoid overstocking as demand for vehicles slips, the automaker said today. The company has canceled planned overtime for the rest of the year at six North American plants, including one in Flint, spokesman Tom Wickham said. The automaker wants to clear dealer lots and avoid a surplus that would force deep discounts on vehicles such as the Suburban SUV and new full-size pickups, he said. " Looking at buying a Chevy Silverado or GMC Sierra? You may be in for a turbulent ride. GM engineers can’t seem to pinpoint the cause of a mysterious recurring issue in vehicles riding on GM’s K2XX platform, which includes its full-size trucks and SUVs, a problem that was referred to by one dealer as “The Chevy Shake.” Because GM can’t isolate the cause of the problem, a permanent fix has also been elusive. In December, AutoGuide.com ran a report detailing buffeting and vibration issues found in some GM full-size SUVs after being contacted by an owner who was experiencing these problems. While investigating the SUV issue, another flaw with different GM vehicles sur…

Back in 2005, Opel opened in all respects, an embassy in Berlin, to be able to wheel and deal with the German politicians as they saw fit. GM, needs to set this up in Washington, D.C. as far as I am concerned, to help with North American Auto issues. For those that have visited the German capital, this is the Opel building you see there. One that is near and dear to me. German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder opens ‘Opel in Berlin’ 2002.05.14. Rüsselsheim/Berlin. The German Chancellor, Gerhard Schröder, along with the Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit, and the Chairman of Opel's Board of Management, Carl-Peter Forster, today opened ‘Opel in Berlin', Opel's new coordinati…

Over the weekend, General Motors published and then deleted the power figures for the new 6.6L Duramax Diesel V8 that would be appearing in the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD. Today at the Texas State Fair, GM revealed everything about this new engine. We'll begin with the most important detail, power output. The numbers that GM revealed match the numbers posted to their powertrain site - 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque. Compared to the current Duramax V8, the new engine produces 48 more horsepower and 145 more pound-feet of torque. How was GM able to pull this off? They basically went through the engine with a fine tooth comb and made v…

Link to article GM posts surprise sales gain U.S. automaker bucks industry trend to post gain in U.S. sales in August; Ford sales plunge could drop it out of long-held No. 2 spot By Chris Isidore, CNNMoney.com senior writer September 4 2007: 2:10 PM EDT NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- General Motors posted a surprise sales gain in August, bucking an industry trend of weak auto sales in the period, and helping domestic brands to recapture a majority of U.S. sales. GM said its sales of cars and light trucks, such as SUVs and pickups, rose 6 percent in the month to 385,529 vehicles. Car models saw a nearly 8 percent drop in sales, but that was outweighed by the the 16…

##Excuse the grammatical errors they arent the best in the world## ANDERSON — Concern about General Motors’ ability to restructure operations, cut costs and boost sales was raised after the company filed its annual report to investors Thursday with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. “(GM’s) recurring losses from operations, stockholders’ deficit and inability to generate sufficient cash flow to meet its obligation and sustain its operations raise substantial doubt about its ability to continue as a going concern,” the company’s auditor, Deloitte & Touche LLP, indicated in the report. Shares in the company closed at $1.86 Thursday on the New York Stock …

Wall Street Journal New GM Chief Says Company Can Hit U.S. Goals The new head of General Motors Corp. said Tuesday the company could reach the goals set by the U.S. auto task force ahead of a June 1 deadline. Fritz Henderson, installed Monday as interim chief executive, said GM remained focused on restructuring out of court and understood the tasks needed to avoid a "quick rinse" bankruptcy. Mr. Henderson told reporters that GM had made "a good down payment" on a new restructuring plan after the federal task force said Monday GM's existing efforts were insufficient, and turned down a company request for fresh …

Wall Street Journal For GM Bondholders, Time Is a Weapon President Obama delivered a powerful warning to General Motors' unions and bondholders, suggesting that he was prepared to push the company into bankruptcy to force them to accept serious cuts. Now the great game of chicken begins. Does he really mean it? A bankruptcy would force bondholders to take big losses on $29 billion of unsecured debt. But that doesn't mean the bondholders will quietly accept their fates. In many cases, these are the same investors who won a big victory over the government in the case of GMAC, the auto maker's finance arm, just three months ago. The bondhol…

Bailout Blues: GM can’t afford to throw out its Opel baby By: John LeBlanc The latest has Government Motors refusing to explain the “why” it can’t make a decision between what the German government wants (Canadian Magna’s Russian-backed bid) and what the automaker wants (Belgian private equity RHJ International’s bid that would give GM more control in a new Opel.) Now listen up. Your Canadian pride may be backing Magna (Way cool—Canada’s first modern automaker!!) But as a Canadian taxpayer now with a share of GM, you may want to start cheering for the RHJ guys. Here’s why. Full Story at Wheels.ca

General Motors's Wuling minivans and Chevrolet Spark minicars are so popular in China that even the vehicles reserved for test drives at its Liuzhou factory have been sold. GM is hiring 500 more workers to keep up with demand. In Lordstown, Ohio, meanwhile, GM is pressing the United Auto Workers union to give up janitorial jobs. The contrasting pictures in Asia and North America show why - just 18 months after the chief executive, Rick Wagoner, had to fend off speculation the company might go bankrupt - GM stands to emerge as the strongest of the three U.S. automakers. By pushing sales in developing countries while slashing labor costs in costly markets like the United …

Last May, General Motors agreed to a consent order from federal safety regulators over its decision on waiting too long recall 2.6 million vehicles with faulty ignition switches. Part of the order was to disclose detailed safety issues and meet with officials from NHTSA monthly. This could be extended up to three years. Well after a year of being under scrutiny, NHTSA has decided to extend it one more year. The Detroit News obtained a letter from NHTSA to GM dated on May 14th. The letter, written by Timothy H. Goodman (a lawyer for NHTSA) to GM North America general counsel Lucy Clark Dougherty said the agency would be extending the order. Now this isn't because NHTSA…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 27, 2013 General Motors' rollout of their new pickups has hit a few bumps. There was story that GM was cutting back on orders of pickups equipped with the 5.3L V8 due to supplier issues and the concern of dealers not being able to move as many trucks because of GM's decision to not pile on incentives. Well here's another bump in the road. Automotive News is reporting that GM has cut back production on regular and double cab version of the trucks due to a supplier issue. GM's plant in Fort Wayne, Indiana has cut production from 1,500 trucks a day to 1,300 due to a supplier not being able to deliver enough axles. …

Last month, the automaker reported it had lost $115 million in the third quarter but in a new filing with the U.S. Securities Exchange Commission, GM added new revenue from its finance arm, General Motors Acceptance Corp. The changes bolstered chairman and chief executive officer Richard Wagoner's argument that GM's recovery continues to pick up momentum. Last year, GM lost $1.664 billion, or $2.94 a share, during the third quarter. …

David Shepardson / Detroit News Washington Bureau Washington -- Detroit's Big Three automakers came closer than America realized to becoming the Big Two. General Motors Corp. ended merger talks with Chrysler LLC in November 2008 to focus on getting emergency federal aid, but Chrysler continued to believe a tie-up with GM was its best chance for survival. In April, as both automakers were surviving on government aid and fighting bankruptcy, Obama administration officials spent two weeks working on a plan for GM to acquire Chrysler's best assets and keep the doors open on a third of its factories. Some members of President Barack Obama's auto task force saw it as a f…

When the news leaked on March 29th that Rick Wagoner, GM’s chief executive for nine years, had been told to step down by the president’s auto task-force in favour of his number two, Fritz Henderson, there was little doubt that more unpleasant medicine was on the way. Reuters / September 08, 2005 DETROIT -- The head of the United Auto Workers said on Thursday he was optimistic about reaching a negotiated settlement of General Motors' demands for cuts in union health-care and other benefits. But Ron Gettelfinger, president of the UAW, also said GM had more problems than health care and warned that the union may not be able to help "stabilize" the situation at the troubled automaker. "The UAW understands that health-care costs are a problem, not just for General Motors, but for every other American employer," Gettelfinger said in a speech to Detroit area business leaders. Wagoner Rumors Start to Swirl Will GM lose its CEO to financial churn? by Joseph Szczesny (2006-03-06) For General Motors' Rick Wagoner, March ought to be a good if not a great month. His beloved Duke Blue Devils are an odds-on favorite to sweep through the NCAA Tournament, and GM's retail sales are showing signs of moving in a positive direction after two years of enormous difficulty. However, while no one is predicting that GM's board of directors has asked Wagoner to prepare a resignation letter, the gossip around Detroit is that he could be reaching the end of his tenure as GM's chairman and chief executive officer. Until recently, Wagoner had been viewed as GM…

GM, which has restated results in seven of its last eight quarters, said the changes are due primarily to tax accounting adjustments and "could be material."
