This weekend, my wife & I had planned a trip to Yellowstone, but the weather turned crappy. So last minute we picked out a destination to the south for better weather, and went to the Great Basin National Park. Beautiful hiking & caves, good times. Drove partway home yesterday & spent the night at Windover, and soon learned it's on the edge of the Utah Salt Flats. This morning we popped by the Bonneville Speedway, where all the racing happens on the salt flats. I didn't know what to expect, but I figured there would be at least some kind of dragstrip-esque buildings. Nope, nothing. No one was out racing either, unfortunately, but there were some folks a…

Well, I am on vacation next week, and boy, do I need it. Relaxation. New scenery. No schedule. Sounds so good. This morning, I am heading up to Tioga County, PA, to join family for a cookout for Dad at my brother's cabin. Should be a good time. I return tomorrow evening, and then everything's wide open. The beach, camping... not sure what I'll do, but at least it won't be in that office. For all you Dads, Sons and Daughters, have a good Father's Day.

Very breezy and downright cold for June 21st, with partial high clouds. Like last year, we're all going to Dad's. We'll bring the food, he'll grill it. T-bones, big ol' potatoes, corn on the cob, salad, and some jalapenos to halve, top with sharp cheddar and grill (YUM). Sons, daughters and dads, what will you do today?

It's been a while since I've last checked in so here's a short update since my last post. After a little over 2 years with Car and Driver, I am now back on the hunt for employment/trying to get back into the grind as a freelancer. Unfortunately, my position (and a dozen others) was cut two weeks ago due to a restructuring effort. It was sudden and completely unexpected for those who were let go and those who weren't. While I'm sad to leave the company, I'm remaining positive with the hope that better opportunities lie ahead and wish everyone there well. I couldn't have asked for better coworkers. That said, I'm still in Michigan—For now. Josh and I have been m…

ADELAIDE, Australia - An Australian farmer held hostage in Mali for 12 days by a gang of men who had posed as an online love interest has urged others to be careful when seeking romance on the Internet. Des Gregor, 56, traveled to the West African nation last month to meet his supposed bride, whom he had met on the Internet, and collect a dowry of gold bars worth $85,000. But when he arrived, the wheat and sheep farmer was abducted by a gang of armed bandits who bound him, beat him with a machete and stole his cash and credit cards. Video: "Total Recall" featurette: Hover Car - Watch how the producers of the upcoming remake of "Total Recall" choose not to use CGI to create the hover cars used in the film and the technology they employed to make these cars "real". Link: http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/total-recall-2012/trailers/total-recall-featurette-hover-car-30145564.html\ *I've got to say I'm excited to see this remake. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday... every evening this week I've tried to get in to the gym. But the parking lot is full to capacity, with 4 or 5 cars blocking the aisles, following people to their cars so they can grab their spots. It's this way every January since I joined there a few years ago. By next month, I predict all will be normal again, and the couch potatoes will plant themselves once more. Sigh.

I subscribed to Collectible Automobile magazine for years. They do a nice job with their photos and the info in the text. Now I just buy the issues containing vehicles I am really interested in. . I snagged the current issue yesterday off the magazine rack. It features full-sized Oldsmobiles from 1971-'76. Some nice pix accompanying the article, including a '72 98 Regency just like the car I had up into 1978. Also some really nice pix of a '56 DeSoto Fireflite.

I recently posted 'how the EV tax credit works', but I had it wrong. Want to correct the gist of it here. I was under the incorrect impression that the credit offset the amount you owed when you FILED. My wife [who was an economics major, has worked for a major investment house for a few decades, does our taxes and is one smart cookie] explained to me the credit goes against the TOTAL fiscal tax liability. This would include any check you write at filing time AND your taxes paid during the year, most of which came out of your salary. The bottom line as explained to me by this smart cookie is, anyone who is remotely fiscally sane (income high enough to get financ…

It's rolling around to my original hire date (July 3rd), and I still have 2 weeks vacation time coming that I have to use before then, or I lose it, per written company policy. So I took next week and the last week of the month, which means I'll be off one week, work two, then off another in June. I earned this time, and I think I need it, although there are no big plans. Yesterday, my boss pulls me aside and says if I "want" to, he can make arrangements with the BIG boss that I can take one week off, then for the second week, I can take the vacation pay but come to work, or I can push the second week off past my hire date, which means I will have 4 weeks vacation comi…

I figured I would just start one thread and just post to it on the Fridays I remember. I see I only posted one previous #RacingFriday thread with Ken Gushi & Tyler McQuarrie so if the admins don't mind merging it would be cool. So, anyway, onto today's post. In the video below you can see a near miss at 140mph. The driver exhibits some real skill but, as far as I can tell, he's an amateur (he may want to reconsider that). The video hosted at the link is a trimmed version of the good parts but I also include the link to the full You Tube video where the driver gives his POV.

Not sure which is the best forum to stick this- would be nice to be seen publicly- move thread at will. Nice overview of many of the GM plants, esp with the names from the heights of GM's success. 'NUMMI' may have significance to those into Vibes & matrixes, but 'Fremont' built the cars people treasure & collect. This info (and more) will eventually get into the upcoming C&G Wiki, but this is especially nice because there are numerous pics. Even driving by these sites seldom gives any indication of the size of these complexes. http://canadianponcho.activeboard.com/index.spark?aBID=118110&p=3&topicID=37134625&page=1&sort=newestFirst

Sorry I did not get all the details, but I saw on Autoblog.com. Thje SVT division is getting the plug pulled. I wonder where this will go for Fords performance future? The Ford GT dies in 07 and little has been said about a replacment. Also Ford really has said little on performance models outside the Shelby. Will they farm them out to an outside companies to develope and save money? Much of the Ford GT was done by Roush and Salaeen.

Alright, since my hand was tipped in the thread that was going the other direction I'll do this one now. What one brand do you think is truly expendable? What one brand of car would you get rid of, why, and would you do anything with the products it is currently making? I know GM is already shutting down the plants but so far planning to keep the name, but I say let Holden go. There are a couple of their vehicles which have already been rebadged under the Chevrolet umbrella, and I say go ahead and do that with the remaining models that don't have straight-up matches already in the Chevy line-up. Most importantly, this gives the opportunity to bring back the El Cam…

Let's start by saying that I love my GTI. Maybe I'm not as smitten with it as I was when I bought it, but I still genuinely like the car a lot. Generally, when I've had a car for nearly a year, the attraction has waned like the lover you forced yourself to marry because of the accidental child your loins produced. This isn't the case this go around likely due to the fact that it's not a Toyota Avalon. Oh, the embarrassment of telling people you bought a Toyota Avalon at the age of 23... I can't wait to become the average age of the typical Avalon buyer just so I can forget about actually buying one. That car, however, did have one thing going for it: Guaranteed reliab…

This financial product helped me buy my current car. I loved the "top off," which meant"rounding up." It gave me an extra $700+ when I bought the last car. They recently ran another "top off." QUESTION(S): How is this financial product managed? I know the bookkeeping for each cardholder's account is separate, but are they managed separately like a trust ... or are they pooled? I know they couldn't manage an individual cardholder's account, as in spending time doing that, but maybe they might manage them in tiers (accounts with similar amount in benefits, economic cycles, spending habits, goings-on and trends at GM, etc.) From what I recall, the usual tak…

Start Stop, Affects the Starter? So I have also wondered this and another web site actually got an answer. More info available at Green Car Report but to quote their story, the end result of what happens with the starter system on new auto's is as follows: What follows is his explanation of those technologies. (1) The gear ratio from the starter-drive pinion to the flywheel ring gear is optimized to make the starter's motor turn more slowly. This can be done without materially changing the design of the transmission or flywheel at all on existing designs. Crucially, this reduces starter-motor speed (in RPM), since 90 percent of starter-motor brush wear…

Rolling down the freeway this morning, right around sunrise, I see a white Impala 6-8 car lengths ahead of me, in my lane. As I get closer, I notice it seems oddly narrow. Then I get closer, and notice it's missing the gold bowtie, but has a blue emblem instead. A blue oval. D'oh. Turns out to be a current gen Focus sedan. Anyone else have a moment like this, confuse two different, unrelated models that up close really seem to be nothing alike, but from a distance.... similar taillights, decklid, fascia..

It's sometimes ironic what will trigger a memory. On Halloween, I went with my sister, nephew and friends to watch the kids trick or treat. One of the houses we visited was the one in which my grandparents lived during their "retirement years". Standing in front of it, I "flashed back" to scenes from Halloweens long ago of my sister, our cousins and me as kids eager to show Gram and Gramps our costumes ... and, of course, to get candy. As we walked away from the house and walked past the driveway and the telephone poll that damaged my 1981 Monte Carlo Sport Coupe, I caught a glimpse of the garage behind the house ... and almost immediately flashed back to a few "uncoo…

"I see the way out & I'm gonna take it" __ Carrie Underwood __ 'Wasted' I hate stress, sleeplessness & cancer. I dislike gloominess, loneliness & disloyalty. I like dogs, "me" time & bonfires. I love driving/road trips, music & conversations. "...If, at the end, according to our abilities, we have done something to make others a little happier, & something to make ourselves a little happier, that is about the best we can do. To make others less happy is a crime." Since 12/19/2012, I've tried to make others a little happier, as well as myself, with my OLD CARS, STRONG HEARTS facebook page. If you're on facebook & haven't yet, why…

So companies this week have been rolling out the commercials leading up to SuperBowl Sunday. Have you watched any yet and have a favorite? http://tv.yahoo.com/news/how-will-audi-s-super-bowl-commercial-end--you-decide--181755230.html;_ylt=AhC9VB5XUIFJWztrjZN_WcuOJvJ_;_ylu=X3oDMTNvNXFsY2w3BG1pdAMEcGtnAzNiZTg3ZGFmLWFjMDEtMzdjYS1hMTZlLWExYTYwNmVkZjViMQRwb3MDMwRzZWMDTWVkaWFCQ2Fyb3VzZWxNaXhlZExQQ0EEdmVyA2Q0NTk4YmMyLTZhMzctMTFlMi1iYmZjLTUxNWE4ZjNmYWZmYw--;_ylv=3 Yahoo has a section that allows you to start watching, so far I have to say that VW commercials are a dud. Reggie and Be Happy are not going to sell me a car. On the other Hand I have only watched 1 of the Audi comm…

My friends have a 2011/2012 Acadia without a Nav screen (they have what I think is called the black tie radio or something like that). They want to unpair a cell phone because apparently they have filled up the number of phones you can have paired. Is there a command they can speak to do this or something they can access via the radio's menu? They lost the owner's manual and online I seem to only find the newer ones with intellilink.

As a member of various groups and message boards, I've met quite a few people during my road trips. With "small world" experiences such as this one... http://www.chevyasylum.com/cort/1106/DSC07591r8_jpg.html ...I'm convinced that we are more of a community than just words on a screen on a particular message board. I'm STILL amazed at that connection ChevyTalk's DeeGee and I made that evening in Oklahoma City.... That written, I'm attempting an experiment. Last year, I started a thread asking people to state where all they have lived. For THIS experiment, I'm asking 3 additional questions: Where all did you go to school (HS and college) and when? Where all ha…

* Did your vehicle(s) see any milestones in 2011? Some of my cars reached "important milestones" this year: 1979 CC ... 150,000 miles 1976 MC ... 63,000 miles & over 20,000 miles since I bought it 1979 MC ... 146,000 miles & over 40,000 miles since I bought it 1981 MC ... 194,000 miles AND, FINALLY ... my "Car Time" & "Nephew Time" happened TOGETHER, the last day of my "car season", 11/05/2011, when my sister & brother-in-law brought my nephew to see my cars outside, Saturday morning! My "Car Time" was shorter this year, partly because of health issues & my ROAD TRIP in the middle of the summer...: https://picasaweb.google.com/knightfan26917/C…

I have a massive collection of sales brochures that I am gearing up to sell on Ebay very soon. The collection ends around 2004-ish and goes back into the 1930s for some brands. It is mostly US brands, but Asian and European brands are there too. Most of Acura and all of Suzuki were already given to friends, and Mustang was removed from the collection before I inherited it. If you have a specific year/make/model you want me to pull for you to set aside let me know. For long-time members here, I will share up to four for just the cost of packing and postage. The collection really encompasses everything and not just the halo cars. Even basic models like Neon, …

How can I find out about what's going on in the GM plant designated to build the next Colorado/Canyon? Is it currently in use, or is it closed for the transition to these new trucks? If it is in transition, how can I find out how much progress has been made? I am interested in knowing when these trucks will be shown in US trim, and when they are scheduled to go on sale.

My apologies but I'm not sure where to post this so please feel free to move it to classifieds if need be. Anyway, I would like to have a place to share coupons not just to our own site but to other automotive parts and accessories sites as well. If there are no objections I'll post the sale we're running today and keep up with the posting as I find more and we add new sales.

I wonder how long it will take for the negative PR wheels to start turning on this one... BARKHAMSTED, Conn. -- Fire officials suspect an electric hybrid car may have sparked an overnight blaze in a garage in Barkhamsted on Center Hill Road. Homeowner Storm Connors and his wife, Dee, said they awoke to the sound of a smoke alarm around 4 a.m. The couple said they have lived in the home for nearly 40 years. They built it and raised their children there, so when the flames took over their attached garage Thursday morning, burning it down to its beams, the couple started to panic. They said they were worried they were going to lose their home and the memories inside. "I w…

http://www.philly.com/philly/news/br...All=y#comments It's not often that Philadelphia police are called to jump-start a stolen auto case. Especially one four decades old. But thanks to their efforts, a Texas man has recovered a treasured convertible stolen in Philadelphia nearly 42 years ago. Bob Russell never gave up hope that his stolen 1967 Austin Healey would be found one day. Russell was a graduate student at Temple University in 1970 when he parked the English roadster at an apartment complex after a date with his future wife. When he went out to the lot the next morning, the Austin was gone. Because he was a cash-strapped student, it was a double whammy. He…

After seeing the New York Monte Carlo Club in action at their August gathering (Spiedie Fest, Binghamton NY) during my Nor'Easter Trek road trip, I'm not willing to "give up" on Chicagoland events. It seems, sometimes, that when we get together, people say, "We should do this more often" ... but that rarely happens. Perhaps it is time we make "more often" happen. After all, getting together with people IS the POINT.... While the MidSummer Chitown Gathering is done after 3 years due to fast-dwindling attendance (65 in 2008, 20 in 2009, 16 in 2010), let's try something different. I have ideas for "Meet'n'Greets": Saturday, October 16, 2010 ..."Fall Colors Drive" ...…

Yes, I'm ALREADY looking to my 2011 road trip. While I know about 2 car shows the last weekend of June 2011 in PA (GM Nationals, Carlisle; MC Nationals, York)...and the irony of the 2 shows being so close together with many people I know attending at least 1 of the 2 shows, it does not appear (at this point) that I will be able to go, due to lack of vacation time. Instead, since I have yet to travel to the northwest section of the United States during any of my road trips, that is where I'm heading.... In early June 2011, I may have the opportunity to travel with a Route 66 friend of mine along part of US Route 66 from Chicagoland to Amarillo TX. If that works out, th…
