There are two people spamming us via guest posting lately. Just report the posts and do not quote the post. I record the IP of the spammer and block them in the firewall. Each of these spammers has multiple IP addresses, so it will take time to grab them all, but eventually they will be totally blocked. Thanks, Drew

The tab on the top right of forum headings. It lets you either expand or collapse those you do not wish to view. Who cares about the Foreign Exchange? Not I! Same for the Powertrain tech stuff. Pffffft I love it.

Guys, When you know of a car show or a regular car cruise that will be happening in your area. Can you please make an entry in the calendar at the tab at the top? I'm going to start working on the ones I know. Include date/time/location and if possible a link for more information.

A tale of two lost automakers in search of their mojo. By Peter M. De Lorenzo (Posted 10/12, 12:00 p.m.) Detroit. No, I’m not going to write about the Chevrolet Volt this week in this column, although I do have a mini-rant in this week’s “On the Table” if you just have to read more about it. I’d rather talk about two Japanese car industry stalwarts – Toyota and Honda – and where they’ve been, where they are now and where they need to go given increasingly stiff competition from Ford and the Hyundai-KIA group, etc. Five years ago you could pretty much predict the tone of any article mentioning either Toyota or Honda, the two most successful Asian automakers of their tim…

I was wondering if it was at all possible to get a spell-checking feature incorporated into the forums. I hate having to second-guess my spelling and then have an ugly "edited by" message from fixing a simple spelling error. So how about it?

For some reason this afternoon, if I click on the 'Go to this post' button in an email notification from the forum in Gmail on Safari, it just opens a new tab on the Google site rather than the specific post in the forum. Works fine on Chrome. Weird...I haven't changed any settings on my Mac.

@Drew Dowdell I am using Opera, and have not had any issues till today. Any thread I am in and if someone else posts to it, I usually get the pop-up at the bottom of who posted and do you want to show the most current one. Now it just shows up with a circle to represent the person and a black box. Anyone else seeing this? Yes very weird that part of the info of who your quoting is blank too now.

Why There is No Edit Delay?

I love this forum software, except for one simple little annoyance. In other sites, there was perhaps a 1 min delay after your initial post, before recognizing any subsequent edit as an edit. Sometimes I catch a simple quick grammatical error or spelling or whatever, immediately after posting, and I correct it within the span of a min. Often just a few seconds, especially on a quick response. But no matter how quick you are, it gets noted as an edit with this software. Would it be possible to delay it by a minute? That allows you a quick fix, but little else. I see a lot of post edits, and I will hazard a guess that it is often just a post edit, rather than a c…

We enjoy posting Craigslist and eBay finds quite often on C&G, yet there is no dedicated place to post them. They simply get lumped into the lounge, and often get lost. I was wondering if it might be a good idea to have a dedicated section just for these sorts of posts. Something like For Sale Finds or something with a better title than that. Just a thought.

So after not being on the forum for about a day, I click the "view new content" button, and get... 3 results. I highly doubt the board has been that inactive in the last day. Is there a setting somewhere that decides how long after a new post something gets marked as not new anymore? Can we extend that to a few days instead of less than one? Not sure what I missed, or how to find what everyone's been talking about for the last day or so.

Audi, Mercedes forge ahead in China September 6, 2010 06:01 CET Print Email Reprints FRANKFURT (Reuters) -- Audi and Mercedes-Benz racked up more eye-popping sales in China in August, tapping into a rich vein of growth as living standards rise in the world's most populous nation. Audi said its China sales jumped by two-thirds to 22,350 units, bringing the total for the past eight months to nearly 152,800, a year-to-date gain of 63 percent. This puts China on track to eclipse Germany as Audi's single-largest market as domestic new-vehicle registrations amounted to 144,365 units through August, according to official data. Audi controls a much bigger slice …

Check out the forum card list. I finally finished all of it. Every brand has their logo and an example car, and if you scroll down to the social and tech sections, those have been updated too. In the next couple of weeks we will be restarting our weekly newsletter. You'll know it's coming when I've got about a week's worth of news posted. Beyond the backlog of news I need to catch up on, I have a 3 page list of OpEds to produce and at least 10 reviews to write. It's going to be a fun summer. I've created a new birthday cake and will put it in the e-mail for members' birthdays tomorrow. The garage will need to be rebuilt before the next major upgrade of th…

We've toyed with the idea of an automotive Wiki here for a number of years. Due to the way this website software works, I don't think a full reference wikipedia is feasable. However, what do you think about an automotive advertising wiki/database to collect current and vintage material? Let me know in the poll. If you have any specific comments or suggestions on it, sound off below.

It was necessary for me to make note that the post was deleted and that I disagreed. The was no reason for me or anyone else to say any more. It was just me saying "I know what you did and I saw you do it  " I realized it was done to try to keep things undercontrol. But I didnt care :) Necessary at the time, pointless now meant something at the time, no longer has any relevence :CG_all:

C&G's 25th birthday is coming up in August of this year and I wanted to give you some updates. I haven't been posting as much lately, but that doesn't mean I'm not here. I am working on a massive overhaul of the site ahead of our 25th birthday. Background: The Invision Community software we are on is V4. Support for V4 is tapering off rapidly as V5 was released over a year ago. V5 is a major change to how the software operates and as a result many of the plug-in authors who wrote software that I purchased for us have abandoned their projects. This has put me in the position of holding off on V5 until I can get certain things built or replaced. In the…

The Astrolab's ultra-lightweight monocoque chassis is built of carbon fiber and functions as a safety cell protecting the two inline occupants. Photovoltaic cells are covered by a unique nano-prismic film that is designed to concentrate solar energy. A 21-horsepower electric motor is all that is required to drive the 617-pound vehicle. Venturi says the vehicle can recharge itself while in motion and can store solar energy in its nickel-metal-hydride batteries. With a top speed of 75 mph and a range of 68 miles, the Astrolab is intended primarily as an inter-city commuter — albeit a fairly expensive one. Venturi says it is scheduled to deliver the first cars in January 2…

As most of you may have noticed, none of you have yet received your promised prizes for winning competitions. Please know you haven't been forgotten about. Our C&G account is very low because of recent purchases of spy photography as well as the big down payment we had to put down for two years of hosting. Because of this, I'm pretty much paying for these prizes out of my pocket. The prizes are - as somewhat stated - going to be small trinkets, things like keychains, toy diecasts, etc. Nothing like an actual car or something grandiose, but a little relevant prize nonetheless that we hope you'll appreciate. Rest assured again that winners will receive prizes! Just g…

I hope you are all enjoying the new look of the website. As I mentioned in the other thread, there will be another major update just ahead of the Chicago Auto Show. This update will change the structure of the site's article pages with the aim of making our news easier to find and modernizing our front page. One part of this change will go into effect as early as today - Currently, when we post an article, a topic is automatically created that contains the article as the first post plus the comments on that article. This is bad practice as far as the search engines are concerned as it creates duplicate content in two places on the same website. The change that I will …

As the auto show season quickly approaches us we here at C&G have realized we need a different way to update the site. With myself and Chris Pauwels (aka Crispey2k) being invited to an invite only event here in Metro Detroit for the NAIAS we have some pretty significant things in store for members and visitors alike of C&G. So, in light of the situation we have before us, Frank Donato aka z28luvr has done a fantastic job of keeping C&G's previous look and "morphing" it of sorts to a new front page that is far and away easier to update literally from any computer. In doing that, updates to the front page will be more frequent as myself, Z, F…

I would love to see an anti GM board somewhere on these forums. It would be interesting to read from people who had bad experiences with a GM product and won't buy a GM car anymore. They are out there. Sometimes someone is ticked off about a GM product and need a place to vent. GM needs to be aware of reasons why some people won't buy their products given that the company once had 50 percent of the market share two and one half decades ago. Anyone else interested in an ex-Gm, anti-GM, GM vent board??

Car News briefs: Cross Lander Ute expected this year AutoWeek | Published 01/17/06, 4:33 pm et Free pass for Cross Lander Importers of the inexpensive Romanian built Cross Lander 244X sport/ute won a three-year exemption from federal airbag requirements. Cross Lander won the exemption through May 2008 because the vehicle as initially configured weighed more than 5500 pounds, which would have excluded it from the requirement. However, an engine supply problem forced a powertrain switch that reduced the weight below the 5500-pound threshold. As a result, the company requested and won the airbag waiver and plans to move ahead with sales of the vehicle in the United Stat…

Why does the administrator delete a link that doesn't have anything more than a link? He seems to want you to discuss what is in the link in addition to posting a link. Why? Besides his forum..his rules? Is the DO NOT SPAM message an automatic link? Or does he personally E Mail everyone who posts a link without additional words/comments. Somehow to accuse someone of spam (for sending one link) seems a bit offensive. Thanks.

Is it possible to either remove or move the "Start New Topic" button at the bottom of each thread. It's right where I'm used to the "Reply" button being. I can't say how many times I've accidentally found myself in the wrong area, just about to start a new topic, when all I wanted to do was reply with quotes. It seems unnatural that the "Reply" button is offset to the left of the other. It's not a terribly big deal, but it's fairly annoying to find myself there. This is seemingly the only forum that I find myself having this issue with ever since the forums were moved to this new style.

IT'S TIME TO STOP AMERICA'S ADDICTION TO FOREIGN OIL America is in a hole and it's getting deeper every day. We import 70% of our oil at a cost of $700 billion a year - four times the annual cost of the Iraq war. I've been an oil man all my life, but this is one emergency we can't drill our way out of. But if we create a new renewable energy network, we can break our addiction to foreign oil. On January 20, 2009, a new President gets sworn in. If we're organized, we can convince Congress to make major changes towards cleaner, cheaper and domestic energy resources. Video article continues at link... http://www.pickensplan.com/

German luxury cars in high demand, but not in Germany 10:28 AM If you're interested in a German luxury car, you're probably not German. Business is booming for BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Porsche, a nice turnaround from a slow 2009,the Detroit News reports. Plants are so busy that some are apparently avoiding the end-of-the-year shutdown and running this week to try to catch up with demand. Demand, that is, in export markets like China, Brazil and the U.S. But not in Germany. There, in the fatherland, German luxury is still just that, a luxury. Sales slipped 25.2% in the first 11 months of the year. How much is demand up. Nine of the 10 top selling luxury nameplate…

Hey everyone, In light of the news that GM hasdivested its holdings in Fuji Heavy Industries - parent company of Subaru - the Subaru Forum once found under Foreign Exchange has been closed and deleted. All its current discussion topics have been relocated to the Asian Marques forum and merged with that forum's discussions. From now on out, all Subaru discussion will take place in the Asian Marques forum. Thanks! :CG_all: Brian Dreggors Administrator

Even though we have the "view new posts" option in the menu, I've found it over the years to be unreliable sometimes, as it can and will randomly clear out the most recent posts, so nothing shows up (like just now). What about if in addition to "view new posts" the site incorporated RSS, which is far more reliable? Just a thought.

I tried to reply to the Lambda minivan poll thread and couldn't. Is that normal? I voted in the poll from the front page, then linked into the thread. Not sure if my vote took or not.

Ater a rather long hiatus, Cheers and Gears' popular design competitions are back...with a vengence, by which I mean prizes. You read right, starting today, the winner of each competition will recieve a small prize that relates to the subject of the competition if possible. Don't expect a car or a vacation, but there will be a little reward for your outstanding efforts as well as a little motivation to keep that mouse or pencil busy. Entrants in the onging RWD Pontiac sketch and Camaro photoshop threads are eligible for prizes, so good luck and let's see your work! P.S. If you have anything of interest that you'd like to donate as a prize for a future competition, plea…

In case you didn't notice, I've decided to move to a blog-like methodology in posting news and articles on C&G instead of my old method of simply cutting and pasting the entire article. It takes a little longer to post news this way since I'm typing the titles and content myself but I feel it's a good way to add some originality in posting news here. I just wanted to gauge the opinions of the rest of the forum on this as I feel I will stick with this method from now on. So, thoughts?

Report: BMW, Mercedes experiment with upscale car-sharing by Zach Bowman (RSS feed) on Dec 29th 2010 at 6:39PM If you think that joining in on the car-sharing party means that you'll be stuck behind the wheel of a low-buck auto, prepare to be amazed. According to AutoWeek, both BMW and Mercedes-Benz are diving into the car-sharing world with programs designed to allow users to experience a slice of luxury without having to foot the hassles associated with car ownership. BMW on Demand will provide drivers with a 1 Series for as little as €16 per hour in Europe (around $21 USD/hr). Those wanting a little more room can opt for a 5 Series for the low price of €23/hr ($30/…

As you made have noticed on front page, Cheers & Gears now has a blog section (hooray!). Drew and I have posting stuff in there to get it somewhat going. I'm looking for some feedback and ideas with the blog I'm working on, The Mudpit. I have started two ongoing series on the blog. The first is called The Test Diaries which deals with the vehicles I get in for review. Its a place where I can go a little bit more in depth about the vehicles, give some thoughts and observations, and give a behind the scenes look in how a review gets done. The other series is tentatively called Random Links. It will appear every Sunday morning and provide a wide selection of stories, …

Very strange, but in the last few days, I've noticed I can't post or reply to posts from my phone. I'm logged into the site on Safari, but when I submit a post or reply post nothing is posted. No error I'm seeing on the screen either. Just doesn't post. Works fine on Safari on my Mac.

With the changing of the guard, so to speak, YellowJacket and myself, who are now in charge of the design competition section of C&G have some changes we'd like to announce. Change #1 Fo the time being we are going to have the sketch and chopping competitions linked togther. By this we mean that they will share a common objective, as opposed to different ones. For example: Both compeitions will focus on designing a new car for flagship model for Buick. This way things will, ideally be more simple for us, and give designers who want to participate but aren't choppers, the ability to sketch their design out, and vise versa. This will begin with the next competitio…

Don't know exactly how to phrase this civilly, but keeping topics and sub-topics off limits for non-members is only gonna screw C&G up the rear. I've done research. Get with the program or lose it.

The hot topic sidebars seem to update very, very slowly. The articles about a new Saturn logo and the Camaro test-drive were just posted today, but they were on the GMi ticker about 5 days ago. It just seems like this could be updated more regularly.

Small cars are back in action Japanese models to hit the market starting in March February 16, 2006 BY MATT NAUMAN KNIGHT RIDDER NEWSPAPERS Forget Pinto, Vega and Gremlin. Get ready to learn Yaris, Fit and Versa. Not since the oil tensions of the 1970s have subcompact cars gotten such attention. The three big Japanese automakers will introduce new small cars this year, and the best-selling model, the Chevrolet Aveo, gets a redesign soon. Researcher J.D. Power and Associates expects sales of the smallest, cheapest cars to zoom 94% from 2005 to 2010 as new vehicles hit the market. "I think you can say they're back," said Mike Dawson, manager of global forecasting a…

Is the Cheers and Gears site or its hosting company being "protected" by OpenDNS? I ask because I keep getting a "Phishing Site Blocked" message... then a few minutes later, it clears. Its happening when I use TW Cable... but I doubt they are providing it, to the best of my knowledge. In fact, I don't use their DNS... I use my own DNS server I built myself at a remote co-location site. I also doubt that the local antivirus and tools or whatever is doing the blocking... I work in this industry... not a novice. Anyway, I thought I'd bring it up to see if anyone else is having this problem. I suspect that perhaps one of the ads is triggering this blockage... but it would…

To better serve our members in keeping up-to-date with all things GM especially in regards to future vehicle development, I'd like to take this time to announce two new forums on the C&G website. The Volt-ometer subforum located within the Chevrolet Forum will chronicle the development of this amazing new vehicle from concept to production. In the same way the Camaro Center represented the emotion surrounding the rebirth of Chevy's muscle car, we hope The Volt-ometer will foster the same spirit and enthusiasm for this truly revolutionary vehicle. All other GM developments in biodiesel, ethanol, fuel cells, and related demonstration vehicles will be chronicled i…

But 16 years later, the auto industry is once again the driving force for the town's 70,000 residents. France's PSA Peugeot Citroen will start production at a state-of-the-art assembly plant next year, eventually creating more than 5,000 jobs. We have a lot of new members lately, but a large number of the new members know each other from another site. That said, I want to remind everyone both old and new about the etiquette around here. Try to leave the baggage of the old site on the old site. We're here to discuss and argue about cars.... that is the whole point of the site. Different people have different ideas of cars. Different people have different opinions of cars. Different people have favorite brands. We also tend to be very fact based here. Back up your arguments with links and references. We have a large archive of sales data at your disposal to make your point. Feel free to attack i…
