How to feed the world: Brazil's agricultural miracle Economist THE world is planting a vigorous new crop: “agro-pessimism”, or fear that mankind will not be able to feed itself except by wrecking the environment. The current harvest of this variety of whine will be a bumper one. Natural disasters—fire in Russia and flood in Pakistan, which are the world’s fifth- and eighth-largest wheat producers respectively—have added a Biblical colouring to an unfolding fear of famine. By 2050 world grain output will have to rise by half and meat production must double to meet demand. And that cannot easily happen because growth in grain yields is flattening out, there is little extr…

Trivia #1- This was a very ambitious father son project...and it has been used by every made of auto, from Ford to Ferrari. Father died at the beginning of the project, son was almost killed by the project....but yet every type of auto uses this THING they developed together. If your thinking along the lines of Piston, you are wrong, as the Mazda RX-7 and RX-8 use this, and they don't have pistons...if your thinking steering wheel the 1903 Curved dash Olds used a tiller and used this..so steering wheel and windshield fail. This was used by the 1962 Grand Prix and 64 Bonneville of Balthazars fantasy, the SS El Camino of Camino's fantasy, the GMC truck in Rogers fantasy…

What soundcard would you recommend for a 5.1 channel system? It does not matter whether it is PCI or PCI-E. I have read good reviews about Asus Xonar Essence XTX. but also have read that it is geared for headphones and some have experienced problems with 5.1 digital sound. Can a 5.1 channel system be "converted" to a 7.1 by adding two speakers?

No joke. Hawking (and many, many others) have gone public in their concern about combining AI drones and weapons: "In an open letter posted online Monday, Stephen Hawking, Elon Musk and hundreds of other scientists warn humanity about such a dystopian military future. Like something from a Hollywood blockbuster, the scientists caution that only a ban on autonomous weapons now can stop an arms race that could see killer robots wipe out humans tomorrow. 'If any major military power pushes ahead with AI weapon development, a global arms race is virtually inevitable,' the letter says, 'and the endpoint of this technological trajectory is obvious: autonomous weapons will be…

http://public.fotki.com/robertwadehall/az-auto-auctions-2014/ I went to the Gooding & Company auction on Friday and Barrett-Jackson Friday and Saturday, took a few pics at the link above. Saw quite a few interesting cars, incl. a McLaren F1 LM (first I'd ever seen in person), 1998 Ferrari F1 car, various '50s-60s Ferraris, Maseratis, Lancias, Alfas, and countless muscle cars and '50s-70s American iron. Fun weekend. At the GM exhibit saw the '14 Camaro Z/28 in matte pearl white (Rick Hendrick bought it for $650k or so), saw and sat in a silver Chevy SS and dark red '14 CTS V-sport....really liked the SS and CTS in person, look better than in photos.

Mike Wood’s Duramax-powered ’04 Ford Mustang The thought of a big-cubic-inch diesel engine in a light car seems to excite just about everyone, but perhaps the most impressive swap of the decade has been Mike Wood’s Duramax-powered Mustang. When we featured the car in 2008, it was running low 10s in the quarter-mile and achieving more than 30 mpg at Hot Rod magazine’s Drag Week—and that was just the start. Later, a Gear Vendors Overdrive was added to the 4L80E transmission, the engine was hopped up a bit more and given larger doses of nitrous, and the entire combination was fine-tuned. Then Mike went racing. Although not as publicized as they perhaps should have been, …

recently there was a show on the national geographic or animal planet cant remember which, about massive animal extinction. it was about how a "super volcano" on pangea in the area of siberia errupted for like 250-500,000 years or something. anyway. it was talking about how at first it was no big deal, then life got worse for the animals on land. the water dwelling creatures didnt have any problems until the "global warming" from the volcanic gasses and trapping of the suns rays started kicking in. the water temps started rising and water has a lower oxygen content the warmer it gets. the water creatures began to die and so anaerobic bacteria started taking over in the wa…

The Economics of Immigration Are Not What You Think NDN Waves of new immigrants often spark economic anxiety and cultural discomfort, as well as occasional violence and wide-net crackdowns, on the Arizona model. Even here, a nation comprised almost entirely of immigrants and their descendants, we’ve seen these reactions not only in recent times but also a century ago, when waves of poor immigrants from Europe arrived here. With a hundred years’ distance, however, we can now see that those early waves of immigration were generally associated not with economic dislocation and national decline, but with extraordinary economic boom times and America’s emergence as the world…

Last weekend my closest group of friends drove downtown and went to the St. Louis Auto Show. It had been a handful of years since I last went so it was set up a little different not in a bad way just different. Well, first of all I volunteered to drive because there were 5 of us and we thought 2 cars and paying 2 cars to park was unnecessary so we all packed into my Escape. I am by far the smallest of the guys who went. Me: 5'8" 180lbs, Guy1: 6' 240lbs, Guys2-4: 5' 8-10" weighing from 250-290. Guys2-4 are twins and their dad.. Guy was the first draftee from Oklahoma in the Korean war.... He starred opposite Sally field in a major motion picture... Give the name of the Racing movie, the production that wrecked all of those Pontiacs...and the movie he made with SallyField. Good luck, you should get this one easily....

Ever wonder how they make the templates fo PPF kits? Probably not but in case you have I just came across a great expose on one way that companies like Xpel get their templates for precut paint protection film. At first it seemed like a low-tech, labor-intensive way to go about it but the more I think about it the more I realize it couldn't be any other way. Check out my quick summary here and there is a link in the blog post to the complete expose on the TintDude form: http://blog.rvinyl.com/2014/03/27/how-to-make-a-paint-protection-kit-an-insiders-look-at-precut-ppf-kits/

From 1957 through 1991, the Mercury Colony Park reigned supreme as the biggest and sometimes most expensive vehicle in the Mercury lineup. During the early years it was a hybrid of sorts, often sharing its platform with whatever full-size Ford sedan was in production at the time while occasionally plucking engines or suspensions from the Lincoln catalog. After 1978, the Colony Park's fate was forever tied to its Marquis sedan brother and the Ford cousins, no longer did it have equipment ties to Lincoln. For 1992, the big Ford and Mercury sedans were redesigned to the new Aero look introduced ten years earlier on the Tempo/Topaz and made into a best seller with the 198…

First you'll watch what the route Ford decided to take when they pussied out. Then you'll see the approach that would have been the clear winner. Honestly, I think Fo…

Thanks to Drew, I had overlooked the web page that Jeep has on their powertrain systems. http://www.jeep.com/en/4x4/ Now that we have this great resource, I need some help in figuring out the pecking order of where things line up or are similar. In August, I wrote about Anthony Graber, who was charged with "wiretapping" after posting a police encounter on YouTube. This week, Harford County Circuit Judge Emory A. Plitt, Jr. threw out the charge for wiretapping, saying there was no expectation of privacy in this case. "In this rapid information technology era in which we live, it is hard to imagine that either an offender or an officer would have any reasonable expectation of privacy with regard to what is said between them in a traffic stop on a public highway," Plitt wrote. '...NASA’s Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array, called NuSTAR, has taken its first glimpse of our galaxy’s supermassive black hole, thanks to a recent flare-up at the galactic core. NuSTAR, a state-of-the-art, space-based X-ray telescope, was aimed at Sagittarius A*, a compact radio source identified as a black hole, for two days in July. The goal was to better understand just what makes our galaxy's central black hole so different from others. Compared to other galaxies, the Milky Way’s black hole is relatively calm. While other supermassive black holes devour gas and stars around them, releasing large amounts of energy in the process, ours only seems to have the occ…

Anyways, with the holidays right around the corner, surely an increased number of stores will be offering interest free financing (if paid in 60 days, 6 months, 12 months, etc.). Chronicling the Death of a Car Have you ever stopped and thought about what a car goes through at the end of its life? It's a very sad and to be honest very brutal fate that awaits a vehicle that provided its owners years of service, usually asking little in return. To most people a car is nothing more than an appliance, something that is merely cast away like an cell phone. To car enthusiasts however, who think of a car as more than the sum of its parts, a machine which can have passion and soul, and something that is part of your family, the following may be difficult to read. Car and Driver recently sent a tired, old BMW 325i to meet it fate, likening the wrecker t…

SEMA Action Network is a non-profit organization that works to promote legislative solutions for classic car owners and members of the hobby. If you are a part of the hobby or just enjoy preserving this part of our history, you should take part and join. It's free and it merely updates you on laws/propositions that either promote or threaten the hobby. I recently agreed to take the SEMA SAN Challenge to try and win the trip to this year's SEMA show. If you join, kindly put my name (Josh Leatherwood) under the "How Did You Hear About Us?" question. My true loyalty lies in passion for the hobby. So even if you don't like me and don't want to put down my name (which, I don…

From my blog: If the current recession has hit Germany, it doesn’t show. Walking around Cologne there is construction everywhere. New shops going up everywhere. The stores are busy and bustling. Germany has been careful to not outsource it’s labor force to foreign markets as much as we have in the US. If German companies need cheap labor, they set up shop in the former East German territories. This way, at least the GDP stays local to Germany’s economy. Why can’t we do the same thing here? Sure, we couldn’t pay the minimal wages we pay Chinese prison laborers to sew soccer balls with their teeth, but I’m sure there are willing laborers in states like West Virginia, A…

Today is June 1st and the beginning of Pride Month. I feel like I can consider all of you my friends and I wanted to thank you for being allies through all the years we have been coming here. This website will be 21 years old in August this year. I've been at the helm for most of the time it has been around and have never been not open about who I am. Car culture has been a historically toxic, "macho" realm with no room for the LGBT crowd. I am proud that I am able to be who I am with you guys while some other sites have LGBT leadership that is unable to be themselves publicly. Cheers to all of you for being awesome. So in honor of Pride month, whether y…

Who's (on) First? It seems there's a minor collective historical shift going on. The Buick Motor Company was incorporated May 19, 1903. The Cadillac Automobile Company was incorporated August 22, 1902. With the demise of Oldsmobile, the previous longest manufacturer in the U.S., Wikipedia (and other) sources have reshuffled the criteria a bit. Wikipedia currently says this in the Cadillac entry : >>"Cadillac is currently the second oldest American automobile manufacturer behind Buick and among the oldest automobile brands in the world. Depending on how one chooses to measure, Cadillac is arguably older than Buick. Since GM has discontinued offering Oldsmobil…

In Afghanistan, a car for the masses By David Nakamura Washington Post Foreign Service Friday, August 27, 2010 IN KABUL Afghanistan, graveyard of empires - and Toyota Corollas. If this war-torn nation of 29 million is a magnet for foreign occupying forces that never seem to leave, it is also the land where old Corollas from around the globe come to die. According to some car dealers in Kabul, 90 percent of passenger vehicles on the increasingly congested roads of the capital are Corollas, some more than 20 years old, with 200,000 miles on their odometers, still chugging along over rocky dirt roads. "Here is the museum of old cars," snorted Abdul Qahar Nadi, manag…

Arizona's Immigration Mistake Wall Street Journal I have spent over 50 years in the law-enforcement profession in the Tucson community, the past 30 of which I have served as sheriff. I have seen relations between our community and law enforcement personnel shift with the times: sometimes challenged when the actions of a few police officers cross the line, and often improving when there is a sense of partnership. But in the past few weeks Arizona became a model for the rest of the country of what not to do. The immigration reform law that was signed by Gov. Jan Brewer on April 23 effectively requires that immigrants be able to prove their legal presence in the state of…

This weekend, two vinyl-philes (my buddy and I) will pack themselves into a Nissan Juke and hit seven great record stores in three states in about 12 hours! Not only that, but they'll spend quality time in each store and, most likely, pick up a few records along the way! Check in with Automotive Traveler's Facebook page (www.facebook.com/AutomotiveTraveler) and follow me on Twitter (www.twitter.com/samfiorani) for constant updates! Perhaps we'll even see you along the road. The snow's on the way, but the Nissan Juke and its all-wheel drive are ready. We'll be hitting the Record Connection when they open their doors in the morning. After that, we'll be heading over to AKA…

Before I head to some cesspool like Yahoo Answers, I figured I'd try my question here. I'm working on a wheel safety booklet for a heavy equipment company. If a worker fails to deflate a tire before maintenance, it can explode and send them flying a considerable distance - in some cases, hundreds of feet. I have a chart of commonly used tire sizes, each with a 'energy ft/lbs' figure. For example, a 40 x 57 tire has 807,218 ft/lbs of energy when cold. What I'd like to know, is if anyone here knows if I can parallel these numbers with something a lay-person can understand. For example, if I can state something along the lines of a certain tire possessing the …
