This year I am taking part in https://www.facebook.com/gentlemansride to raise funds and awareness for men's health and prostate cancer on behalf of the Movember foundation. Prostate cancer affects more men than any other cancer, taking the lives of 307,000 men each year. That number is surpassed by 500,000 men dying from suicide. That's 807,000 men every year. This is a number that must change. Please reach out and give what you can; help support me on my ride by going to https://gfolk.me/DrewDowdell and donating. Thank you, Drew.

https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/save-johnson-valley-ohv-area-be-fiscally-responsible-stop-29-palms-marine-base-expansion-keep-public/5r0C7Xw4 Trust me, I'm not against the military or the Marines (my step-son is currently undergoing basic training with them right now!). But I don't agree with their wanting to take away 147,000 acres of open space that is used for off-highway vehicle (OHV) recreation. If you agree, please sign the online petition at the link above (registration is required).

"Finding trust & love is not always easy to make" __ Yael Naim __ 'New Soul' After experiencing a roller coaster last weekend of July, I decided to post 1 last "commentary". We live in a very small world. And, we don't always realize it. Fellow "roadie" Denny G & I have had several "misses" meeting in person, including a stop in Amarillo TX in 2011. We were in that town the SAME night, but didn't realize it until a day or so later while comparing "current road trip" notes. So, when Denny told me about his Route 66 trip this year, we were determined to meet. Before he left, we briefly discussed the possibility of me driving with him to St Louis, Friday, 07/2…

I've posted pics of old roads (Route 66, the Lincoln Highway, etc.) and pictures of the "road ahead" from various trips and drives. But, one type of road I had not taken pictures of until December 18, 2010, is a BRAND NEW road. I'm not talking just new concrete/pavement ... I'm talking ... brand new ... as in NO pavement had been in that spot previously. For this photo shoot, the "Stearns Road Project": http://www.stearnsroad.com/ Stearns Road was extended from IL RT 25 to Randall Rd, providing a much-needed 4-lane bridge across the Fox River between Elgin and St Charles. The only other bridge crossing the Fox River between St Charles (IL RT 64) and Elgin (US RT 20)…

I'm not much of a wine drinker, but I know people who are. My tastes lean toward dessert wines that taste more like candy than proper wine. I do, however, enjoy a good wine tour. Finding local craftspeople who can turn grapes into interesting potent potables, hearing their stories, and drinking their concoctions is a great day out. In order to share this experience, I wrote a little piece on our latest wine tour. Not many people think of Pennsylvania as wine country (or even HAVING a wine industry), but it exists. Take a few minutes to read the whole article below and post some comments here on your thoughts. Even if you're not near this region, I'm sure there are winer…

Had a nice Memorial Day weekend moment yesterday. We fixed a 1997 Oldsmobile involved in a minor accident, and the customer came in to pick it up. He had just come from a stress test, 87 years old. He gave us a muscleman pose as he told us he passed, surprised he was still here, he said. He was happy to get his car back. He had been drafted in 1945, near the end of the war. He was slated to ship off to Japan for a ground invasion when the decision was made to try the bomb instead. The bombs worked, as we know, and possibly thousands of young lives were saved. So, instead of summer gear, they were given overcoats... off to Italy instead. He saw the world. He was spared. He…

I haven't seen many movies lately but the last one I saw was "The Commuter." Blame it on bargain Tuesday. I looked at the reviews and they were lukewarm. I went to see it and enjoyed it. It was sort of like "Unstoppable" (2010). It was probably also like "The Taking of Pelham 123," which I never saw. Has anyone seen it? The review said that it was predictable. I disagree. I didn't know who it could be until the very end. In fact, it's one of those movies you have to analyze backwards, sort of like film noir "Body Heat," where the pieces all make sense when looked at in the rear view mirror. If you've seen it, did you feel that more fleshing out of the d…

Hi there. It has been some time since I last posted in this section of the forum. Sure I have been writing the odd review here and there, but other than that, I have been a bit of a ghost. Popping in and our in case of some incident that needs to be addressed. So what has been going on? Aside from 2020 being well a 'landfill fire' (and that's me being family friendly), I've been quite busy with work. Since mid-April, I have been on three different projects which have taken up a lot of my time and mental energy. Add this on top of working from home since March with no real outside interaction, COVID-19, and other personal issues, and you get a recipe of feeling very d…

It was another unforgettable year that we would like to forget. It started with an assault on democracy in the nation’s Capitol by deluded and enabled followers of the previous occupant of the White House. A new President was sworn in with the first female and person of color as Vice President. In May the U.S. started the quick removal of troops from Afghanistan, which was the longest war in U.S. history, at 20 years. The immediate takeover of the country by the Taliban showed that the Afghan National Army was incapable and probably would never have been capable to keep the government in power. In June, 98 lives were lost in the coastal town of Surfside, Flor…

* We tell others to "never say never", but then use the phrase "never forget" for 09/11/2001! Perhaps "always remember" is a bit more appropriate for Patriot Day & other things? I’ve said it’s more about people than anything, but starting to wonder.... Until a few weeks ago, it had been ~1 year & 3 months since I posted. I’ve been without a job for over 2.5 years & without income for a year (unemployment ended September 2013). I was denied disability; I am now on Medicaid, but cannot see my doctors. So relaxing to be out driving in the snow so early in the morning in a vehicle that can make it through, no worries. Ended up in BFE again (not the same place as before, but still VERY country, with lots of hills and winding roads.) Snowy fun!

How Immigration Crackdowns Backfire Reason Arizona legislators are fed up with being terrorized by illegal immigrants, and they have passed a law to get tough. Under the measure, passed this week and sent to the governor, police would have to stop and question anyone they suspect of being in this country without legal authorization. The bill passed after the fatal shooting of Robert Krentz, a 58-year-old rancher whose killer apparently entered illegally from Mexico. Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu says police are also under siege: "We've had numerous officers that have been killed by illegal immigrants in Arizona." Even Sen. John McCain, once a supporter of immigratio…

So we're all moved into the new server, but part of the process didn't fully work and I need your help to track some things down. The URLs for a number of pictures didn't update to their new locations. Your job, when you spot one of these, is to use the Report Post/Article/Gallery button so I can fix it. If we get a lot of these, I'll think up of some prize for the person with the most reports. It can be missing emojis, missing pictures in threads, or missing pictures in an article. The fix for most of these is super simple, but I need to crowdsource finding them. I'm leaving the 2025 Acura MDX and 2025 Infiniti QX80 articles up as an example to look at. Bu…

Woman finds 'stolen' Audi in neighbor's garage 6 hours ago BERLIN — An Audi sedan written off by an elderly German woman as stolen two years ago has resurfaced — in her neighbor's garage beneath a thick layer of dust. Police said Thursday the 82-year-old from the northern city of Hildesheim took the car in for repairs two years ago and had the mechanics drive it back to her house and park it in her garage. She got the keys and papers from her mailbox, but when she went to get the car it was nowhere to be found. So she reported it stolen. Fast forward to Wednesday when her neighbor went to clean up his unused garage so it could be rented. He found the car under "a …

Pretty simple, I'll post a line from a song, whoever figures it out names the song and artist, then they post their own lyrics for someone else to figure out. You don't have to make it crazy easy, but maybe try not to make it something too obscure so people at least have a chance to figure it out. I think that about covers it, so, to get it started: There, are stars, in the southern sky, and if ever, you decide, you should go, there is a taste, of time sweetened honey, down.........

US OKs $150 million to help Yemen fight terrorism WASHINGTON – The Pentagon has approved $150 million in military assistance to Yemen, the country where al-Qaida linked militants planned the failed Christmas Day airliner attack over Detroit, The Associated Press has learned. Administration officials said the money was approved Friday by Defense Secretary Robert Gates and is more than double the amount of U.S. aid to Yemen last year. It will pay for military equipment and training for Yemeni forces. U.S. officials worry that Yemen is becoming the next significant terrorist staging ground, amid ongoing signs that lower-level al-Qaida operatives have been moving into the …

It has been about six months since I have announced that I would stepping away from my full-time role as a staff writer for a job with JATO Dynamics as a specs researcher. Most of my work deals with taking data from automakers on various vehicles and putting into our systems. That may seem tedious (and there makes and model where it is that), but I am oddly enjoying. 2022 is another year from which everyone is ready to move on. The world continued to recover from the impacts of COVID and is learning to live with the variants. Mass shootings unfortunately remain common, though this past year had particularly shocking events at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas and an LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado. Inflation was rampant, with high gas prices due to the conflict in Ukraine affecting the cost of almost everything. Putin's misguided war in Ukraine has cost tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of lives of both military and civilians. Cryptocurrencies crashed, and home mortgage interest rates doubled as the Fed tried t…

Last night I saw a commercial for the Mazda 6, and it seemed as though one of their biggest triumphs with the car was that they were able to package six (6!) airbags into it. I giggled a bit as I told my parents that the smaller Cruze has 10 standard.

I decided I'm going to start a video blog of what I'm doing with all of these apartments. Here's the first, rough video from today. This is one that has gotten the most changes. Four walls removed, converted to an open floor plan, getting an all new tile bath/shower and a new kitchen, refinishing the hardwood floors throughout. Plus this one has a two car garage attached.

Check this out: The quote that makes this post worthy: The Library of Congress estimated that (of his record collection just from 1948 to 1967) only 17% of it is available for sale to the public in ANY media. That's staggering. I surfed onto this site where the video was embedded. http://jumpwithjoey....01_archive.html

2024 was a Presidential election year, with many twists and turns, including assassination attempts and the resultant rare occurrence of a former President getting reelected, let alone one who was impeached twice and had felony convictions. The CEO of Tesla decided to endorse the former President and made a $250 million investment in the endeavor. This CEO also supports the end of the $7,500 EV tax credit not for the health of the EV market but because he believes Tesla would have a competitive advantage over other makers. Despite having obvious conflicts of interest and being the beneficiary of hundreds of millions of dollars in subsidies, he is heading an unofficial …

Found on Craigslist - This 1980 Camaro Mustang GTO Chevelle Charger Honda Prototype. What looks to us to be a thrown together combination of spare parts from the garage can be yours for the low price of $1,234 Canadian. That's right... 1,2,3,4. The owner believes it to be equipped with a rear-engine 450 (cc? ci? horsepower?) twin-cylinder. He also believes that keyword stuffing his ad's title will help interest some shopper looking for a Camaro or Chevelle into spending money on this. Three-wheeled cars have a long and interesting history. A new entry, Elio Motors, is in the start up stages using one of the closed manufacturing plants that GM sold during the bankruptcy…

No, it wasn't a very big show, about 50-70 cars total. Many were scared away by the threat of rain. Two weeks ago my friend bought a worked 1973 Monte Carlo and entered it in the show. He ended up placing 3rd in the Modified class. Pics

You might have seen THIS on Jalopnik, but I thought it was neat enough to report here. Oddly, I get a a British Blues Brothers vibe from some parts of the run. But the real reason I thought it was neat... while driving through London with their completely uninteresting vehicles, what do you see around 14:08? Yeah, an early white second gen Trans Am. I've heard there are only a handful of these in the UK, it was kinda interesting to see one captured during this high speed chase.

Came across this at my local Caddy dealership. According to Brad my sales guy, the old man traded it in along with his Allante to get a single new auto for him and his wife since he can not drive anymore. They got an SRX, but the dealership has two nice clean auto's to sell. 1981 Chevy C-10 Pickup with custom engine http://www.dougscadillac.com/VehicleDetails/used-1981-Chevrolet-C10-Short_Bed_Pick_Up_350-Shoreline-WA/2762157743 1993 Cadillac Allante http://www.dougscadillac.com/VehicleDetails/used-1993-Cadillac-Allante%27-2dr_Coupe_Convertible-Shoreline-WA/2623191303

I think the detail on this thing is amazing! Shannon Goff was born in Detroit, a trigger for her lifelong interest in the evolution of transportation. Captivated by her grandfather’s 1979 Lincoln Continental Mark V, she had considered making the car many times, but shied away due its massive size. “Miles to Empty” brings this longtime dream to reality, a sculpture that is her most ambitious project to date. The work pays homage to her grandfather and hometown while dually reexamining themes inherent to the Motor City like the American obsessions of luxury and convenience. * Included a note about my pacemaker replacement (Wednesday, 03/25/2015) on my website, with this engine image: http://www.oldcarsstronghearts.com/2015/03/25/wednesday-ratio-10/ Adding to that: I was awake enough Wednesday evening to watch “CHiPs” & a couple new shows, but was in & out of sleep otherwise. Today (Thursday), I’ve rested & watched TV, including an hour private investigating in California, an hour sleuthing in Maine, an hour housekeeping in Pittsburgh PA, then back to California to patrol the highways & now NCAA March Madness. [if only road tripping were really THAT easy!] Have a list of things to do, but not ready to tackle much. My lef…

This Friday, a long chapter in the history of Volkswagen AG ends when the last air-cooled motor will be hoisted into a vehicle seen as a museum piece almost everywhere else across the planet. VW is being forced to change the minivan's historic rear-mounted engine because of a new Brazilian emissions law to reduce pollution that goes into effect in 2006. Production {of the van] will continue next year, but the van known here as the "Kombi" will get a new water-cooled motor and a radiator for the first time. The switch marks the last hurrah for the simple engine developed in the 1930s by famed German engineer Ferdinand Porsche, his key element of a "…

* After my 11/11/2011 open heart surgery, I drove for the first time, 12/15/2011. I had a rush of excitement when I pulled my 1979 Caprice Classic out of the garage, where it had been with my 5 MCs. As I drove down the road, my thoughts turned to other cars, particularly ones I'd love to purchase... ...mid-late 1970s LTD/Thunderbird ...1975 Caprice Classic convertible ...1976 Caprice Classic sedan ...1989 Caprice Classic sedan ...1987 MC SS Aerocoupe ...2011 Dodge Charger ...& too many others.... Then, during that same drive, I wondered what it'd be like to have KITT, KARR, Herbie, the General Lee, Jim Rockford's Pontiac, Starsky & Hutch's Torino, &…
