Good news out of Frankfurt today—according to a new report in Automotive News, BMW’s forthcoming 1-series coupe will nose in under $30,000 when it arrives in the U.S. this spring. While that’s hardly discount stuff, the rear-drive, entry-level offering has enthusiasts salivating, because even the entry-level 128i will arrive packing a 230-horsepower inline-6. The even more compelling 300-horsepower 135i will command closer to $35k as a starting point, but that should still be enough to spirit away a few sales from Audi A3 and Volvo C30 intenders. BMW’s CEO, Tom Purves, also thinks that the MSRP will be low enough that it will cajole “customers from the likes of Honda, To…

Bumper-to-Bumper Free maintenance remains core part of BMW's strategy By DIANA T. KURLYKO | AUTOMOTIVE NEWS AutoWeek | Published 02/12/06, 3:16 pm et A BMW 3 series snakes down the highway, flaunting its new body in the TV commercial. But performance and styling aren't the hook. At the very end of the commercial, a message flashes: free maintenance for four years/50,000 miles. It's the most generous package in the industry, including oil changes, windshield wipers, brakes - you name it, except for tires. BMW is the only manufacturer still offering bumper-to-bumper free maintenance. It's not about to change, because "free maintenance is part of our strategy…

Tuner Special: Hamann Rocks BMW M6 Date posted: 02-17-2006 LAUPHEIM, Germany — Hamann Automobile Technik + Design, the BMW tuning specialist, has further tapped the latent potential in the already sensational M6 coupe, boosting engine output and performance to new heights. Hamann offers three different engine tuning options on the car's 5.0-liter V10, which, in stock trim, delivers 500 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph. At the first tuning level, Hamann upgrades the wheels and tires, and removes the speed governor, which lifts top speed to 185 to 200 mph. At the second stage, Hamann also reprograms the engine comp…

Hitless: BMW Gets "Death Penalty" From Search Engine Date posted: 02-09-2006 MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Internet search giant Google temporarily removed BMW's main German Web site, bmw.de, and all its subsites, after the German carmaker was caught cheating to get more "hits" from searchers. Back in 2003, Harvard Law School professor Jonathan Zittrain coined the phrase "Google Death Penalty" to describe the company's method of removing those who break the Internet social contract from its search functions. This week, bmw.de learned what that penalty feels like; the automaker's site was briefly removed from Google, and its all-important PageRank was dropped to 0. Reportedl…

Inside Info: BMW Sportvan Sportvans are the next big thing at BMW. In 2005, the Bavarian automaker confirmed it would build a sportvan/MPV/wagon based on the X5 (itself based on the 5 Series). The vehicle was developed under the working title RFK, but we believe it'll be called F5. Now comes word that BMW is planning a similar vehicle based off its 3 Series-called F3-though the company's board hasn't given it the green light, yet. BMW is expected to launch the F5 in mid-2009 and, if approved, the F3 the following year. Motor Trend

Inside Info: BMW X6 German magazine Auto Zeitung has spilled more information on BMW’s upcoming X6 Coupe, a sporty version of the hugely successful X5. Scheduled for release in the beginning of 2008, the X6 will share the same four-door coupe styling made so popular by the CLS, but will do so on the same platform as the X5. Being a “fun SUV,” the X6 will come with a more driver-oriented interior and range of powerful engines. The relationship between the X5 and X6 will be the same as the 5 and 6-series – more sporting and upscale. BMW’s goal is to target the Porsche Cayenne by having a vehicle that is both more fun to drive and cheaper to boot. The X6 will get engines …

"Happiness isn't around the corner. Happiness IS the corner." So said an ad for BMW created in 1996 for the Z3. In the TV version (see the video at the very bottom after the break), a heavy-metal music track underlined the idea, which was carried over to magazines and billboards. I'm reminded of that ad, one of the more perfect expressions of the BMW brand I have ever seen, this week as I take in the Bavarian automaker's plan to launch vehicles powered by "alternative" powertrains under the "i" sub-brand: as in, yes, iPad, iPod, iMac. So far, I'm not hearing about Apple filing trademark infractions. It is, I believe, also "i" as i Isetta, the last time BMW brought out a …

The chatter about BMW acquiring Volvo from Ford started in earnest a couple of weeks ago, and has gotten much louder in the last few days. Neither BMW nor Ford will comment, but apparently sources within Ford, BMW, and Volvo have confirmed to various news entities that Volvo is in play, but there is no consensus on where Volvo will go when it leaves Ford. Some say Volvo will go to BMW, some say it’s going to a private-equity firm, a la Chrysler/Cerberus, and some point to VW as a dark-horse contender for the company. And, of course, it may not go anywhere. Although it’s worth pointing out that we predicted in December 2006 that Ford would certainly sell Jaguar, Aston Mar…

More 3-Series News: Possible Diesel & Confusion Over The Wagon William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com October 19, 2011 BMW could be bringing a sequel to their previous 3-Series diesel. Inside Line was speaking with BMW's head of sales and marketing, Ian Robertson. Robertson said "the diesel infrastructure is progressing well in the U.S.," and "the negative historical baggage associated with diesel is being removed." "The X5 diesel is doing well in the U.S.. From month-to-month it accounts for a third or half of sales. It is still an issue of getting bums on seats. U.S. buyers are still astonished by how good a modern diesel is." said Ro…

More BMW 1-Series Cabrio Spy Photos by Andreas Conradt 02-20-2006 Entry-level cabrio with slim canvas top Here are more pictures of the BMW 1-series Cabrio. We snapped it testing close to the firm’s new test-centre in northern Sweden. BMW-enthusiasts can look forward to the summer of 2007 when the small topless BMW will come to dealers – for relatively small cash. Different from its bigger brother, the future 3-series Coupé-Cabrio (CC), the open One will come with a conventional canvas top. The two different roof-systems will also distance the two cars price-wise, especially since the 3 series CC will make a jump upwards and hence will make room for this new cabrio b…

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/autoshow...*#08bmwx6crg500 What is it? 2009 BMW X6 What's special about it? Coupelike agility combined with SUV utility? That's the promise of the 2009 BMW X6. It sounds like a stretch, but if any company can pull it off, BMW can. It already made its X5 SUV handle like a sedan, so making the similarly sized (although slightly lower) X6 feel like a coupe isn't impossible. A choice of two turbocharged engines should help. Base models, which will be known as the xDrive35i, will get the same twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-6 as the 3 and 5 Series sedans. It delivers 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque, so even the entry-level X6…

BMW M Coupe to Enter Series Production Source: BMW 11/23/2005 -- Following strong consumer reaction to the concept Z4 Coupe at the 2005 Frankfurt and Tokyo Auto Shows, BMW has confirmed that both the Z4 Coupe and an M version, the M Coupe will enter series production. Visitors in Frankfurt and Tokyo were captivated by the car’s stylish body with its unique silken matte finish, tailored in the very best style of a classic sports coupe. While the driving dynamics potential of the vehicle was clear in its strong, purposeful lines, equally appealing to visitors was the striking interior design. Now spy shots have emerged of the coupe undergoing some testing. Design wise, the coupe will share a family resemblance with the sedan. Spied: 2008 BMW 6-Series Looks like the 2008 BMW 6 Series is getting some exterior updates. Well, actually it doesn't look like it's getting some updates, but when you examine these pictures very closely there are some subtle changes to this 6 Series test mule that indicate a midcycle refresh. The front air dam has a slightly different shape around the fog lights while the rear end is sporting a slightly revised fascia as well. We didn’t catch any interior shots, but we're guessing the 6 Series will get the same shifter first introduced in the X5 along with some minor trim changes. Look for the 2008 BMW 6 Series in dealers by the end of this year. Edmunds

Spied: BMW Z9 BMW is testing new prototypes for a new convertible. Whether this is the new Z4 or the more upscale Z9 is a matter of intense conjecture at this point. We originally thought Z4, but closer inspection suggests that this could be BMW’s SL-fighter–the Z9. This prototype is clearly larger than today’s Z4, but that also supports earlier reports that the next-gen Z4 would be growing up a bit to make room for an entry-level Z2 roadster. The most noteworthy details on this prototype are the side windows–a glass-to-glass pillarless design reminiscent of the BMW 8-series and the Mercedes CL. Is that enough of a clue to prove this is the Z9? Quite possibly, especial…

Our friends at KGP Photography have cracked off some excellent shots of what they believe is an early BMW X6 mule. Derived from the new X5, the new crossover will apparently weigh style over utility, with a more aggressively sloped roofline and steep windshield. The spy shooters originally thought they could be looking at another planned X5-based vehicle, the V5, but given the fact that it doesn't appear to be very efficient in terms of packaging (The V5 is said to be pitched at Mercedes-Benz's R-Class), they've decided otherwise. Spied: BMW X5 Interior -------------------- The latest X5 spy shot to be added to the growing album offers insight into the SUV's interior. The latest, most-notably clear shot reveals a design that follows BMW's recent interior design trend from it's broad swath of aluminum to the highly-placed NAV and curving center-console. Perhaps the most polarizing aspect of the interior is the gear-selector that looks to be sourced from Norelco. We'll see if that piece makes production. Image courtesy KGP

Eight speeds and a more voluptuous look? by Brenda Priddy | (2007-07-16) | Link to Original Article @ TCC A refreshed BMW 7-Series is undergoing testing, and TheCarConnection.com's spies have nabbed it a year before it goes on sale. We're expecting the new 7-Series to have a completely new front end, similar to the 6-Series styling, and sources say the current model's extravagant design will be toned down quite a bit. The sedan should have a more elegant look than ever before. The position of the headlights and turn signals indicate low-mounted, wrap-around headlights and a wide grille, as well as a sleeker body and a more dramatic overall appearance. In addition to…

SPY SHOTS! 2009 BMW X6 Link to Original Article @ Jalopnik According to the report from the wily spy shooters of KGP, they happened upon a group of BMW engineers out testing the new BMW X6 who'd run into a bit of trouble in the 128-degree heat of a "desolate California road." We'll let KGP take over from here: Despite the giveaways offered by the spy shots, it's still hard for us to determine the overall design of the X6, but the look we've now got due to these shots certainly makes it easier.

TCC Review: 2006 BMW Z4 M The second of TCC's review of BMW M cars this week is the BMW Z4 M Coupe. It's not the prettiest car in the world (it's not pretty at all, to be honest) but does the drive make up for the looks? Read the 2006 BMW Z4 M Coupe review @ The Car Connection

TCC Test: 2007 BMW X5 4.8i It's typical that as a vehicle grows in size and becomes more "mainstream" and "family friendly," it also becomes more like the typical middle-aged clientèle that needs mainstream and family-friendly vehicles. Once-sharp reflexes and a firm suspension set up for enthusiast drivers are swapped for drop-down DVD entertainment systems for the kids and power-operated toys for the grown-ups. The X5 has an abundance of the latter, including a "simplified" version of the infamous iDrive mouse controller (more on that below), available heads-up display and an electrically activated gear shifter similar to the system first used on the 7-Series sedan…

Spy Shots: ’07 BMW 1-Series Convertible Is there room for a sub-3er ragtop? by Hans Lehmann/Hidden Image (2006-02-06) BMW is set to show a new three-door version of the 1-Series at next month's Geneva Motor Show. But the hardtop won't be the only new version of BMW's smallest model to emerge in the coming year. These are the very first pictures of the future 1-Series Convertible, taken during a short test drive in Munich 's city traffic. The prototype in the photos still wears some disguise, but its canvas top is still clearly visible. While the 1-Series three-door will be in dealerships this summer across Europe, the convertible's launch is expected to be on…

The "Rev"erend: Pastor Sells Church to Buy BMW Date posted: 02-03-2006 MANTECA, California — BMW envy strikes some harder than others. Take the case of the Reverend Randall Radic, the 53-year-old former pastor of this town's First Congregational Church. According to the Associated Press, Reverend Radic pleaded guilty to embezzlement and was sentenced to 18 months in prison. His crime? Selling the town's oldest church last October for $525,000 and using a portion of the proceeds to buy a BMW. The press accounts declined to say what the pastor did with the rest of the money, or even what sort of Bimmer he was able to procure. Radic remains in the San Joaquin County Ja…

Every site and magazine seems to have a different take on what the V5 and X6 are supposed to be. The overall consensus seems to be that the V5 is some sort of crossover wagon like the Volvo XC70 and Audi allroad that would slot between the 5-series wagon and X5. The X6 has been depicted as everything from a BMW version of the MB CLS to a BMW version of the Infiniti FX. Somes sources reverse the two names and suggest the X6 is the MPV and the V5 is the crossover sport wagon. Does anyone have any insight here?

We drove the new BMW X3 to Hersheypark for the day, and found that the kids are jaded at their very young ages! I liked the new X3 so much more than the first generation, which I didn't think fully deserved the BMW label. What are your thoughts on the vehicle? So there is a post here on the 2015 F16 (see photo below) http://www.bmwcoop.com/2013/12/17/2015-f16-bmw-x6-on-the-market-starting-with-2014/#comment-18021 Great post and all so I encourage you to check it out but I have a much more pedestrian interest in it: I want to know what's up with the wrpa the car is wearing. Anyone know why they wrapped this in swirly black and white? Is it to deter photos?
